Hello

Welcome to our Autumn Season. If you’re looking at something inspirational and entertaining to beat the summer blues this autumn, our season brochure is bursting with the world’s most popular musicals, ground-breaking work including our very own new musical, activities for the whole family, spine-tingling ballet and the latest news on our community projects. As we strive to fulfil our ambition to Inspire Our Nation and Impress the World, we’re busy developing the programme for our next international arts festival, Festival of Voice 2018 which will celebrate the voice in all its form from the 7 until the 17 of June 2018. We’ll be announcing the full line-up shortly, but in the meantime make sure you save the date! We’re delighted to report that our next homegrown production - Tiger Bay The Musical was a roaring success during its recent visit to Cape Town, and we can’t wait for our local audiences to experience this epic new musical at the Centre in November. We are also thrilled to be taking our poignant and bold production of Manfred Karge’s Man to Man on tour later this year following its success in Edinburgh Festival in 2015.

Mathew Milsom Rheolwr Gyfarwyddwr

Man to Man will return to Cardiff for just two performances prior to an international tour that will take us from London to Edinburgh before jetting off to New York to play at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. This will be our first ever production to be performed in the USA and will play an integral role in what we’re aiming to achieve by taking high quality productions made right here to the rest of the world. We hope you enjoy the array of performances, festivals and activities we present in this brochure – all from internationally renowned and truly exceptional companies and performers. Your support means that we can continue to bring the very best in art, culture and creativity to Wales – and for this, we are grateful.

Khovanshchina

Eugene Onegin

Musorgsky

Tchaikovsky

23, 30 September & 7 October 2017

29 September, 6 & 13 October 2017

Based on true events, Khovanshchina takes us back to 17th century Russia where the country is in turmoil. The noble Khovansky, joins forces with the Old Believers, as they rebel against modern reform being imposed by the Tsar. As personal and political ambitions combine and clash with both constitutional and religious forces, the struggle for power will result in grave consequences.

Tatyana is a young country girl convinced that the dashing Onegin is the man of her dreams. When she declares her devotion to him via a love letter, he rejects and humiliates her. Onegin then flirts with Tatyana’s older, engaged sister setting off a tragic chain of events – a tale of how unrequited love and the ways of high society can catastrophically collide.

WNO’s Artistic Director David Pountney and new Music Director Tomáš Hanus join forces for this revival of Musorgsky’s epic opera, addressing themes of politics, madness and death as relevant today as back in history. Combined with striking staging and powerful, unforgettable choral music, it promises to be an unmissable event in our Autumn Season.

Tchaikovsky’s best-loved opera, is based on the Alexander Pushkin novel of the same name. Simple and classic countryside settings are contrasted with beautiful ballroom scenes and rich costumes reflecting high society at the time. This poignant story showcases the battle between the yearnings of the heart and social convention, all through a score of wonderfully romantic choruses and evocative arias.

Sung in Russian, with English and Welsh surtitles.

From the House of the Dead Janácˇek

Die Fledermaus Johann Strauss II

8 & 12 October 2017

14 October 2017

Set in a claustrophobic Siberian prison, David Pountney’s production of From the House of the Dead is a compelling collage of the inmates’ stories as they recount why they ended up in jail. During a time of political oppression, each individual tale explores the extremes a person will go to, to right a wrong. A glimmer of hope takes the form of a great eagle that the prisoners painstakingly nurse back to health, a symbol of Russia but also of freedom itself.

Rosalinde is looking forward to a few days care free time with her lover, while her husband is facing time in prison. Her maid asks to be excused in order to care for a sick aunt. In truth all four characters are planning to spend the evening at a magnificent masquerade ball given by the prince. As the characters are brought together in various guises, we set the scene for a hilarious story of mistaken identity full of splendour, posh frocks and masks.

Janácˇek based both the music and the libretto on the semi-autobiographical recollections of Russian writer Dostoyevsky, who himself only survived the firing squad as a result of a last minute reprieve from the Tsar. On stage we’re following the story of a number of characters through an ensemble cast and chorus, but the true protagonist is the WNO Orchestra, conducted by WNO’s new Music Director Tomáš Hanus.

Centred around the extravagant ball, the events of Die Fledermaus are set to a rich, romantic score by Johann Strauss II featuring some of the most irresistible melodies ever written for the stage. The cast is led by Judith Howarth and Paul Charles Clarke fresh from their leading roles in Madam Butterfly for WNO in June 2017.

Performed in the new critical edition by John Tyrrell with performance suggestions by Charles Mackerras

Join us outside as momentum gathers and protest builds as speakers take to the stage – but is everything as it seems? As you’re guided through an art-installation to take your seats in the theatre you’ll hear the glorious sound of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and be immersed in two dance pieces: a new commission Tundra by Marcos Morau and the rarely seen Parade, reimagined by NDCWales’ artistic director Caroline Finn. These happenings are a recreation of Parade’s premiere a century ago in 1917. Revolutionary and scandalous it was an artistic collaboration between choreographer Leonide Massine, writer Jean Cocteau, composer Erik Satie, and designer Pablo Picasso for the dance company Ballets Russes, and which laid the foundation for the surrealism movement. P.A.R.A.D.E. is part of the Russia ‘17 season that marks the centenary of Parade’s first performance. *Subject to availability.

Following the sold-out and critical success of The Red Shoes and Sleeping Beauty, New Adventures return to the Centre with one of their most popular and beloved productions, Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella – a thrilling and evocative love story set in London during the Second World War. Matthew Bourne’s interpretation of the classic fairy tale has, at its heart, a true war-time romance. A chance meeting results in a magical night for Cinderella and her dashing young RAF pilot, together just long enough to fall in love before being parted by the horrors of the Blitz. Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella takes the audience into the heart of Prokofiev’s magnificent score, and the sights and sounds of war-torn London, with surround sound designed by Paul Groothuis, and a specially commissioned recording of a 60 piece orchestra, Lez Brotherston’s Olivier Award winning designs and lighting by Olivier Award-winning Neil Austin.
