By Timothy Roberts The official opening ceremony for the Tenth Annual Christmas Bazaar was held at 4pm under the theme ‘A Junkanoo Christmas’ with addresses coming from both the Members of Parliament for North and for Central and South Abaco.

Edison Key, Member of Parliament for Central and South Abaco, gave greetings to the crowd. He thanked everyone for showing their support for the bazaar and emphasized the roll that Wynsome Ferguson, Brenda Sawyer and Jo-Ann Bradley played in making the event happen year after year.

He said this year a lot of people have experienced problems, the economy hasn’t been well and noted that there wasn’t as many people attending as there have been in past years.

celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, but it’s also a time that we can be unified and exhibit the spirit of love and togetherness.”

He said as long as we are unified with a spirit of love we know that not only Abaco, but The Bahamas will continue to excel.

He commended the “hardworking committee members” for all that they have done to ensure the event is a success. He gave apologies for the Minister of Tourism, Obie Wilchcombe who was unable to attend the event.

Mr. Curry, after wishing all the best of the holiday season to those gathered, declared the event officially opened.

Wynsome Ferguson, Director of Tourism Office in Abaco, said she is proud to have been a part of this Bazaar since its inception ten years ago, which is now the most highly anticipated event every year.

She said locals and visitors alike look forward to the fine food and locally produced crafts as well as the bevvy of entertainment served up every year.

During the opening ceremony a special presentation was made to Gary Sawyer who was referred to as the ‘Santa’ of

the Christmas Bazaar over the years for his financial assistance in helping make it happen. Jo-Ann Bradley said that this year they were finally able to have paid off their ‘Santa’ and wanted to show appreciation for his help.

Also honored for their hard work on the Christmas Bazaar and other events were Wynsome Ferguson and Melinda Pinder.

Marilyn Sawyer, a Marsh Harbour native, was chosen to turn the lights on for the Christmas tree lighting as the crowd applauded the beautifully decorated tree.

added a bird to the top of their wreath with a message of “Merry Christmas” hanging from the bottom. Second place went to Alanna Bass, who added a splash of hot pink to her design. Finally, Laverne Maynard, placed third for her carefully arranged selection of burnt orange, green and silver ornaments.

Stunned by the win, all Emily could say was: "My heart almost stopped."

Soon after Santa Claus came to town in his freshly painted red sleigh – just in time to distribute candies to a throng of excited children. He took time to hug them, and listen to their Christmas wish lists.

By Canishka Alexander The 10th Annual Abaco Christmas Festival was well-received by the Abaco community and off-island visitors on Dec. 7 at BAIC Park. Pastor Stephen Knowles, president of the Abaco Christian Council, was invited to open the event in prayer.

Leading off the fun-filled events was the Christmas Wreath Competition, which allowed participants to come up with the best decorated wreath in 10 minutes.

They five competitors were allowed to compete individually or as a team. In the end, the first-place trophy was awarded to Kaylee Roberts and Emily Kemp, who

The Scurvy Few were also in attendance representing Toys for Tots, an organization that purchases toys every Christmas for underprivileged children.

Many other booths and vendors were on site to entertain families.

Road paving resumes

Above: after a month of delays due to material shortages, paving has resumed in Central Abaco. However, due to pending approvals and paperwork there will be a delay to paving a certain section of Don MacKay Blvd where wells must be dug.

By Timothy Roberts After about one month of inactivity due to a lack of material, Bill Simmons Construction & Heavy Equipment Company Ltd. resumed road paving on December 4 with a view to complete to the island’s signature stoplight before the holidays.

General Manager of Simmons Construction, Kino Simmons said the major delay in paving occurred as they waited on a shipment of aggregate from Freeport which was delayed due a spot of bad weather in November. “Once this arrives we should be able to complete the entire of Don McKay before the holidays,” he said.

However, due to waiting on Cabinet approvals and paperwork there will be a delay to paving a section of Don MacKay Blvd. from the area near Abaco Motor Mall to the area next to Bahamas Telecom-

munications Company (BTC).

According to Mr. Simmons they are sub-contracting a company to drill drainage wells on the western side of the road in three spots in that stretch of Don MacKay Blvd. He said the proposal for the wells and the continued paving of Queen Elizabeth Dr. through to the Crossing recently was approved in Cabinet and the paperwork needed to proceed is likely to reach Simmons Construction in early January.

