WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM
Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) Pictorial space, according to Le Corbusier, is imagery and art that possesses a two dimensional, frontal view where depth is perceived through inference and viewer’s own perspective. He believes that the contrast you observe between the elements of the image and its rotation (whether it is in the foreground, middle, or background), provides the viewer with an idea of what the object or image looks like, in comparison to the actual thing, while allowing the viewer to have a subjective perspective of depth for the elements.
Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) Frontality and distance are the two properties that are attributable to the flatness of Le Corbusier’s paintings. He pits those two properties against the knowledge one can have of space through knowing what is in front/behind each other. In summary, he believes that the difference you observe between the 2D image and the perceived distance through noticing how the elements are laid out in front or behind each other in pictorial space, is equivalent to the difference between when one imagines something and the person’s actual experience/interaction with the real life version of the concept.

MARIO’S WORLD
First Mario World
Second Mario World
3
1ST MARIO’S WORLD
First projection of Mario world; with added characters and elements from the Nintendo world.
4
COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD
Combined Mario world with the following elements from the Nintendo world: flower, Luigi egg, power up box and pill, mystery box etc. The theme I decided on was Mario starting and ending at a flagpost, thus reaching the goal of getting Luigi’s egg, while avoiding obstacles along the way such as spikes and forestry. Scanned copy is slightly faded because it couldn’t capture some of the lines properly.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:
Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) Pictorial(perspectival) space is subjective, and work to represent something not necessarily in their “true” form. It is also linked to a certain point of view, and when something in a pictorial space is moved from its position the image becomes skewed. On the other hand, axonometric projections are measurable, true to the image’s forms, and does not have a vanishing point, therefore it extends into infinity. Axonometric projections do not change size and is an objective way of representation.
Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) Axonometric projections first arose in the engineering schools in the 18th/19th century, because it was used in the development of creating and charting the trajectories of missiles for the military. Due to the precise and measurable nature of axonometric drawings, it enhanced the geometric and mathematical elements of architectural representation, which would have been highly useful for technical processes such as creating machinery and weaponry.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD
For my Mario world, I attempted to join the two sections together to create a scene where Mario has an end goal to achieve. I think one of the things I could have improved on was fixing the linework, spending more time on creating three dimensionality and also to add in more elements in the middle sector.

Connecting and designing the middle ground of the two Mario worlds. The concept is based around Mario running towards a goal, and capturing Luigi’s egg while avoiding obstacles along the way.

Final draft in fineliner, ready to be edited and coloured on Illustrator. Some lines turned out faded when scanning therefore aren’t shown properly in the photograph.
Editing and colouring on Illustrator. I personally found it difficult to trace the objects because of line overlapping.
APPENDIX
Setting up of axonmetric drawings, first projection half completed.
The putting together of the two different Mario worlds. Here is the designing of the middle section of the two worlds.
