GOING FOR GOLD

ON 24TH OCTOBER, THE YACHT HARBOUR ASSOCIATION CAME TO RACECOURSE MARINA, WINDSOR TO CARRY OUT THEIR ANNUAL ‘GOLD ANCHOR ASSESSMENT’. Gold Anchors are awarded by The TYHA and are designed to encourage high standards in the facilities, operation, and customer service offered by marinas around the world. The scheme helps boat owners understand the quality of the marina, and therefore aids their decision on where to moor their boat. It is based upon the belief that the marina industry needs a customer centric focus for marina businesses and recreational boating to grow and prosper. The RYA (Royal Yachting Association) endorse the scheme, and it is often likened to the boating equivalent of a hotel star rating.

The awards range from 1-5 Gold Anchors, with any award representing a sure sign of a quality marina. The number of Gold Anchors increases depending on the facilities available and the standard of service given to customers. The process also includes ‘mystery shopping’, and a berth-holder questionnaire, so results are as authentic as possible.

The scheme is based on self-assessment and site assessment of specific items across six evaluation categories which are:

Thank you for your continued support.

• Ambience • Planning, policies, and procedures • Customer service • Environmental • On water facilities and infrastructure • On shore facilities and infrastructure

04 | www.tingdeneboating.com

We are delighted to announce that Racecourse Marina

Windsor has, yet again, been awarded the 5 Gold Anchor Award, and will continue to serve berth holders and visitors to the highest possible standard, as always.

GUY GIRLING – BOAT SALES EXECUTIVE, THAMES & KENNET MARINA

We are shedding the light on the people behind Tingdene Marinas and Boat Sales... FAVOURITE QUOTE? “Don’t leave for tomorrow what can be completed today!”

FAVOURITE BOOK? ‘The Retallick Saga’ by E.V. Thompson

FAVOURITE FILM? Pirates of the Caribbean

ANY PETS? None sadly at present as too many hours spent working!

WHAT ARE THE VALUES THAT DRIVE YOU? Seeing clients happily afloat and working on the next sale.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT WORKING FOR TINGDENE MARINAS? Despite the company’s size, Tingdene work as a family business, with everyone from every position being included in decisions and ideas. I enjoy the broad spectrum of locations the marinas and boat sales teams span and all of the benefits that come with selling boats within that set up. I like teaching younger members of the team, who are sometimes fresh to the industry, but passionate to learn from those of us who have decades of experience to share. 06 | www.tingdeneboating.com

Meet the Team

“Every day is different and so long as you are prepared to be flexible, it is more of a lifestyle rather than a job.”

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF WORKING IN THE MARINE INDUSTRY TO YOU?

WHAT IS YOUR HIDDEN TALENT?

The marine industry doesn’t feel like ‘work’. Every day is different and so long as you are prepared to be flexible, it is more of a lifestyle rather than a job. Having worked on the River Thames for over 40 years, I still look forward to every day and the new challenges that come with boat sales and marina life. It is also important to me to influence and witness the progression of the younger generation of boat sales executives and see them get involved in all aspects of the industry and lifestyle.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN?

Helming boats in any conditions!

Always treat a new day as a new challenge.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU ARE NOT WORKING? Projects at home, especially in the garden. I most recently designed and built an outdoor ‘boat bar’ and outdoor kitchen. I also enjoy taking long walks to explore the countryside. During my most recent holiday, I took the time to visit spots in London where you wouldn’t usually go, and it was fascinating.

SOUTHAMPTON

BOAT SHOW 2023 REVIEW TINGDENE MARINAS & BOAT SALES HAD ANOTHER FANTASTIC YEAR AT SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW, WHERE WE WERE GIVEN THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO COME TOGETHER WITH 90,000 OF OUR FELLOW LIKE-MINDED BOATERS AND OVER 700 INDUSTRY EXHIBITORS. The sun shone bright across the marina during the first weekend, bouncing off the array of 650 stunning vessels perfectly, and the atmosphere filled with the same buzz of excitement each year brings. Although the weather took a turn in the middle of the show, spirits didn’t, and we were delighted with how many customers refused to let the weather stop them. We all know what the reality of boating weather in Britain can be like, after all!