There will be no paving until the drainage wells, expected to be about 150 feet deep, are completed.

Mr. Simmons noted also that the new paving does not go all the way to the present verges. He explained that they were contracted to pave a twenty-four foot road and in some places along Don MacKay Blvd. the road is noticeably wider.

BTC technical issues interrupt service Press Release The Bahamas Telecommunication Company (BTC) advised that a technical issue inadvertently impacted BTC services to many of the Bahama Islands at 1:15 p.m., Tuesday December 10.

Subsequently New Providence, Paradise Island, Eleuthera, Grand Bahama, Bimini, Abaco, Long Island, San Salvador, Inagua, Rum Cay and Cat Island experienced loss of Internet, data and Wireless service between 1:35 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.

Some connectivity was restored by 2:01 p.m. and remaining services slowly restored throughout the afternoon. Customers experienced congestion on cell to toll calls until 5:00 p.m. when normal service was resumed.

BTC apologized for the inconvenience caused and assured that everything possible was done to quickly restore service to all impacted areas.

Cable Bahamas compensates customers for outages Press Release Cable subscribers in Grand Bahama, Abaco and Eleuthera were affected last week with an interruption of a small portion of their TV services. Cable Bahamas advised that the issues were caused by equipment and service upgrades.

The upgrades began Wednesday, November 27, when a number of channels and the video on demand service were impacted with intermittent signals. The completion of the 48-hour upgrade process resulted in the resolution of the intermittent signals experienced by some of Cable Bahamas' subscribers.

"Every single one of our subscribers are important to us," said Cable Bahamas Head of Marketing David Burrows. "We know that people love their cable TV services and anything that gets in the way of that enjoyment is a serious matter for us."

Mr. Burrows explained that the company will be providing free access to premium cable TV services for subscribers on the islands of Grand Bahama, Abaco & Eleuthera, as compensation for the inconveniences experienced during the upgrade of its television network.

"While we responded immediately to get the issue resolved as quickly as possible," Mr. Burrows said, "we wanted to provide our customers with something of real value to balance out some of that frustration."

Cable Bahamas provided all cable subscribers on Grand Bahama, Abaco and Eleuthera with free access to all premium cable TV packages for the weekend from 8:00 a.m. Friday, December 6th through 8:00 a.m. Monday, December 9th. This included all premium TV services, inclusive of movie packages, digital music channels, as well as the company's top premium sports packages.

Mr. Burrows noted that the free weekend provided access to major programming options. "This week, you'll be able to all the NFL games like Seahawks vs San Francisco, top NBA matchups like San Antonio Spurs versus the Indiana Pacers, and great movies Pacific Rim, Epic, We're the Millers and Man of Steel, as well as enjoy many other movie options," Mr. Burrows explained.

Mr. Burrows noted that this included free access to almost 400 channels. "This is to show our appreciation for our customers' patience for the trouble they may have experienced. We hope this provides some extra pleasure and enjoyment over the weekend," Mr. Burrows said.

Crime Report Disorderly Behaviour and Resisting Arrest (Suspect Arrested) At 10:10pm on 27th November, 2013, a 32 year old resident of Marsh Harbour, Abaco, reported that a young man was presently at her place of work, a local bar and restaurant, and refused to pay his bar bill. Police assistance requested.

Officers of the M.H.P.S. responded and arrested a 26 year old male of Dundas Town, Abaco, who refused to pay his bill and conducted himself in a Disorderly Manner. He was charged for the offences.

He is scheduled to appear before the Magistrate’s Court on Monday 2nd, December 2013 at 10:00 a.m.

Housebreaking, Stealing and Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Suspect Arrested) At 8:20pm on 26th November, 2013, a 25 year old resident of Murphy Town, Abaco, reported that sometime around 7:15pm on same date, a man known to her and two other males unknown came to her mother’s apartment complex located Murphy Town, Abaco, where they entered the premise without permission and stole a 45” flat screen T.V. One of the suspects while leaving pointed a knife at her 11 year old son putting him in fear. Police action requested.

Suspect Arrested At 10:10am on 28th July, 2013, officers of the Central Detective Unit Abaco arrested the suspect a 51 year old male of Murphy Town, Abaco reference to the offences. The accused was interviewed and charged. He will be arraigned on the 2.12.13.

