Excerpt from Challenges article: …Tim McCormack. At 43, this lawyer and law professor at the University of Washington, has a comfortable situation. "Everybody will not win, but if you win, you really win, he insists, sounding his infectious laugh in the cozy bar with a Seattle hotel. The Farm - "a beautiful, almost mystical, which makes me think of the Lord of the Rings" - is an open farm 6400 square meters, named Antoine Creek Farms . It plans to build on the quality. "Right now, people want just enough smoke. In the long term, it will be something special to stand out. One of our goals is to find the variety that makes you the same effect as two glasses of wine, that is to say, that does not make you fall you in your sofa, but makes you more sociable and makes you want to break you. "
. . . [A]s Tim McCormack, owner of Antoine Creek Farms, tells me as he steps out of his snow-covered ride, the long shadow of marijuana’s illegality had them scared shitless at the beginning of their public pot experiment. “Oh, believe me, it was plenty weird for us when we had to transfer 1,600 marijuana plants in a U-Haul truck at 4 in the morning from an ‘undisclosed location,’ ” he says as the sun sets behind the mountains that butt up against his grow fields. McCormack, CEO of one of the state’s largest marijuana producers, is referring to a conundrum known as the “first seed problem” or the “magicbean scenario.” Since marijuana is still illegal at the federal level, even fully licensed growers find themselves in a catch-22. See, before you get a license, it’s illegal to grow marijuana or even possess seeds.
McCormack, CEO [of Antoine Creek Farms] one of the state’s largest marijuana producers, is referring to a conundrum known as the “first seed problem” or the “magic-bean scenario.”
That means that the first growers under the Washington law have been expected to conjure an immaculate conception, producing plants from thin air. Once those growers are given licenses, state officials just look the other way while the farmer magically comes up with starter plants; don’t ask, don’t tell. But don’t tell that to the county sheriff. “I had a long discussion with my partner, Brian [Slegel, CFO] about who would drive the truck with our plants, and what we’d say if we got pulled over,” McCormack recalls. The reason Tim didn’t drive? “Well, I told Brian that the whole management team shouldn’t get busted in the U-Haul. And I’m also a lawyer, so I could bail him out.” [As allowed by law,] fifteen days after McCormack and Slegel’s June run, an inspector from the state came by to make sure the non-flowering plants they’d miraculously created were the right size. Then each was bar-coded and entered into the state’s BioTrack software system, officially becoming part of the state’s newest industry.

HYBRID STRAINS RG KUSH This hybrid eco-warrior we’ve christened RG KUSH represents everything we hoped to accomplish in our inaugural year. We trusted that growing a greener green would yield high potencies and abundant crops, but when RG KUSH finished the harvest, we were astonished to find liquid sunshine downloaded into this gem’s resinous sheen of trichomes. One or two good draws of tasty pineapple-lemon smoke, and we were right back in the long, dreamy days of Chelan County at the top of summer, with the plant’s famous Kush genetics settling across the body like a blanket of warm golden haze. A few hours later and the buzzy head euphoric smoothed away like the afternoon slipping into dusk. We also didn’t expect this hybrid to take our “greener green” aspirations literally. The hyper-green pigment of the RG KUSH bud is actually kind of startling. For a brief period our farm’s, uh, quality control group thought that since our UFO brand was about exploring the universe, maybe we should use names of famous spacecraft to help describe our catalog of strains. So, yes, Millennium Falcon would to be a sativa because it can make a jump to hyperspace, and the Enterprise, maybe a hybrid, since it boldly goes, but then the TARDIS is really more a time travel machine than a spaceship, and Starship Yamato sounds like you’re smoking a tomato, and would a Kush be better personified by an A-wing, B-wing, X-wing, Y-wing, and what’s the name of that weird organic ship in Farscape anyway? We gave up on the Famous Spaceship idea. Except this one. SERENITY. SERENITY, our hybrid strain with the beautiful purple sugar leaves is a sweet blend of sativa and indica traits. And while “sweet” is a relative term in the world of marijuana, we’re using the adjective literally as well as figuratively. This plant has a well-known fruity inhale that tastes like wild forest berries. It’s probably a testament to the epic strength of this indica that we’re so very hazy on why we decided to call it FRACTAL WACK. Mostly it’s just embarrassing. We’re the ones that rode these frosty buds out of orbit for a quick trip around the neighborhood, and now we’re thinking we may have stayed out late, drove FRACTAL all the way to the next galaxy, and the only clue we have to connect the name dots is an Appleby’s receipt with the words “big picture” scribbled on the back. Maybe if we explain what this strain is like, we can be excused for being taken a bit off guard. First, if you’re lucky enough to see this plant before harvest, trust us, you’ll be forever impressed by the frost of sugary-white crystals this particular cannabis princess wraps around her shoulders. FRACTAL WACK flowered as a bushy, waist-high plant that barely looked green anymore. Someone was cultivating the best of all cannabis worlds--an indica boosted with highoctane sativa. The distinctive “haze” strain always means crazy THC levels.
