By Jennifer Hudson Adjudications for the E Clement Bethel National Arts Festival were held on Abaco from April 1-4. Each year students from all of the family Islands compete against each other and adjudications had already been held in Nassau and Grand Bahama. For the next several weeks classes will be adjudicated throughout the remaining family Islands. The very highly qualified panel of adjudicators for this year's festival includes Valentine Maura for drama, Elizabeth Thornton for music and Lawrence Carrol for dance. Mr Maura graduated from the Acting Academy of New York, Mr Carroll graduated with honours from the University of Ryerson, Canada and Mrs Thornton is a multitalented music teacher of 43 years experience and is the representative for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Festival coordinator is Ms Keva Cartwright, Senior Cultural Affairs Officer with the Ministry of Culture. "One thing about competition is that it makes people keen and makes them try harder and make even more effort to be the best they can be. Please see Art

By Canishka Alexander With an opening date of December 2014 in sight, Baha Mar representatives are intent on filling 4,000 staff positions. As a result, Baha Mar Academy, the recruitment and training arm of the company, met with 125 high school students last month on Abaco to discuss career opportunities, the recruitment process, how to apply online and the experience of working at Baha Mar. Students from Abaco Central High School; S. C. Bootle High School; Long Bay School; Forest Heights Academy; St. Francis de Sales School; and Agape Christian School were engaged in a number of group activities throughout the day. Meanwhile, Kristin Wells, director of Baha Mar Academy, was excited about the turnout for their visit. Wells was accompanied by Jarrel Hall, Lashanta Smith and Vonya Ifill of Baha Mar; Beth Cantor of Grand Hyatt Baha Mar; and Benjamin Sims, director of Human Resources, for Mondrian at Baha Mar. Developed by Sarkis Izmirlian, Baha Mar’s chairman and chief executive officer, each of the hotels – the Baha Mar Casino & Hotel, Rosewood, Mondrian and the Grand Hyatt – will convey a different platform, history and feeling for guests. If they win they are the best in the whole country not just on their own island," she stated. Schools on Abaco participating in the National Arts Festival this year were Angels Academy, Every Child Counts, Man O War Primary, Crossing Rocks Primary , Abaco Central High , Central Abaco Primary, J.A. Pinder Primary, St Francis de Sales and Agape Christian School. All participated in the music and drama category with Crossing Rocks Primary and JA Pinder Primary also participating in the dance category. Angels Academy, Agape Christian School and Abaco Central High will also participate in the arts and crafts category later in the year. At the end of each session the judges spoke very kindly to the participants announcing not only the marks awarded them but also giving them very helpful advice.

Valentine Maura shared his acting abilities with the children showing them how they could have improved their performances, Lawrence Carrol demonstrated various dance moves showing the students how to use their upper body more and helping them with particular dance steps and Mrs Thornton shared tips on breathing techniques, enunciation and how to present themselves in a more professional way. She stated that it was a joy to listen to such talents and to be able to offer help and suggestions for improvement. The talent on Abaco greatly impressed the adjudicators and there were some very high marks awarded across the board but the three schools which received the highest praise were the two schools in the South, JA Pinder and Crossing Rocks, and the St Francis de Sales School. The two schools in the south both presented Junkanoo dances which scored highly and two young students of the JA Pinder per-

formed a modern dance which elicited very high praise from the dance adjudicator. Their choir also dazzled with the beautiful song ‘Cum By Ya’. A 10-year-old boy who was the only soloist at CAPS, won very high praise from the music judge for his solo for which he gained 89 marks. Students of the St Francis de Sales School brought the week of adjudications to a climax on Friday afternoon with a very impressive finale. The singing was outstanding with many achieving marks above 90 which is distinction level. A gospel choir comprising teachers and students gained 91 for their offering, a gospel quartet of four teachers gained 93, an amazing pop solo ‘All of Me’ sung by Ashanti Duncanson gained 92 while the junior choir also gained 92 for their rendition of the charming song ’Winnie the Pooh’ . The highest mark of 94 for the entire session on Abaco was given to the group of senior students and teachers for their rendition of the song ‘Moon River’. "This was beautifully staged and gave me goosebumps," stated Mrs Thornton, Please see Art

