Apatiet is een mineraal, of eigenlijk de naam voor een mineraalgroep, want de samenstelling van Apatiet kan verschillen. Tussen de chemische eindleden komt volledige menging voor. Fluorapatiet is verreweg het meest voorkomend, waardoor apatiet ook wel als synoniem voor Fluorapatiet gebruikt wordt. In Apatiet kan ook een hoeveelheid carbonaat voorkomen. Verder bevat het doorgaans kleine hoeveelheden van bepaalde metalen, waaronder ijzer, mangaan, magnesium en uranium. Apatiet wordt voornamelijk gevormd in pegmatieten, Pneumatolieten, onder hydrothermale omstandigheden en in alluviale afzettingen. Het mineraal is zeer algemeen en komt wereldwijd voor. Blauwachtige Fluorapatieten komen uit Virgen da Plata en olijfgroene uit Campo Linda. In de VS komen Apatieten voor in Maine (Violetkleurige tot 25 cm grote kristallen; de daaruit geslepen stenen wegen tot 170 kt). Vergelijkbare Apatieten worden gevonden in Sri Lanka, deze zijn blauw en vertonen kattenoogeffect, andere zijn groen en geel. In India worden groene stenen gevonden met kattenoogeffect.

Apatite is a mineral, or actually the name of a mineral group, because the composition of Apatite may differ. Full mixing occurs between the chemical endpoints. Fluorapatite is by far the most common, which makes apatite a synonym for Fluorapatite. A quantity of carbonate can also be found in Apatite. Similar Apatites are found in Sri Lanka, these are blue and show cat eye effect, others are green and yellow.
