Firstly, we would like to say how pleased we are to have things relatively back to normal. It’s been great to see so many of you at the marinas since the start of the season and we hope there will be no further disruption this year. As the interest in boating has grown over the past 16 months you will probably not be surprised to hear that there are now more people on the UK’s canals and rivers than there were in the 18th century, when Brits utilised the native waters for importing, exporting and travel. So, if you’re new to boating and/or new to one of our marinas we’d like to welcome you to the Tingdene boating community. As things continue to open up we’re very much looking forward to the resumption of boat shows over the coming months. With the Crick Boat Show in August and the Southampton International Boat Show in September there is plenty for us to get excited about. We can’t wait to see you all again and to have the opportunity to showcase some of the fantastic boats we have available. Do come along and visit us if you get the chance. With staycations on the agenda again this summer, there’s certainly no better time to get out and enjoy the UK’s plentiful water-based activities. Read more about British Marine’s ‘Summer on the Water’ campaign and check out our ideas for things to do on your boat this summer later in the magazine. We’ve even tried out some boat barbecues for you so you can be the master of your grill. Relax, enjoy the sunshine (when we see it) and have a great summer. Best wishes, Steve Arber Operations Director Tingdene Marinas

ost people dream of the day they finally get the keys to their first home, but for some that perfect home comes with a tiller and an anchor. Taking to the water is a major lifestyle choice; one that can bring a calming sense of wellbeing thanks to the water lapping against your boat as the sun beams across your deck. Uncrowded waterways with easy mooring and navigation on your own floating piece of heaven makes it easy to embark on your own personal journey of a lifetime. Whether it’s because of the meditative sound of waves gently kissing your boat or the cathartic rush of a stormy seashore, marine and coastal locations are some of the happiest places in the world. With thousands of miles of varied and beautiful coastline, navigable canals and rivers, a wealth of gorgeous marinas and quays, and an incredible 40,000 lakes, the UK is not short of wonderful blue spaces to help keep spirits high and temperaments calm.
SOL SEEKER 57’ NARROWBOAT 2 double berths | 2 cabins | 1 bathroom Tingdene Boat Sales has this stunning 2021 Sol Seeker 57 currently for sale, so if you can’t wait to get out on the water this could be exactly what you’re looking for. Contact Guy Girling & Nathan Kipling thamesboatsales@tingdene.net 01189 477 770 Out on our rivers and canals the pace is a little slower, as Britain’s waterways offer a different and unique experience; providing a home to liveaboard boaters, a sanctuary for staycationers and a comfortable place from which to work from home. Waking up at sunrise to the birds singing is pure tranquility and takes you to a place where you appreciate the little things in life, where your only concerns are topping up the water tank or finding wood to put on the fire at night. Summer days consist of sunbathing on the roof or cruising down the river and winter nights are made warm and cosy with a roaring fire in the wood burner. It’s probably no surprise to find out that sales of narrowboats and widebeam boats have skyrocketed since the pandemic hit. International travel restrictions look set to be in place for some time, so staycations and holiday homes are in high demand. Many of us are looking for new adventures and are turning to the country’s stunning canals and rivers; not just for a holiday, but for something more permanent - a narrowboat to call home. www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk

TINGDENE MARINAS are all located in fantastic spots where you can relax by the waterside, live or work on the water and make the most of all the wellbeing benefits of spending time beside beautiful blue spaces. All 9 of our boat sales offices (River Thames, River Severn, River Great Ouse, The Broads and River Wey) are interlinked for buyers and sellers alike. We offer the full range of sports cruisers and motor yachts from Cranchi, as well as narrowboats, widebeams and river cruisers. In addition, we have around 150 used boats for sale at any one time.