Certainly, the Baha Mar Casino & Hotel exudes a vibrant, high energy and flamboyant feel, while Rosewood is featured as a high-end destination with classic, elegant and timeless attributes. The Mondrian appeals to the artistic nature of its guests and gives a homely feeling with its white, airy space. The Grand Hyatt generates an aquatic and calm surrounding. Wells boasted that Baha Mar’s standard of service excellence and attention to detail is what makes it so diverse and unique. A total of three job fairs were held from March 27-29 at St. John the Baptist Parish Hall and Agape Christian School’s Grace Gym. More than 100 potential candidates had signed up online and were invited to bring along resumés for their interviews. Among the high school students, Conrad Davis of St. Francis de Sales School said he was impressed with the

slideshow presentation and the presenters. He described the job fair as entertaining, lively and interactive with the games and group activities. Shakir Michel of Long Bay School said he learned quite a bit about Baha Mar, and he likes how it is set up as a resort. He expressed interest in working there although he has not decided on a position as yet. However, Gabrielle Davis of Abaco Central High School said she is interested in becoming a massage therapist. She was also impressed by the attractiveness and the amenities offered by Baha Mar “I like how they have Bahamian culture and tradition with the food and the art,” Gabrielle remarked. “In the resort, you can see things like the conch shells and even a painting of a Junkanoo scene on the floors of public spaces and the [guest] rooms.” Indeed, Baha Mar will feature an art gallery with an extensive collection of Bahamian art as well as work produced in on-

site artist studios. The tour concluded with Baha Mar representatives visiting more than 3,000 local high school and college students throughout the country with additional stops in Grand Bahama, Bimini, Exuma, Eleuthera and Long Island. Interested candidates are asked to complete an online application at: www. bahamar.com/careers/opportunities.

School & Youth News Dental hygienist visits preschoolers at Kingdom Care 4 Kidz

Above: Giselle Knowles teaching preschoolers about dental hygiene. By Canishka Alexander Giselle Knowles, a dental hygienist from Abaco Dental Associates, visited Kingdom Care 4 Kidz located in Central Pines on March 18. Knowles’ audience ranged from babies at the school’s nursery to pre-school children up to age 4 in K-4. During her presentation, Knowles spoke to the children about the importance of taking care of their teeth, and making sure they have all of their teeth as well as eating healthy snacks to prevent “sugar

bugs” from forming. The “sugar bugs” were in reference to cavities. To the children’s delight, she demonstrated how to properly brush teeth with a large mouth/teeth model and a toothbrush. She also asked each child to open their mouths widely to see if they had any cavities, which would require a visit to the dentist. As they get older, Knowles said they should introduce flossing. Again, she emphasized the importance of eating proper

snacks because children should not have cavities. While the four-year-old students were able to grasp the information she shared and were more interactive throughout the presentation, Knowles said the information was a bit more challenging for the one and two-year-olds to understand. Nevertheless, children should begin dental visits as early as twelve months. “They should start as early as 12 months even if they’ll just get in the chair, and we can have a look,” Knowles suggested. “We can polish the whole mouth, and then when they get to the age where they don’t swallow, we can start the fluoride treatments. Fluoride is just an element that helps protect the teeth against cavities.” At Abaco Dental Associates, Knowles works along with three dentists from Nassau. They are: Dr. Ricardo Crawford, general dentist; Dr. Kristen Darville, a pedodontist specializing in children’s dentistry from 12 months to 18 years; and Dr. Barry Russell, an orthodontist.

Bahamas Outstanding Students Foundation awards Abaco students By Samantha Evans This year, the Bahamas Outstanding Students Foundation (BOSF) is celebrating nineteen years in The Bahamas and ten years on Abaco. The mantra for this Foundation is “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize.” It is their goal to honour top achievers across The Bahamas in the areas of academics and sports. Approximately 130 students were honoured at Agape’ Grace Gym on Thursday night March 27, 2014 beginning at 6:30pm. In attendance were BOSF founder and CEO Trevor Ricardo Whylly and Treasurer and Member of the Board of Directors Greg Smith, the latter of whom brought brief remarks. Presiding over the activities for the evening was Local Coordinator, William Davis. He stated that amidst all of the negativity being reported in our country,

