Cantilever Shade Structures • Enormous design flexibility and options • Ideal for car parks, bus shelters, swimming pools, tennis courts, and sitting areas • Free span massive distances with only 1 row of columns • Waterproof or shade fabrics with a large selection of colours Requiring posts on only one side of the structure, cantilever shades offer enormous flexibility and fluidity in design and are wonderful solutions for many areas. Also able to be “bird wing” constructed, with central masts supporting cantilever spans either side, they are ideal for large car park requirements such as shopping centres, whilst also perfectly suiting sitting areas next to swimming pools or entertainment areas.
Framed Shade Structures • Cost effective shades • Perfect for playgrounds and sandpits • Cover massive areas • Vibrant range of available colours • Suitable for use on DECS sites Framed shade structures have been the choice of many schools and councils for shading and protecting playground equipment. Approved for use on DECS sites, they are an extremely cost effective structure due to their design but must be regularly maintained to ensure wear on the covers is minimised.
Permanent Umbrellas • Ultimate in outdoor entertainment solutions • No more worries about the winds – rated to an amazing 120km/h! • Centre post or cantilever, collapsible or fixed • Huge range of colours and styles Permanent umbrellas have taken the Australian cafe and alfresco dining scene by storm, and because of their enormous versatility and strength are now heavily demanded for many difficult areas, including courtyards and private entertainment areas. A beautiful contemporary addition to any outdoor situation, and still the best solution for cafes, restaurants, and hotels.

Barrel Vault Structures • Achieve massive spans and cost effectively cover large areas • Waterproof or shade structures • Perfect where single spans of 10m or more are required, or where heights must exceed 4m above ground level • Heating and lighting options available Barrel vault structures are a visually exciting yet cost effective means of protecting very large areas requiring significant height and large spans. The rolled roof offers a lovely alternative to traditional gable roof structures, introducing soft curves where otherwise hard, edgier lines would dictate the visual space.
Heating and Lighting Contemporary heating and lighting systems are available that can be designed into any structure, adding enormous flexibility to when and how your

They were not phased about having a lot of students moving around and ensured that the bunted off areas provided a safe environment for visitors. They cleaned up very well after themselves, as a lot of splattering and dust was created in the installation process. service. I was most impressed with the installation and how there was no mess or any other evidence that there had been digging to get the posts in. They really took a lot of care to leave the environment they worked in as they found it.

Light Horse inspires a marketing charge
T
HE chairman of the Marketing Week committee walked into the meeting with a riding crop in his hand. When it came time to report on the progress of preparations for Marketing Week, he handed the riding crop on, to be passed around the meeting. After the obligatory inappropriate comments that you get from a room full of marketing people, he explained that this was his great-uncle’s riding crop. He explained that it sat in his hallway on a coffer, near an old
BARRY
SALTER photograph of his great-uncle on his horse in his Light Horseman’s uniform. He talked about his kids putting sprigs of rosemary on the photo frame on Anzac Day and told the story of the Light Horse charge on Beersheba. He was not his normal jocular self as he told the story – he clearly had a great deal of respect for what
those men had gone through. But then he drew the lesson from the story for us as businessmen and women today. As marketers, we need to advance in the face of adversity, catch our competitors by surprise and charge on. There was some doubt about having Marketing Week during a global financial challenge – but now is when we need to invest wisely in marketing, now more than ever. And if Marketing Week could help to keep our businesses focused on making wise marketing choices, and charging on, then it would
certainly attract business people wanting to stay ahead. With international speakers Viveca Chan from Hong Kong and Catherine Eddy from Indonesia, as well as world-class locals such as demographer Professor Graeme Hugo, this year’s week will focus on the importance of charging on in a global financial challenge. So make sure your team is ready to face the challenges of the next 12 months and get them along to Marketing Week. I really admired the chairman’s passion when he talked about his
great-uncle and the Australian Light Horse at Beersheba. But I also admire the passion and commitment of the Marketing Week committee, the sponsors, the speakers and the delegates. Marketing Week is one of the largest gatherings of marketing professionals in the country – all seeking to learn how to do things better and charge on. See you there – August 25-28. ADELAIDE business contraction in the past six months has led to 19,000 sq m of office space entering the market. Figures released from the Property Council of Australia last week show Adelaide’s core vacancy rate increased from January’s record low of 3.4 per cent to 5.5 per cent at the end of July. Although the figures show a clear contraction in business activity because of the financial downturn, Adelaide has been more resilient than most markets nationally which have an average vacancy of 8.3 per cent. Property Council of SA executive director Nathan Paine said the increase was not surprising and was well below the city’s historical average. ‘‘While the times have gotten tough, the market has still been relatively resilient,’’ he said. ‘‘In relation to the historical trend and the recession of the 1990s, we are nowhere near those levels and we are unlikely to get back to those levels.’’
The extra 19,000 sq m of office space entering the market comprised 10,000 sq m of sublease space and 9000 sq m of direct office space. CB Richard Ellis head of research Kevin Stanley estimated the sublease space equated to about 400 jobs lost. Vacancy in the city’s frame – the CBD, excluding the core area bordered by North Tce, Wakefield, Pulteney and Morphett streets — was the lowest in the country at 2.3 per cent.

The fringe market of Greenhill and Fullarton roads was the third tightest market in the nation with vacancy at 4.5 per cent. Across the three Adelaide markets, vacancy increased to 4.8 per cent from 3.3 per cent in January. Mr Paine said there was some doubt about the Adelaide market’s capacity to absorb the 33,000 sq m of new stock expected to become available in the next 18 months.

THE Federal Government’s multibillion-dollar infrastructure spending on schools has created $1 million worth of business for Melrose Parkbased shade sail firm W.A. Young. The company has just finished the first of 17 projects under the scheme, a 510sq m waterproof barrel vault shade structure for St John’s Lutheran School at Highgate. W.A. Young sales manager Andrew Taylor said winter was traditionally the quieter period for the company, as domestic work slowed
because of the weather. The Federal Government scheme, however, meant the company was on track for the most successful winter period in its 50-year history. ‘‘We are seeing strong demand for schools keen to use the infrastructure funding to ensure their students have the best available protection from the elements,’’ Mr Taylor said. ‘‘It has been massively important to us and worth about $1 million in business. We will focus on marketing ourselves quite heavily in the education sector.’’ W.A. Young achieved turnover of
$3.5 million in the past financial year and expected $4 million for 2009-10. Mr Taylor said the global economic downturn had not impacted negatively on the business, which employed 15 staff. ‘‘This is the time when the good companies that are very professional in what they do become stronger,’’ he said. ‘‘The ones that aren’t tend to disappear.’’ The home renovation market had also led to steady work for the company. ‘‘Our business model is based on providing a high-quality and affordable product,’’ he said.
