WELCOME Welcome to The Courtyard’s Autumn season. As always, we bring to Hereford a wide variety of quality productions to choose from and this season I am particularly thrilled to present The Courtyard’s production of Jane Austen’s romantic comedy Pride and Prejudice, adapted by Simon Reade. Jane Austen is one of the most iconic writers of the 19th Century and this is your opportunity to see the play based on her story of the duel between Elizabeth Bennet and her pride, and Darcy and his prejudice. Our brochure is packed full of great events with something for everyone from our ever popular Family Festival to the illustrious Russell Watson. Also, don’t forget to book your tickets early for The Courtyard’s spellbinding and magical pantomime, Sleeping Beauty. Last year we broke all Box Office records with 22,000 people attending Aladdin. So make sure you get your tickets early! I hope that you will join me and the rest of The Courtyard team for many productions throughout this exciting season.

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment goes to the cinema with this recreation of a remarkable cinema version of Strauss’ opera Der Rosenkavalier. Roll the clocks back to 1926 for this historically informed performance featuring a big-screen adaptation of Der Rosenkavalier that was once thought lost. This painstakingly restored silent film captures the subtleties of the opera’s comedy, and is accompanied by a live orchestra playing the music Strauss himself wrote for the film. Tom Kemp conducts the chamber orchestra - as Strauss himself did at the Tivoli Theatre on The Strand at the film’s London premiere. Before the film, soprano Miah Persson sings some of Strauss’ best-loved songs, just as they served as a prelude to the main event back in 1926. Tickets £23 FR PATIENDS RON & S

A LESSON FROM AUSCHWITZ

In 1941, Rudolf Höss, Commandant of the Nazi concentration camp known as Auschwitz, assembled his SS personnel in a secret meeting with the express purpose of introducing a new method for exterminating Europe’s Jews: a deadly poison gas. Every soldier in attendance was sworn to secrecy, and no one questioned its usage. No one except a lone Jewish prisoner, forced to participate and humiliated throughout; the very prisoner upon which this “lesson” would be demonstrated.

MARTIN CARTHY For more than 50 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it.

Rich HALL’S Hoedown Rich Hall’s critically acclaimed new show begins its second leg of touring. There has never been a better time to be an American comedian in the UK. Hall’s precision dismantling of the tenuous relationship between two countries is as freewheeling and deadly accurate as ever. His BBC Four documentaries, most recently Rich Hall’s Countrier Than You and Rich Hall’s Presidential Grudge Match and BBC Radio 4 series Rich Hall’s (US Election) Breakdown have built him a new legion of followers, as has appearances on Have I Got News For You and QI. But if you’ve only ever seen Hall on TV, you’ve short-changed yourself.

Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels (Topic TSCD527) was the latest. Whether in the folk clubs (which he continues to champion), on the concert stage or making TV appearances (he was the subject of the acclaimed `Originals’ music documentary strand on BBC 2) - there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn’t played. EUROPEAN ARTS COMPANY presents

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Following on from last year’s sell-out run, European Arts Company returns with a heart-warming evening in the presence of the author himself! A Christmas Carol was the first public performance Charles Dickens gave of his own work. He enacted it over 150 times and the effect on the public was phenomenal. ‘The success was most wonderful and prodigious – perfectly overwhelming and astounding altogether!’ he said after the first night. This Christmas, you can experience what it must have been like to be in the audience. Actor John O’Connor faithfully recreates Dickens’s famous performance of his best-loved ghost story. Come and enjoy a seasonal treat in the spirit of Christmas past, present and future. R

Mariele Neudecker

Faintly Falling Upon All the Living and the Dead Mariele Neudecker’s intriguing contemporary art installation of two huge trees, at once lifelike and obviously artificial, will be exhibited in The Courtyard’s gallery space in partnership with Meadow Arts. The trees tower over us but their roots are abruptly sliced like scale models, reminding us that they are not real. Other works by Neudecker are displayed around The Courtyard and Graduates from Hereford College of Arts will create new work in response to the exhibition. An internationally successful artist, with solo exhibitions at Tate Britain and IKON, Birmingham, as well as across the world, Mariele Neudecker uses a range of media to investigate the way we metaphorically interpret representations of landscapes and understand the natural world around us. www.meadowarts.org
