Red Hook Aquatic Center & Housing The goal for this studio project was investigation of 3 tighly woven elements: future flood/sea level rise mitigation, understanding of aquatic center typology and realities of construction in one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world. Currently the site is home to now defunct factory complex, the choise was made to preserve the historical buildings and integrate aquatic facilities, while bringing the highly sought after coastal residencies. In order to resist future flood events all of the new construction is elevated 10’ above 4 mean sea level, including the interior spaces.
Above: Site Plan, showing relatinship between different building typologies in this mixed use neighborhood. Right Concept diagram sequence showing project development: - 1960’s era warehouse to be demolished, providing access to the shore. - The shore is brought in to empasize relationship between the ocean and the aquatic facilities. - Housing is introduced in place of demolished warehouse, the base is inspired by nearby building typologies. - The building height is maximized per Zoning guidelines in order to satisfy the program requirements. - To create interest in the building, the rectangulat glass box is broken up and tilted. The tilt was inspired by. cranes, which used to line the piers. Now the tilt allows for ubostructed views of the harbor and the city beyond. 5
Left: Ground floor plan Typical apartment level plan Center above: Rendering above showing the relationship between pool and the ocean. At the level of the swimmer, the pool can be perceived as extending into the ocean. Center below: Interior of the aquatic facilities, featuring different pools for various water activities, shallow pools for kids and families, deep indoor pool for swimming and diving and tempered pools (not shown) for relaxation Right: Aerial view of the site during 3 differnt water level conditions: - Mean sea level as of year 2017 - Water level at +4’ above mean sea level - Water level at +10’ above mean sea level

Adjustable temporary space to satisfy the commercial and recreational spatial needs of the Brighton Beach residents and visitors. The space is achieved by extending the boardwalk over the existing parking lot. The spaces can be enclosed completely or be freely open, with minimal structure to obscure the view. 10

Simultaneity
In collaboration with J. Burgos
The site on the Audubon Terrace required us to address the issue of the accessability, both to the building and the rest of the historic site. Being part of the brick competition it was necessary to have masonry construction. Taking cues from early civil infrastructures, we used masonry continiously, erasing boundaries between walls and ceiling/floor.While addressing the site topography and limited area, we used multiple levels at different axis to maximize available area, those connections allowed for similtaneous experience, that is different depending on the viewers’ location.

Construction Technology 3 - Sustainable Cabin In collaboration with F. Ali
Using our knowledge of construction methods, we we tasked with constructing a sustainable cabin in one of the provided climate zones. Throughout the semester we we adding layers of comprehension with the new information we learned, such as Sefaira analysis, light and sound calculations. Each time we had to adjust the model to make the whole project better. Therefore this was a good project to learn Revit, which allowed for maximum flexibility. 20

Linking Neighborhood
Existing site conditions at the southern intersection of Convent Avenue and 128th Street prevent direct connection of two streets. The form of the intervention signifies transition; side adjacent to existing townhouses is of similar scale and utilizes familiar materials seen elswhere in the neighborhood, while the opposite end of the building is much larger and of different materials. 22

Interior Yard Rendering
Street Level Rendering
The interior side of the building is designed for the private residents, the yard is raised and the materials are more domestic. To better control the interior environment, the windows have operable shades, that residents can control when they wish to.
All apartments are accesible using the balcony, glazed nature of those walkways reduce the sound that come from the busy street below. Perforated brick wall on the southern end connects with existing masonry townhouses, yet remains unique to the building

Weather Station
Following a research aimed at understanding the Novoya Zemlya Effect phenomenon, I concluded that it takes place in the atmosphere of the polar regions and causes visual distortions due to presense of air of differenttemperatures in the atmosphere. To recreate the effect of visual distortion, I decided to use water of different temperatures enclosed with clear glass.Extensive sun study was conducted to harness all of the available light on the site. Performance area provides seating for visitors to enjoy the refracted views of the city, deeper, in the pool area visitors can enjoy the play of refractions and reflections in close proximity. 26

Precedent Study - Shroder House
In collaboration with J. Begum
In this project we closely studied Rietveld - Schröder House, built in 1924 in Utrecht, Netherlands. For the first part of the study, we focused on reproduction of drawings. The challenge was the conversion between Metric and Imperial systems of measurement. For the second part of the study we focused on the model of the house, because of the miniature size of the house we chose to make our model at 1/2” = 1’ scale. On the second floor, the walls were made movable, just like in the actual house. The house was a reaction towards the old way of thinking, it is devoid of ornamentation, which is replaced by color. The many balconies and large windows express the desire for connection to the outside. Moving walls representfunctionality and rationality of new architecture. 28