SHOW FEATURES The show is renowned for being a great day out for any age or level of boating skill. Challenges and activities the whole family can take part in, exciting expert talks and demonstrations, product launches and inspirational stories from the water, and competitions galore filled visitors’ days with ease. This year, the live music in the brand new Shipyard was particularly brilliant, with all types of genres and even world famous DJ Judge Jules spinning the decks! 08 | www.tingdeneboating.com

Live sport, bars with plenty of choice, and incredible food choices set the show’s celebratory atmosphere, all while overlooking the beautiful Solent. Down on the water, the amazing line up of new boats of all shapes and sizes did all the talking.

Southampton Boat Show Southampton Boat Show 2023

We had a great response to our boats on show from Viking Cruisers, Maxima, Ranieri, Delphia, Sealine, and RYCK.

A myriad of perfectly polished motor yachts, sailing boats, tenders and speed boats lined the pontoons triumphantly, offering something to explore at every turn. It was a boater’s dream, to say the least.

NEW FOR 2023 Exploring the new features of the show was a highlight this year. ‘The Beach Haven & Watersports Lake’, brought to you by our friends Haven Knox-Johnston, a new addition for 2023, where action-seekers were given the opportunity to try their hand at an array of water sports. And for those looking for a more relaxed day, a sandy beach chill out area was the perfect place to sit and take in the surroundings.

We relished in the sights and sounds of the pockets of celebration from every corner, which included Delphia’s champagne toast to mindful cruising on opening day, to celebrate and support sustainable and environmentallyfriendly cruising around the UK’s inland waterways. We met key industry experts, press, and customers to explore what is the future for sustainability in boating, a topic that we are incredibly excited to begin venturing further into. (Read more about Delphia on pages 18-23). We also teamed up with Haven Knox-Johnson to offer a competition to win a Sandbanks style iSUP paddleboard package too, worth over £350, with lucky winner Kate Davies taking the prize! Walton Marina

THE HISTORY OF

WALTON MARINA Nestled on the picturesque banks of Walton-on-Thames in Surrey, Rosewell’s Boathouse, more commonly known as Walton Marina, stands as a testament to the enduring allure of waterways and the rich history they carry. This marina has witnessed countless tales of adventure, leisure, and the transformation of the river from a bustling industrial artery to a recreational haven. In this article, we will embark on a journey through time to explore the fascinating history of Walton Marina.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN The history of Walton-on-Thames can be traced back to the 18th century when the river was a vital transport route for goods flowing between London and other parts of the country. This area, known for its fertile soil and agricultural produce, was strategically important for transportation. The construction of Sunbury locks and weir in the late 18th century marked the beginning of the transformation of this part of the Thames into an easily navigable waterway. During this time, the construction of Rosewell’s Boathouse’ began, aptly named after the owners the Rosewell family who 10 | www.tingdeneboating.com

were specialists in the building of punts and skiffs. Nestled between the river and natural back water which would later form the marina, the large wooden Thames-side boathouse boasted a full-length balcony from its upper mezzanine floor, ample ground for space for boat building and direct access slips into the river.

This marina has witnessed countless tales of adventure, leisure, and the transformation of the river from a bustling industrial artery to a recreational haven.

Walton Marina

Rosewell’s Boathouse, Walton on Thames, 1896

THE RISE OF LEISURE BOATING As the 19th century unfolded, the Industrial Revolution began to wane, and a new era of leisure and recreation emerged. The allure of the Thames as a getaway destination grew, and the region witnessed an influx of pleasure boats and rowing clubs. Rosewell’s Boathouse, which was now renamed Eastwoods, appealed to this social adaption, particularly because of its scenic beauty and convenient location. It began to cater to the recreational needs of the rapidly growing boating demand, and come the early 1950s, river side motorboat moorings were introduced. As boating popularity increased, it was clear there was a need for additional moorings. In the 1960’s, the Cook family took over the boathouse, and immediately got to work piling and dredging to create 150 new water berths. This was when Walton Marina was born, and the development would become one the first marinas on the River Thames to utilise the unused natural backwater behind.

