Sign Language Support (Google Hangout) by
Janko Roettgers of www.Gigaom.com
Deaf and hard of hearing users may soon get more use out of Google’s much-hyped new group video chat service Hangouts, thanks to a field test that looks at ways to add support for American Sign Language. Initial feedback from hearing-impaired users is enthusiastic. Google’s new Hangouts group video chat service has been a big hit with early adopters. Now the company is looking to make it more widely available without leaving anyone behind: Google is going to launch a field test with users fluent in American Sign Langauge (ASL) to make Hangouts more accessible to deaf and hearing impaired users. The field test is spearheaded by Google Technical Program Manager for Accessibility Engineering Naomi Black as well as
the Engineering Director Chee Chew, who kicked off the initiative with a post to Google Plus that explained his personal stake in the issue: “One area that I’m personally quite passionate about is facilitating communications and community for the deaf. My grandfather, aunt, and uncle were/are all deaf. While I’m very much a novice, I find ASL to be a beautiful expressive language. I hope that Hangouts can be awesome for the deaf (and hard of hearing) community as well as the hearing.” Video chat applications have long been used by hearing impaired users to communicate via sign language. Skype seems to be particularly popular with hard of hearing users, and some users have
turned to the service to learn and practice sign language. Google is asking Google Plus Hangouts users for feedback on sign language support.
Multiuser video chat would be the logical next step for hard of hearing users, but there are also some technical challenges associated with group video conferencing. Google Hangouts, for example, is optimized for audible communication, as it switches its focus between users based on their microphone input. The idea of this feature is to prominently display the video camera input of the user who is
3
A Home for the creative… …talent found along the way. | Issue 3
currently talking, which has the added benefit of giving users an incentive not to talk over each other. Gauging participation based on microphone input levels obviously doesn’t work for users who communicate via sign language, so Google is now looking for other cues. “We need an indicator for who has the floor,” explained Chee in his post, adding: “I’m sure there are subtle issues that I don’t know.” Making its video products accessible to deaf users isn’t just stewardship for Google; it could also help the company avoid future liabilities. Disability advocates have begun targeting online media offerings in recent weeks to force them to adopt closed captions for web video. Lawsuits against CNN and Netflix allege the companies discriminate against deaf and hard of hearing users by failing to provide captions for each and every video served online. Some of the points made by the plaintiffs in these cases could also be used to argue that a video chat service that focuses on audible speech discriminates against deaf users. Regardless of the motivation, early feedback from Google Plus users about the Hangouts field test is overwhelmingly supportive and even enthusiastic. In a comment on Chew’s post, one user summed up his feelings this way: “I actually cried with joy at reading this post and finding out that Google and the Google+ team actually care about all of their user base. Thank you very much for just thinking about us.” Picture of kids learning sign language courtesy of Flickr user daveynin.

These are the letters to the creatures that hid under my bed, crept in the corridors, and made no sound amongst the whisper of the wind, that others were blind to, and only I could see their glaring eyes. These monsters are not made of fantasy, they do not live in fiction, these beasts would breathe beside you, and they once lived among me and called themselves my family.

I will tell you this and I will only tell you this once you pretentious little C U (N-ext T-uesday), I'm sick of you and all your crap. You hate me? That's fine, I I don't care what you think of me or what BS you're spreading to the family. If you think I'm scared of you, you're wrong, there isn't a thing

