WE’VE GOT NEWS FOR YOU

PYRFORD MARINA REJUVENATED ROADWAYS

We have recently had some of the roadways at Pyrford Marina completely resurfaced. New curb stones were installed on both sides of the roadway, the level of the road has been raised slightly to avoid flooding and a new surface installed on the top. This will not only future-proof these roads from the weather and traffic, but also look much tidier for berth holders and visitors.

THAMES AND KENNET MARINA GOING GREEN

Thames and Kennet Marina have started offsetting their carbon footprint. The marina is supporting sustainable projects and initiatives around the world through donations from the fuel sold on site, these include everything from reforestation, building and maintaining wind farms, funding clean water projects and reducing landfill. Just one week’s delivery of fuel alone produced approx. £360, totalling an overall offset of 12,000 litres of diesel. A huge achievement!

WINDSOR RACECOURSE MARINA HOIST UPGRADE

Windsor Racecourse Marina has recently aquired a ‘new’ hoist, replacing the 40 year old Acme crane. Mark Pearce, Windsor Racecourse Marina Manager, commented, “We had a choice of either spending a significant amount of money to keep the old hoist running or invest in a new unit. Thankfully, a unit with the same width of our gantry became available and the rest they say is history. Suitable for boats up to 38 tons, the new hoist can lift widebeams, narrowboats and Dutch barges ashore. Alongside Thames and Kennet Marina we now have two of the largest hoists locally, to assist both berth holders and visitors.

WAVENEY MARINA NEW FACILITIES

Waveney Marina has had some huge additions to their facilities. A new self-serve pump-out has been installed, that is completely free to use for all annual berth holders from any Tingdene Marina. A new diesel fuel pump has also been fitted, offering discounted prices exclusively to all Tingdene berth holders, one of the many perks of being part of the Tingdene Privilege loyalty scheme. Take advantage of these cost savings if you are sailing nearby on the beautiful Broads. Both facilities are open 7 days a week.

MEET THE TEAM

There’s always more to people than meets the eye, which is why we’re shedding the light on the people behind Tingdene Marinas and Boat Sales.

Brendon Brady has been our Marina Assistant at Waveney River Centre Marina since June 2021.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOB HISTORY

I have an HND in Dairy Herd Management, but then moved into Retail Management in 1987. I owned a sucessful mobile car tyre business in 2008, retiring over ten years later, aged 54 (or so I thought!). I then went travelling for a year in a motorhome, before purchasing my boat ‘Countess of Light’ a year later. I have been moored at Waveney River Centre for around 18 months, where I got my job as Marina Assistant. I also cover emergency out of hours for Tingdene Holiday Parks and work parttime for the Waveney Inn, the marina’s onsite pub and restaurant.

I keep telling people, and it is true, I’ve never been so happy or content with life since moving to Waveney.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT WORKING FOR TINGDENE MARINAS?

The people, the place, the job. Working with such lovely staff and clients, in such a beautiful location, with boats and on the river. Don’t tell anyone, but you can’t call it work, it’s far too much fun!

WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU ABOUT WORKING IN THE MARINA INDUSTRY?

Helping facilitate people to enjoy their holidays, free time and passions of being on their boats and on the water.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU ARE NOT WORKING?

I’ve had several hobbies; racing yachts on the Solent, flying light aircraft, driving track cars, rifle target shooting, archery, motorbiking, running (I ran the Great South Run) and parachuting. But now I just love to be out on my boat with good books, good wine, good food and restaurants close by.

WHAT YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE?

I have some favourites; 'Be grateful for what you have', 'Live life for YOU', 'Look down on no one' and ' Forgive, forget, move on'.

FAVOURITE QUOTE?

‘A loss is not a loss until something better comes along, then that loss becomes a gain’.

FAVOURITE BOOK?

My Bible.

FAVOURITE FILM?

‘Ice Cold in Alex’, a 1958 black and white movie.

WHAT ARE THE VALUES THAT DRIVE YOU? Honesty, Integrity, Fairness and Respect.

EXPLORING NORFOLK & SUFFOLK

East Coast cruising

The east coast has always been one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK, on both land and water.

Find out how this wonderful stretch of Britain can enrich your life.

SUFFOLK

Suffolk is a county filled with natural beauty, bordered by 50 miles of glorious coastline and topped with breathtaking skies.

Situated on the east coast of England, it’s full of charming villages, medieval towns and seaside havens. There are few places in Britain more picturesque than Suffolk, yet it is just two hours from London and the Midlands.

