Their fantastic programme includes Beethoven’s beguiling Harp Quartet, Op 74, the thrilling Wanderer Fantasy for solo piano by Schubert and finally, the stunning and uniquely beautiful Piano Quintet by Cesar Franck. WHAT A LOVELY WAR To mark the centenary of the start of the Great War, the Cilgerran Players present the ground-breaking musical satire first staged in 1963 by Joan Littlewood and her Theatre Workshop. MANON (MacMillan) Manon Lescaut is a beautiful young woman who falls prey to the moral corruption of 18th century Paris. Kenneth MacMillan brings Manon’s story vividly to life, with his ballet, which evokes the brutality and decadence described in Abbé Prévost’s infamous novel, as well as the feckless character of Manon herself – torn between love for the poet Des Grieux and her desire for money and attention. The cast of complex characters includes the callous Monsieur GM, the swaggering Jailer, Manon’s roguish brother Lescaut and his coquettish Mistress, but at the ballet’s heart are the duets MacMillan created for Manon and Des Grieux, which are among the most emotionally intense and erotically charged ever choreographed. (Verdi) Plácido Domingo returns to give his first London performance of another major Verdi baritone role. I Due Foscari is based on a play by Byron set in 15th-century Venice. The two Foscari of the title are the city’s Doge, Francesco Foscari (sung by Domingo) and his son, Jacopo (Francesco Meli), who has been brought back from exile to face charges of treason. Jacopo is innocent, but neither the pleas of Jacopo’s wife Lucrezia (Maria Agresta) nor those of his powerful father are enough to save Jacopo from condemnation by the hostile Council of Twelve. This taut, sombre drama provides the basis for one of Verdi’s most arresting early scores, not heard at the Royal Opera House since 1995 and newly presented in an acclaimed staging by the American director Thaddeus Strassberger, which had a much praised premiere in Los Angeles in 2012 and has gone on to further success in Valencia and Los Angeles. MARTIN SIMPSON There is no doubt that after 35 years as a professional musician Martin is, right now, better than ever. Widely acknowledged as one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world, his interpretations of traditional songs are masterpieces of storytelling. His solo shows are intense, eclectic, spellbinding and deeply moving. His career includes collaborations on stage and record with June Tabor, Dick Gaughan and many more. Martin has been nominated an astounding 31 times in the fifteen years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards - more than any other performer with 12 nominations for Musician of The Year, which he has won twice. 2008 saw an incredible 5 nominations for “Prodigal Son” and 2 wins, whilst in 2010 he had an unprecedented 6 nominations for his CD, “True Stories” and a win for Best Traditional Track, “Sir Patrick Spens”. In 2013, Martin celebrated his 60th year with some major festival appearances and the launch of his latest album Vagrant Stanzas. Martin will be embarking on some major touring throughout 2014. JANE AUSTEN'S MUSICAL ENGLAND Peter Harrison, Concert Royal’s director, made first contact with the Austen family music collection back in the early 1980’s during a visit to Jane’s house in Chawton in Hampshire. The Jane Austen Memorial Trust kindly allowed Peter to photocopy many of Jane’s precious hand written manuscripts. For over thirty years Concert Royal have championed the cause of neglected English eighteenth century composers and much of Jane’s music suits this drawing room ensemble perfectly. The collection, from which their programme is drawn, is a fascinating snapshot and includes no less than fifty settings of Scottish airs. In cluded in their programme will be some lovely songs performed by the ensemble’s soprano, Margarette Ashton, together with two of Dr. Thomas Arne’s Shakespearian settings and his chamber cantata, Cymon and Iphigenia. SIMON YATES Simon Yates abandoned a conventional life thirty years ago and started on a journey of adventure driven by a love of climbing mountains. These adventures have taken him to some remarkable and remote places and continue to this day. Simon’s career started dramatically on the West face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes back in 1985 - with a mountaineering epic celebrated in the book and film ‘Touching the Void’ - and has been action-packed ever since. After perfecting his