you can do to me anymore and I savor that fact everyday. You can believe what you want about me and spread whatever lies you want or heck you can even spread my PAST screw ups, really, if that's what you have to do to feel whole, then by all means, do so. Just do so with the knowledge that you'll never be anything more than an uneducated, insufferable guttersnipe that can do nothing but screw a pizza delivery man, pop out kids and get really rare cancers in a redneck town that most people haven't heard of. While I, work with animals I love, am in a place to be something and have the knowledge that I am not completely sociopathic and not distorted in the head to the point of unrelenting, unnecessary resentment like yourself. If you think the fact that you and our father hate me is news, I accepted that long ago. I also accepted the fact that the few screw ups that I actually made will be your cannon fodder for the rest of my days and no matter how much I could possibly beg for forgiveness it wouldn't make your treatment or thoughts of me any better. I won’t torture myself for your good graces, you aren't worth it. I will never be what Bob wanted me to be and am I glad, because if I became what he
wanted me to be, well, let's face it, I'd be you, and nobody wants to be you. I also won't bow down and be your slave because you're useless and just not worth it, so why give you even a moment of my time? Even writing this about you bothers me because, essentially, I'm wasting precious minutes. Also, so you can't bad mouth me to the rest of the family (although you'll probably just skip over this part while telling them what I said) I'm talking about YOU, you low life over developed sex stain. I am speaking of no one else. Go on and hate me, stew in the anger that you're going to have bubble up from your core after reading this, go on and get even more enraged by the fact that there isn't a thing you can do to
me. I'd really tell you to go F - off, eat crap, die and go to the deepest recesses of Hades, but
that would be too good for you... Wouldn't it? *THIS LETTER WAS EDITED TO BE FAMILY FRIENDLY. THE ORIGINAL VERSION IS FOR ADULTS ONLY. ARTISTIC TALENT
DAVID GERMAN Concept Rhythm is the evolution of my artistic vision, the combination of my love for art and music. I usually listen to music when I design, because it motivates and inspires me. Music has been one of the strongest influences to my artistic expressions and has helped me understand how to symbolize beauty, rhythm, and movement. So you might wonder, how could music influence artistic expressions of a different medium? Sometimes I’ll listen to music that may go hand and hand to a piece I’m designing, but ordinarily I just listen to something based on my mood at the time. Jazz, Blues, Hip-Hop and just good soulful oldies like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Muddy Waters, Gnarls Barkley, Outkast, Miles Davis, Roots, and Nas – is usually the first thing I go to. For me, these artists and their music form a core of all the things I hold closest to my art. Expression, freedom and an ability to get lost in whatever you’re doing. Sometimes I get carried away and start dancing while I’m painting which can make for some interesting artwork to say the least. Art & music are like breathing, I could not live without either… Just as I must breathe to live, I must have both of these for my spiritual survival.
CONCEPT RHYTHM by
DAVID GERMAN
Music and Design are two faces of the same coin for me. An image is something you see, and music is something you hear; though I use both to communicate a message. Just as I appreciate and create images, I listen to and compose music. Nevertheless, I see music as my hobby and art as my passion, though I do enjoy both very much. I also tend to be critical on both. When I see a design/image, I sort of critique it in my mind. The same goes for music, and you’d be shocked to see that design principles apply to music as well. Both really are one and the same thing, so it’s no surprise that so many visual artist get involved in music, or at least feel a natural gravitation to it.”

THE BACHELOR FARMERS by
BRENDA SORRELS ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I grew up in Fargo, N.D., then headed east to Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y. Most of my life has been spent living in Connecticut, but in 2000 I married my college boyfriend, Barry Sorrels, and moved to Dallas where two lovely step-daughters and a new life awaited me. Although I’ve been writing for years, it was returning north for summers, during those lazy country afternoons, when I began to get serious. After numerous workshops and writing courses, I developed a series of short stories, ironically, all set in the Midwest. Working with my college roommate, Margaret Doud, as my editor, in time I expanded one of these stories into The Bachelor Farmers - my first novel. I haven’t stopped since, and I’m happy to report that I’m well on my way with another book. The Way Back ‘Round, will be coming out in the fall of 2012. I hope you’ll pick up a copy of my latest book and let me know what you think. I’m looking forward to getting to know all of you a little better. http://www.brendasorrels.com/about.htm
Set in northern Minnesota in the winter of 1919, THE BACHELOR FARMERS tells a story of two Norwegian brothers who learn the meaning of love from a most unlikely source. Hans and Jon, the youngest of four immigrant brothers, have just inherited land from their recently deceased father and set out to develop it, thus perpetuating the family dream of success in America. When Jon learns that the husband of Mahal, a beautiful half-breed, Ojibwa woman, has been injured on their property and cannot work, he hires her to be their personal cook. Under the eye of his disapproving brother, Jon finds himself falling in love, but when a terrible blizzard blows into town without warning, the three of them must deal with the consequences and make decisions that will ultimately reshape their lives in profound and unimaginable ways.
THE BACHELOR FARMERS takes us into a world where true meaning and healing are found in the complexity of human relationships and in the choices that are made in the face of adversity. Read an excerpt from my book http://www.brendasorrels.com/picts/BachelorFarme rExcerpt.pdf

