SHW’MAE Over the next five years we’re aiming to create more, dream bigger and continue to excel in all that we do. And so next year, we’ll be producing not one, but two ambitious events: the city-wide Dahl Centenary celebrations - further details of which will be released later this year - and a unique, biennial, multi-genre music festival celebrating the very best voices from across the globe. But first to our 10th Anniversary celebrations, and the pinnacle event in our calendar this year. Ar Waith Ar Daith, our Welsh journey of myth and magic will culminate on 12 September with a spectacular finale. Hundreds of participants from all over Wales will congregate outside the Centre to take part in this unique and shared experience. Take a look at pages 8 and 9 to find out more about this sensational evening of song, storytelling, music, dance, projection and pyrotechnics. We also have two major projects for young people on the go this year. Following nationwide searches for Wales’ best young talent, we’ve recently assembled the cast for our staging of the Welsh language School Edition of Les Misérables (page 20) this October. We’ve also formed our 100 strong 2015/16 Only Kids Aloud Chorus – keep an ear out for what they’ll be up to over the next few months. Another of our co-productions this year is Land of Our Fathers (page 17). This critically acclaimed comedy drama about miners in South Wales will open in our Weston Studio this October before touring across Wales and the rest of the UK. Finally, we’d like to congratulate all of the team here at Wales Millennium Centre. Thanks to their hard work and drive, the Centre recently received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development, the UK’s highest business accolade. As one of the very few cultural organisations to have won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise, and the only cultural organisation to win one this year, we are particularly proud of this achievement. Receiving such recognition fills us with confidence that we can make a real and positive difference to the culture and people of Wales, adding momentum to our desire to excel in all that we do in the years to come.

Breakin’ the Bay, the Centre’s annual celebration of hip-hop culture, is back for its ninth consecutive year, bringing all things urban arts to Cardiff Bay.

The globe-trotting tribute to the BBC’s best-loved sitcom makes another visit to the Centre.

Curated by Jukebox, Elemental Force, Kaptin and RMER, this year’s festival will feature high-quality showcases, battles, exhibitions, live graffiti art, performances, deejays, emcees, cyphers, beatboxing, community sessions, open floor and more. Showcasing some of the finest talent from the local, national and international hip-hop scene, there really is something for everyone at Breakin’ the Bay. Come along, get involved and get fresh.

With all the best gags, a three-course meal and a dollop of mayhem, Faulty Towers The Dining Experience is a loosely scripted, pitch-perfect ‘13th episode’ of the TV series. Featuring impersonations of the characters made famous by John Cleese, Prunella Scales and Andrew Sachs, Basil is manic, Sybil domineering and Manuel hopelessly language challenged. Just don’t mention the war… “Absolute comic genius!” Buzz Magazine

Emotional and political turmoil erupt in Bellini’s masterpiece, the most purely entertaining of all bel canto operas. Revel in stratospheric showstoppers, beautiful singing and a thrilling story that travels between two historical conflicts – the Troubles of ’70s Belfast and the English Civil War of the 17th century.

Few great artists convey their deep understanding of the human condition as powerfully as Handel. Orlando contrasts the hero’s descent into madness with sublime music. Harry Fehr’s stylish production fittingly sets this poignant exploration of human suffering in a hospital during World War II.

Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd. His skin was pale and his eye was odd. He shaved the faces of gentlemen, Who never thereafter were heard of again… The genius of Stephen Sondheim takes this tale of poverty, madness and spiralling depravity to a whole new level. He creates a recipe of musical phrases that lodge in the memory like the richest flavours and aromas of your favourite meal. Though after this performance, we’d guess that won’t include any variety of meat pie… Clever lyrics drive the story along with pace and pitch black humour, drawing you – almost against your will – into the world of a man pushed over the edge of reason by the corrupt and powerful elite of his day. Performed by Welsh National Opera. wno.org.uk/sweeney

Os oes gennych nam neu ofyniad mynediad penodol, gall mwynhau ymweliad i’r Ganolfan fod yn fwy cymhleth na dim ond archebu tocynnau. Rydyn ni’n falch o fod yn rhan o Hynt, sef cynllun hygyrchedd cenedlaethol newydd. Ewch i hynt.co.uk neu wmc.org.uk/hygyrchedd am fanylion.

If you have an impairment or a specific access requirement, enjoying a visit to the Centre can be more complicated than just booking tickets. We are a member of Hynt, a new national access scheme. Visit hynt.co.uk or wmc.org.uk/access for full details.