Threats of Death (Suspect Arrested) At 3:00pm on 29th November, 2013, a 71 year old resident of Mount Hope Abaco, reported that sometime around 10:00pm on 28th November, 2013 while at her residence, her son age 39 years of age of Fox Town, Abaco, Threatened to kill her and burn her house down. Police action requested.

Suspect Arrested At 5:00pm on 29th November, 2013, officers of the North Abaco Division arrested the suspect while in Fox Town, Abaco. He was charged for the offence.

Armed Robbery On Sunday 1st December, 2013 at about 7:14pm a 63 year old male resident of Treasure Cay, Abaco reported for his employee a 24 year old female resident of Blackwood, Abaco that person (s) unknown had just robbed a local web shop located in Cooper's Town of an undetermined amount of cash. Police action requested.

Officers of the Central Detective Unit Abaco and officers of the Coopers Town Police Station responded.

Investigation continues into this matter.

Firearm Arrest At 4:10am on 7th December, 2013, Officers of the M.H.P.S. while on patrol reported arresting one Frank Curtis, age 35 year of Christie Street, Dundas Town, Abaco reference to Possession of Unlicensed Firearm. Acting on information received, officers went in the area of Surfside Club where he was found in Possession of a black pistol.

Officers of the Central Detective Unit charged the suspect in reference to Possession of Unlicensed Firearm. The suspect was transported to New Providence on 8th December, 2013, to be arraigned in the firearm court.

Threats of Death, Disorderly Behaviour and Obsene Languages At 4:15am on 7th December, 2013, officers of the M.H.P.S. reported that while booking in one Frank Curtis, age 35 year old of Christie Street, Dundas Town, Abaco, reference to Possession of Unlicensed Firearm, the culprit used obscene languages to the annoyance of officers and acted in a disorderly manner. Further, the culprit Frank Curtis threatened to kill the officers putting him in fear of their lives.

He was also charged reference to these matters.

Assault of a Police Officer and Escape (Suspect Arrested) At 9:35am on 7th December, 2013, officers of the M.H.P.S. reported that sometime around 9:35am on same date while on duty at M.H.P.S., an officer while putting one Frank Curtis, age 35 years old of Christie Street, Dundas Town, Abaco, in the holding cell at M.H.P.S. the culprit violently pushed the officer to the ground and made good his escape. The culprit was in custody at the time in reference to Possession of Unlicensed Firearm and other matters. He was caught a short time later.

Suspect Arrested Officers of the M.H.P.S. sometime around 11:30am same date, arrested the suspect in the bush near the Government Complex in Marsh Harbour. The suspect was brought to M.H.P.S. where he was charged for the offences.

Causing Grievous Harm (Suspect Arrested) At 1:05am on 8th December, 2013, Security personnel c/o Marsh Harbour Government Clinic contacted the M.H.P.S. and reported that a young man was brought to Marsh Harbour Government Clinic suffering from injuries about his body. Police assistance requested.

Officers of the M.H.P.S. saw and spoke to the victim, a 20 year old male of Murphy Town, Abaco who was suffering from injuries to the upper body and leg.

The victim reported while in the area of DNR Sport Bar located Marsh Harbour; he was attacked by several males.

Suspect arrested.

Sometime around 3:50am on 8th December, officers of the M.H.P.S. acting on information, while in the area of Surfside, Dundas Town, Abaco arrested three sus-

// Pine Tree Christmas

Christmas time always seems to bring back a host of memories.

I have one in particular I want to share.

Trekking through the bush with my father and mother. Our mission: to chop down a small Abaco pine to use as our family Christmas tree. I was incredibly young when this happened. In fact I’m not even sure if it is a real memory I’m holding on to at all. I could very well be constructing it around a family photo. In either case, this family adventure did happen; who cares about the perspective?

I remember this scene every year around Christmas. Insignificant in the course of things, but something I hold on to. Especially now that my own tree is in the living room: decorated and smelling like everything that is right with the world.

It sticks with me because if I can nail down one thing that, to me, embodies what Abaco is it is this.

It’s a family, and a small adventure.

Abaconians used to be adventurous. Perhaps we still are. But I am sorely worried about what will happen when the generation that

brought us this far is no longer with us. The boat builders, the entrepreneurs and those who took up the burden of governance, politics and caring for each other made these islands what they are. Those who volunteer and those who get things done are a dying breed.