A SECERT WITNESS CAROL BYLER ____________________________
by
In 1969 Municipal Judge Robert
Steele of Euclid, Ohio conspired with a pimp to hire a hit man to murder his wife. For eight years Carol J. Kilbane-Byler was engulfed in this dark, tempestuous conspiracy. She knew the details of the murder and was labeled a “central figure” in the murder trial. Torn between keeping this buried secret or revealing the truth about her common-law husband’s involvement plotting the murder, when called by the prosecutor to
testify against the men on trial, she refused. Charged with contempt of court and immediately removed from the courtroom she spent six months in jail. Following her release, she remained terrified fearing for her life.
acceptance she has found. Her incredible story will encourage and inspire women of all ages that they too can be transformed from to victim to victor.
With her secret knowledge of the murder Carol was unable to see any way out of the web entangling her. Using the journal she kept throughout this terrifying period of her life, she recounts in vivid detail, the highs and lows of her journey out of her unhealthy,
abusive relationship into an entirely different life filled with authentic love, joy and acceptance. This account of Carol’s transformation has inspired people for more than 30 years. Just released by Gazelle Press, her true story is told in detail in her book, Secret Witness (The Steele Murder Case ) Carol’s vivid description of her abuse, fear, prostitution and even murder, will encourage all who read it. Stories of abuse abound in the news, movies and on TV. Most don’t have happy endings. Carol’s does. In the midst of sordid chaos, she found hope through a lifechanging relationship with God. She demonstrates how God can transform a life no matter how horrific it gets. Her desire is that those who read her book will discover the true love and

OWLET REVIEW Owlet surprised me! It wasn’t a fast paced, adrenaline seeking junkie type book but a story of a girl who thinks she’s powerless when in reality she is the exact opposite. Loved it and can’t wait for book two!!
Carol’s story is very different. A series of personal choices created a “perfect storm”. Carol’s story is about choices we make in life, accountability for them, and reconciliation of them. Carol as a young teen was induced to choose a life of prostitution – a life which she believed would bring her love, freedom, excitement, wealth, and independence. She was wrong. What she got was hopelessness, depression, self-loathing, and entangled in a web which she could not leave – even when she wanted to. A powerful man, Judge Steele, of Euclid, Ohio conspired with a local pimp to hire a hit man to murder his wife in 1969. Carol was living with one of the killers and faced being a witness at the murder trial. Secret Witness is a must read for every teen discontented with parents, appropriate limits, and peer choices. Her book is inspiring to every adult who lives and believes that faith reveals a journey from victim to VICTOR. blog: http://caroljbylerministry.com website: http://caroljkilbane-byler.com

LISA GORDON AUTHOR OF A SEALED FATE
When I left school I didn't have my career all marked out in the route planner, I didn't have a life compass - all I had was an abiding belief that things would work out as they were meant to. I studied law, then economics, then I took a serious left turn and became an astrologer, but nothing really clicked for me. I bumbled along with this belief as my comfort blanket until one day crisis hit - I turned 30! Suddenly I realized that I was nowhere, my belief that all would work out magically without any major planning on my
behalf had lead me a merry dance and while all my friends seemed to have it all sussed career wise and family wise, my life was a basket case. It really made me question my beliefs and wonder if there really IS a plan or a destiny for us all, or whether it's all down to free choice and our own strategic planning.
THE C I N SERIES— HOLLYWOOD MICHAEL… Steven Strait photo from IMBD.com
This question about whether fate or freewill govern our life became the guiding theme of my novel, A Sealed Fate. The strange twists and turns of my own life and my own constant querying over whether I had a destiny or a fate inspired the theme of my novel. It's important to realise that life is a great mystery and that is part of the fun; you never know when things are going to change and when the best part of your life is going to begin. Writing a book was something I never expected to try and yet it is now my greatest love and my greatest achievement. I have written two more books which I hope to publish in the near future and as all authors know writing is a huge adventure which never ends.
Michael is a cocky, unruly character who original was supposed to provide comic relief. But as my story progressed, he became more than just a laugh. He oozes sex appeal, has an obvious bad side that we’ve yet to see, and even when he’s being a jerk, those eyes and muscles change things… Steven Strait, if ever a movie is done on the C I N Series would you please play the hottest guy on C I N’s campus? www.cinseries.com