Walton Marina

ADAPTING TO THE TIMES The latter half of the 20th century saw continued modernisation at Walton Marina. Technological advancements transformed the boating experience, and the marina upgraded its infrastructure, offering improved moorings, boat maintenance services, and amenities to cater to a diverse clientele of boating enthusiasts. Tingdene Marinas took over the site in 2008, and since then Walton Marina has transformed into much more than a boating facility; it serves as a vibrant community hub, hosting events such as open days, boat sales weekends, and social gatherings for like-minded Thames boaters, and is also home to many marine-based businesses. It has become a place where residents and visitors alike can take part in exciting water-based activities, or simply sit back and take in the rare but much needed tranquil atmosphere, all while nestled into the convenience of city life. Walton Marina’s history is a testament to the dynamic interplay of the industry, leisure, and community generously scattered along the banks of the River Thames. From its humble origins as a traditional boathouse to its current status as a thriving marina and community hub, the marina has adapted to suit the times, while retaining its connection to the river’s rich heritage. As we continue to navigate through the currents of time, Walton Marina remains a cherished part of the region’s history and a symbol of the enduring allure of life on the water.

“Following the successful launch of our boat for our first season at Racecourse Marina Windsor, we were able to spend our first few days on board in June. This happened to coincide with the peak of the dragonfly and damselfly season and, consequently, the stern of our boat was constantly being used as a resting spot for these beautiful, but very active, creatures. With some patience, I managed to get this close up of a female blue damselfly, obligingly perching quite still. We usually see the head of a damselfly as about the size of a pin head, but this is what they look like magnified several times. Fairly scary! We look forward to more encounters with nature on the Thames.” - Marion Ramsay, ‘Lady Vigil’, (Thames and Kennet Marina). www.tingdeneboating.com | 15

BERTH HOLDER STORIES

OUR BOATING JOURNEY “Our boating adventure began in July 2018 when we sauntered passed Tingdene Walton Marina one afternoon and ended up buying a Freeman 22 (built in 1965). My husband and I had been retired for several years and were always keen to try something new, so with lots of help and advice from the friendly Tingdene staff, we embarked on our river experience and all things boat-y. Our enthusiasm extended to going to the Penton Hook Marina boat show in April 2019 where we ended up purchasing a Viking 215. We were not unhappy with our Freeman, but the Viking 215 was very nice and in such lovely condition. However, nice as it was, within a couple of months we realised it was a bit small for our overnight trips upriver, so in June 2019 along came a Viking 24, a nice boat and with cut outs! We very happily cruised up and down the river but thought we would have a little look at a Viking 275 up for sale at Thames & Kennet Marina. As before, we chatted to the staff at Walton Marina and discussed with boating friends who had a Viking 275, and soon realised this was the boat for us. Finally our last boat - it would be our fourth in 5 years after all! So we duly purchased it in December 2020.

I think this can be classified as a boating adventure for us, but wait, it doesn’t stop here… we’re now looking at a narrow boat because not only can you go up and down the Thames, but you can go through 2000 miles of canals and waterways which you can’t do with a cabin cruiser. This time we’re not rushing into anything, instead we hired a narrow boat for a few days to see what it was like, and although we enjoyed it, the experience was very, very different from our Viking 275. I could write a list of pros and cons for both types of boat, so at the moment the jury’s out on what we will do. Over the years since we purchased our first boat we have met so many lovely and friendly people on the river, learnt a lot about boating, and had a lot of fun! (As well as the odd calamity, which we won’t speak of!) - Val & Martin Mellor, (Walton Marina).

WE’D LOVE TO SEE YOUR PHOTOS AND STORIES! Feel free to email marketing@tingdene.net any time with any inspiring photos or stories for your chance to feature in future issues of ‘Tingdene Life’ magazine.

