A new decade ahead Every fortnight the government paymaster drove out with his team of four mules and his boxes of money. Behind him, mounted on a mule or a camel, came the Travelling Agency of the Commonwealth Savings Bank, open for business. During the following three years this officer covered over 60,000 miles by horse, camel and mule team. Often he had to use the top of a water tank or a railway trolley for a table. Almost every worker opened a savings bank account. Many men who had never previously had more than a few pounds had saved enough to buy homes when the railway was finished. In all, 4258 accounts were opened and ÂŁ311,164 deposited. At the same time, the railway found it necessary to provide a mail service. By 1918, the workmen were asking for money order facilities so that they could send money home. The Camp Pay Train TPO Great Western Railway was set up, taking the place