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE GROUP by

I originally created Facebook's American Sign Language group (www.facebook.com/USASignL anguage) when I noticed Facebook didn't have a single ASL page. I created this as a place that is dedicated to bringing up to date news on everything within the ASL community. From deaf events, to practice tips, videos and other fun things. Or just a place to meet and practice with fellow signers! ASL is the dominant sign language of the Deaf community in the United States, in the Englishspeaking parts of Canada, and
in parts of Mexico. With an estimated 2 million in the U.S. alone.

WHO IS REEL? by
CODY ALAN REEL IN THE SNOW
READ AN EXCERPT BELOW
CODY ALAN REEL
I'm just your typical smart, socially anxious, bipolar 20 year old. I have many passions, the main of which are sports, but I also love to teach math and learn mathematics. I'm a dark fiction writer: that means I include elements of sex, blood, gore and violence. My writing also includes elements of the supernatural, realism, satire and human
psychology, including getting inside of the heads of people that commit various crimes, critiques of societies that I observe, how societies define crime, and how they handle crime. Death, destruction, and man's desire for power are some of my various themes.

HERE’S AN EXCERPT FROM REEL: Known to the locals as the "Manic Maniac", Delanger had stolen several knives from the local butcher's shop while it was closed. No one in Manic had ever thought of locking up after closing because everyone was so close, no one would ever dream of stealing from anyone else. Manic had a sheriff, but he wasn't available all hours of the day. Sometimes the sheriff would lock the doors of the department, plop his legs on his desk, and rest until his hours were finished for the day, collecting the same paycheck no matter what he happened to accomplish. During the robbery, Delanger had an urge to practice cutting up some of the pigs that were hanging in the freezer. He sliced them from neck to anus and didn't feel a thing. He saw how the pig's blood had coated the knife. He ripped open the pig's skin and placed his hand inside the pig's body and moved it around slowly in the warm blood. The warm blood felt good in the cold freezer. He didn't feel anything otherwise, such as he shouldn't be in here, or he could get caught. He really didn't feel anything at all in his brain besides curiosity and the physical viscosity of the blood. As a kid, Jack remembered loving to torture the neighborhood's cats where he grew up. He couldn't recall the name of the town, or the name of the school or how to get there, but he could give detailed descriptions of the colors and names of the cats whose fur he singed or limbs he had severed with his own teeth. Jack had learned that meat came from animals and thought that catching his own meat would taste better than eating cafeteria food,
which as far as he could remember was the only meal he had to eat every day. As far back as Jack could remember, he couldn't remember feeling anything besides things he wasn't supposed to feel. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008N 3IE5O “Like” Reel’s Facebook page!
MY WORLD I didn’t grow up like most people. While classmates lined up in front of the bathroom mirror, I walked past them, day dreaming. When we were told to write a story, I cheered. Performances impressed me, Chorus wasn’t frightening, neither was band, art or drama. Bizarre people and things were my norm. People with funny socks? Awesome! Singing songs to poor male victims I thought were cute? A thing my friends and I did. Skipping through the schoolyard, pretending to be cheerleaders for the soccer players? (I was
I DIDN’T GROW UP IN THE REAL WORLD by
CHRISTINA LEIGH PRITCHARD the S in T I G E R S!) As time goes on few of your friends still want to play these silly games. Acting, singing, learning an instrument, drawing become things that talented persons do… As you age, groups form. Imagination is replaced with reality. Each group seems to be less and less involved with each other. But, I didn’t work in the real world. I spent my Saturdays sitting in the lounge at Jan McArt’s Royal Palm Dinner Theater. My normal, was watching actors stretch, sing, practice their lines, and dress for their next act My first ideals were set early. I went home, read books, entered other worlds, went to the theater with my mother (she was a bar maid and a waitress) watched with my very eyes new shows, new worlds, always something new and exciting…