I do not see the younger generation being brought up. Scarier, I don’t see a lot of initiative on their part. Sure, they’ve been to college or found a good career. But there is a hard line, it seems to me, between the contented generation and the generation of shapers.

I’ll focus on one thing in particular: the Marsh Harbour Boat Parade. It used to be an annual Christmas tradition. Well-loved. Fun. And a whole lot of work to organize and execute. I won’t go into any of the reasons I think it stopped, but the point is this: no one stepped up to restart it. We obviously can’t expect those who originally began it to pick up the pieces. So it becomes blatantly obvious that there was no one waiting in the wings. It seems that all the hard work that keeps Abaco a special place is too much for our younger Abaconians.

Where are our peers who should be chomping and the bit to start the next big Abaco initiative?

If we had to start from scratch, right now, would the upcoming generations find the willpower and drive to volunteer and maintain organizations like the Cancer Society, local government, the annual Christmas Bazaar or the boat parade?

Would we be chopping down our own Christmas trees or waiting for Santa to bring them?

I end with this. Encourage each other during this season. Enjoy the festivities and think how you can make Abaco a better place come New Year. We can start small. We can make a big difference.

Letters to the Editor A Big Thanks To Ural Delancy Dear Editor; We were on the last flight into Marsh Harbor on Tuesday Evening.

With greeting friends gathered around the incoming gate and picking up our suitcase from the luggage cart, my brief case got left on one of the chairs near the gate. I did not discover it until I got back home to Treasure Cay so I immediately returned to the terminal but no briefcase and no response from inside the terminal' The case had a lot of medications and items valuable to our winter stay in the Bahamas and it was going to be difficult to replace. When I got back the second time to Treasure, I went on line and there was an e mail from my Grandson at Boston College. He had gotten a call from someone telling him he had found the case and to pick it up at the airport the following day.

That someone turned out to be Ural Delancy, a security employee at the airport, who had secured the case and turned it over to me the next day.

This was duty above and beyond the normal standards. Most importantly, it is this kind of gesture that keep us Second Homeowners coming back year after year.

Thanks Ural, and love the Bahamas!

More BEC Extortion

We Need Accountability

Dear Editor; I am venting regarding yet another form of BEC's extortion. I lived in Abaco for six years and was required to give them a $650.00 security deposit. For six years the bill was paid on time and averaged $130.00 to $150.00 as we did not use dryer or air conditioning.

Well, we sold our home and stopped service as of November 4.

Now back in the U.S. trying to get our deposit rebate has proved to only net us repeated long distance phone calls and no returned calls. Everyone passes the blame to the next.

My call this morning was to Mr. Peter Rutherford AGM-Customer Services in Nassau. Let’s see if I receive a call back from him. My dear Bahamas, rather than abusing and insulting your foreign residents you should treasure the fact that they come to your country!

Dear Editor; In the midst of the heated National debate on VAT, our Minister of State for Finance, Michael Halketis is on an international roadshow with the hopes of floating an additional US$300,000,000.00 sovereign debt bond. The purpose of these funds is mostly to cover recurrent expenditure.

In a typical Bahamian household when the decision is made to borrow, it is done with great deliberation and conviction that the funds will be used for an investment that will bring increased opportunity and prosperity to the home. Extending this analogy then, it would be quite unreasonable for a family to undertake borrowing on an annual basis in order to keep up with ordinary expenses such as rent, utilities, or salaries for domestic helpers and it would clearly signal that this family has moved far beyond living within its means. Why then, would our government believe that this same basic, economic principle would not also apply in matters of national finance?

As The People of the Bahamas clamor for increased transparency, increased accountability and more efficient collection of existing revenue; our government, on one hand seems intent to carry on a "business as usual

approach" to unsustainable expenditure while on the other hand convince the public that the increased revenue from VAT is the only option to avoid economic disaster.

In the end, without an authentic effort towards developing a comprehensive economic reform plan, VAT will do little more than buy our country a few additional years of borrowing capacity and then ultimately "kick the can" of the credit rating downgrade a bit further down the road like it has done for Barbados.

Several of the graduates performed a skit related to the improvement of customer service in the public transportation sector. After highlighting the bad service that some visitors encounter, the skit was followed by another on good service to ensure service recovery.

Ian Ferguson, Tourism’s director of Training & Education, gave an overview of the BahamaHost programme, and noted several enhancements. One significant change is offering the BahamaHost programme online.