Tingdene Broadlands Marina is situated on the Southern Broads in the county. Home to a variety of fantastic locations, both rural and urban, it is clear how the county has become known as one of the most desirable locations for commuters searching for a change of lifestyle. It has a fascinating history, beautiful countryside and some truly picturesque villages, where colourful cottages, remote village pubs and rolling countryside are the norm.

Suffolk boasts magnificent castles, exquisite stately homes and gorgeous gardens aplenty that offer countless chances for exploration and adventure.

09 www.tingdeneboating.com

NORFOLK

Norfolk is known for endless skies and wide horizons stretching over sandy beaches. The county is a magnet for fans of the great outdoors, particularly boating enthusiasts, and nature observers.

Norfolk’s rural beauty and stunning landscapes hold a huge similarity to those in Suffolk – they share a coastline after all! But something that sets them apart is the Norfolk Broad’s range across the county. The water network in its entirety covers 120 miles of navigable waterways, in which seven rivers and 63 broads reside combined.

The larger proportion of this winds through Norfolk’s countryside, so there is an abundance of opportunity to discover some hidden treasures along the waterline while you are taking your boat out for the day.

Brundall Bay Marina and newly acquired Waveney Marina are located on the Norfolk Broads, giving seamless access to the broads for an easily accessible adventure on the water. Jump straight onto the River Yare and River Waveney in minutes and begin your journey around Britains best waterways.

Stop by in Horning on the River Bure, and check out their wonderful pubs, shops, restaurants and tea rooms. Just outside the village is BeWILDerwood, a treehouse family adventure park ideal for a great day out with all the family.

Wroxham on the River Bure is often referred to as the capital of the Broads because of it's many attractions, including Wroxham Barns and Hoveton Hall. On Womack Water, the village of Ludham has outstanding views of the river to be enjoyed with a coffee on a sunny morning, and closeby Ranworth is home to a popular nature reserve, Ranworth Broad and Marshes.

If you enjoy walking, Beccles on the River Waveney has the Beccles Marsh Trail and also an outdoor swimming pool for the warmer months. Stop by at Reedham on the River Yare and take in the 19th century grade II listed windmill called Polkey’s Mill. A sight not to be missed!

10 www.tingdeneboating.com

"I am still reeling with delight at the soaring majesty o f Norfolk"

DID YOU KNOW?

The Broads is home to more than a quarter of the rarest species in the country - greater than any other national park in Britain

Britain’s largest butterfly, The Swallowtail, and the Norfolk Hawker dragonfly are found only here.

The Broads are Britain’s largest protected wetland, and its conservation is incredibly important to the biodiversity of the UK.

Each national park has an authority responsible for conserving the distinct qualities of their area for future generations, including conserving culture and heritage in farms, villages, towns and cities.

The Broads come in all shapes and sizes. From small pools to vast exapanses of water, only 13 of the 63 braods are actually fully navigable.

The Broads receive eight million visitors every year!

2023 BOAT SHOWS

In 2023, the best in boating events will be opening the doors once again. Visitors from all around the country have the opportunity to view boats in the flesh, speak to experts in boating and explore the latest technology in the industry.

Locally, there is even more to explore! Our marina villages, towns and cities all have so many exciting events taking place this summer, so why not go along and see what catches your eye, dance to live music at a festival and discover something new!

What makes these events so great is that you get to meet like-minded people in the local area through having fun.

There will be so many more events going on in your local marina's area, so keep a look out in your marina office, on social pages and local news for any others that may be confirmed soon!

SEALINE BOATS

Introducing SEALINE

Infinite configuration possibilities

From the first draft to the final product, every Sealine boat is designed to make the most of the space on board. From the bed size, headroom, and storage, every aspect is considered. Sealine are leaders in the market for this important design factor, setting the standards for the top brands worldwide in the respective size classes.

On board each boat, you will find the most up-to-date technology and a host of innovative moveable seating areas, dining spaces and reclining spots, to fulfil the highest possible standard of comfort, safety, versatility, performance and seaworthiness. This makes life on board as easy and free flowing as possible.

For added functionality, the deckhouse can be closed if needed, ensuring excellent protection from the weather, and the low draft also makes it easy to anchor in shallow bays.

THE SEALINE STORY

In 1972, aircraft engineer Tom Murrant turned his unsucessful search for a family boat into building it himself. Tom and two friends completed his 23-foot cabin cruiser, and it soon became clear that what they had built had huge potential to become a commercial success. Murrant took the chance and founded company Fibrasonic Marine Ltd. In 1978, Fibrasonic moved to bigger premesis in Kidderminster, where the first C-LINE weekender was developed.

