Remix editorial director Steven Fernandez spends an insightful afternoon at a wolf sanctuary with musical duo Paris Jackson and Gabriel Glenn to learn about the sound and spirituality of their band, The Soundflowers.

PARIS, WHAT IS YOUR CONNECTION TO WOLF THERAPY? TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH WOLVES AND WOLF THERAPY.

WHEN DID YOU EACH START WRITING AND RECORDING MUSIC?

Paris: I started writing around 13 when I bought myself a guitar. I didn’t really start sharing it or recording it until I met Gabriel.

Paris: I’ve always had a deep love for animals and I’m not quite sure where it came from. There’s a lot of beauty in the simplicity of animals. There’s a natural ebb and flow to animals; everything always falls into place, everything has purpose and serves Mother Nature in some way, and I’ve found humanity lacks that. Animals are so unapologetically themselves and they love unconditionally. They’re so simple and perfect and I wish humans could be more like that.

Gabriel: Most of my life. I remember singing in the car with my mum on the way to and from school every day. I started writing song lyrics before I even picked up an instrument and I would sing the melodies with the music living in my head.

WHEN DID YOU START WRITING AND RECORDING AS THE SOUNDFLOWERS?

Gabriel: The first night P.K. and I hung out we jammed at my rock ‘n’ roll band’s rehearsal studio.

We showed each other songs and even wrote a few on the spot. Everything fit together so naturally, from our voices to our song-writing style. I had never met someone who fit so perfectly with my sound.

Paris had always wanted to start a band called The Soundflowers.

YOU HAVE A SPECIAL BOND WITH NATURE AROUND YOU.

Paris: Yes, my dog is an emotional support animal and helps me immensely with my depression, anxiety and PTSD. Earthing is another form of nature healing I really love.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?

THIS IS OUR CONSCIOUS ISSUE OF REMIX. DO YOU FEEL YOUR GENERATION IS MORE CONSCIOUS OR BECOMING MORE CONSCIOUS ABOUT THE WORLD AROUND THEM?

Gabriel: Indie acoustic or folk are good blanket terms, but since going into the studio and adding a full band to songs, our sound has evolved to become more eclectic. There are now traces of blues, soul, bluegrass country and even beachy reggae.

Paris: Yes and no. Part of our society is definitely waking up, but I feel like the rest of the collective consciousness is becoming more and more apathetic, desensitized and distracted each day. It’s always been that way, though. I think the Universe has a funny way of always staying balanced.

WHO INSPIRES YOU WHEN WRITING MUSIC?

Paris: Gabriel is my muse; I owe a lot to him. The dark parts of my mind are usually what help me write the songs I end up liking and wanting to record. The Beatles, Joe Purdy, Ray LaMontagne, Radiohead and The Lumineers are big writing influences of mine as well.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO NEW ZEALAND?

Paris: I’ve not yet been to New Zealand, but I can’t wait to come and visit The Shire from The Lord Of The Rings!

Gabriel: Paris is the jigsaw piece that completes me as an artist. She creates so naturally and honestly; it inspires me to be a better songwriter. I think having a unique spirit like hers allows us to channel things we’d never receive on our own.

Man’s best friend From bamboo-handle razors to sugarcane packaging, London-based skincare brand Bulldog is the perfect mix for environmentally aware and grooming-conscious males.

Bulldog recently launched in New Zealand, bringing Kiwi men natural and conscious grooming products for enriched, thoughtful skincare routines. In 2005, founder Simon Duffy felt there needed to be a better razor for the next generation of shavers to love, not just use. Both water-resistant and replaceable, the bamboo handle comes with a flexible razor with brushed metal head, five tempered steel blades, a precision trimmer along with a lubricating strip with aloe. Finally, a sustainable alternative to cheap disposable razors. The packaging for their skincare range is also made from sugarcane plastic. For every 100 tons of sugarcane plastic produced, 309 tons of CO2 are taken out of the environment, resulting in a significant impact on the environment. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LOVE YOURSELF?