he is proud to highlight positive things that young people are doing across Abaco schools and communities. He told those in attendance that we need to get back to those days when neighbors looked out for each other and each other’s children. He added that we cannot expect communities to get better until the neighborhood is the way it should be. He admonished all present to do their part to make Abaco communities better for our children and future generations to come. Mrs. Simmons, Assistant Island Administrator, brought brief remarks on behalf of Senior Island Administrator Preston Cunningham. She congratulated the students and told them that even though these accomplishments are great, that their journey has just begun. She realizes that they had struggles and challenges to get to this point but if they want success to continue to follow them as they journey forward, then they must stay on the path they are on no matter how tough it may become. Leslie Rolle, Deputy Superintendent for Abaco, brought brief remarks in the absence of Superintendent Dr. Lenora Black. He commended the founders of the BOSF for the great work they are doing to honor students across the Bahama Islands. He encouraged the Grade 12 students to continue on as they are headed for much harder work as they leave the confines of the school grounds. He told the students to not forget their humble beginnings nor those who have sown into their lives. After two great performances by Sherry Rolle and The Central Abaco Primary School Band, Mr. Smith brought remarks. He encouraged the students to dream big and to continually acquire knowledge. He looked at them and stated that he knows that he is looking into the faces of leaders and world changers, but they have to keep their eyes steadily on the prize to make these dreams come to fruition. He added that they have great plans for the foundation, some of which will impact Abaco. He noted that next year, they will offer a scholarship to the top finisher in every category and introduce a Rhetoric Category where the high school students will have to give a speech on a topic given. This will be a separate award yielding a book scholarship to the top finisher.

Awards were given out to the students in three categories: Opal, Emerald and Diamond. Students receiving awards for sports came from: Agape Christian School, James A. Pinder, St. Francis de Sales, Treasure Cay Primary School, and S. C. Bootle High School. Those schools whose students received the Opal Academic Awards (Grade 6) were:– Man-O-War Primary School, St. Francis de Sales, Amy Roberts, Central Abaco Primary, Agape Christian, Cherokee Primary, Fox Town Primary, James A. Pinder, Treasure Cay Primary, Moore’s Island All-Aged, Angels Academy, Long Bay and Hope Town School. Those schools whose students receiving the Emerald Academic Awards (Grade 12) were: Agape Christian School, S. C. Bootle High, Forest Heights Academy, St. Francis de Sales, Abaco Central High and Long Bay School. Those schools whose students got the Diamond Academic Awards (4.0 GPA) were: Man-O-War Primary School, St. Francis de Sales, and Forest Heights Academy. The primary school students received medals and the high school students received trophies. All students were given a certificate of achievement. Special awards were sponsored by Hon. Renardo Curry and T. Ricardo Whylly.

Angels Academy celebrates Cultural Day 2014

Above: Angels Academy students performing “La Cucaracha.” Special guests for the day were: Wynsome Ferguson, manager of the Abaco Tourist Office; Felamease Sawyer of the Dept. of Education; and Ishmael “Stretch” Morley of Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture. By Canishka Alexander Angels Academy presented its Cultural Day Celebration 2014 under the theme: “Las Lenguas Abren Puertas,” translated as “Languages Open Doors.” The lively program began with the entrance of the Bahamian flag to the singing of the National Anthem, and a welcome address (Bienvenidos) by students of Grades 1 & 2. Special guests in attendance were: Wynsome Ferguson, manager of the Abaco Tourist Office; Felamease Sawyer of the Dept. of Education; and Ishmael “Stretch” Morley of Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture. Highlights of the celebration included a flag display of Spanish-speaking coun-

tries; poetry about life, a grandmother and a sincere man; and a combination of skits and plays. The audience and the students piped up to the sounds of the popular: La Cucaracha. Soon the Vote of Thanks was given, and Spanish Teacher Eva Adderley thanked everyone for their support and attendance. Barbara Johnson commended the students on a fantastic performance before inviting guests to sample the Spanish cuisine that had been prepared. She also recommended a tour of the school and the students’ classrooms to view the art projects they had completed under the guidance of Stacey Adderley, their art teacher.