The C-LINE boats had soon made a name for themselves, with their individual designs and use of versatility and space on board, propelling the business internationally and into building longer, more luxurious yachts. The 30 Fly and 285 Ambassador quickly became best sellers and C -LINE soon became Sealine. Sealine soon entered the US-market and rose to one of the “Big Four” British motorboat builders.

In 1998, Tom Murrant and his co-partners sold the company, which then passed onto different hands up until 2013, but achieved some great successes during that time. This included the 2004 launch of T60 Aura, the biggest Sealine ever, made advancing their motor yacht line up to the 60 feet class.

In 2013, Hanseyachts bought the Sealine brand and all models and soon began advanced development plans, with S330 and C330 launching in 2014/15.

In 2016, Sealine embraced their renowned use of space on board and renamed the fly bridge into “fly lounge” to reflect the comfort and luxury passengers experience.

Now, Sealine continues to focus on creating perfect, sociable experiences on water, while maintaining its distinctive but safe, seaworthy craft.

This impressive range creates a unique pairing of a modern rounded hull and a square attitude, giving functionality wrapped in beauty, all while tradition runs through the core. A must for boat lovers.

WINTERISING YOUR BOAT

The UK’s unpredictable and sometimes extreme weather conditions during the winter months can wreak havoc on your craft if it is not properly prepared. So, if you’re going to leave your boat unattended for any length of time this winter, we recommend you winterise it so that you don’t have any unwelcomed surprises when you return in the spring.

Storing your boat correctly over the winter can help prevent the effects of corrosion, among many other things. The more effectively you winterise, the more easily she’ll relaunch next year.

We have selected some of the most helpful hints and tips for winterising your boat this year from our expert staff, knowledgeable customers with years of boating experience.

Please be sure to check with a boat engineer if you have any questions or need some help. Our marina staff will be able to give you contact details of services local to you.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT RELY ON

GET DRAINING

Draining fresh water

Open your taps and let the fresh water drain overboard. When water stops coming out, turn the water pump off at the switch panel. Leave all taps on (especially the hot taps if you have a calorifier). Don’t forget your shower too, making sure to place the shower head in the shower tray or bath. Turning the stop cock off is not sufficient by itself.

CHECK YOUR LEVELS

Inboard raw water

Raw water cooled engines should have the sea cock turned off, anti-freeze fed into the raw water feed and circulated around the engine until it leaves the exhaust. Check that the sealed cooling (if present) also has the required level of anti-freeze in the system.

KEEP COOL

Anti-freeze levels

Engines should be checked for a coolant anti-freeze level of at least -20 degrees and should have the fill level topped right up.

MAINS

ELECTRICITY TO KEEP YOUR BATTERIES

TOPPED UP OR TO KEEP YOUR BOAT FROM FREEZING

BANISH THE BUGS

Prevent diesel bugs

If your vessel is being lifted out for the winter, you need to prevent the growth of diesel bugs. These microorganisms thrive in even the smallest amounts of water, often from condensation and particularly at the interface of fuel and water. The easiest way to combat them is to fill your fuel tank to the brim to prevent condensation forming. Just before refuelling is the perfect opportunity to use a fuel treatment to kill off any bugs that may already be present.

GET CHARGED UP

Battery levels

Batteries that are left uncharged for long periods may need to be replaced completely, so ongoing maintenance is essential. Full batteries are less likely to freeze in sub-zero temperatures and should be topped up and fully charged every four to six weeks. Battery levels on all wet cells should be checked and topped up with distilled water unless these are of the ‘sealed for life’ type. Turn off battery isolators, and if you have an installed marine battery charger, this should be turned on to keep the batteries topped up.

18
www.tingdeneboating.com

LET YOUR BOAT BREATHE

Ventilation

In short, there should be moving air always circulating throughout your whole boat over the winter months. An unventilated boat will trap moisture, so ensuring there is ventilation over winter is essential to keep down damp. Creating a good through-draught circulating around your boat will help, so leave a couple of window hoppers open for air flow to stop mould and mildew growing. Store all linens and clothing ashore, open all drawers and cupboards, and prop your fridge door open too as mould can grow if left shut.

Avoid blocking any low-level vents around the vessel.