SOL SEEKER NARROWBOATS builds contemporary narrowboats and widebeams that are customised to suit the needs and desires of the customer. Partnering with Tingdene, Sol Seeker has created a new range of bespoke narrowboats that suit the ever-growing lifestyle choices of those seeking a contemporary apartment afloat, or a luxury boat on which to cruise thousands of miles of inland waterway networks. VIKING CANAL BOATS is a family-owned company, founded in 2008 to build widebeam canal boats, unique barges and narrowboats. Every boat is bespoke; from the interior build and layout to colour schemes and furnishings. Their premium design service allows customer visions to come to life in a truly unique way, offering all the comforts of a bricks and mortar home on the canal. Lovingly hand-crafted by a small but passionate team, Sol Seeker prides itself on attention to detail and provides customers with the most beautiful and functional narrowboats on the water. They deliver modern and sophisticated design; stern options in either cruiser, semitraditional or traditional and interior layouts that come in reverse or forward as standard. Sol Seeker still has a few build slots available this year, so if you’re looking for a brand-new bespoke narrowboat, now is the time to get your order in.
Viking’s shipyard is located in the vicinity of Wolin in Poland, where a semi-legendary Viking stronghold existed between the 960s and 1043, according to Nordic sagas. By taking the Viking name, the boat builders guarantee that their canal boats will proudly serve customers as the Vikings’ long boats served them, decorating each vessel with a dragon head. “We pride ourselves on our attention to the finer details at every step of the boat building process and deliver beautiful yet practical vessels for each and every one of our customers,” said Kristof of Viking Canal Boats. “Tingdene’s ethos is very much in line with our own and we’re excited to collaborate with them to sell a range of boats which we can both be proud.”
“We’re a family business and we like our clients to become part of the family, just as Tingdene has created a community that’s friendly, family orientated and respectful,” said Jo at Sol Seeker. “We’re looking forward to working together to create beautiful, bespoke narrowboats for Tingdene Boat Sales’ customers.” www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk

THE MAGNIFICENT
SEVERN T
he River Severn is Britain’s longest and mightiest river, running from the Welsh mountains, through the stunning Worcestershire and Shropshire countryside, down to the flatlands of the Severn estuary. Cruising the Severn is for countryside lovers who enjoy life in the slow lane. The majority of the route is rural but it does take in the medieval cities of Worcester and Gloucester, both well worth having a mooch around.
CATHEDRAL CITIES Worcester is a vibrant cathedral city with a fascinating history. The medieval Worcester Cathedral houses royal tombs, a crypt and cloisters - a must-visit on your journey. There are also several excellent museums that focus on the city’s industrial past, from traditional brewing to weaving, as well as a nod to city life in Tudor and 17th-century Worcester, housed in the timber-framed Tudor House Museum. The city is also famous for Worcester porcelain and the delightfully spicy Worcestershire Sauce. Worcester Cathedral on the River Severn

The Malvern Hills are just a few miles west of the River Severn
The cathedral city of Gloucester is Britain’s most inland port and has a rich history dating back to Roman times. Gloucester’s many museums and attractions showcase the city’s proud military and industrial heritage. The magnificent Gothic cathedral is the site of Henry III’s coronation and the final resting place of King Edward II. Gloucester Docks is a popular leisure destination for shopping, food and drink, set against the backdrop of the beautifully restored Victorian warehouses and the vast Gloucester Sharpness Canal.
THINGS TO SEE AND DO ALONG THE WAY Meandering down the Severn you’ll find plenty of nearby attractions that will be fun for all the family. None more so than the magnificent Severn Valley Heritage Steam Railway which runs for 16 miles, following the course of the river for much of the route. For a very special stop-off, visit the The Ironbridge Attractions that include Coalbrookdale in the Ironbridge Gorge, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its significance to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution makes it a site of outstanding international importance and it is protected by an international convention. There are 10 different attractions in Ironbridge – more than enough to keep you busy for a day or two. As boating enthusiasts, The National Waterways Museum at the historical Gloucester Docks is an attraction you’ll not want to miss. Sporting a vast collection of historical boats, the museum details the history of Britain’s canals using a variety of mediums. Along the way there are plenty of gorgeous villages to explore with tea shops, pubs and eateries. We recommend a stop-off in Bewdley which is a picturesque Georgian town packed with excellent restaurants and bars, as well as independent shops, galleries and much more.