First Urban Renewal Fun Day a success By Jennifer Hudson Despite predictions by the weather department of inclement weather for Saturday, March 29, the rain held off. This was very good news for the Urban Renewal team's Fun Day. The event was held at Browns Bay in Dundas Town from 11 AM to 4 PM and provided a lot of fun for children ages 6 to 12 years. Sandy Bootle, Assistant Manager of Urban Renewal Abaco, coordinated the event assisted by facilitators Ernestine Albury, Vernita Reckley and Weldon Davis. They partnered with the Urban Renewal

Department of the Royal Bahamas Police Force under the leadership of Woman Sergeant Joyce Smith and PC Kenton Clarke. Supervision of the children for the day was provided by members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and Rangers though no swimming was allowed. The children enjoyed games such as egg and spoon and sack races, a quiz section and an Easter egg hunt as well as plenty of free play to socialize with their friends. communities. In order to satisfy their hunger and give them energy for all of their activities, the children were able to enjoy grilled chicken and corn, hot dogs and hamburgers, cupcakes and popsicles, with fruit punch and water to quench their thirst. A large number of children turned out for this first Urban Renewal Fun Day and showed by their happy laughter that they were having a good time. Mrs. Bootle said that she would like to thank all sponsors who donated towards making this first Fun Day a success especially their primary sponsors of Island Luck and North Rock Water. She added that they are looking forward to many more Fun Days which will be held in different communities and for different age brackets so that all young people will get a turn to come out and enjoy themselves. Age-appropriate activities will be organised which, she said, will probably include a dancing for the teens.

IT Cadet Program Closing Ceremony held under the theme: Empowering Youth through Technology By Mirella Santillo Seven cadets from Abaco Central High School and SC Bootle High School, who attended the Information Technology Program during the school year, were awarded their closing certificates during a short ceremony held at the Government Complex cafeteria on Thursday, April 3.

Vincent Coakley, who tutored the students in mathematics, and Janette Pratt, the coordinator for the IT Cadet Program, officiated the graduation ceremony. Before the certificates presentation, Dr. Lenora Black congratulated the students and offered some words of encouragements, challenging them to dream about a dynamic future. “Dream in colour”, she said urging them to see the world before coming back home. “Represent the people who have trained you: Mr. Johnson, Mr. Coakley,” she said. Following Dr. Black’s remarks, the cadets were introduced individually. Conrad Cornish (ACH), Deion Jones (SCB), Eranda Hield (SCB) , Virgil Bain (ACH), Tyshnyque Cunningham (ACH), Rosanna Parker (SCB) and Jonathan Dorsett (ACH) walked to the head table to receive their completion certificates from Mr. Coakley. As they took their turns to receive their certificates, Mrs. Pratt read for an audience of teachers, parents and siblings. She read the individual presentation each cadet had written of themselves and of their goals. Conrad Cornish who had been elected the “Most Outstanding Cadet” was asked to come and say a few words. He answered shyly that he was not prepared but that he would speak from his heart. He wanted mostly to give thanks to all his teachers and to his mom who always had some food ready for him when he came home. A couple of presents awaited him at the end of his speech. There was something for each student providing they had a few words to say. Most of them were thankful and appreciative of the program. Two students, Kavon Lakeman and Ashley Albury (ACH), also

She was pleased to see that the students had learned from last year's comments and thought that it was beautiful how the staff had worked alongside the students. Mrs Sandy Edwards from the Ministry of Education Abaco office organizes the adjudications throughout Abaco each year and was very pleased with the amount of entries this year which had risen from previous years. She informed that a mark above 85 must be achieved to be considered as a national winner. "There were so many marks awarded above 85 this year that we have many potential national winners on Abaco." National winners will be invited to Nassau later in the year to perform at the annual Prizewinners concert.

Homer Lowe Regatta tests racing skills By Timothy Roberts Marsh Harbour’s harbour came alive with activity as the 24th Annual Homer Lowe Memorial Regatta got under way with thirty-three sailing dinghies and sailors from Grand Bahama, Marsh Harbour, Cherokee Sound, Scotland Cay, Man-OWar, and Hope Town gathering to test their racing skills during the weekend of April 5 & 6 With juniors making up 25 of 33 sailors, the turnout was notably up from last year’s regatta as races began Saturday morning where the sailors were met with sunny skies and light winds out of the south. At the conclusion of races on Sun-

day afternoon the winners were clear. In the Optimist Class Branden Sands took the title winning in four of six races. This is Branden’s second time in a row winning the Hugh Cottis Trophy; however, Branden will be graduating to the Sunfish fleet next year. The trophies were beautiful handmade music boxes made by Jim Kaighin. In the Sunfish Class, winning five races out of six, Andrew Wilhoyte captured his third straight Homer Lowe Regatta Trophy. Ethan Lowe, Great Grandson of Homer Lowe, competing in his first ever regatta assisted in presenting the winners’ perpetual trophy to Andrew Wilhoyte.

