The dissertation recorded in this volume is a reproduction of the masters of architecture thesis completed in the first year of the course. While it formally has no relationship to the final year design thesis project within the structure of the masters, it inevitably bears many of the founding ideas developed during the design project. The writing of this dissertation fostered a passion for theory, and an interest in testing theoretical ideas within the spatial and tectonic possibilities of architecture. It provided a glimpse of the possibilities that critical theory may serve in emancipating architectural ideas through the engagement of theories from disciplines traditionally outside of architecture.
Although this may be self evident in architectural theory and practice today, witnessing the power of this in the historical avant-garde gave emphasis to progressive power of shared ideas.