THE SEVERN The River Severn, winding its way through the picturesque landscapes of England and Wales, has long been a popular destination for boaters. Its timeless allure draws enthusiasts from near and far, making it a hub for maritime activities. Here, we will explore the reasons why the River Severn is so cherished by boaters, spanning from its natural beauty to its rich history and diverse recreational opportunities.

NO. 1 NATURAL BEAUTY

First and foremost, the River Severn’s natural beauty is a prime attraction for boaters. Its shores are lined with historic towns and villages, many of which boast well-preserved architecture and tales of yesteryears. Boaters can explore the heritage of the river as they pass by medieval bridges, historic market towns, and even the remnants of ancient fortifications. This sense of history adds an extra dimension to the boating experience, blending adventure with a touch of nostalgia.

NO. 3 THE SEVERN BORE

The Severn Bore 24 | www.tingdeneboating.com

One of the more unique features of the River Severn is the Severn Bore, a natural phenomenon that occurs when the incoming tide forces a surge of water upstream. This bore can be huge, reaching heights of several feet and propelling skilled surfers along its crest. The excitement of riding the Severn Bore has attracted adventurous surfers from all over the world for years.

Waterside living

LIFE BY

THE WATERSIDE

England and Wales are home to 2,000 miles of waterways and endless gorgeous riverside locations that you could call home. We have collated the most-loved aspects of living life with water as your garden, neighbour or landscape, so you can see just how fulfilling it can be...

STUNNING SCENERY Life on the waterfront almost guarantees breathtaking views. Whether the tranquil ripples of a lake or the majestic flow of a river, you’ll have a diverse, picturesque backdrop every day.

RECREATION AND LEISURE

COMMUNITY

Waterfront living offers immediate access to a wide range of recreational activities. Boating, swimming, fishing, and water sports become part of everyday life, encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle for the whole family.

Waterfront communities often have a strong sense of camaraderie, particularly in boating. Residents and berth holders share a common love for the water and engage in activities such as marina parties, fishing tournaments, or simply gathering by the water to socialise.

WILDLIFE AND NATURE

AFFORDABILITY & INVESTMENT

Birds, fish, and other aquatic creatures can be observed in their natural habitat, enhancing the connection with nature. Living waterside also provides opportunities for gardening and landscaping in a unique environment.

Living on a boat can be an affordable option. As house prices and rentals across the country continue to rocket, there is a huge rise in people turning to boats as an affordable home option. You even have the option to rent out part or all of your home or boat, enabling living costs to diminish further.

Waterside living

Birds, fish, and other aquatic creatures can be observed in their natural habitat, bringing you closer to nature more than ever before.

CLIMATE MODERATION Water bodies have a moderating effect on the local climate. In hot weather, the water can cool the surroundings, and in cooler seasons, it can retain warmth, creating a more temperate micro-climate for your home.

PRIVACY AND EXCLUSIVITY Being situated in more secluded locations, many waterfront homes offer a greater degree of privacy. This exclusivity can enhance the feeling of luxury and escape every day.

WELLNESS AND MENTAL HEALTH Studies have shown that proximity to water has a positive impact on mental health. The calming effect of water can reduce anxiety, increase happiness, and promote well-being.

RETIREMENT PLAN Whether retiring or simply seeking a change of lifestyle, waterside living encourages simplified living. Downsizing from a larger home often means managing a smaller household with less possessions, leading to a greater sense of peace and contentment and the chance to concentrate on how to spend your free time.

The calming effect of water is well-documented. The gentle lapping of waves or the stillness of a lake can reduce stress and promote a sense of tranquillity. www.tingdeneboating.com | 27

Going Solar

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SOLAR POWER PANELS FOR BOATERS? 1. Save money on ever-increasing bills. 2. Endless supply of energy to your boat. 3. Reduced carbon emissions which is better for you and the environment. 4. Lower noise levels on the water to improve your boating experience without disturbing nature. 5. Overall costs of boating are reduced. Think about how much gas you use for charging non-essentials such as bikes, laptops, phones and the TV. 6. You can travel further, for longer because you have your own renewable energy source. 7. You could even eliminate the cost of fuel altogether with the right solar power source installed. 8. You can also significantly reduce the weight and size of the unit carried on the boat with the right choice of solar panels.

