WHERE TO GO Oulton Broad is the Suffolk Broads’ most easterly location, residing next to the traditional seaside resort of Lowestoft. The Broads National Park has over 125 miles of lock free waterways that you can explore in Norfolk & Suffolk. Visit many historic villages and towns along the way, with pubs, restaurants, nature reserves and more to explore. SOMERLEYTON 6 miles North on River Waveney (1h15m journey time)
BECCLES 10 miles South on River Waveney (2h15m journey time)
An idyllic village with Norse roots, Somerleyton features historic timber frame thatched houses, Somerleyton Hall (a Victorian stately home and estate, still in residence) and one of the last remaining railway swing bridges on the Broads. Stop by the Staithe and take a walk along the riverside path to a three storey smock mill in Herringfleet, built in 1820. Or follow the path to The Duke’s Head, a popular gastropub frequented by locals and tourists alike. It is owned by the Somerleyton Estate, along with The Fritton Arms on Fritton Lake just 4 miles away.
Once a Saxon fishing port, Beccles is a large and vibrant market town on the banks of the River Waveney boasting its own lido, museum and historic market square. Visit St Michael’s Church, which dates back to 1369 and has a separate Bell Tower that you can climb to enjoy views up to 20 miles away. Browse the many independent shops and boutiques along the winding streets and stop for a drink or coffee at a variety of cafés and restaurants. Carry on down the river to Geldeston Lock, one of the most unspoilt sections of the Broads with a cottage built in 1506 housing The Locks Inn, a pub that has been serving the locals since the 17th century.
BURGH CASTLE 13 miles North on River Yare (3 h journey time) Home to the remains of a 3rd century Roman fort, Burgh Castle was built as one of nine coastal defences 9 over the Waveney estuary, which stretched for miles over the Great Yarmouth and Broadland area. It now overlooks the River Yare and Breydon Water, a bird watcher’s paradise. You can head into the village to visit the round towered Saxon church, walk along the Angles Way footpath on the estuary banks for 3.5 miles to nearby Great Yarmouth, or venture further upstream from Breydon Water to visit Berney Arms Windmill; one of the tallest mills on the Broads with stunning views over the other side of the estuary. 12
w w w.tingdene-m a rinas.co .u k
LODDON 15.5miles North on River Chet (3h15m journey time) Loddon is small market town set along the River Chet, a tributary of the River Yare. It is centred around the Holy Trinity Church, it’s current form built in 1490 on the site of a church that possibly dated back to 630 AD, containing medieval and ancient artefacts. The town itself has a variety of other historic buildings that reflect it’s growth through history, as well as a bustling high street with independent shops and eateries as well as with some you may recognise. You can also join onto Wherryman’s Way, a 37.5 mile walking trail that runs between Norwich and Great Yarmouth, featuring reserves, open marshes and other villages along the River Yare.
