The year was 1945. We finally arrived at Edirne. I was very pleased that I could finally get some fresh air and I inhaled and exhaled like they do in yoga. I was getting fidgety. I needed to run around because I was sitting on a train for who knows how long. Edirne and Xanthi are not that close to each other.

“A new life awaits me.” I thought. I just kept running around in the train station. My parents asked me if I wanted to come sit with them inside but I said that I wanted to stay outside. “Son, we are sitting right over here, in this cafe.” “I’ll find them later” I told myself. I just kept running around and I got tired very soon I started to pant and sweat. I went inside and I started heading towards where my parents were sitting and my stomach was rumbling. I couldn’t remember where they were. “Uh-‐oh, where are they?” I started to panic, I saw a policeman walking towards me and I started to tense up. “Hi little guy.” He talked to me very calmly and nicely, when I heard his voice, I felt safe, like a knight held me under his armor. He held my hand and we started walking together, soon I was able to make out the café my parents sat at. I thanked the policeman and hugged my parents. I didn’t tell them what happened because I thought that they would get mad. They told me that we had to go to Istanbul because my older aunt lived there. So we got back on the train and we headed to Istanbul. It was loud and I could smell sweat and smoke. Lots of people were smoking. I was really tired. My eyes slowly started to shut. Soon after, I fell asleep. When I woke up, we were in Istanbul. We got off the train and I looked around, it was truly amazing. A few weeks later, when we found a little house to live in and when we

had understood the Turks a little bit, my parents were very lucky to find the same job as they used to have in Xanthi. They started working in a tobacco factory. Their boss was also Greek. A few weeks after that, a man had come to our house and he told us that our house in Greece was sold and the man gave my father 13 pieces of gold. We were so happy! We started jumping around, laughing and celebrating. A few months after that, we finally adapted and made life easy for ourselves in Turkey. At age 22, I became a policeman and followed my dreams. I continued for one and a half years…
