Orientation

The overall architectural form is inherited from the local shipyard structure. The vernacular element defines the language. Seven major concrete structural bearing walls are fanning out from the highland at the back to lower point in the front. Programmes are sandwiched in between the walls and created a tunnel-like visual effect with strong directional focal point of view from the rock to the sea.

Overall orientation is rotated 35° anti-clockwise to align with the diagonal relationship with the sea in northwest to the mountain in southeast. Second, the specific orientation allows the daylight come across the mountain to the building platform for sunbathing. Moreover, third, for the sake of passive ventilation, it creates the tunnel for natural air from the harbour flowing into the major building blocks.

The three structural walls will be materialised with grey granite. Then it will be added on rough chiseled texture by secondary finishing. The wall symbolised the historical legacy of local quarry industry originated from A Kung Ngam in period 1870s to 1970s. For the remaining walls, smooth white granite finishing will also be applied to unify the language.

Programme This project consists two major communal programmes: swimming pool and cinema. Dry and wet programmes are articulated by the division of the major circulation tunnel on the diagonal axis. Programmes are connected and integrated between the flying platform from spectator stand to mini black boxes with clear hierarchy of private and public, dry and wet. During the nighttime, longitudinal wall aligning with the pool the spectator stand will also be the projection screen for cinema which can accommodate more than 300 audience. Structure Entire building is built by concrete core as seven longitudinal slabs. The slabs are structural load bearing members. Concrete beams are decked for the roof structure to resist the lateral force. The span of the beams ranged from 30m to 3m. Sec-

ondary decking as finishing are placed in between the beams. The envelope is applied with frosted glass panels which is non-structural members but help protecting the privacy and control the amount of direct light into the pool and the cinema.

"You can never have such special experience like this --- watching movie on swimming pool’s spectator stand. And this is what we do every week. After taking my grandson to school, my fellow old friends and I have a short walk along the promenade and turn into our new favourite time-killing place --- the new swimming centre. It is showing the movie in 70s or 80s that we enjoyed watching as a child. A black and white cantonese drama in swimming pool? What a brilliant idea!" --- John, An old neighbour Perspective

Retro Movie Night

"This is Friday night. I am so tired after whole week of work. I usually go drinking and dancing to get myself relaxed. Bars and clubs were my favourite but now I go to the new centre just next to my apartment few blocks away. On the upperhill, under the quarry rock of A Kung Ngam, people will gather there for movie, drink and dance. It is our new community place. Far enough from the town centre that you won’t bother other people. Close enough for people like us living nearby to have a moment of simply joy and cheers. Today’s theme is retro night. I better dress up my vintage skirt and meet my friends now." --- Elaine, Girl from the neighbourhood NIGHT, 7-10PM

This is an experimental proposal of integrating traditional locality (old street) with modern context (new city centre). The existence of surrounding high-rise is rigid but indifferent to the community. In contrast, ‘7th Street’ is a low-rise design with contextual awareness which drastically anchoring with the surrounding ‘context-less’ context.

SITE LOCATION PLAN 1:3000

Orientation and Intention The project focuses on balancing the imbalanced situation of the site. It is located in 7th Redevelopment Zone of Taichung City which surrounded by numbers of luxurious, residential high-rises. The project takes up a role of transitional point of the area by reintroducing the traditional Taichung streetscape. It creates an immediate change betweendifferent aspects, activities and, if not, the difference between social classes. It is the transitional space from the commercial blocks at the

10m

back to the public spaces, and to aesthetic, cultural participation It shows the opportunity of providing a quality of living while respecting locality and revitalizing traditional elements. To realize the streetscape, different urban typography is analyzed, redesigned and further applied in the design ranging from condition, section, structure, faรงade, and spatial articulation. Therefore, numbers of traditional chinese garden round shaped enclosures are used as the major element in building faรงade.

This project is not only about making a better place to live while respecting locality through the means of architecture. It is also about making a critical challenge to the emotionless and apparative high-rises, disconnected and fragmentized community, and even to the ubiquitious urban and housing conditions. This could hopefully open up the debate on the appropiateness and legitimacy of modernism housing. Facade Design

Project 03 / The Lane / Studio U3 / CUHK / 2016

Project Detail Site: Sai Ying Pun, HK Programme: Collective Housing GFA: ~5800m2 Status: Studio Project, U3 Community in Lane. Sai Ying Pun, a historical district full of locality and spirits is, however, blatantly, in the shortage of community space. The new housing project is designed for local domestic helper and their families, and, for the local community.

21

Orientation Considered the circulation, ventilation of the area and the life style of user group, local domestic helper, there is a void of lane created along two residential blocks. The lane is a rising slope according to the contour covering a difference of 8 meters of altitude. Therefore, the lane creates a less physical demanding and environmental appealing alternative for people getting to the upper hill area.

for people to interact, to walk, to wander, to take a moment of rest after a long working day. Every apartments are stacked and interlocked with each other to create an imitation to the typology of surrounding Tonglau and to create different level of interaction. Ventilated circulation staircase is imposed on both side of the blocks. Two blocks of residential units are raised above the collective space with 1.5 meters’ difference to ensure privacy In between the blocks, there is a community space for residents.

Project 03 / The Lane / Studio U3 / CUHK / 2016

Programme and Articulation Concept of the collective area is ‘Share and Equality’. Psychologically speaking, local domestic helpers enjoy sharing and collaboration with neighborhood. On lower ground, it is composed with a playground, a cooperate shop and a reading corner. In between, there is an ascending double height (6m) multifunctional hall as the new community complex. On upper ground, the platform

and lane area is programmed to be bartar market and performance space. On rooftop, there is a cooperate garden for urban farming, and, a screening wall for movie show. In short, the cooperate garden, community complex and the lane area form a restless cycle which include physically and intellectual engagement of residents' participation in community.

Modular Permutation Unit layout is composed by the psychological values of the sense of belonging and sense of collective whole for local family. For the prior, there are 16 different unit orientation with 4 major types of layout. Each unit is spatially different and unique

which creates a sense of belonging in spatial perception. For the latter, dinning and kitchen area is oriented as the centre core of unit. An open kitchen allows internal interaction within family member and increase their sense of achievement.

RAINBOWLAND A Dream comes True: A Practical and Economical Design on Learning Centre

Project Detail Site: Fanling, HK Programme: Institution, Community Hall GFA: ~230m2 Status: Competition Project (winning scheme, to be built in 2019) Credits: Precious Blood Learning Centre Design and Tender Team

In Bible, Rainbow has a special meaning, that it symbolises a dialogue about a promise made between the God and human. The idea of our project is to bring the sisters and children together under the big colourful shelter, and to recall their relationship with the God. The dynamic shift of our project creates a certain degree of openess to the outside, and through the colourful openings on the roof, sunlight as the cre-

ation of god is being drawn in and reinterpreted into different colours, and the colour of light changes in the course of a day, a season and a year. The interactive play of sunlight, interior and exterior space hopes to provide a stable yet ever changing atmosphere of environment to the sisters and children, establishing dialogues between the god and the his creation - the Nature.
