What are Makerspaces

Makerspaces are collaborative work spaces that are designed for students to engage in hands-on, creative and synergetic projects. Students focus on tasks that promote flexible thinking and teamwork as they work together to create and problem solve. As makerspaces have roots in the hackerspace culture, computing and technology also play a key role in problem solving and the subsequent creation of a tangible product. Furthermore, the maker environment is built upon dispositions that "enhance computational thinking, such as perseverance, tolerance for ambiguity, communication, and collaboration."

Traditionally, makerspaces are associated with informal learning environments. However, the potential exists for them to be interwoven with formal education providing an inclusive environment that paves a pathway for students to foster an interest in the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, maths) subjects.
