PROF. DEVELOPMENT WEEK Summary SESSION #1: RECRUITER’S INSIGHTS BY VOXEUREKA The idea of working in an agency has always been exciting for me. The presentation by Voxeureka was interesting because it was looking at job applications from the employers POV. Especially since the employer is from a PR and Social Media background. This just proves that whatever you put out on social media plays a major role in your future employer’s impression of you before they even meet you in person.
SESSION #2: SECTOR FOCUSED ENGAGEMENT by WILDSNAPPER TV The entertainment industry has always been an interest of mine. This session gave a really good summary behind the production and film industry. The biggest takeaway from this is how they mentioned that they hire anyone from any field of study, as they can utilise specific skill sets on set. I have dwelled a little into directing and videography of skits and music videos and to learn about the come up of Mrs. Zabrina was truly inspiring.
SESSION #3: SECTOR FOCUSED ENGAGEMENT by R&D STUDIO This session is the main one for my field of study in design. It was like reliving my internship over again as many of the things mentioned were similar to that experience, like what employers look at before hiring a designer and the working culture etc. It was also quite disappointing to hear that the expected first salary was lower than what I imagined. I understand that it's a starting point, however I honestly feel the industry undercompensates the efforts and hours that designers put into their work.
SESSION #4: FINANCIAL LITERACY FOR FRESH GRADUATES (3) THIS SESSION WAS PRESENTED BY STASHAWAY. HONESTLY BEFORE THE SESSION, INVESTING MY MONEY WAS AN UNKNOWN AND MYSTERIOUS ENTITY THAT I HAD NO IDEA WHERE TO EVEN BEGIN. I HAVE FRIENDS THAT ALREADY UTILISE STASHAWAY BEFORE THE PDW AND I WAS EXPECTING TO LEARN WHAT THE APP WAS ABOUT. HOWEVER, THE SHARING WAS ABOUT GENERAL INVESTMENTS AND WHAT MAKES A GOOD INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY. FOR SOMEONE WHO’S COMPLETELY OBLIVIOUS TO THESE KINDS OF THINGS, IT WAS VERY INFORMATIVE AND I’M DEFINITELY INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE INDUSTRY AND TRYING IT OUT FOR MYSELF. SESSION #5: CREATIVE JOB HUNT: LINKEDIN AND SOCIAL MEDIA by MONDELEZ Throughout the course of my studies, I have never seen the importance of utilising Linkedin. It always felt like a form of social media that nobody sees and just a chore to set up and maintain. This session gave an insight into how hiring companies stream through potential candidates just based on the profile of an applicant. SESSION #6: NAVIGATING THE GIG ECONOMY BY QWORK THE GIG ECONOMY IS SOMETHING I’M PARTICULARLY INTERESTED IN AS I BELIEVE IT'S A POSSIBLE CAREER OPTION AFTER GRADUATING FOR ME. AS I’M DIPPING MY TOES IN THE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE, LEARNING HOW TO HANDLE THIS SECTOR WELL IS CRUCIAL FOR MY FUTURE. HOWEVER, FOR THE MOST PART OF THE SESSION IT FELT LIKE A FEATURE OF THE APP QWORK. THEY INTRODUCED HOW YOU COULD GET JOBS BASED ON YOUR SKILLSET FROM THE APP AND I DOWNLOADED THE APP IMMEDIATELY. IT WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTING TO SEE THAT THE APP WAS NOT AS WELCOMING AS PRESENTED BECAUSE MOST OF THE JOBS AVAILABLE WERE LIKE DELIVERY OR PACKING SERVICES. HOWEVER, KNOWING THAT THERE ARE SERVICES LIKE QWORK IS TRYING TO ENCOURAGE THE GIG ECONOMY IS ASSURING TO ME AND MY FUTURE.
