Message from President Action are a motivation and force to let our members “Go Beyond”. Relationship and Recognition can enhance our members bonding and belonging, then it will “Light up your passion” to create more impact and positive change to everyone around you. Empowerment is an opportunity for our members to practice their leadership from “Grit to Great”, and finally they will turn to “Empowered Leaders, Empower Leaders”.

It was my primary school motto and it is always in my mind. From teenager to now, I have always taken different opportunities to serve as a volunteer from various organizations to benefit our community. Thank you JCI Tsuen Wan brothers and sisters allowed me to take this opportunity to serve as President of JCI Tsuen Wan, to create impact, create positive change and create a better would to our community with my board of directors of 2021.

Taking this opportunity, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all interviewer, sponsors and supporting organizations especially our National President Senator Winnie Yeung to let us interview her with BNI Hong Kong National Director Stanley Kong. I would also extend my appreciation to Publication Team Gilbert Sun and Tobe Wong for arranging all the interview, editing and design of “Talk of Tsuen Wan”.

JCI Tsuen Wan was established in 2013, we created a number of successful projects such as “Nothing but Coffee”, “Yoga on the green”, our flagship projects “Outstanding Family Business Selection” and “Children’s Play Rights”... etc. In the coming 8th year, we will enhance the impact created by those projects, we will overcome all the challenges to create opportunities to empower our members to create positive change.

I believe that, with all the support from National Officers, Local Chapters, Sponsors, Supporting Organizations and fellow JCI Tsuen Wan brother and sisters, JCI Tsuen Wan will go even further and make greater achievements.

Care for Ambition is the theme of JCI Tsuen Wan in 2021, we care by lifting members to achieve ambitious goals. CARE is also a word that combines with 4 letters. Community and Communication is an essential tool for members to connect our community, to know more about our community and to benefit our community and finally can benefit our members to “Expand Horizon”. Ambition and

Message from National President

Ambition is enthusiasm with a purpose. It is the parent of all organizations, and the cause of all improvement. However, being ambitious isn't enough. Far more important than ambition is commitment. The pandemic has changed so many things in our life. While many people in Hong Kong are anxiously awaiting a return to normal, JCI Tsuen Wan has been doing everything they can with care and commitment to make things happen in the “new normal. "Empowered Leaders Empower Leaders" is the theme of JCI Hong Kong this year. Not only do we have to believe that we can do it, it is equally important to help people around us to believe that they can do it. This is what empowerment is all about—believing in others more than they believe in themselves.

4

JCI empowered us so that we can work together with our partners and take action to empower young people during difficult times. And in the process of empowering others, we are also becoming a better version of ourselves. I am confident that under the leadership of President Calvin, together we would achieve ambitious goals and empower more young leaders in 2021.

ture more future leaders. These also echo JCI Hong Kong’s slogan “Empowered Leaders, empower leaders”.

“Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.” Quoted from John Maxwell. This is one of my favorite leadership quotes that I would like to share with you. Becoming a leader, it takes courage and time to overcome numerous hurdles and become a better version of yourself.

It is my honor to serve as National Assigned Executive Office of JCI Tsuen Wan and address the first issue of 荃說. I am more than happy to listen to you, walk with you and standby you in 2021! Let’s care for ambition!

This year, “Care for Ambition” is the core theme of JCI Tsuen Wan. Empowering your members by care and support them in achieving their goals through leading meaningful projects and members’ engagement activities. Under the devoted leadership of President Calvin and his board of directors, let us look forward to their dedication in leading JCI Tsuen Wan and nur-

JCI Tsuen Wan has made very close relation by visiting each other at JCI Tsuen Wan’s fifth anniversary at 2018, 2019 ASPAC luncheon, 2019 JCI Jayakarta’s Business Summit and fifth anniversary; and hopefully we can make bigger project in the future by assimilating JCI Tsuen Wan’s CARE for Ambition campaign with RISE of the Jayakarta that may bring more values to our members.

Greetings Jaycees! On behalf of JCI Jayakarta, I would like to congratulate on JCI Tsuen Wan 2021 Board of Director inauguration and may under the lead of my brother, President Calvin Chan, JCI Tsuen Wan may set another milestone on reaching new set of goals.

Finally, I wish the best of luck for JCI Tsuen Wan 2021 Board of Director, may yourleadership bring memorable legacies for years to come.