Dundas Town Local Government Update

By Samantha Evans The Local Government Committee of Dundas Town has always been very active when it comes to community building. They have numerous projects that they have embarked upon and a few others earmarked to begin early in 2014.

According to Chairman Faron Newbold, they will resume the work on the Cultural Center in January which will include them reinforcing the seawall which was damaged. They will have a Christmas Party at Brown’s Bay at which time they will feed the kids and distribute toys and other goodies. They will also be preparing and distributing care packets to the senior citizens in Dundas Town and Central Pines Estate.

They have begun street patching to cover the holes in these two communities as well and will continue until they have all been covered. They have partnered with two companies to provide playgrounds for Brown’s Bay and Central Pines. BTC will provide the one for Brown’s Bay during the month of December and a Canadian company will provide the one for Central Pines in January.

According to Mr. Newbold, they will have another year of BGCSE classes in Math and English for the community since the results from the June 2013 sitting was so good. Sixty percent of the students who took the classes passed the exam which was very impressive. He stated that registration will begin on January 6 and classes with begin on Tuesday January 21 with Math. English will remain on Wednesday evening at 6pm.

The classes will be available to current high school students and recent graduates who took the exam and didn’t do well but want to take it again. Forms will be available at high schools in the community or from any Dundas Town Local Government Committee member.

The chairman would like to send a message to owners of dilapidated building who are neglectful to please help them breakdown those building as they are an eyesore in the community, they attract deviant behavior and they are a breeding ground for rodents.

He noted that they have sent out letters to these persons but none of them have responded as yet. He wants them to know that Local Government will partner with Urban Renewal to teardown these buildings if they do not do so. He further ap-

peals to residents and contractors in Central Pines and Dundas Town to please keep their surroundings clean as he has noticed much garbage being left around some construction sites especially which makes the communities look very untidy.

He appeals to them to have proper receptacles in place to discard of their trash and debris. Finally, he would like to wish the residents of Central Pines Estate and Dundas Town a very Merry Christmas and a happy and blessed New Year 2014. He knows that some of them had a hard year 2013 but he is convinced that with God’s help, next year will be better.

Marsh Harbour Town Committee Update

By Timothy Roberts During a short meeting of the Marsh Harbour Town Committee on November 21 the members discussed items concerning cleaning up around the township.

In a previous meeting the Committee decided that the gazebo at the Union Jack Dock was proving more of a nuisance than a benefit and it was decided to remove it and make use of it elsewhere. However, it was brought to their attention that the committee needs to send a letter to police advising on who they authorized to remove it.

The Committee also discussed removing derelict vehicles from various locations in the township and hope that this works will begin as early at the first week of December.

North Abaco MP Partners with GTC Ferry to build cabana

By Timothy Roberts North Abaco Minister of Parliament and Parliamentary Secretary, Renardo Curry, is working together with the Green Turtle Cay Ferry service to provide visitors relief from the elements as they partner together to build a cabana at the Treasure Cay Ferry Dock.

“We were approached by Floyd Lowe of the Green Turtle Cay Ferry service who had a concern about the tourists who come across to the cay having to wait in the sun or in the rain; they have no place to sit and wait,” Mr. Curry said.” He suggested building a nice cabana for the tourists who travel back and forth.”

“So we decided to partner with them in providing them with all the materials for the project and they will provide the labor,” he said.

Mr. Curry said this is a good example

of a government and private sector partnership getting things done in the community and that “We are glad to be able to partnership with the ferry and Mr. Lowe in particular who is heading it.”

“I appreciate so much what they have done in doing this because it shows that they are corporate citizens and they have concern for the community,” Mr. Curry said. “As we know finances in the country are tight so it is good when a stakeholder and the government can come together to help their own community.”

Mr. Curry said he is thankful for their support and partnership in putting in a facility accommodate the visitors to Green Turtle Cay. Work has already started and he expects that the cabana should be completed in about a month.

“Despite recent challenges Winding Bay is doing well and are expecting a very good 2014 with bookings up from previous years,” Mr. Curry said. “After laying off some employees a number were re-hired and we are seeing some stability returning there.”

He noted that Schooner Bay, who has engaged a new marketing team, is expected to reach another level in their development and they are anticipating great things to come. He added that Baker’s Bay is holding their own and continues to do well.

He said that in the past year “we were able to put a number of persons to work, whether it was in the government sector or the private sector, so we are grateful to God for all that he has done for Abaco.”