I had to try everything! Acting, singing, dancing, art, writing, the clarinet; I didn’t fit in any group. Why would I want to be in just one? There were so many things to try. (Except basketball; I broke more pairs of glasses in that game. Sigh.) When I was old enough, I worked at the theater. High school can be tough on the imaginative. I never noticed. Work was another world far from reality. Sure I worked hard. But, being in that sort of environment taught me to ‘beat to my own drum’, be my own person, and not judge others for their creativity… So, what I’m trying to say is, thank you Jan McArt, for giving me a place to flourish! Thank you for not making me grow up in the real world. Because of you, I never knew there was anything wrong with dreaming.
CASTING CALL WINNERS
Present Thank you to those who participated in the Casting Call for new characters in the C I N Series! I’ve drawn out of a bowl 6 names. Each winner will have their own short story in the Temptation Series (a part of the C I N series) and will continue throughout the remaining 5 C I N books!
WRECK IT RALPH
UPCOMING SHOW BOOK NOW! CRYSTAL WILL APPEAR…
Casting Call winner Maddy will have her character Crystal appear in Ally’s Secret as a LEAD! Congrats!
C I N SERIES
For playlists, excerpts and book trailers be sure to check out www.cinseries.com
Sam and Maddy will be our groupies from the past. Sam wants to be a lone ranger who isn’t afraid of anything; her character should have a special power—fire. (This will be interesting!) Sam says her character needs to be a bit wicked and have “plans” for her so called friends…
Jake and Savannah are cousins and they live in Mississippi. I foresee some seriously new plots brewing! (We’ll learn more about Jake later!)
Maddy is quite the challenge! She’d like to be afraid of vampires, have a pet dragon and if I decided to make her character, Crystal, bad, that’s “cool” too.
ALLY’S SECRET WWW.CINSERIES.COM I’ve decided that I’ll include SAM’s character in book 3, Ally’s Secret! Congrats Sam!!
Savannah and Jake will be two characters based on the present…today at C I N. In real life, Savannah is a cheerleader and she participates in various activities. She’d love her character to be named Ravenna Frost and have a fun and quirky personality. (I can do that!) Maybe a bit of a klutz? That would be a fun write.

This movie was awesome! The creators designed a cool concept with the video games and I love how I was actually surprised at its ending. This is not a normal thing for me. Usually I can figure out any movie. Must Watch!
family! You’d be surprised at how different two full blooded sisters look. Sam is dark haired with dark eyes and Maddy is the opposite with blonde hair and blue eyes.
Maddy and Sam are fleshly sisters whose mother just recently remarried! Congrats to your
Future Kae and Anna Sulles will be our groupies of the future.

Kae was adopted in real life and is part Asian, part Vietnamese. I can’t wait to create her character. She’d like to be a nice person (so that will be a challenge since most of my characters have a bit of a dark side to them) who is shy and afraid to talk to that crush of hers… Kae will be the toughest for me yet! Anna Sulles is going to be a surprise. She’s an avid reader from what I can tell and appears to love blogging.
Congratulations again to all my winners and I look forward to creating your stories! A post from Christina Leigh Pritchard, author of the C I N Series.
A MUST READ! A book Review on Amazon for Donnette Smith’s novel Lady Gabriella…

