TIM LEHMAN Landscape Architecture Portfolio

Tim Lehman I am an Urban/Landscape Designer who is passionate about community development. I enjoy being in the field working with residents to help better their communities. My goals are to help create communities residents can be proud of and to strengthen my own skills while working with these communities. I am seeking a position as a designer in a field that allows for collaboration, allowing me to grow in a field that connects people with nature.

An open space site was looked at as part of a final studio assignment. This particular site borders the University District, Ravenna and Bryant neighborhoods. The site itself is an open space that is within walking distance to bus stops, grocery stores and the Burke Gilman Trail. A multifamily development shares the open space. When on site the importance of children was noticeable with the day care just north of the site and the littering of children’s toys all along the site itself. It is important to note that the multifamily community are students who have children that attend the University of Washington. I wanted to design a space that incorporated activities not just for kids, but the family as a whole. By including a community garden, rain garden and bike share space children will be able to learn about food and gardening, learn about the importance of clean water, and the importance of using non-auto oriented transportation. The water play fountain will incorporate sculpture art from UW School of Art across the street and the UW School of Horticulture also across the street can teach garden practice. Inspiration came from Charlotte Garden in Copenhagen, Denmark, Lyon Meadows in Champagne, France and Magnolia Park in Hillsboro, Oregon. I created a space that families can use to play in the water, work and/or learn in the gardens and rain garden or rest on the grassy mounds.

Prismatic Plaza: What To Do Around KEXP Programs used: Adobe Suit Arc GIS Hand Sketches

KEXP had not been relocated yet in the Northwest Buildings of Seattle Center. We were to look on how to liven up the space surrounding the KEXP relocation site. Taking cues from music festivals and dance performances I wanted to include these elements into a design that can be used every day and for special events such as Bumbershoot. I incorporated lights and elements that broke up the open space currently available. I wanted to provide a space for the programs and buildings that provided youth programs and classrooms to be creative.

Feed The Beavers: A Positive Rehabilitation Programs used:

This studio looked at some unused space surrounded by the 520 Bridge Replacement program. After kayaking around the surrounding area, it was clear that this area was a beaver habitat and that there were erosion issues. I proposed to plant both Populus trichocarpa (Poplar) and Salix sitchensis (Sitka Willow) as these are primary foods for the local beaver, as was evident by the trees that were chewed down. By providing trees for the beavers, many species habitats would be affected, the fallen wood would create breaks along the shore to help protect against erosion, also providing sheltered habitats for turtles and other aquatic life. When Poplar is threatened it send shoots up to act as a defense so that it will not die out, in doing so it will thicken the vegetation along the shoreline and help provide food for the beaver. With the beaver damn being visible I wanted to create a viewing dock that people could use to watch the beavers during sunrise and sunset as they are Crepuscular mammals.

Pike Pine Conservation District Programs used: Adobe Suit Arc GIS Sketchup

This is an example of taking a building, The Ferrari Dealership and applying its Development Rights to another building. The Ferrari Dealership was chosen for its Development Rights because it was zoned in NC3P-65 and it was only a one-story building. With a foot print just over 17,000 sf the parcel itself was 18,233 sf giving an existing FAR or .94. The maximum FAR allowed is 4.75, meaning that there is definite development potential. With the Ferrari site there is 66,151 sf to be transferred.

10

The Receiving site is on the corner of Pike and Melrose. It currently is a restaurant and two stories of office space. The two adjacent parcels where chosen because it is the same owner and has huge potential. Of the 21,200 sf available only 5,490 sf has been built upon with a three story building totaling 16,470 sf. This area is zoned as NC3P-85 making the FAR a 6. There is currently 129,751 sf not being used on the site. At least 8 floors of mixed used space could potentially be built on this site.

Rab, Croatia: Design Build

As a group we designed and built a Rehabilitation park for a Mental institute in Rab, Croatia. Three major aspects were a therapeutic walking path where patients can relearn how to walk. A covered space was used as a place to put memory games for Alzheimer’s patients. Lastly a deck structure was built with fiberglass structures, so PTSD patients could train a therapeutic dog. For this studio hand drawings were the main focus.