He said he is also grateful to the people for keeping their heads up and “putting their shoulders to the wheel making Abaco the special island that it is.”

“So the economic outlook is bright and as long as it continues there are opportunities for entrepreneurs and for our young people to be able to find a career or develop skills,” he said.

young and old to be trained in particular disciplines. The National Training Agency (NTA), which has been delayed from opening last month in Abaco, is scheduled to open early next year, bringing hands on education for locals.

“We will have systems in place where people can go straight to work when they finish their training; the same businesses assisting in their training may be the ones to keep them on to work,” Mr. Curry said.

They are hoping to be able to host a number of training opportunities from the resort sector, to construction, to banking or whatever may be needed, to fulfill the needs of diversified business opportunities in Abaco.

He said the Sporting Complex is still a goal which is expected to kick-off with ground-breaking coming in early 2014.

He said that Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Danny Johnson has confirmed that the drawings for the facility have been completed.

“We are hopeful to get the roads completed though funding has been a factor. Recently some of the road works were stopped as the contractor had difficulty getting materials in due to the weather,” he said. He was assured, however, by the contractor that they would complete at least up to the stoplight before Christmas.

“It is my personal desire and drive to see the campus for the BTVI (Bahamas Technical Vocational Institute) be opened in Abaco,” Mr. Curry said. Joining with the local government of Murphy Town he says they have a location already in place for the facility and are looking to build a 5000 square foot building that will house the local government administration with space to facilitate BTVI. “This will be another way we can help more people qualify for jobs they might not otherwise have an opportunity to get,” he said. “That’s one of the problems we have is that there are persons looking for work but they are not qualified, so the government is going to work with those who take part to make sure they are qualified.”

He commended all the local government representatives and the island administrators for all their hard work in their districts, and those that have gone “above and beyond” to get things done. “I am here to assist them in any way possible – I have an open door policy and any of them can come and see me any time they need to.”

He also commended all the heads of departments and their staff for their cooperation and working along with him and the Office of the Prime Minister. “We thank them for their commitment and hard work in offering professional service to the

Bahamian public.”

“I wish a Merry Christmas to all and a happy and prosperous New Year” Mr. Curry said.

BahamasAir resumes flights to Treasure Cay BahamasAir, after receiving heavy criticism from business owners and residents of North Abaco, has resumed flight services to the Treasure Cay Airport.

The Bahamian airline halted flights unannounced earlier in September.

BahamasAir has chosen to outsource service to the area with another local carrier, Pineapple Air. Pineapple Air will fly a 19-seater plane into the area as opposed to the 50 seat Dash 8 that BahamasAir was operating. The decision to reopen the route using the smaller aircraft was a choice of “economics, but also long-term planning,” according to Henry Woods, general manager for BahamasAir. Currently BahamasAir (via Pineapple Air) flights to Treasure Cay are on Mondays and Thursdays. However, business owners have urged the airline to do their due diligence in whether or not those days had the highest demand.

He said the Abaco market is very important to BTC and they didn’t do a very good job in the past of servicing this market.

“We want to improve our business, grow our resources, be able to work with you and make us all more successful,” he said.

He spoke of some changes to the company image, an updated logo and redesigned website, as well as the expectation that in early 2014 LTE – the next generation of mobile data offering higher speeds – will be available in Abaco. Presently LTE has been rolled out in Nassau and Grand Bahama.

Hope Town’s Ebb Tide gift shop reopens

By Jennifer Hudson Ebb Tide Gift Shop, which has been a welcome stop for visitors to Hope Town for the past forty years, had to permanently close its doors at the beginning of the summer much to the disappointment of Debbie Patterson who had run the shop all of those years. This quaint old house which stands between the St James Methodist Church and the new Hummingbird Art Gallery is a landmark of old colonial charm.

"This house has been in the family for a long time and was owned by my great grandfather, Reggie Malone," stated Mrs. Patterson. “My grandfather, Jack Patterson, decided to open it as a gift shop 40 years ago. The building is now owned by my father and four siblings who all decided that the time had come to sell, so the store had to move out."

Fortunately, the Wyannie Malone Heritage Museum, just across the road from the Ebb Tide house, offered Mrs. Patterson the front of the building for use as her store. The museum entrance has now been moved to the side and so the Ebb Tide gift shop sits in what was once the entrance to the museum and so is very accessible to visitors wishing to purchase local souvenirs.