PUT YOUR HEATER TO BED

Instant water heaters

Instant water heaters should be drained using the drain plug, then leave the plug out with a bowl under the outlet and leave the thermostat control on maximum.

FULLY CHARGED

Diesel heaters

If your boat has a diesel heater with a frost stat, you should ensure that you have a full tank of diesel and very good batteries. If you have access to electricity and have a marine battery charger, connect to the shoreline so that batteries do not go flat.

Do not rely on mains electricity to keep your batteries topped up

KEEPING IT ELECTRIC

Electric heaters

Running a small heater with a thermostat can be very beneficial for your boat to keep the boat temperature from dropping below zero. Always ensure electrical supply can’t be interrupted, with suitable electric breakers to cope, and appliances are trustworthy.

The recommended heater is a greenhouse ‘tube’ heater, which are very low wattage. Do not use fan heaters, bar heaters, gas heaters, or any heater that has exposed elements. Heaters are the number one cause of fires on boats, and they may invalidate your insurance if they are found to be the cause of a fire.

Do not rely on mains electricity to keep your craft from freezing. Electric heaters should always be used with caution.

KEEPING THE PEACE

Smoke & CO 2 alarms

Smoke & CO2 alarms should have the batteries removed if you are not on the craft. During the winter months, it is prohibited for alarms to be going off onboard a vessel on any Tingdene Marina due to flat batteries in alarm systems.

KNOWING THE ROPES Mooring lines & ropes

Check all mooring lines for chafing or wear and if they are worn, they should be replaced. Please refrain from using the whole 10 metres of line on a mooring tee to secure your craft, as this will cause problems if we need to loosen your ropes due to water levels, wind, or snapped ropes.

KEEPING IT COVERED Collapsing covers

Unless you are storing your boat indoors, you should always cover it. Sadly, no cover is immune to the effects of the battering wind and the weight of snow during winter, even the shrink-wrap kind. If the cover collapses your boat will be exposed to the winter weather. The only way to guard against this issue is to check the cover regularly. If you find the cover has failed, then you will have only days’ worth of damage to deal with rather than months if left unchecked.

KEEPING THE COGS MOVING General engine maintenance

General engine cleaning and monitoring should be high on your priority list, but is best done under the experienced responsibility of a boat engineer. They will check all the way around and underneath all of the workings, particularly all elements of the exhaust, change the oil filters and coolant and dry the bilges off completely to prevent corrosion. If you need the details of your local services to help you with this, please contact your marina who will be happy to help.

THE TIME IS NOW Preparation

Preparation is key! You should not leave these actions until the last minute. Give yourself plenty of time to make your action list well before the cold weather arrives. To ensure that your boat is ready for hibernation you should prepare well in advance. Prevention is most definitely better than cure!

Please be aware that this list is not exhaustive and does not guarantee that frost damage may not occur.

WE ARE HERE TO HELP

Please contact your marina for help on anything in this article. They will be able to advise if any of the actions can be completed by the marina on your behalf before any winter damage is possibly caused and will also have extensive lists of boat services that can help you in your local area.

This article is to simply advise, so please contact a boat engineer if you require further technical information regarding winterisation.

If you are passing, be sure to drop into the marina office, and give him a little encouragement by way of a cuddle as he continually takes on the role of Chief of Pest Control! But there may be a queue, he has hundreds of pictures taken with guests every year, he even rides the ferry from time to time. A true local A-lister we can call our own!

Perfectly placed to enjoy Norfolk and Suffolk, Waveney Marina is home to some of the most stunning scenery the Broads has to offer. Set in the beautiful surroundings of the Waveney Valley, the Marina is perfectly placed to enjoy the quiet life. A place you can escape to, to savour uninterrupted views across the river and marshes, and revel in the authenticity of the birds, wildlife and the winding rivers.

The Broads is England’s largest wetland, with over 125 miles of waterways to discover. From Beccles and Geldeston to Hickling and Stalham, there are riverside pubs and restaurants, landmarks and nature reserves in abundance to explore, and all are easily reachable from the marina.

Waveney Marina is also neighbour to two other Tingdene Marinas; Broadlands Marina and Brundall Bay Marina. As an annual berth holder, you can enjoy 28 nights free mooring here or at any of our ten marinas, so with the three being so close, it is the perfect opportunity to extend your Broads adventure. Take a look on pages 6 and 7 at all of the benefits available to you as a member of the Tingdene Privilege Loyalty Scheme.

