Why is the cultural belongingness diminishing? And How can we (re)create the Culture in New Town? Gradient City is interrogating the issues on the disappearance of cultural identities in Hong Kong New Town since 1990s, the third generation of Satellite Cities. On Cultural Political viewpoint, the proposal is questioning the existing Cultural Policies Pyramid and the conventional typology of Municipal Buildings. On Urban viewpoint, the proposal is challenging the trend of Megablock City and pondering on the problem of Dead Open Spaces in New Town.

VEILED SUBTOPIA THE URBAN PLACEBO AN UNDERGROUND HEALING CENTRE

02

Sham Shui Po, HK Detox Clinic x Rehab Centre x Mental Health Factory ~500m2 Studio Project, 2020 Supervised by Patrick HWANG, Cheng Chun

The project consists of two heritage buildings, at the front, Chinese Public Dispensary built in 1933, and at the back, KwanTai Temple built in 1891. Behind the clinic there is a Chinese temple situated diagonally. The interlocking coordination creates a different geometrical relationship with the orthogonal surroundings which are basically composed by blocks of traditional tenement houses. We can see the healing feature of the context could be traced over a century of history, either physical or mental. 9

THE CONTINUATION OF HISTORICAL USE To carry on its healing mission, the clinic would be transformed into a mental health centre in referencing the Maggie’s Centre founded by Charles Jencks in 1995 who believed in the Architectural Placebo Effect which the aesthetic value of architecture could actually help soothing people’s sorrows and pains. On top of that, the ornamental elements with all the art deco features will be preserved for the aesthetic appeals.

Physical Healing

Psychological Healing

"When One is Veiled, Another is Unveiled."

Maggie Centre (Mixed Healing)

10

WHAT IS VEILED COULD BE UNVEILED IN THE DEEPEST URBAN "EXCAVATION SITE".... In this healing centre, spaces are free planned and less determined, the counsellor, the therapists and social workers, will be scattered across the centre, there are no constraints or designated areas for counselling because everywhere is possible for everything. Whenever one is feeling free to talk, the counsellor will unveil themselves and approach for help, otherwise, one may also stay solitude to appreciate the beauty of shadow and light, the breeze coming from the voids, the shades of tree, the reflection of water and the feeling of being inclusive by the place, as if the perception on this Subtopia, this underground, is their second home, a home away from home. Building a new ground beneath the old one, the veiled Subtopia is not only a factory of healing, but an urban placebo, a place for people to sooth and talk, and re-discovering themselves through the process of meditation, counselling, reconnecting themselves with the place, time and architecture. A place dedicated and belongs to them.

Both devine and despotic are transformed into stacks of semeiotic meanings under the subterranean surface. SAVING THE HOLLOW VILLAGE is a common phenomenon in rural areas of China. The indigenous people of the entire village have moved to the new rural residential areas. Their homesteads are still there, the old houses are ruined, and none of them is willing to revitalise the countryside. While aiming to realise a public yet private community through juxtaposing the ancient fashion of living with the modern idea of connectivity, alongside the agrestal locality of Yu County. Via exploring the organic way of living, we are aiming to establish the potential cohesive bondage between that and the modern ways of living.

IN ARTICULATING THE MURAL OF THE RURAL The point grid, who punctuates the constructional erections, populates and sets the tones and restraints for the imminent idyll. The derivation of him, the plot (4x6m), is coming from the formerly-peopled dwellings and will be cradling the freshly grown rurality. With the re-interpreted dwellings paving the blanket, chants come into play. Grottoshaped overpass along with the velvety ripples, swimming through the inherited landscape. They have been choreographing the nature and the man-made, while all of this is seeking to mirage an aperspectival mural.

INFORMALITY IN FORMALITY The formalistic outcome of the dwellings being a rationalised cavern with scents of collective randomness. The vernacular element defines the language. Seven major concrete structural bearing walls are fanning out from the highland at the back to lower point in the front. Programmes are sandwiched in between the walls and created a tunnel-like visual effect with strong directional focal point of view from the rock to the sea.

"A Theatre for Dreamers” Hong Kong’s has always been an unique city of extreme, full of hustle and bustle. With the city’s unstoppable momentum, Hongkongers gradually lose their retreat of personal time, especially in the latest work-from-home lifestyle. Hence, we believe cinema remains as one of the best retreat for emotional release, to pacify the senses, to dream a little whilst immersing in the narrative of movies…

The profound concept is to create a unique experience which juxtapose people in between the boundaries of retail and arts, shopping mall and museum. The interactive and transformable store environment provides a haven to customers of all ages, with flexibility catered to sustain the fast-paced retail landscape. Many local elements have been incorporated in homage to our cultural heritage as part of the aesthetics. To name a few: the use of bamboo and galvanized zinc, the mobile chess-piece-like fixtures inspired by mah-jong tables, and fixtures inspired by the dim sum trolleys. The reinterpretation of traditional elements helps evoking a sense of familiarity and belongingness for Hongkongers while inspiring an international audience.

32

The spirits of Hong Kong branch is all about adaptability and flexibility which pay a tribute to local identity. The dim sum trolleys are inspired by the vigorous adaptability and mobility of traditional ones here in Hong Kong. The bespoke book shelf, which duals as a furniture wall, is a statement piece converging the best of the MoMA identity and local practicality. The incorporated seating space for readers is a twist on the tight seating in local cafes – the cha chaan teng.

33

06

The movable fixtures allowed the transformation of the layout in order to adapt different events and programmes. Ranging from large, medium to small, the transformable planning created various scenarios for different time, day, and season. ALL fixtures and furnitures in the store are designed with removable and changeable feature which maximized the greatest amount of flexibility in this every changing commercial forest.

While the shop keeper takes some degree of control over the form of his/her newsstand, the eventual outcome (of the form) will be greatly influenced by each users participating in the newsstand.

In order to keep up with the rapid changing pace of the modern city. The newsstand of the future should pocess the ability to adapt and change in time. Research Museum of Gaze: What is the Reality of Edward Hopper, 2020

This research aims to interrogate the paradoxical complexity of subjectivity and objectivity between the interrelationship of the gazing subject and the object being gazed. The virtual museum was an embodiment of the dissolution process of body images with the appropriation of Edward Hopper’s artworks. The artworks were particularly selected for its ambience of tranquillity and solitary within the condition of urban settlements. Through the dissolving body images, the subject (audience / visitor) was enabled to submerge into the virtual environment of the artwork. The immersion allowed people to question the alienation and isolation of modern society. The loneliness was strengthened under the pandemic situation in reality which further reinforced the coherence and fuzziness between reality and the second reality. The journey was scripted according to the first hand experience of Foucault’s experience on Las Meninas by objectifying the subjects in the painting without preposition and prejudice on the particular expression on particular space or time. Therefore, the script of the journey was intended refraining from a descriptive transcript on history, context or background but the phenomenological bodily experience.

Too bright it was that no one ever gets close to it. No one knows. No one dares to question the abnormal substantial existence of the dome, as if it was a normal norm.