"We opened at 10 am on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, and we are truly a Bahamian gift shop," stated Mrs. Patterson who was helped in the move by her son, Eric. "All our inventory is made in The Bahamas by Bahamians and expats and includes handcrafts, jewellery, artwork (originals and prints), carvings, jams, sauces, candles and books and maps about the Bahamas.”

Debbie herself makes friendship bracelets and her daughter Olivia makes sea glass and shell jewellery. Some of the other artisans are Bill Johnson from Lubbers-- prints and maps; Kim Rody-paintings; Lillian Cash--' It's In the bag' Straw bags; Marc Andre-- carved wooden fish and animal jewellery boxes; Amanda Lark ---mosaic mirrors, and Roddy Pinder’s beautifully turned and polished native wood bowls. Cleaned conch shells, Bahamian calendars and notecards are also among the items sold.

Eric Patterson, who has just graduated from college with a Degree in Ma-

rine Biology, was filling in for his mother to give her a short break before becoming busy with his business Abaco Eco-Kayak Rentals and Tours. Once the Hope Town Sailing Club season opens from December 26 to mid-March, Eric admits that he will no longer have time to help his mother in the shop. He sails on the “Abaco Rage” which keeps him very busy. He sails her in the National Family Island Regatta in Georgetown, Exuma, the Long Island Regatta and Regatta Time in Abaco. He enjoys giving others the once-in-a-lifetime chance to sail on the “Rage” during Regatta Time in Abaco.

Careers on Abaco: Dentistry with Dr. Denise Archer-Sands

By Jennifer Hudson Dr. Denise Archer-Sands is an Abaconian who decided to set up her own dental practice in Marsh Harbour to serve the people of the island where she was born.

"When I left The Bahamas to study dentistry, there were at that time no Bahamian dentists on Abaco," she states.

She is a compassionate person and cites this as being a very important personality trait for a dentist along with the ability to deal with many different personalities.

"This is a stressful occupation because we have to deal with people in pain and people often tell us that they don't want to be here and they don't like us but I understand that and I tell them that the needle is their friend, I do this job because I love it,” she says. “One must also be able to deal with staff and have a good business sense."

Dr. Archer- Sands received her early education at St Francis de Sales School, Marsh Harbour, and then at the Grand Bahama Catholic High School before going on to tertiary education at Louisiana College where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology. She then entered Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans, graduating in 1995.

After working in Freeport for a while, staying with her sister, Dr. ArcherSands returned to Abaco where she worked for a year with Dr. Therese Bonamy at the Agape Dental Centre and then for another year with Dr. Vincent McWeeney at the Greater Abaco Dental Clinic. In 1993 she opened her own dental practice, Diamante Dental, located above the Auskell Clinic in Marsh Harbour.

Since she is a devout Christian, Dr. Archer- Sands knew that she wanted a career which would not only provide a living but which she also saw as a Ministry.

"I felt that God could use me in this career," she says. "Also dentistry combines the two things that I like; art and science.

Dentistry is artistry in itself because one has to match dental colours very accurately and both pencil drawing and dental work require much precision." Dr. Archer is a talented pencil drawing artist and some of her work can be seen on the walls of her dental surgery.

Combining her dentistry skills and her desire to fulfil her calling in Christian ministry, Dr. Archer has journeyed several times to Jamaica where she spent a week each year in Mandeville tending to the dental needs of underprivileged patients working with a church from the United States whose Christian outreach was centered on caring for children.

Assault of a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Obscene Languages and Disorderly Behaviour (Suspect Arrested) At 11:15am on 6th December, 2013, an anonymous caller contacted the M.H.P.S. and reported that there were several young men in the area of a local grocery store located in Murphy Town,

Abaco, using Obscene Language and appeared to have been fighting. Police assistance requested.

Officers of the M.H.P.S. responded and arrested a male age 19 years old of Murphy Town reference to disorderly behavior and using obscene languages. He was brought to M.H.P.S. where he was charged for the offences.

Drug Arrest and Possession of Counterfeit Currency (Suspect Arrested) At 7:35pm on 4th December, 2013, a male resident of Central Pines, Abaco, reported that there is a male at his place of work located in Dundas Town, Abaco, attempting to pay his bill with counterfeit currency. Police action requested.