‘You’re the only person that is always going to be in your life. And if you don’t love yourself, then you don’t have that constant guaranteed source of love... Before my accident falling off a horse, I was 19 years old and I’d recently moved out of home. I was really just flourishing with my independence and then suddenly that was all taken away from me. My life changed hugely when I had my injury. Because suddenly I’m not able to move, I can’t feel and I pretty much just live a completely different life, but I’m trying to make a different life as normal as possible. You’ve got to love yourself through the bad times, and this could be seen as a permanently bad time, but if you can laugh at yourself then it turns into a good time. I’m like this for the rest of my life, so I have to make it a good time. I’m a much more confident person now being paralysed than I was as an ablebodied person. I think that’s because I have a lot of respect for my body and it comes back to loving myself.’

Blissed-out skincare Hempalchemy’s first products came about from founder Amber Van Vlerken’s desire to create a more holistic lifestyle for her family.

‘Currently our hemp is grown in the North Island, on the east coast and Tauranga, but we’re also going to be using Canterbury-grown hemp seed oil soon, which is super exciting,’ says Amber. ‘It’s really important for us to use New Zealand grown hemp and support New Zealand hemp farmers.

WHAT COLOUR TRENDS CAN WE EXPECT THIS AUTUMN?

Strawberry blondes are back in season, mimicking the autumn leaves and leaving you with that warm touch we’ll all be needing before we come into the winter rain and cold.

WHAT HAIRCUT STYLES ARE THE NEXT BIG THING?

We’ll be seeing a lot more of the modern shag returning, the solid ‘banged bob’ will also be making a comeback. Interestingly, the infamous mullet is returning to the scene, combined with a whole lot of texture curl and wave! For a while we were seeing a lot of long glass hair, but seasons are predicting a shorter, more cropped version of that. Currently in-salon we’re getting a lot of requests for the big bouncy blow dries, similar to J Lo’s Superbowl halftime show.

ANY GOOD HAIR TIPS?

My tip is for once you’ve finished straightening, curling or waving your hair - you should quickly blast it with a shot of the cool button from your hairdryer to really ensure you’re getting the most out of your style.

In a city obsessed with food trends, Andiamo stands out for serving uncomplicated, comforting Italian classics; linguine vongole, spaghetti carbonara and fried calamari, for example. We sat down with Gareth to discuss the importance of exceptional produce and having a healthy respect for it…

WHAT DO YOU THINK COMMERCIAL KITCHENS CAN DO TO ALIGN WITH MORE SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES?

It all starts with our supplier relationships and making sure we’re challenging them (and vice versa) in the day to day operations. Take fish, for example, I encourage all my chefs to steer away from snapper and tarakihi and to try

out fish like trumpeter, gemfish or hake to name a few. We also get our food scraps collected by a company called ‘Supertrash’ who repurpose it for compost.

SEASONALITY IS ALSO A WORD THAT’S THROWN AROUND A LOT IN THE INDUSTRY. IS COOKING STRICTLY WITHIN THE CONFINES OF SEASONALITY REALISTIC?

Most of the time in New Zealand you’re forced to be seasonal and I prefer it that way. There is simply no point putting a product on the menu when it is not at its best. I personally make an effort to go and visit the growers so that we can build a connection and they can follow where all their hard work ends up on the plate.

Being seasonal allows you to be able to offer customers the best ingredients.

ANDIAMO’S MENU READS AS AN ELEVATED EXTENSION OF ITALIAN HOME COOKING, ARE ANY OF THE RECIPES INSPIRED BY THINGS YOU LOVE TO COOK AT HOME?

Absolutely! Italian food shouts out simple family-style dining. My family love my meatballs, mac and cheese and bolognese, so I just make it how I make it at home.

WHY DO YOU THINK ANDIAMO HAS BEEN SO POPULAR?

We offer a no-fuss friendly service that also offers the same in the food. The food is comforting but done in a way that is slightly different from home. We do this by adding that little something extra, whether it’s the citrus olive oil on the kingfish crudo or the rich veal jus in the seven-hour bolognese.

Sometimes the best things in life are the simplest. That’s exactly what Pukekohe’s latest dining venture, Winner Winner, is hoping to bring to the Southern suburb; fire-roasted and fried free-range chicken, cooked to perfection embellished with a range of salads, sides, and sweet treats.

