Thursday 2 October at 7.30pm

Red Ladder theatre presents:

We’re Not Going Back We’re Not Going Back is about the 1984/85 miners’ strike… more or less. But, in this hard-hitting musical comedy there are no miners. Instead, we follow the fortunes of three sisters in a pit village, hit hard by the Government’s war against the miners and determined to set up a branch of ‘Women Against Pit Closures’ Olive, Mary and Isabel are like any other sisters whose everyday

squabbles became a background hum to the strike that forced them to question their lives, their relationships and their family ties. We’re Not Going Back tackles the resilience of working communities, the make-and-mend fabric of family and the power of sticking two fingers up to a government hell-bent on destruction… and all with humour, song and a six pack of Babycham. SANS SANS is the quartet of English multi-instrumentalist Andrew Cronshaw (electric zither, fujara, ba-wu, marovantele, kantele etc), the great Finnish singer Sanna Kurki-Suonio, English/Australian multiinstrumental reeds player Ian Blake, and Tigran Aleksanyan, Armenian master of his country’s heart-rendingly voice-like reed-pipe, the duduk. Formed by the musicians who made Cronshaw’s most recent CD, The Unbroken Surface of Snow (which spent 3 months in the top 10 of the European world music airplay chart), SANS is an instrumental and vocal combination not found in

any other band in the world, in which the four members draw deeply on their different but remarkably compatible traditions including the ancient Karelian songs that became Finland’s Kalevala, the sweeping melodies of Armenia and English folk-song. They combine to make a genuinely new music of extraordinary beauty, intensity and fluidity in which each performance is a new creation. Therefore the band’s debut CD SANS Live, released in April 2014, was recorded live on its Flanders tour in December 2013.

Tredegar Town Band The musical origins of Tredegar Town Band can be traced back to 1849, ever since they have represented the Gwent valley town that bears their name with pride - literally so - they are currently the British Open Champions and in the last few months have performed much of the musical score and made a cameo appearance in the critically acclaimed British film ‘Pride’ (filmed locally), which recalls the 1984 Miners’ Strike and the help given to a fictional small South Wales mining community called ‘Dulais’ by the London based Lesbians & Gays Support the Miners group. Along with performances of work that keeps them consistently at the top of the British brass scene, the first part of this evening’s performance is a unique collaboration with the South Wales Miners Library where the Band have created a musical arrangement for silent archive film footage that traces our mining heritage.

Martyn Geraint Monday 8 December at 7.30pm The Chimes (1844) is the second in Dickens’s series of Christmas books, with as powerful a punch now as it had in his time. In the run-up to the festive season, local porter, Trotty Veck falls asleep in the doorway of a church. Woken by the bells, and magically dragged up the tower, he has just one chance to change this world... but will he listen to the bells? The Chimes is a Victorian It’s a Wonderful Life filled with all of the master story-teller’s colourful characters and heart-rending poignancy. Fresh from successful adaptations of She Stoops to Conquer and A Christmas Carol, Lighthouse Theatre brings their signature style to this classic by the most theatrical of authors. With a company of five, carols, music and – of course – bells!...this show is sure to be fast and funny, inventive and entertaining; but most of all a Christmas treat to reinforce the message of this festive time of the year...

It’s the summer of 1984 Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support. But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the Union and go direct to the miners. They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a mini bus to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.