Tewkesbury Abbey
14
www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk
The beautiful medieval town of Tewkesbury is also a highlight, with a visit to the historic Tewkesbury Abbey founded in Norman times to house Benedictine Monks an absolute must.
MARINAS AND MOORINGS Located in the stunning countryside of rural Worcestershire and perfectly positioned for exploring the magnificent Severn is Stourport Marina. One of our nine inland marinas, Stourport offers 130 moorings to berth widebeam ocean going craft as well as river and canal cruisers. Set among landscaped gardens, the marina has all of the usual amenities you would expect as well as a fantastic clubhouse with a restaurant and bar serving good old-fashioned homely dishes. There are also evening events at the clubhouse including dancing and light entertainment. It’s an excellent base for cruising the Worcester and Staffordshire canal system and is just 5 hours cruising from the river Avon and 10 hours from the Bristol Channel, giving cruising potential to the Welsh, Devon and Cornish Coasts.
TAKE THE PLUNGE Whether this is your first foray onto Britain’s waterways or you’re a seasoned sailor, you can’t beat the majestic River Severn for your staycation this year. Remember as part of the Tingdene Loyalty Scheme all annual berth holders are entitled to 28-nights free mooring at other Tingdene Marinas, so why not pay Stourport Marina a visit! www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk

LIFE ON THE WATER
THE FASTEST WAY TO
SLOW DOWN Slap on the sunblock, grab a life jacket and head to the lake, canal, river, broad or high seas. By boat is an exciting way to view Britain’s amazing coastlines, wonderful waterways and beautiful countryside. With staycations very much on the cards this summer, perhaps it’s time to discover a new passion and go on an adventure Swallows-and-Amazons-style.

R
iver cruising and narrow-boating holidays are experiencing a boom, with a 150% surge in canal boat bookings as Britons seek an alternative to camping, caravan or seaside hotels. Canal boats offer the chance to live in luxury whilst traversing some of the UK’s most scenic destinations in almost complete isolation - the perfect sociallydistanced getaway. There’s also the option of creating a flotilla of two or more boats that’s particularly appealing for families that have been separated during lockdown. Row along the River Thames, take a canal boat through The Fens, explore Coniston by canoe, go barging on the Broads, set sail in Scilly, cruise on the Ouse, or enjoy watersports at Gosport. The possibilities are endless.
FAMILY FUN Being on the water is the perfect canvas for adventure and relaxation - time to reflect, space to explore and a magical opportunity to enjoy a fabulous break. Family boating is a great way to create lifelong memories. Taking the kids out on the water helps to connect with nature and with each other. Families bond over shared fun and the teamwork needed when it comes to things like navigating locks, docking, anchoring and watersports. It’s also a great way to develop skills that easily transfer to all areas of life, such as decisionmaking, craftsmanship, mechanical skills, nautical terminology, vehicle safety, and water safety. www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk
17
LAP UP THE LUXURY These days, modern canal boats and river cruisers are the epitome in luxurious travel. There are still more rustic and basic vessels available for hire or for sale, but the demand for high-end designs and mod-cons now means these boats are fully equipped with all the essentials: central heating, hot water, TVs, DVD players, showers and flushing toilets, Wi-Fi and barbeques.
RELAX AND UNWIND Boats offer complete freedom on where to go and which route to take. There’s no timetable, no pressure and no traffic jams or queues. Perhaps there’s a quaint village or a nature reserve along the way, or a delightful pub serving tempting food and ales. Just moor up and spend the day! With narrowboat speed limits of 4mph and 2,000 miles of calming canals to cruise along, stress levels are reduced and a whole new, much steadier and tranquil pace of life takes over. Plus, a boating holiday is estimated to be around 20 times better for the planet than spending two hours flying for a holiday overseas, using a third of the fuel of a car and emitting a sixth of the pollution. What a way to save the planet! Boating also has major health benefits, so get unplugged and swap the computer screens for sunscreen. Enjoying the great outdoors and interacting with the physical environment is a major boost for health and wellbeing. Proximity to ‘blue space’ – sea and coastline, rivers, lakes, and canals – is associated with many positive benefits such as less polluted air and more vitamin D boosting sunlight.