Winterising your boat

GET READY WINTER IS COMING! With a colder nip now in the air, it’s that time of year once again to prepare your boat for winter. Keep unwanted problems at bay with some simple tips to winterise your vessel and make for an easier launch next spring. DRAIN FRESH WATER Open your taps and let the fresh water drain overboard. When finished, turn the water pump off at the switch panel. Leave the shower and all taps on (especially the hot taps if you have a calorifier). Turning the stop cock off is not sufficient by itself.

INBOARD RAW WATER Cooled engines should have the sea cock turned off, antifreeze fed into the raw water feed and fed around the engine until it leaves the exhaust. Check that the sealed cooling, if present, and the required level of anti-freeze in the system.

CHECK ANTI-FREEZE LEVELS Coolant anti-freeze level should withstand a minimum of -20°C and have levels topped up.

INSTANT WATER HEATERS Instant water heaters should be drained using the plug. Leave the plug out with a bowl under the outlet and turn the thermostat to maximum.

DIESEL HEATERS Diesel heaters with a frost start require a full tank of diesel and very good batteries. If you have access to electricity through a metered lead and a marine battery charger, connect to the shoreline so that batteries do not go flat. Do not rely on mains electricity to keep your batteries topped up!

ELECTRIC HEATERS Running a heater with a thermostat can be beneficial as long as the electrical supply is constant and appliances are trustworthy. A greenhouse ‘tube’ heater is recommended (avoid fan, bar, and gas heaters, or any with exposed elements). Do not rely on mains electricity to keep your craft from freezing. Electric heaters should be used with caution.

MOORING LINES & ROPES

Fill your fuel tank to the brim to prevent condensation forming, and just before refuelling, use a bug cleansing treatment.

Check all mooring lines for chafing or wear and if they are worn, they should be replaced. Please refrain from using the whole 10 metres of line on a mooring tee to secure your craft, as this will cause problems if we need to loosen your ropes due to water levels, wind, or snapped ropes.

BATTERY LEVELS

COLLAPSING COVERS

PREVENT DIESEL BUGS

Full batteries should be topped up and fully charged every 4-6 six weeks. Battery levels on all wet cells should be topped up with distilled water (except the ‘sealed for life’ design). Turn off battery isolators, and if you have an installed marine battery charger, turn on to keep batteries topped up.

VENTILATION Circulating air throughout your boat is essential. Leave window hoppers ajar, open all drawers and cupboards, and prop your fridge door open. Be sure to store linens and clothing ashore. Remember to avoid blocking any low-level vents around the vessel. 34 | www.tingdeneboating.com

Always cover your boat if stored outside. Check the cover regularly and if damaged, replace as quickly as possible.

GENERAL ENGINE MAINTENANCE Engine cleaning and monitoring is a priority and is best completed by an engineer. They will check through all workings, particularly the exhaust, oil filters, coolant levels and corrosion. Please contact your marina who will be happy to help you with local engineers.

1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan assisted or gas mark 3) and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. 2. Mix together the butter, sugar and cinnamon until combined. 3. Roll out your puff pastry and keep it on the enclosed paper. 4. Use a spoon to spread the cinnamon filling mix over the pastry, leaving a 1cm gap at the edge of one of the longest sides. 5. Using the puff pastry’s enclosed paper, gently roll the pastry into a roll, leaving the 1cm gap to seal the swirls by lightly pressing them in place. 6. Cut the pastry into sections around 2cm thick, and trim the ends of the pastry to keep each swirl even. Place the swirls onto the lined baking tray with some space between each. 7. Use the beaten egg to lightly coat and sprinkle a little sugar over them. Leave to rest for around 20-30 minutes. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until golden brown. 8. Mix the icing sugar with a little warm water to make the drizzle. 9. Remove the swirls from the oven and whilst still warm on their baking tray, drizzle the icing over them. 10. Once cool enough, transfer to a wire rack to cool or tuck in.