Need some substantial sustenance?

You’re not going to want to go past one of their sandwiches or burgers. The chicken sandwich contains a classic combination of fried chicken, iceberg, cheese and sauce. It’s simple stuff, but it’s guaranteed to hit the spot, every time.

The meat-averse are well looked after, too, and ‘The vegan’ will do more than just satisfy your cravings.

If you’re cutting back on the carbs, opt for the rotating seasonal cabinet salads, which you can top up with your choice of shredded chicken or BBQ pulled

jackfruit. It’s so tasty it makes healthy eating a walk in the park.

In a move away from menu stereotypes, the ‘Side Dishes’ section sports the largest selection, and when they say there’s something for everyone, they mean it - we’d suggest ordering a few to share for the table. What you might not have realised as you were launching into a juicy BurgerFuel burger, slurping on a Shake Out shake or getting your teeth into a piece of Winner Winner fire-roasted chicken, is that you could actually be the #boss running the joint.

To find out more about the extremely rad range of franchise ops with BurgerFuel Group, we checked in with Alex and Brad Smith, happy franchisees of the newest Winner Winner location in Pukekohe.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU WANTED TO BUY A FRANCHISE?

Brad: I think the spark moment was about making a lifestyle change. We wanted to get out of that rat-race. While we both worked in the city, we lived locally. There’s not a lot of marketing jobs out this way, let’s put it that way.

Winner Winner created that flexibility for us. We have a young family. It wasn’t meant to be three kids, it was meant to be two [laughs]. The store was meant to open in September and we had Beau in September, so it was all about flexibility

and being closer to home.

I don’t think we could have actually done this if we didn’t buy a franchise. If we were doing it ourselves, we would’ve had to create the brand, establish the food, bring in the right chef, worry about the menu, the location, all the pros and cons. We never considered other options besides franchising.

With the BurgerFuel Group, from the time you sign the contract you get a lot of support. Plus being part of a big group helps us keep our prices down. We get great marketing support as well.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU MOST TO WINNER WINNER?

Alex: It’s a really cool brand. We liked the fact that there was chicken, and that there was also a variety of food that lots of different people could eat together, especially families. There are salads for lunch, vegan, gluten-free options - the whole works.

DID YOU HAVE ANY TRAINING BEFORE YOU OPENED?

Alex: I did 12 weeks of training at the founding Hamilton East store. It was very intense, five or six days a week and long hours, but we had a lot of support the whole time. I got to work every position, starting as a dishwasher and had like seven shifts as that and my hands were

all wrinkled up. I then moved all around the kitchen. Although I don’t work in the kitchen now, I fully understand everything that my team are doing, and I can jump in if I need to. I don’t know how you’d do it otherwise, the handson skills that I’ve learnt throughout this whole experience has really prepared me for ins and outs of running a business.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS?

Brad: First and foremost, we want to make Winner Winner Pukekohe part of the community. That’s very important to us, with our kids especially, we want to support local. We also know that there are other communities that could come together around a Winner Winner table – so we would love, all going well, to explore this in future. We’ve really enjoyed the whole franchising experience so far. We’re really looking forward for what’s to come!

WHAT MADE YOU GET INTO THE WORLD OF SPIRITS?

‘Part way through university I took a gap two-year break, during which I travelled to the UK. One of the places I worked in was the Ladbroke Arms in Notting Hill.

The owner had a wonderful collection of Single Malts, which sat on the back bar. My mother and I visited Edradour Distillery for my 21st birthday, and from there I feel the seed of this idea was sown.’ - Desiree HOW DOES NEW ZEALAND AND CARDRONA INSPIRE A POINT OF DIFFERENCE IN YOUR PRODUCTS?

Each year there is a seasonal, small batch release of Rose Rabbit Elderflower liqueur, made with local elderflower handpicked by our distillery team. In addition to this there’s a seasonal release of Rose Rabbit Butterscotch Liqueur, which is made using a secret family recipe.

OUR NEXT EDITION IS THE CONSCIOUS EDITION. HOW ARE YOU WORKING IN THAT SPACE?