18
www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk
Speaking of which, boats can also be a haven for foodies with barbeques on board, or picnics on the river’s edge and wonderful pubs, cafés and restaurants aplenty along the way. In fact, there’s always a charming pub serving hearty fayre just around the bend. Britain’s waterways are littered with a myriad of superb places to eat and drink, and getting to explore these is just another brilliant bonus of river and canal cruising. There is nothing more satisfying and relaxing than finishing a long day of bobbing around on the water with a nice pint in a sunny canal-side beer garden.
HISTORY & HERITAGE The Industrial Revolution changed the shape of our nation, largely due to the remarkable canal network that was carved into our landscape in the mid 18th century to link pre-existing natural waterways. Two hundred years of peat digging and rising sea levels brought us the largest navigable waters in the UK, The Broads. These waters offered the most economic and reliable way to transport goods and commodities in large quantities and enabled Britain to become the world’s first industrial power. Today our waterways are brimming with history, from gorgeous national heritage sites and stately homes to awe-inspiring feats of architecture. Thousands of historic structures are spread throughout Britain’s canal and river system. World Heritage Sites such as Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, and the awe-inspiring three-mile long Standedge Tunnel are just two that are well worth a visit. Over the years, they have become a magnet to a huge variety of wildlife; there is always something to see, be it in the heart of a city or drifting through quiet countryside.
MASTER THE WATER It’s easy to master driving a boat and navigating the waterways. A hire company or sales agent will explain how everything works and offer demonstrations, ensuring a safe, controlled and confident captain is at the helm.
With an increasing number of marinas dotted around the country on inland waterways or beside the sea, there are many more opportunities to have a permanent mooring that can be a fulltime abode or a lock-up-and-leave holiday home. These offer boat owners many benefits from security, tuition and assistance, to shops to stock up on gear, clothes and food for their sailing adventures. There are hundreds of boating holiday operators across the country that have different types of crafts for hire on a day, weekend, weekly or longer-term basis. Hitting the waterways in a hire craft is the perfect way to dip your toes into the water and find out if messing about on the river really is for you.
From day cruisers and bass anglers to wave riders and white-water rafters, there’s an armada of different types of boats on offer that are divided into four categories:
Tingdene Marinas offer berthing at 9 different, stunning locations across the canals, rivers and Broads of the UK. We’ve also got dayboat hire at 3 of our marinas, plus partnerships with watersports providers.
CRUISING Geared to those looking to spend time relaxing or entertaining on the water. Some offer room and features sufficient for a day cruise; others feature cabins and amenities for overnight stays. Narrowboats, day cruisers, yachts and bow riders all fall into this category. FISHING Open cockpits in the stern allow for more bow deck space to make it easier to fish. While smaller vessels don’t have much room for seating, larger craft may include cabins for overnight trips. WATERSPORTS Specifically designed to accommodate water skiers and wake boarders, these boats have towing capabilities and offer a faster, more thrilling ride. UNPOWERED/MAN-POWERED Perfect for getting out on the water quickly, modest crafts such as sail boats, kayaks, canoes, wakeboards and dinghies are ideal for exploring lakes, rivers and oceans. Power and propulsion are provided by wind and some good old-fashioned elbow grease.

TOP 5 THINGS TO DO THIS SUMMER Summer, the prime time to be outside and on the water (when the British weather is behaving itself.) Sometimes we can take advantage of the world around us and forget about the importance of fresh air and vitamin D. Here’s 5 fantastic activities you can try this summer, on or near to your boat or marina, that will get you reconnected with nature.
20
www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk
www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk
21
1
PADDLEBOARDING
An ancient way to get around the waters that potentially dates back to 3000 BC, Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) was introduced to the world in its modern form in Hawaii in the 1900’s. SUP has had a significant uprising in recent years - you can hire paddleboards from most seafronts, rivers & bodies of water across the UK these days. Hire a paddleboard (or kayak) from Go-Paddle at our very own Hartford Marina, or the Oulton Broad Water Sports Centre next to Broadlands Marina. If you don’t fancy paddleboarding, there’s plenty of other watersports to try like the previously mentioned kayaking, canoeing, surfing - or even track down an inflatable aqua park!