As we know, pubs and restuarants are important to boaters. After all, there’s nothing better than a deliciously cooked hot meal and a tipple or two after a day of boating with friends and family! 'The Waveney Inn' is Waveney Marinas waterside pub and does not disappoint. The newly refurbished pub offers a menu of reasonably priced and locally-sourced food that is freshly prepared and cooked on the premises. A huge hit with our current berth holders and locals alike. Take a short stroll from your boat and enjoy a relaxing meal while overlooking the beautiful marina and watch the world go by. Perfection!

BLACKOUT 8 WAYS TO SAVE ENERGY ONBOARD YOUR VESSEL

The news of the rising cost of living, particularly the ever-increasing energy costs is affecting everyone. We have compiled a list of helpful tips to help you save energy on board your boat and keep money in your pocket.

24 www.tingdeneboating.com
25 www.tingdeneboating.com

MULTI-TASKING

Charge devices on the go. Use your boats’ alternator and avoid draining the leisure batteries completely.

KEEPING COOL

Using a refrigerator can be the largest consumer of electricity on board your boat, up to 30-60 amp hours per day. You can improve the efficiency of the appliance cheaply and quickly with using closed cell foam blocks to fill open gaps, thus cooling a smaller space, and using less energy. Always check your seals around the door to ensure they are in good condition too.

GETTING TECHNICAL

Being savvy to the amount of energy consumed by the products you buy and use could save you considerable amounts of energy on everyday items, with just a quick bit of research. Pay special attention to second hand items and anything that you know you use a lot and question if is worth trading it in for a more efficient version or using it less.

LIGHT IT UP

Installing LED lights to replace traditional interior lighting and navigation lighting is a simple swap that can save up to 10-amp hours per day on a small boat, and up to triple that on larger boats.

With LED lights being quite pricey, you can always replace those you use most and work through your boat at your own pace.

GO BACK TO BASICS

Do you really need it? Although having entertainment at our finger tips may make our life easier and more interesting, this is not always essential. Combined, they can absorb a considerable amount of energy, so consider manual equivalents and going back to the ‘good old days’ of board games, reading, putting pen to paper, and wrapping up and getting outside to enjoy your Marina's local walks and sights.

THINK TWICE

It may seem like a very obvious one, but day-to-day mishaps often add up. Try and change your mind-set to thinking about whether you will need the light or plug socket after use, swap the extractor fan for opening a window, and try reducing shower times. These slight changes to your thought process can save energy quickly.

INVEST WHERE BEST

Invest in a Pure Sine Wave Inverter for higher powered appliances, like microwaves and fans. This is not only more efficient, but the damage of sensitive equipment is dramatically reduced.

CHARGED UP

Using a USB is a very energy-efficient way to charge your devices, so opt for this method when on board over using an inverter. If you are a frequent laptop user, a 12v charger dedicated to laptop use are very efficient too. You can also remove your laptop battery until the engine is running, to avoid using the leisure battery unnecessarily.

DON'T FORGET! OUR MARINA STAFF ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO ADVISE IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR NEED HELP WITH SAVING ENERGY ON BOARD YOUR VESSEL

FESTIVE EGGNOG

A perfectly traditional festive drink to enjoy with friends and family this Christmas that can be prepared ahead of time. Or make fresh on the day and skip adding any alcohol if you prefer a virgin tipple.

INGREDIENTS

6 medium free-range eggs, separated

150g/5½ oz golden caster sugar

500ml/18fl oz whole milk

400ml/14fl oz double cream

350ml/12fl oz rum or bourbon (or a mix of both)

Freshly grated nutmeg, to taste

METHOD

Whisk the egg yolks in a bowl with 100g/3½ oz of the caster sugar until the mixture is pale yellow and thick (this is best done with an electric handheld mixer).

Stir in the milk, double cream, and the rum and/or bourbon. You can add a little grated nutmeg to taste too.

Pour the mixture into two 750ml/1½ pint bottles with stoppers and store in the fridge for up to two weeks. (The alcohol will prevent any spoilage of the eggs or cream. Make fresh if not adding alcohol.)

Place the egg whites in a box and freeze until ready to serve the egg nog.

When ready to serve, defrost the egg whites into a clean metal or glass bowl. Using a handheld electric mixer, whisk the egg whites until foamy and opaque. Add the remaining 50g of sugar and whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form when the whisk is removed.

Pour the egg nog from the bottles into a large bowl and fold in the egg whites until well combined. Ladle the egg nog into glass tumblers and serve with freshly grated nutmeg over the top of each glass and some festive decorations

Cheers!
