1st Street turns into ice rink last Friday

Mill City received an unusual blanket of snow last Thursday that created problems for drivers in specific spots around town. Tim Widmer of The Canyon Weekly was working at the office on 150 North 1st street in Mill City. “I was getting ready to deliver papers when outside I saw two cars that were in a strange place. The drivers were out exchanging information, and I helped them move out of the way. Not knowing it was that slick, I went back to get into my car. I looked up, and Jeff Hart came by saying more cars were piled up. We went out and a big truck was trying to get by, thinking the big 4 wheel tires where going to do the trick. Low and behold the driver started spinning the tires and then slid backwards and to the side to two cars that were stuck on the curb. A big crash ensued and mayhem continued. Jeff and I directed traffic, and a Forest Service Officer took over. It took over an hour to get sand on that spot, but meanwhile a new spot near the Museum started tallying wrecks. One car slid back and smashed another car with it’s hitch, impaling the door and creating a situation that fused the two cars together. Lesson learned, sometimes it pays to go slow, and sometimes it pays to not go at all. In the case of the wrecks I saw, I would say the drivers were in a bad place at a bad time, and the only thing they did wrong is get in their car and go that morning.”

Thanks to YOU, Mill City Food Bank is going strong

Letter To The Community,

I am writing on behalf of the Mill City Gates Community Assistance Center. I am sure a lot of the community knows of the losses that this program has endured this past year. First, the person who did a great job of running the program for many years moved away. He trained his replacement, who was also doing a great job until she too had to move. Then the wonderful secretary treasurer who was with the organization for many years passed away last spring. With these huge losses and large cuts to the food received by the Food Bank, our Community Assistance Center has had some serious struggles this year. As the year has progressed we have formed a strong board and are pulling together a great team of volunteers to run the Food Bank. We have people making trips to the Marion Polk Food Share picking up whatever produce is available that week. Sincerely, We have people who have stepped forward Lauretta Benjamin, Gates to do paperwork and to place our monthly

order. Some people are shopping for the best deals on food. There are people to help unload the shipments that come in, and many others are covering where there is a need. We started with, “Where is the checkbook? Who has the P.O. box number? And where is the key? Who is going to pay the bills?” Well, we would like the community to know that: We found the checkbook, the P.O. box number is 1006, we got the key, and the bills are paid! Thank you to all of you who stepped up and took on a piece of this ministry. Thank you Community for being there for us, for being patient as we sort all this out. And thank you for the food and financial donations that we are receiving. Please know that we are committed to keeping the Assistance Center open and that we will be wise stewards of the gifts donated to this organization.

This play has never before been produced and tells the story of a young woman who has mysteriously received all the gifts of the twelve days of Christmas, throughout every day. Mill City brings in the holiday season at tree lighting

By Michelle Gates the food. A beautiful tree and And the food the festive lights was good - BBQ brought out the holisliders were day cheer in those donated by the who went to the Trio, hot drinks 2nd annual Mill were donated City Christmas Tree by Rosie’s CofLighting. Commufee and elephant nity members packed ears came from Mill City City Hall the Sierra. It for the event, bringing kids to take a turn on was a cold night, so the tree outside was lit up Santa’s lap, choir members singing joyful pretty quickly, then the group moved inside tunes and of course, some who just came for to warm up and be serenaded by the Com-

munity Chorus. The Christmas Tree Lighting was partially a food drive for the food bank and they gathered a bucket full of canned goods. It was all made possible by the efforts of the Mill City Eagles, Odd Fellows, Mill City Pharmacy, Mill City Market Place, the Girl Scouts, Ken Cartwright, Thorin Thacker, Mark Hebing, Joyce Trout, the Santiam Canyon Calendar and the staff at City Hall, plus those already mentioned.

Second printing scheduled for first annual North Santiam Canyon Calendar

The first printing of the 2014 Beautiful North Santiam Canyon Calendar was exceptionally well received, and sold out in the first week, said project developer Michelle Gates. “I barely got them in stock before they sold out. I wasn’t even able to get very many copies to local retailers - that’s how well received they were.” The high quality calendar features images from professional photographers of areas around the North Santiam Canyon, including Detroit Lake, Opal Creek, North Fork and Niagara Dam. It’s cur-

rently in the second printing, and more calendars should hopefully be here by Christmas. “The printers haven’t given me a guarantee, but they’re working hard to try to make it happen,” said Gates. “If they get here in time, I’ve decided to do local deliveries by hand, so people can have them for the holiday.” She said that she finds it interesting to watch someone open their calendar for the first time. Usually, they spend several minutes admiring the image, then start asking her questions about where it was taken. She’s also hearing a lot of “wow”s - and lots of stories about people’s experiences at a certain spot. And people aren’t just buying it for themselves. Gates said that she has taken many orders of 5-10 calendars because the person wanted to send a copy to each relative, or to friends out of the area. “I love that they are going around the world - part of the project was designed to promote tourism, and hopefully it’s doing just that.” The 2014 Beautiful North Santiam Canyon Calendar also raised over $200 combined for several area non-profit groups, including Mari-Linn School, the Canyon Crisis Center, Meow Village and StaytonEvents.com. And Gates is welcoming any new group that wants to participate in the fundraiser. “It’s really easy for them. The groups don’t really have to do anything - they just have to contact me, and we put their name on the list at www.staytonevents.com. Then they get cash for any purchase made in their name. All the processing, tracking and shipping is done for them.” The North Santiam Calendar retails for $19.95 and can be ordered at www.staytonevents.com. The second printing will also be available at Rosie’s Coffee House in Mill City and Timbertown Resale in Lyons, once they come in. “I want to thank everyone who participated in the project, and send a huge thanks to everyone who purchased a copy. Your support of this calendar tells me that people really want to share this area, and I’m looking forward to more projects like this in the future!”

Sheriff’s office warns of holiday telephone scammers

With the holiday season comes an increase in holiday crime, including scams and unfortunately the targets of these crimes are often senior citizens. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is already experiencing a higher than average volume of citizens calling to report that they are receiving phone calls from people posing as debt collectors and demanding money. These citizens are being threatened with arrest by the scammers, if the debt is not paid. Unfortunately, most of these crimes are generated from outside of the United States and there is very little that law enforcement can do to stop it. Citizens must be proactive, be aware and protect themselves through education. Below are a few educational tips, as well as two web pages you can visit to learn more about fraud.

1. DO NOT respond to e-mails, mail, telephone solicitations, raffles or contests from unknown entities. 2. DO NOT answer e-mail warnings that have “undisclosed recipients” in the address line, a blank space next to “Dear,” numerous spelling errors, and/or awkward English. 3. DO NOT e-mail personal or financial information, including credit card or bank account numbers, passwords, Social Security numbers, etc. Most internet e-mail is NOT secure. 4. DO NOT be fooled by legitimate-looking e-mails, even if they contain logos, pictures, copyrights or names of legitimate businesses. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

Lyons artist, Denise Sanders, captured this dramatic ice flow that formed at Henline Falls this past week. Henline Falls can be accessed by foot only via the Ogle Mountain trail off of the Little North Fork Road. and is a beautiful, family friendly, destination hike year round.
