To avoid injuries or damage to any person or property, please follow these simple precautions:
• Ensure your barbecue is of sound quality, regularly inspecting for loose or damaged parts that may render it unfit for use.
• Be aware of the location. Always use barbecues outdoors, ensuring they are sited at least 2 metres from any building, structure, holiday home, shrubbery or foliage. They should not be sited on camping furniture or grass.
• Ensure the barbecue is sited on a stable flat surface (using a stand or bricks) and is well away from all flammable items.
• Never light or use a barbecue in an enclosed or confined space. The user and others must be able to move freely around the barbecue without putting themselves or others a risk.
• Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby to extinguish after use and for in case of emergencies.
• Keep children and pets well away from the cooking area.
• Keep loose clothing away from the barbecue and keep hair tied back.
• Never pour petrol, methylated spirit or other accelerants on to a barbecue. Only use recognised fire lighters or starter fuels and only on cold coals; use the minimum necessary and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.
• Remain in control and be responsible at all times – do not consume alcohol when in charge of a barbecue.
• Particular care should be taken in hot, dry weather to reduce the risk of a fire starting.
• Prepare the barbecue early to ensure it is at the right temperature by the time you want to cook.
• Use appropriate long-handled utensils.
• Never leave the barbecue unattended.
• Remember that the metal parts of a barbecue can become hot; don’t try to move it until it has cooled down.
• Never take a barbecue inside - a cooling barbecue gives off high quantities of poisonous carbon monoxide which can be extremely dangerous.
• Use only enough charcoal to cover the base to a depth of about 50mm (two inches).
• If you are using a disposable barbecue, ensure it has cooled for at least 5 hours (from lighting) before disposing of it in the designated barbecue disposal bin located on park (please refer to the park map). You should pour water over the barbecue to make sure it is completely extinguished before disposing of it.
• Used charcoals should be left to cool and disposed of in the same manner as disposable barbecues.
• Disposable barbecues take longer to heat up.
• Do not overload your barbecue – cook with patience. When using coals, make sure the flames have receded before cooking commences.
• Cooking on flames will only char the outside of the meat and not cook it evenly.
• Consider cooking chicken and pork in the oven prior to giving it a final ‘finish’ on your barbecue.
• Frozen food should always be thawed properly before being cooked.
• Keep raw and cooked foods separate.
• Don’t allow uncooked meat to sit in the sun.
• Do not eat any meat that is still pink. Meat juices should run clear; one indication the food is ready to eat. Meat should be steaming hot throughout.