We continuously strive to make improvements across all touchpoints of the business, the final wash of the mashing process is used as the first of the next cycle, with waste grain sent to farms to feed local livestock. Our packaging is glass, easily and widely recyclable, although people generally love to keep the bottles for display purposes. The wooden presentation boxes that house our spirits can be used as planters to grow the herbs to complement Cardrona cocktails. Paper wrapping is used and plastic is being minimised everywhere possible within our logistics chain.

Choosing to buy Fairtrade products not only helps thousands of struggling growers in developing countries but also the environment. You can easily create change for people around the world through something as simple as deciding to buy Fairtrade products.

A wild life

If you’ve ever been curious as to what goes on behind the lens of mother nature’s most breathtaking moments then you should get to know French-Canadian wildlife photographer and expedition leader, Francoise Gervais.

Exploring the Arctic with a camera in hand, battling extraordinarily tough conditions and experiencing once-in-a-lifetime moments every day makes Francoise’s job unlike any other. A skilled guide and expedition leader, she feels like she has a social responsibility to capture these places and moments in time, ‘because they’re so remote and not everyone can get there because of harsh environments. Sadly, you can really see the climate crisis in action with my job. Particularly the amount of sea ice that is melting.’

The talented photographer’s work has come into spotlight recently with her hauntingly beautiful photograph now featured in the Wildlife Photographer of The Year exhibition.

Francoise’s encounters with polar bears are simply part of the parcel, she explains, ‘Any interaction with polar bears is special, especially mother and cubs, it’s just amazing. But one very frightening encounter I had, was when I was inside the cabin and the polar bear was right behind me on the other side of the window. Instinct took over and I hit the window really hard with both hands and the polar bear ran away. They can easily smash a window, particularly if they are searching for any food as it is so limited with the current climate conditions, they will do anything to get their hands on food.’

NAME: Kirsty van de Geer ROLE: Co-owner and teacher GO-TO YOGA POSE: If I had to choose one pose to take to a desert island, it would be a yin style pose called mermaid. It’s a great pose for opening up the side body and hips.

THE VIBE OF EAST WEST IS… Our aim is to provide a space that feels welcoming, peaceful and inclusive.

We understand that people come to us with lots happening in their lives, so we strive to be a place where people can find some solace.

MY PERSONAL MANTRA: I try not to put anything off ‘for tomorrow’. I like to address things as they arise, so that I can be present for students without having work stuff on my mind. Having the ability to seperate the business from teaching is vital to staying connected to what arises in the yoga room.

HOW I AM CONSCIOUS IN MY LIFE: I’ve been vegetarian since I was 8 and in more recent years have switched to a vegan diet. At home, the family eats vegetarian meals and we are trying our best to go plastic free.

HOW I PRACTICE MINDFULNESS: I have a collection of practices. I aim to use at least one every day to support me, to bring awareness and more stillness to my mind. Practices like yoga (posture, breathing, chanting), meditation, tea ceremony and The Work of Byron Katie.

WHY I LOVE WORKING AT EAST WEST: Connection and community, and seeing the impact that yoga has on so many people.

BACK IT UP Under Armour has changed the workout game for women with the release of the new Infinity Bra. Rather than sticking to the traditional sports bra construction process and cutting two perfect breast-shaped cups from a flat piece of padding, the Under Armour team worked with breast experts and liquid-injected the foam into an infinity loop design (the shape and motion that breasts actually move in during jumping and running) for a more natural and light shape. Remix editor Amber Baker trialled the new innovative sports bra across a variety of activities to put it to the test.

‘The technology behind this new innovation makes so much sense… the flexible cups are designed to not only offset impact across all levels but also naturally mould to the female body throughout its natural fluctuations. Having struggled with ill-fitting sports bras my entire life, I was slightly skeptical as to whether this bra would live up to its reputation but I wanted to give it a go. I’m a 10DD, and I chose the ‘medium support’ Infinity Bra, in a size medium for running, an F45 class and a reformer pilates class. The fact there is a range of low, mid and high support options to choose from means I could have the right level of support no matter what workout I chose.