In the late 1700's a King fell in love with a mistress named Gabriella, he gave her a beautiful stone encased inside of a locket. When the king discovered Gabriella sleeping with another man he had both of them killed for the betrayal. The stone is said to reach into its owners heart, bringing to life their deepest desire. Nicole Valentine lived a life of abuse from her mother and neglect from her father. Her mother found one reason to kick her out of the house for good and she did just that, convincing Nicole's father that she had betrayed him. Nicole was left to find her own way in the world at such a young age, who knew she would turn out to be a successful journalist. Returning home after eleven years seemed foreign to Nicole; but she had to be there for the reading of her father's will. Her father died of prostate cancer, so it seemed fitting that he left his entire fortune to The Fight For Cancer Foundation. That infuriated her mother, but not nearly as much as what was left to Nicole. Detective Bay Dalton was paid to seduce Nicole and find the whereabouts of the locket, it was sleeping with another man he had both of them killed for the betrayal. never in the deal to fall in love with her. Investigating this case seemed to be full of secrets; Nicole's birth mother was not the evil mother she lived with all those years, and her birth father was actually her uncle. Everyone wanted to get their hands on the Lady Gabriella, no matter whose life was at stake. When Bay was shot, Nicole only thought the worst. There was no way the man she loved would come walking to her ever again. Is there a happy ending to this story? When all the secrets start to leak out it all begins to make sense to Nicole. Her whole life had been a lie. Ms. Smith's novel Lady Gabriella was a joy to read, it was full of mystery, romance, and a couple of unexpected twists. It seemed odd for me to believe that the Detective could behave the way he did toward a client in the beginning. He should have tried to earn her trust first instead of trying to seduce her the very moment they met. I recommend this novel to anyone looking for a good read. 4 Hearts is the perfect rating for Lady Gabriella.

CHICKEN KILLER
EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 5—HURRY ON HOME “Is Aunt Millie paying you to take me to this party?” I blurted. Michael stared numbly. “No, I just thought I’d be nice.” “Sorry,” I said. “I just thought after how mad I made you yesterday that—” “Lisa, please. You don’t faze me. I’d like to think I was a bit more mature than that.” He poked me in the cheek. “I will race you.” “Hey, no fair!” I grabbed his jacket and ran along with him. I turned around to check on Pig. He stood at the entrance of the woods. I stopped. “Bipolar, come on, boy!” Michael leaned over my shoulder. “You named him Bipolar? Well, if that isn’t just the perfect name for him. He will be right there waiting for you to get back, don’t worry. He’s not a people dog. It’s a miracle that he
follows you around. Actually, it’s weird and disturbing.” “Leave my dog alone.” I shoved him. He gently pushed me back. “Lisa Brown, I think you just might be all right. I didn’t really like you at first but when you dared to make faces at Ally, well, let’s just say you practically stole my heart.” “You better hurry home.” I turned around to see where the voice came from. It wasn’t Michael’s. I searched the woods. It almost sounded like Alex but he was still on his purple porch swing. “Did you hear that?” “Hear what?” “Someone said that we should get home. You didn’t hear them?” I scratched my head and examined the treetops. My heart fluttered. Was someone playing a practical joke on us?
Aunt Millie stood a few feet away. “Alex, honey, could you fetch me one of the chickens, please? I want to fix a nice dinner for Lisa.” Alex nodded his head and snatched a passing chicken by her neck. She clucked and scared all the other hens. They scurried around and hid inside their coop. Alex looked up at me. His eyes were blank. “I better go get the eggs,” I mumbled, frozen. Alex took out an axe, stretched the hen’s neck across a tree stump and dropped his weapon. The headless body ran around. That poor chicken. She didn’t even see it coming. Alex didn’t even flinch WWW.CINSERIES.COM