Officers responded and arrested a 30 year old male of no fixed address in reference to this matter. A $20.00 counterfeit note was also seized along with a marijuana cigarette. The suspect was brought to M.H.P. where he was charged for the offences.

Government announces closed season for endangered Nassau Grouper Press Release The Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation (BREEF) is pleased that the government has finally announced the three-month December 1 - February 28 closed season for the Nassau Grouper this winter, but further notes that it is time for the closed season on this highly-prized but endangered species to be fixed in our legislation, rather than having to wait on a Ministerial decree each year.

“It is just a few days before the start of the closed season and Bahamians are just being notified of this important closure.

Many people think that the closed season on Nassau Grouper is legislated in The Bahamas. It is not. The decision to announce a closed season or not, rests with the Minister of Agriculture, Marine Resources & Local Government. This delay highlights the critical need to have fixed dates for the closed season, as is the case for other valuable species such as the crawfish and the

stone crab so that fishermen, the public and law enforcement agencies can be prepared.

This is not just about a fish, people’s livelihoods will be significantly impacted if this fishery collapses.” says BREEF’s Executive Director, Casuarina McKinney-Lambert.

The iconic Nassau Grouper is listed as "Endangered" on the IUCN's Red List, as its populations have declined by about 60% over the past three decades. In areas such as Florida and Bermuda, the Nassau Grouper Fishery no longer exists, largely because people have been allowed to fish on and fish out entire spawning aggregations during their breeding period from November -March. This collapse does not have to be a part of the future for the Bahamian Nassau grouper fishery, but serious action needs to take place now to avoid it.

The Bahamas has some of the last remaining populations of Nassau Grouper. We only need to look to neighbouring countries to see what will happen if we

continue to delay having an annual fixed closed season for this valuable fish that helps to sustain the livelihood of our fishermen, attracts eco-tourists to our country and is an important part of Bahamian food culture.

Nassau Grouper has already started to disappear from many restaurant menus that used to read 'grouper fingers' but now read 'fish fingers' for example. The scientific evidence, both regionally and locally, clearly sounds the need for us to take further action to protect this species.

Many historically abundant spawning aggregation sites have already been lost.

An example is the well-known Bimini aggregation site that was recorded having 30,000-100,000 fish in 1970, and is now completely gone, documented scientists from BREEF, Scripts Institute of Oceanography and SCRFA earlier this year.

"For twenty years now, BREEF has advocated to ensure a sustainable Nassau Grouper fishery. We remain hopeful that the government will take this next step in the best interest of Bahamians and do what is necessary to protect Nassau Grouper for the benefit of present and future generations."

In the meantime, all residents and visitors can help by not catching, selling or purchasing Nassau Grouper from De-

cember 1 - February 28. Please support our local fishermen, seafood vendors and restaurants by purchasing other fish during this period.

The Oasis Restaurant to open in New Year

By Canishka Alexander Trio Culinary’s partners have branched out to include The Oasis Restaurant under their premier brand. With a combined 35 years of experience, Chefs Antonio Huyler, David Thompson and Demeko Saunders, are all looking forward to elevating the dining experience of Abaconians through their catering and consulting business.

The Oasis will feature a unique dinein or take-out experience with a menu that boasts Bahamian, Japanese, Chinese, Cuban, Mexican, Haitian and Jamaican cuisines. To ensure that their menu maintains its high mouth-watering standard, Trio ensures that the freshest ingredients are used by supporting local farmers and fishermen.

Huyler expressed that he and his partners look to create an interactive restaurant where live food stations will be set up and food will be reasonably priced. Their intent is to provide value for their customer’s money, and ensure that the person who greets them is knowledgeable and sets the tone for them.

The Oasis’ Grand Opening is scheduled for Jan. 6 with the Grand Opening Party taking place Jan. 6. Huyler added that the opening of the restaurant represents an intriguing and fresh new start for them as business owners and chefs.

Through the culinary expressions and the restaurant’s vibrant ambience, The Oasis offers a “paradise of sorts.” He said that they are fascinated by the challenge of creating something special through such a creative approach.

While the focus is on in-house service, the restaurant will be able to accommodate private events, and a private booth can be reserved for a party of 12 to 18 persons. Customers are encouraged to take advantage of Trio’s catering services for birthday parties and weddings.

Business hours are Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for lunch and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for dinner. Trio also provides grilled food and pasta at DNR nightclub on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. for the night owls.
