Are you sure you’ll be all right?” said my mom in her sweet soft voice. “I’ll be fine anne, I’m twenty-‐four years old now, I promise I’ll be fine.” I didn’t feel like leaving this opportunity beside, it’s a time were I can see different lives on each side. “Fine car, a BMW X316…have a safe drive boys.” My dad said in a cheerful voice. I hugged my parents tightly scared it would be the last time to smell my anne’s rose-‐like perfume, oh and my baba’s soft feathered skin. “Goodbye anne goodbye baba.” My friends Mehmet Bilgili, Mustafa Kemal Turas and Hagir Veleli and I drove off waiting eagerly for the adventure ahead. I gazed back at our bitter brown house between the trees. I had lived in Stuttgart, Germany for nineteen years now I felt that I was leaving it behind me.

A Soldier Guarding the wall

The Berlin Wall before it fell.

STAY BACK!!!!!!!!” the police shouted in a furious voice. His eyes were filled with flames and confusion. My friends and I stepped back, feared in shocked too afraid to move. The site at the wall was so intense, people stabbing the wall with hammers, it was so obvious how much the eastern side wanted a better life like the people in the western side. After a short while my friends and I explored the eastern side of Berlin. The streets where quite as a grave the stillness gave me the 3

creeps. No smiles their faces were even paler then a porcelain dolls face. “It’s unbelievable how people live like this.” I said in a frightful voice. “I know right, how can a government let his people live like this?” Replied Mustafa in a shocked voice. Everyone was dull and upset they were all statues of the conditions they had. Horrible education, bad quality of food products. Their lives where horrible when you look at the people in the west. All of a sudden I felt a slight vibration in my pocket it was my mom. “ Hello?” “Hi sweetie, how are things going…. Is everyone okay!!” “Yes mom everything is fine.”

“How is life there?” I told her what my friends and I saw, the griefe in peoples eyes made me shatter into pieces. “Well, I miss you anne, see you soon!” “Bye anne.” I hung up the phone. Looking into my friend’s eyes. “Let’s go home.” There I was next to the Berlin Wall. A place lot’s of people never been to. I have a big story to tell my family. I can’t wait to tell my children in the future… ‘This is the hand that touched the Berlin Wall.

Before and After Berlin Wall 4

O

AFTERWORD

n August 13th 1961 a wall called The Berlin Wall was built to separate Germany

into two parts, the Eastern that was a communist country and the Western side was a democratic country. The wall was built during the Cold War to keep East Germans out of The West since the west was a democratic country. Helmut Kohl led the Western side with his party FRG. Honecker on the other hand led the eastern side with his party GDR. My dad saw life from the two different sides. Everyone was in a devastating mood on the Eastern side because the government took all the money for himself and the country was left helpless. While the Western Germans were living a normal life, good education, good food, cleaner air. The eastern side didn’t have any of that. After the eastern people got their freedom, Honnecker fled from the country afraid that his former people would kill him. Helmut Kohl stayed as president of Germany after Honnecker stepped aside. He still lives today as a retired president.

About the Author

I

live in a house full of animals, because I love them and I hope they like me back. I don’t know if they like me back, my cat probably doesn’t, I don’t know why I guess it’s just a cat’s character. Anyway I’m a equestrian girl, I have a lot of wishes but one of my most popular ones are going to the world championships for horse riding and having my own unicorn. If I won’t get a unicorn I just want a horse, yea that would be more realistic. I also want to become a wizard or someone that has powers so I can make sushi appear any time I want to eat it, which is 24/7. But my biggest dream of all, which is already coming true Me at Singapore Zoo. I am in thank god, is for my family to live a happy, healthy, long, easy life forever. the same cage as a monkey (which can be seen at the back) Love you dad, mom and older sis! J