“Pig, where are you?” I clapped my hands and the Boston terrier came to my side. “Let’s go, Lisa. I think these woods have you spooked. I promise they’re not haunted.” He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and dragged me forwards. The sky grew dark and thunder rumbled. Pig barked and stood on his hind legs. I giggled. He looked almost as if he were a prancing show dog. “Who would’ve known, Pig can do tricks!” Michael laughed, too. “What did you do to him? He’s a different dog. I have been coming here since forever and
that dog has never been so friendly.” “How old is he? He doesn’t look old.” I knelt down and searched his face for any gray hairs. There weren’t any. “He looks almost like a teenager.” “You better hurry home.” There it was again! The voice rang in my ears and I winced with pain. The same pain I’d felt when Alex touched me. He was still on his porch, right? I turned to double check. Yes, he was still swinging; staring intently at Michael and me. Suddenly, lightning flashed in the sky. I grabbed Michael’s arm and Pig barked. It shot through
the sky like a bullet of fire. It was pink in color. Rain pelted me in the forehead. It began to pour. “We better go back to Millie’s house until this rain stops.” Michael guided me out of the woods. He pulled the hood of his ski jacket over my head so that I did not get drenched. When we got inside Millie’s house I stripped out of my two wet jackets and stood in front of her small portable heater, shivering. On one of the bistro chairs was the jacket Alex tossed at me in the henhouse. I reached over and snatched it.
“Teri, get up. We need you.” Andy shook her. “I’m awake. Who could sleep with all that noise?” “Up, up.” Andy grabbed her underneath the shoulders. “Something is going to attack us. I’m not in the mood to die right now.” “And I suppose you expect me to save you?” “Kinda, yeah.” “I’m too weak.” She collapsed against the wall. “I’ve tried to emit acid so that maybe I could burn this oil off my skin but I can’t seem to do it. I tried—” Andy covered her mouth with his hand. “Shh.” Tahmi and Jerry stuck close. He squinted. Was there really something watching them? “I’ll relight the fire.”
He tossed in dried branches, watching the flames light the cave. Jerry couldn’t believe his eyes. Tahmi took his hand, trembling. “Please tell me this is just a nightmare.” “This is just a nightmare,” Jerry said. “Not funny.” She backed into him. Her body nestled with his. They looked at the cave walls. Thousands of black shadows stared at them with glowing green eyes. “Run,” Jerry whispered. He took her hand and dragged her towards the opening of the cave.
LARK’S END A SHORT EXCERPT “TRUSTY!” They turned abruptly. Tahmi scrambled to her feet. “Where’s the firelight? Someone’s blown it out.” Jerry sat, rubbing his eyes. “It probably went out on its own.” “No.” She panicked. “I felt it grow cold instantly. Someone is out there.” Andy and Teri woke. “What do you mean?” Andy mumbled, still half asleep. “Are you sure you’re not just paranoid? You can get a little wacky when you’re tired.” “No,” Tahmi stood now, “Something is watching us. I can feel it.” Sandy and Trusty circled, trying to catch every shadow that danced about. Was one of them a threat?

True Cause of Salem Witch Hunts By Christina Leigh Pritchard
Ropes tied around the necks of women, gentlemen pressed with heavy stones until dead… These headlines were common once; but why? In 1692 Salem, Massachusetts was in an uproar. Eight young girls in their district were having fits and hallucinating. What was the cause of these hallucinations and fits? The girls began accusing men and women of trying to possess them. Judges ruled on assumption; facts were not necessary only outward gestures of sorcery. Why did an entire village of people turn on each other in all out paranoia/mania? Some claim it was politics while others suggest another reason altogether. In 1676 Denis Dodart wrote to The French Royal Academy of Sciences. In his letter he mentioned Ergot. Ergot comes from Rye. What did the eight girls who claimed to be possessed by witches eat and grow as a staple in their homes and for business? Rye. Their fits, hallucinations and paranoia resembled lysergic acid diethylamide or as we know it: LSD. Many scientists today claim that the girls simply ate bad rye; came down with ergot poisoning— which induced them just like a drug. When the accusations arose, some think the adults in power took advantage of the situation—reaping monetary benefits (land and properties) from all those executed. Today, ergot is used in the following drugs: (1) methylergometrine which helps constrict blood vessels in pregnant women and also it is used with those having abortions and (2) ergotamine; helps those with acute migraines, has been known to induce childbirth and aids in the prevention of postpartum hemorrhages. Overdoses of these two drugs have similar effects on its patients as those of the Salem youth infected with ergotism. Information found in the following resources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergot http://www.hbci.com/~wenonah/history/ergot.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergotism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylergometrine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergotamine
