Turkey trot raises $270 for local dog rescue
The first annual Turkey Trot brought out some walkers, joggers and their four legged friends on Thanksgiving, thanks to organizers from Ark Animal Care and GoodFellas Dog Rescue. Starting at Kimmel Park in Mill City, the 3k pre-feast holiday sprint was completed
by 27 particpants, who raised $270 dollars for the dog rescue organization. The top five runners were: Davin at 16.26 minutes, Keri at 16.34, Mark at 16.42, Dorothy at 17.29 and Brianna at 17.29 minutes. “This could become quite the annual event,” said Dr. Keri Sanders, who said that
plans are in the works for next year’s event. “I already have a list of volunteers for next year and we’ll have an extra route as well as more prizes and catagories. Thank you to everyone for your excitement and support. Here’s to starting a new holiday tradition!” Info: Ark Animal Care at 503-897-6004.
Scammers offer to drop criminal charges, for just a few bucks During the past week, the Oregon State Police (OSP) received complaints from citizens regarding telephone calls from individuals claiming to be OSP Troopers, said Lieutenant Steve Duvall in a press release. During the calls, fraudulent callers are demanding money in exchange for dropping criminal charges or clearing arrest warrants against the people they call. In two similar cases reported to OSP thus far, male callers with foreign accents called citizens in Oregon. In both cases, the call was identified through caller ID as originating from 911 and callers identified them-

selves as members of the Oregon State Police, using titles of “Officer” or “Deputy”. The callers provided call back numbers of 410-387-7748 or 215-302-3662 and instructed the intended victim to call within a certain period of time and arrange monetary payment to clear an arrest warrant or to cancel a pending court appearance. This scam is not an activity undertaken by the OSP or any other legitimate law enforcement agency or officer. The OSP does not call individuals and demand money from citizens under any circumstances. The calls reported to OSP during the past week are

On friendship and thanks: from Jon Gates I look through my friends list and realize how blessed I am. In each friend is a story, and in each story there is a smile. If each smile is a rainbow, I am living in a multi-cultural paradise of love and harmony. With some of you I did good and with some of you I did, oh so bad! With some of you I am proud of the memories and with some ashamed or embarrassed. With all of you there is something special. Some of you I picked up, some of you I put down. Some of you I cherish and some I back “burnered” waiting for the time we might once more need to find solace or joy in each others company. Some of my best friends have already knocked on Heaven’s door and some are so young at heart, some are wiser
and more talented than me and a few are not very bright. I cherish each and every friend even if I don’t cherish all of the memories. Thanks for still being here and if we aren’t the best of friends or if you feel like we don’t know each other as well as we should. Just remember the time may yet come when you are the most important person in the world to me, or me to you. One of the few things I have learned is we can’t predict tomorrow and the friend you don’t know well enough may very well be the one holding you up tomorrow. You are all rainbows to me. Facebook post from Jon Gates, former longtime Santiam Canyon resident, now living on the Oregon coast
“Detroit King of Christmas” to be named at Holiday Lights Tour Town gets ready for season with an old fashioned hay ride judging ‘Tis the Season, and Detroit is getting ready for the December festivities with the first annual Holiday Lights Tour. When he was 12 he moved with his family to Mill City where he lived most of his life before moving to Tillamook, OR. In high school he excelled in sports, was a member of Santiam High’s football team and participated at the state level in field events: javelin, shot put and discus. He was very active in Boy Scouts, earning his Eagle Scout at the age of 14, setting a record at the time for being the youngest scout in Oregon to do so. John worked various labor jobs in his adult life, his final one was at the Rental

Center in Tillamook. John enjoyed classic rock and roll, the card game Magic, watching movies and he loved his dog Echo. He battled in his latter years with diabetes and the spent his last 6 months at Marion Estates in Sublimity. Preceding him in death are his brother James Bogle, his father William John “Bill” Bogle and his beloved pup, Echo. Survivors include: son William John “Doc” Bogle and Mother Judy Bogle of Tillamook, sisters Karen Widmer of Gates and Mary Wujcik of Aumsville, grandson Wyatt Larson and many nieces, nephews

The North Santiam has been high and that should continue for another week or so. Detroit Lake still needs to drop another 14 feet by the first of Dec, and it has been dropping 1-4 feet per day recently. It looks like the engineers have made good predictions. As soon as the Lake reaches the low level, the North Santiam will have the same amount flowing out of the Lake as is flowing in, and that varies with rainfall and snowmelt. The rain forecast changes regularly, and there is only four inches of snow at Little Meadows, at 4,000 feet elevation just a mile South of the Lake. It is necessary to look at the daily forecasts to make good guesses about river flow. River flow is forecast to be about 4,500 cfs. after Nov. 28. The run from Packsaddle to Mill City has wild and crazy rapids at present flows and should be avoided by recreational boaters. Mill City to Mehama has several strong and large rapids with a few whirlpools but can be run safely by experience people. Mehama to Stayton has a couple of large rapids and one awkward situation at the boatslide at upper Bennett Dam. The boat slide has had some damage, and the bottom of it has a vertical drop that could cause a boat to fill up with water. The North Channel that goes to Lower Bennett Dam is even more difficult and dangerous. The run from Stayton to Shelburn is comparatively easy. Shelburn to Green’s Bridge has one very good and easy chan-