mountain craft on cutting-edge first ascents in the world’s greatest mountain range – the Pakistani Karakoram, he was lucky enough be in the first wave of western climbers allowed to enter and climb peaks in the Tien Shan during the dying days of the Soviet Union. For a while he experimented climbing huge rock walls in a mountain setting producing a notable new route on the east face of the Central Tower of Paine in Chilean Patagonia. Most recently Simon has climbed and explored in some of the world’s more inaccessible mountain ranges and come away with many first ascents in The Cordillera Darwin – Tierra del Fuego, The Wrangell St-Elias Ranges on the Alaskan-Yukon border and Eastern Greenland. At the age of fifteen, cellist Laura van der Heijden was awarded the title of BBC Young Musician 2012 performing Walton’s Cello Concerto with Kirill Karabits and the Northern Sinfonia at the Sage, Gateshead. Since then, she has gone from strength to strength and her future engagements include the Elgar Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Haydn Concerto in C with the London Chamber Orchestra, the Dvorak Concerto with the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra and the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto in A minor with the English Chamber Orchestra. Her piano partner Tom Poster is internationally recognized as a pianist of outstanding artistry and versatility equally in demand as soloist and chamber musician across an unusually extensive repertoire. Tom appears regularly on BBC Radio 3 as soloist and chamber musician and enjoys duo partnerships with Alison Balsom, Guy Johnston and Jennifer Pike. On the heels of her triumphant Met performances in Eugene Onegin, soprano Anna Netrebko takes on another Tchaikovsky heroine in the first opera of this intriguing double bill, consisting of an enchanting fairy tale (Iolanta) followed by an erotic psychological thriller (Duke Bluebeard’s Castle). Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl who experiences love for the first time in Iolanta, while Nadja Michael is the unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s. Iolanta also stars Piotr Beczala, and Valery Gergiev conducts both operas. In October 2007 Ray Gravell, a man who for many embodied what it is to be Welsh, passed away after succumbing to complications resulting from contracting diabetes. He was 56 years old. Known to millions for his legendary exploits on the rugby field, ‘Grav’ was and is so much more than that. An actor, a cultural icon, a father, a husband, a man with a life packed full of stories that deserve to be heard once more. The Torch Theatre Company presents Gareth Bale as ‘Grav’ in a play written by Owen Thomas that celebrates the man and the legend. With the blessing of Mari, Ray’s widow, and contributions from his Welsh and British Lions team mates, this one man show will explore the life of a man who was as fascinating away from the rugby field as he was on it. Directed by the Torch Theatre’s Artistic Director Peter Doran, ‘Grav’ will remind the world once more of a unique life well lived and of a man who did so much more than eat soft centres. Themes focused in our consciousness buy the recent storms that devastated our coastline reminding us of the fluid and changeable nature of our landscape. The installation is titled Fimbulwinter, which in Norse mythology is a period of three successive winters, an environmental disaster that is the immediate prelude to the end of the world. While the world may not be ending, it is changing and this work responds to this by imagining of the end of things as they are, the mutability and adaptability of nature and the hope embedded in possible futures. Yn ei waith diweddar, mae’n archwilio pryderon ynglyˆn â newid hinsawdd. Mae themâu sydd wedi angori yn ein hymwybyddiaeth gan y stormydd diweddar y difethodd ein harfordir yn ei n hatgoffa o natur lifol a newidiol ein tirwedd. ::

Ian Watson was born and raised in the South of England, studied Fine Art at Hastings College and later completed a fine art degree at Howard Gardens, Cardiff. He now lives and works in Cardiff, having spent over a decade working in film and television post production. The drawings and paintings found in this exhibition are largely informed by a misspent youth hiding out with like-minded mutants in video rental shops and woodlands of East Sussex, head buried in headphones, soaking up the occult messages from a collection of heavy metal cassettes.
