Visualisation of Sound - Studio Brief

Initial Concept Portfolio

Tim Stokes Visualisation of Sound

Brief Each week you will be supplied a short section of music to respond to. You have a wide scope of processes and approaches to experiment with. This is a good opportunity to apply and further develop your skills and critical and creative thinking gained through the process workshops, and workshop week and previous studio brief. In addition, you are encouraged to think beyond purely digital work. There is plenty of scope for traditional processes across both print and animation. You may consider photography, illustration, video or physical 3D or 2.5D construction.

Fame - Bowie, D.

Concept development

Inspiration taken from youtuber “DubstepLyrics who uses words to imitate sounds on the screen, a very fast paced and almost interactive style of animation. (See above and below)

Initial execution of concept, using Caviar Dreams font, (above). Post initial feedback execution adding dropshadow and changing colour background (below).

Further development; Changed typeface to final choice of Eagle Bold, added background characters to add theme to animation.

Life on Mars - Bowie, D.

Concept development

Inspiration taken from a style of dancing involving ribbons, ribbons flowing through the air invokes a feeling of weightlessness and passion, I wanted to recreate this in my animation.

Initial execution of concept, 3 particle streams following a dancing null object (above). Further development added an imitation waveform to the null objects (below).

Further development; Added Camera to video, moving in and around, adding more character to the video and emphasizing the dancing movement of the particles.

Shiny Things - Waits, T

Concept development

Inspiration taken from Arctic Monkeys music video “Do I wanna Know? Animated lips during a portion of the video. I wanted to recreate this but with the lips actually singing the song.

Initial execution of concept, I created 9 lip shapes on Adobe Illustrator imitating the 9 different shapes our mouths make when singing.

To begin with I tried to create the animation by switching between the 9 different shapes on a frame to frame basis, this ended up looking tacky and ineffective, so I went along a different route of using the puppet pin tool to animate just one set of lips as vectors.

Raised Fist - Disbelief

Concept development

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? For this piece I initially researched into the band Raised Fist themselves, and identified their image, noticing that they use eroded typefaces throughout most of their work.

I wanted to focus on the name and lyrics of the song, about lies, questions and suspiscion. So I decided to focus on using a question mark as the centerpiece.

My first attempt at putting my idea to design just wasn’t up to par, so to do something about it and bring it up to standards I researched into album covers, what makes them successful and how to lay them out. Which led me to redesign the cover as you see (left and right).

Architects - Dethroned

Concept development

Architects revolve alot of their artwork around the gothic style A which they use as an identifier, so when developing this artwork I wanted to at least include the A.

Combining the A with the gothic feel and the whites/ offwhites mixed with deep blues and blacks, I decided to work with the classic skull and crossbones. I wanted to project the image of the death of a “monarch

After playing around with different assets, opacities and colours, I finally settled on the bold skull using a very bland almost greyscale colourscheme. I felt this combination portrayed the feeling of a dead monarch the best.

Stigmata II - Hecker, T

Concept development

I wanted to simulate a vinyl, so I created a circle and wrapped the waveform around it. Then I took the lowest points and highest points to use in the artwork.

To develop this piece, I decided to work with the waveform, taking the raw waveform and digitizing it into artwork. I input the mp3 into audacity, and used a screenshot of the waveform produced to begin.

I added an additional circle to the centre to imitate the artwork on the centre of the vinyl and then used the Caviar Dreams font for the typeface in the bottom right.

Amber - Armstrong, C

Concept development

When developing Amber, I spent a long time listening to the song over and over, one word kept popping into my mind which ended up becoming my focus for this piece, “Purity.

I wanted to focus on the purity of the sound, so I decided to make an artistic version of the waveform. I first needed to identify my colour pallette.

To keep to the purity of the image, I left lots of white space and used very minimal sans serif type, Akzidenz Grotesk. On paper the artwork is of around A4 size, but would be presented on an A3 or even A2 size sheet.