Above: Homer Lowe winners Branden Sands (left) and Andrew Wilhoyte (right.) Giavanna Manni was top woman in the Sunfish fleet by finishing seventh and Jeremy Pleydell Bouverie was top Junior in the Sunfish fleet finishing a respectable fifth. Mr. Kaighin said the Opti sailors “sounded like a pack of Abaco Parrots with all of the chattering and conversation on the race course. It was fun to watch and listen to.” Jim Kaighin, one of the race coordinators, said that the “racing was pretty clean for the most part and sailors played by the rules.” The competition was great and sailors really showed off their skills as the winds changed direction throughout the day as well as an unexpected passing shower which cooled everyone off. Mr. Kaighin said that lunches were hosted at Snappa’s each day and “We wish to thank Bill Albury and Snappas for be-

ing our regatta headquarters for many years now. This is a great place to hold any event.” He said they are thankful to Perry Sawyer of Arawak Agency for his contribution to this regatta and to Faron Sawyer of Cherokee Air for his continued support. He thanked Rhonda Hull of L.C. Hull and Co for her behind the scenes contribution and Charlie Cook and Panama Jack for providing some of the participation awards. Last, but not least, he thanked the race committee, Dave and Lenore Mulock, Liann Key Kaighin, Kathy Losee, Ann Pleydell Bourverie, and Mr. G, as well as Jay Manni and Barry on the mark boat. “Next year will be the 25th Annual Homer Lowe Memorial Regatta and we are hoping to make this the most spectacular sailing event in the Bahamas,” he said.

School & Youth News Forest Heights Academy Drama Club Presents “The Magic Bookstore” On the first day of spring, the Forest Heights Academy Drama Club took the stage for its fourteenth year of production. This year’s musical, “The Magic Bookstore,” enchanted all as a young lady, played by Jenna Williams, sneaks into a

bookstore, and when she opens a book to read it, the characters come to life. The evening was highlighted by detailed costumes, memorable music directed and accompanied by Ranard Sawyer and delightful performances by twenty four characters, each one a star. Directed by Leslie Kennedy, Tia Knowles and student director, Janell Collins, the dedicated group had been working on the production since the beginning of the school year. The evening was truly magical as the young actors “left it all,” as they say, “on the stage”. Above: the entire cast of Forest Heights’ play, “The Magic Bookstore.”

By Timothy Roberts The Youth Ministry of St James Methodist Church on Hope Town held a fundraiser at Jarret Park to support a senior-high age group going to assist an impoverished community in Georgia in April. The group served up some healthy Thai styled food with chicken or fish on kabobs with a side of fresh steamed vegetables. They also had desserts on hand as well as some t-shirts that said “Keep Calm We Are On A Mission” for sale. Andrew and Nicole Berg, directors of youth ministries at St James, said they will take the eight youth “to go over to Georgia, to the Blue Ridge Mountains where we are taking some tradesmen so we can help some people who can’t help themselves in getting some electrical work, roofing work,

dry-walling, painting; the whole works.” Andrew said the reason they are going with the tradesmen is because “we will be able to do some of the things that other groups who come in to help aren’t able to do.” He said that the group of youth will be there from the eleventh to the twentieth and would stay at a nearby camp which would be their base of operations. “Apparently Blue Ridge is one of the most impoverished places in that area and so we are taking the opportunity to serve under the banner of the St James Methodist Church,” Andrew said. “We’ll be stretching, we’ll be learning, we’ll be growing. And we really want the kids to experience helping and serving in that way, and so they can see what that kind of situation looks like. He said “we’ve had a lot of help and support from the community in donating food, time and shirts to make sure we have enough money to get where we are going.”
