HINTS AND TIPS By following these simple steps when packing your items in preparation for storage, you can be assured that when it’s time to retrieve your goods they’ll be free of damage, and ready for storing.
GENERAL TIPS: • Pack items properly before you get to the storage centre. • Choose the best size unit for your needs. • Ensure that heavy items aren’t leaning against the walls of your unit as this can cause damage. • Utilise all of the space available to you, including the height. • Make sure the boxes aren’t over-filled so that they become too awkward or heavy to lift. • Stack the lighter boxes on top of the heavier boxes.
• Don’t over-pack a carton or it will be too hard to lift or rearrange in the unit when adding additional items and removing needed ones. • Pack cartons so they are evenly balanced and won’t tip over and cause damage. • Box unusually shaped items. • Collapse anything that would otherwise take up too much space if left intact, such as beds and tables. • Plan your storage space and prepare the items accordingly. • Store heavy or large items at the back or at the bottom.
Tip #1
Number your labels and mark what’s inside or where each box comes from for quick checking and organising when you take your possessions back to the office or store. Make a note of how many boxes you have.
• Label each box clearly on the side. • Pack items you may need, such as important papers, in accessible containers at the front of the unit for easy access. • Allow for walking space if you will be accessing things regularly. • Keep fabric off the bare floor (e.g. mattresses, upholstery). • Clearly label fragile items and store them away from heavier items. • Arrange adequate insurance cover before you store.
Tip #2 Make a list or take photos. Grouping your belongings into logical batches of labelled boxes obviously makes it easier to find things later. BUT putting the odd item in to fill a gap will probably happen and recording where “it” is will be a big help later..