nel through the logjam area, but it would be easy to go down the wrong channel and have a problem. The good channel is the left center route. Green’s Bridge to I-5 Santiam Rest Stop is easy, although there are a few tree branches partially blocking some channels in the last mile upstream from the junction with the South Santiam. Fishing trips can be successful now if boaters know where the high water fish locations are. The boat ramp at Packsaddle is the subject of discussion at several upcoming meetings. The ramp has filled in with gravel so it is necessary to wade boats out into the river from the end of the ramp. North Santiam River Guides Association is receiving input about possible designs to improve the ramp, and those ideas will be presented to Fish and Wildlife, who may get a grant to get the work done. The next meeting is November 28, 6pm at Neufeldt’s Diner in Aumsville. The Fish and Wildlife manager for the R&E grant projects will attend the meeting on January 23, 6pm at Neufeldt’s. The project will be submitted for agency approval in February. We do know that there are many huge boulders along Highway 22 near Packsaddle that could be used to make a berm above the ramp. The gravel could be dredged and put back in the river so boats could row out from the ramp again. River trip gift certificates are a good Christmas and holiday idea. Good planning results in good trips.

Our name is a bit different as you can plainly see... why you ask? It’s simply easy to explain... every layer... every texture... every piece of YOUR history has beauty... even if that beauty were to lie in a rusty ol’ bucket and it’s our job to find those layers... textures, those pieces of YOUR history.

Reality Check with G. R. Vince Johnson
Opinion
The Most Important Question in History As 2013 approaches we will be hearing about all kinds of lists such as The Most Significant Events of the year, The Most Important People, Most Important Ideas, Most Important Legislation, etc. So far, no one has said anything about the Most Important Question of the Year, or perhaps I should say “The most important question in history.” For some, the most important questions might be “Will you marry me?” or “What’s in it for me?” For little kids it might be “”Are we there yet?” or “Do I really have to eat that?” For bigger kids it might be a series of questions on a test for a Driver’s License. For Senior Citizens it might be “Now where did I put my glasses?” These may qualify as among the most frequently asked questions, but are obviously far short of being the important question in history. How about some questions that millions of minds have pondered without ever finding a reasonable answer? For example: “What is time?” “What is the purpose of the universe?” When your mind dwells along these lines, it is exploring an area where millions of others have pondered and left as even more mysterious as it was in the moment they went there. The idea for this Reality Check emerged when I found a notation I had written years
ago: “What is the most important question facing humanity?” This was followed by another notation: “When Einstein was asked this question he replied with four words: ‘Is the universe friendly?’” Why would Einstein believe this question to be the most important facing humanity? Was it his way of trying to make people think deeper thoughts? Everybody I know would like to live in a friendly universe, but where is the friendliness to be found? Isn’t the universe totally indifferent toward itself and all things within it? Would a friendly universe allow a Holocaust? Genocide? Continuous war since history began? I thought of wisdom within the old Indian legend about the Mother bear. When her cubs are very young she would die to protect them. When they reach a certain age, she abandons them. She knows that exact moment when her cubs must learn to fend for themselves. Mother bear has no choice. If she wants her cubs to live beyond her life she must abandon them totally and forever. Is the universe friendly? I really do not know why Einstein believed this was the most important question facing humanity. I am not even sure he was ever asked this question. But I like to think there is a chance it was actually asked and his answer was his way of telling us we must consider the possibility that the universe is as friendly to each of us as we are to each other.

Communicating with Heart
Periodical Postage Paid
How being grateful can give your words more meaning By Jen Hume, M.S., Licensed Counselor & Educator You know all that gratitude we’ve been contemplating over the last month (or longer)? We’re going to use that. Bring to mind something or someone you feel a deep appreciation for. Notice what happens throughout your body – really take the time to register it all. You might feel lightness; an energizing warmth that spreads from your heart into your arms and legs. Ok, got it? This feeling you are experiencing as gratitude is key to heartfelt communication. Think about it: the times when we communicate from this place are the times when our messages come across clearly and have a positive impact on those around us. What we’re actually experiencing is a balanced nervous system, which allows information from the body (i.e., the sensations of feeling gratitude) to reach the brain and be integrated by the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex takes it all in and allows us to construct a clear, relationally-focused message. When the body is not in this state, the nervous system is less balanced, even plain stressed and frustrated. The prefrontal cortex may not be functioning at its highest potential, leaving the “mammalian” and “reptilian” brain systems to do the job. (We’ve all experienced others and
ourselves operating from this state!) The question then becomes; how do we use this knowledge to communicate in ways that express our most heartfelt and balanced inner world of thoughts, feelings, intentions, and needs? Here’s one way: set the intention behind our communication before we get there. Remembering that we want to convey a heartfelt and balanced message reminds our body to prime for that experience. To do that, we take just a minute or two to bring back that feeling state of gratitude back into our body, balancing the nervous system and bringing the prefrontal cortex fully online so we can communicate from the truth and wisdom that resides within. Jen Hume is a Licensed Counselor & Educator in private practice serving clients where she resides in Stayton, with services to surrounding communities and in Salem. In addition to private counseling, Jen offers classes for parents on the last Wednesday of every month and workshops on a variety of topics related to mental health. The next workshop, Keep Your Bliss This Season: Transform Stress and Energize Your Mind, is December 8th from 9-10am in Salem.