2 GARDENING
From rooftop gardening on a narrowboat, to growing greens on a cruiser; there’s plenty of options to keep plants healthy and stable aboard your boat.
22
www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk
Try pots on non-skid mats, or cords/ropes to secure your planters. Keep to plastic to avoid the risk of glass or ceramic breaking onboard. Your plants will be more subject to the elements so keep an eye on water levels - the rain might be doing too much, or not enough. Marine water should be fine for your flowers, but keep it away from any vegetable/edible plants to prevent parasites. Give the leaves a rinse if they’re subject to sea spray, as the salt levels may disrupt your plants.
3 PHOTOGRAPHY
What better time of year is there to start (or reignite) a passion for photography. Birds, butterflies, bees and flowers. Landscapes, waterscapes, sunrise and sunset. Take advantage of those long daylight hours and get snapping. There’s plenty of affordable camera options, if you don’t already have a fantastic camera on a high tech smartphone. Check online for lots of tips, tricks and photography blogs, or find inspiration on Pinterest, Flickr or a plethora of websites and magazines dedicated to capturing the world around us.
4 POND DIPPING
A fun activity for children and adults alike, give pond dipping a go this summer. Take a look under the water and see what you can find. Buy or make some nets, get a tray (ideally white) for assessing your finds, a spoon or pot to look a bit closer and a guide to know what you’re looking for. Be sure to be careful and safely return everything you’ve found. The RSPB, Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, NHBS and Woodland Trust all have great resources of how to go about connecting with nature and finding creatures to observe.
5 ‘APPY IN NATURE
The UK has its fair share of native and visiting wildlife during the summer months and there’s a variety of ways in which you can track which wildlife you see on your travels. Swifts are constantly in flight (unless they’re nesting), travelling to the UK in the early summer months until they return to Africa around 12 weeks later. Head to Swift Mapper to track where you see nesting swifts so their sites can be protected. Bees are an essential part of our ecosystem; based on your experience, you can track bees with Friends of the Earth to add data on any bees you see and the conditions around them. If you want to see what you can hunt down wherever you are, download the Nature Finder app. Made by the Wildlife Trust, it shows all their sites across the UK and which wildlife you can expect to find at each location. www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk
23
TEES, TREES AND
TRANQUILITY It’s great that the green list is another step on our journey back to normality, but it doesn’t mean you have to take a journey abroad. Uncertain of safety issues on the one hand, with the certainty of ever higher ticket prices on the other, you’re probably still pondering on what to do for the best. The best and greenest answer might be closer to home than you think. Owning your own UK holiday home has never made more sense. 24

HOLIDAY HOMES WITH GOLF ON THE DOORSTEP Tingdene Caldecott Hall Country Park has everything you’re looking for in a holiday home location. COBB CHARCOAL OVEN £119.95 at cobb-bbq.co.uk The Cobb has been developed into its present form from an electricity-free cooking system for rural areas in Africa, getting its namesake from the dry corncobs that were used as its fuel source. Now using coals, briquettes or their own ‘cobblestone’, food is isolated from the coals so there are no flare-ups or smoke. It contains a metal basket for the coals, sitting inside a stainless steel bowl, where the firelighters sit beneath, all encased within the outer shell that stays cool when in use. There’s a range of accessories you can buy for different types of cooking too.
KUUMA STOW N’ GO 160 GAS GRILL BBQ £259.95 at marinesuperstore.com Available as a charcoal grill too, the Kuuma Stow N’ Go 160 Gas Grill is designed for high pressure gas canisters and can be mounted to any Kuuma rail, rod or pedestal mount aboard your boat. It’s ready to go out of the box and easy to set up, plus rust resistant and easy to clean due to the hardy stainless steel design. You can get plenty of food on this large but lightweight barbecue, and it performs well in windy weather which is handy when you’re out on the water. Prices may vary - correct at time of print
