WHERE TO GO Boating on the Severn is both leisurely and peaceful with access to the coast at Sharpness, miles of river cruising from Gloucester Docks to Stourport and entry to the River Avon, including the Avon Ring at Tewkesbury. More canal systems at Worcester and Stourport lead into the beautiful English countryside. What a choice, the coast, the river or the canal! STRATFORD-UPON-AVON CANAL Length: 25.5 miles from Kings Norton to Stratford Locks: 54 Max dimensions: Length 70ft Beam 7ft Draught 2ft 6ins Height 6ft The Stratford is a fascinating little canal. The subject of another renowned restoration, the southern section was opened by the Queen Mother in 1964. The canal has its own beauty, being completely rural. Features include the barrel-shaped lock cottages and the split bridges to allow the tow-rope through. Stratfordupon-Avon is at the bottom end, which makes it a very popular cruising canal and well worth a visit. Despite the number of boats, the canal basin allows you to moor right opposite the Shakespeare Theatre.
STAFFORDSHIRE & WORCESTERSHIRE CANAL Length: 46 miles Locks: 43 Max dimensions: Length 70ft Beam 7ft Draught 2ft 6ins Height 6ft 6ins Joining the River Severn at the bustling Stourport basin, this canal climbs up to Wolverhampton, passing through rolling countryside on its completely rural route. Kidderminster is the terminus of the Severn Valley Steam Railway, which makes a good day trip away from the boat.
STOURBRIDGE CANAL 9 Length: 5.75 miles Locks: 20 Max dimensions: Length 70ft Beam 7ft Draught 2ft 6ins Height 6ft
WORCESTER & BIRMINGHAM CANAL Length: 30 miles from Birmingham to the River Severn Locks: 58 Max dimensions: Length 70ft Beam 7ft Draught 2ft 6ins Height 6ft
Stourbridge canal is a short canal linking the Staffordshire & Worcestershire canal to the Birmingham Canal Navigations. As you work your way up a string of locks, you pass some of the few remaining glassworks which were formerly a major industry in this area. A trip to the local museum and shop is recommended.
One of Birmingham’s routes to the sea, the Worcester & Birmingham Canal is mainly rural, except for its section out of the city. The cathedral city of Worcester at its western end is an attractive historic town; here the canal joins the River Severn, forming part of the Warwickshire ring.
