The Mysterious Day The moment I went in my house I noticed something was wrong, but what was that something? When my brother, sister and I arrived home on a normal day the only person at home was my mother. Today something was wrong, something just wasn’t right. My dad was at home, and he would usually come later in the evening. He would come home starving from a long day of work. And Our neighbours were at home too and they barely came for a visit, I barely even saw them. When I stepped in the house I saw everyone huddled together around the TV it looked like a football team before an important match started. On the TV was a black screen with this ‘weird’ boring music playing in the background. It was marching music and it kind of sounded like many countries anthems. I was still wondering what on earth could’ve happened? It was soon after the Elections, but I don’t think that was the problem. Was there a big family problem? Was it a big tragedy? What could’ve possibly been wrong? 3

My mom was on the phone, and she looked worried, I had never seen my mother so concerned about something, It looked like she was about to scream, her mouth was open as she spat out words rapidly. “Is everything okay in Valencia mom?” She questioned my grandmother. “Yes dear everything seems to be fine around here.” She responded. Everyone looked worried to me, my parents were both shivering. But still no one told me what was going on, I was standing looking like an idiot because I was trying to get on with my afternoon, I had homework to do, I also wanted to watch TV but I didn't know what was going on. I wasn’t part of this problem, but I assumed I was because I was at the same house, if I was the problem someone would’ve told me by now. My mom then came near me and explained to my sister, my brother and I what was going on. “There was a coup attempt earlier in the day, there is no school tomorrow.” She explained to me “What is a coup attempt?” I asked innocently.

“It’s when the military tries to take over the government.” She explained. “Is it bad?” I asked. “Yes honey, the military might take over the government.” Said my mom kind of getting frustrated by the fact I was asking her stupid questions. I was only a little kid I didn’t know everything. I could see the panic and fear in my dad’s face, his whole face was red and he was sweating very heavily it looked like tears went down his face. I was confused; I still didn’t know what this ‘coup attempt thingie’ was. Panic spread in the room as everybody looked at each other thinking about the future of Spain. Everyone’s face was red and everybody was huddled like a team hoping for the best. I slowly started to understand what was going on but I wasn’t a 100% sure. Why did this have to happen to me? I was terrified my face was as red as ketchup; I thought I was going to die, as a little kid I didn’t know too well what could actually happen, all I was sure of was something bad was going on.

Afterword: On February 23rd 1981 there was a coup attempt a few days after the elections. The coup attempt took place in Madrid, in the Congress of deputies. General Tejero and his group of 200 soldiers led the coup attempt that lasted for a total of 18 hours. On the next morning, the coup attempt failed because out of the 200 soldiers who wanted to take over, some of them quit. On the day general Tejero took out a gun in Congress, shot in the air and ordered everyone to stay on the floor. The coup was organized in Valencia, it was setup by Lieutenant General Jaime Milan del Bosch. The next day school was cancelled because of this event and many people did not go to work because of the uncertainty about the outcome of this event. It was a night that all Spaniards of that time will never forget.