Last year was a challenging period for us as we had to adapt to the new habit that affects our life entirely from personal, business and how the organization works itself; eventually we managed to shift most our routines to more digital means, so does the member meeting as well. JCI Jayakarta and JCI Tsuen Wan managed to do joint project last year through online platform such as cross chapter member bonding, seminars about international visit as well as keeping update on each other’s projects. For the last 3 years JCI Jayakarta and

the leverage of youth and business professional power

Interview with BNI National Directors

Stanley Kong & Stella Yung Business Network International (BNI), is a business and professional networking organization whose primary purpose is to exchange qualified business referrals. It connects businessmen and professionals along with different industry sectors, through advice, referral, training and education, it optimizes the resources for the member’s business. Currently the organisation has over 270,000 small to large business members in over 9,400 chapters across 70 countries. For decades, both BNI and JCI have been committed to supporting businesses, connecting community leaders and professionals, and providing premiere and networking opportunities to each other. On 4 August 2020, BNI Global and JCI World announced a formalized partnership working to support global business leaders in boosting local and global economies worldwide. BNI Hong Kong is one of the national chapters from 70 countries of BNI Global likewise JCI Hong Kong from JCI World. BNI Hong Kong has consecutively been in the

14

top 10 for 8 years from thousands of local affiliates BNI in terms of membership size. Since 2006, BNI Hong Kong has already expanded to 67 chapters across the national board. The director, the manager and the members from BNI HK are doing extremely well in recent years where their leadership is recognised worldwide. Among the top management, Mr Stanley Kong and Ms Stella Yung, the National Directors and the founders of BNI Hong Kong, had been partnered and led the organisation for more than 15 years. Thanks to their unremitting efforts, the current number of BNI members in Hong Kong and in the China mainland exceeds 6,500; in 2019, there were more than 356,000 of referrals generated among the members, and more than 7 billion business transaction turnover had been swiped. This time, it is our honor to invite Stanley and Stella to be our interviewees for this edition of “Talks of Tsuen Wan to share their stories behind BNI, the thought behind JCI x BNI and their advice to the youth during the pandemic.

metic company, was developed from a small branch to having 4 factories and 1000 retail points by date, where most of my upstream and downstream, suppliers, wholesalers and retailers were introduced from referral. So I think it would be an advantage to have this referral system and implement it in Hong Kong where the first chapter of BNI HK was born in the year of 2006.

Why do you bring BNI to Hong Kong and how you founded BNI HK? Stanley: Since 1995 I started up my own business. With my 10 years of business experience, I understand that doing business is difficult, the chance of failure for entrepreneurship is very high, about 80% of enterprises would disappear or bankrupt within 2 to 3 years from startup. Meanwhile, I have a lot of friends who are businessmen. I was thinking about how to help them. On an occasional event, I met a member from Malaysia and he brought me to the BNI Malaysia and joined their meeting. In that morning session, I was so surprised by their efficiency where 30 of the members can bring back up to 70 business referrals. At that moment, I think Hong Kong must acquire this platform because it can help a lot of professionals and businessmen, so I founded BNI HK in Hong Kong.

How do you feel about the partnership between BNI Global and JCI world that has been established since the announcement on 4th August 2020? Stanley: I was very happy when the partnership of BNI and JCI established. During the 90s, I was already invited by JCI City to become an advisor so I deeply know how JCI works. JCI was a platform that helped the youth to build personal development as well as helping the communities. I hope this partnership can help both the entrepreneur and the youth to become more successful.

Stella: Recall back when I and Stanley visited BNI Malaysia in 2005, we did not have any idea about BNI. But after I joined their meeting, I was very interested in their referral system. Originally my own family business, a cos-

nounced to partner with another organisation or NGO in 35 years. We were always encouraged by BNI Global founder Dr. Ivan Misner that BNI members should not only stay in BNI, but to find one or two more networks to expand their own connection. Additionally, Stanley and myself always think we should encourage more young entrepreneurs and businessmen in Hong Kong, where we can return value and serve for the community through the partnership with JCI .

Any comments you want to give advice to the youth and JCI members under the hard situation under Covid-19? Stanley: This is an especially challenging period. I wish the businessmen can generate more business revenue so he/she can have the power to create more job availability for the young adults. In another angle of perspective, young adults shall preserve a positive attitude because the pandemic will ultimately finish someday. Whether they want to be a professional in the job market or become an entrepreneur, I think now is a good time to reconsider their direction. I believe that either BNI or JCI can give them a lot of resources, relations and thoughts for them to grow and grab the opportunities.

In the near future, how do you think JCI Hong Kong and BNI Hong Kong should collaborate together? Stanley: We are currently referencing the coop between overseas BNI and JCI examples, where BNI and JCI members can crossover for the activities and do speech together.

Stella: I think if you are a young one who wants to do business, you never know when the pandemic will end, so we need to continuously equip ourselves, and find more methods to expand the connection. Besides capital assets, connection is a very important element to do the business. If the young can utilize their connection resource, they can leverage out more on business succession.

Stella: I once participated in one of the JCI activities, I think BNI and JCI should hold more activities together in the Business Affairs, training session and Network Expansion areas.

Group Photo during interview From left to right: Senator Nelson Lin, President Calvin Chan, BNI National Director Stella Yung, BNI National Director Stanley Kong, National President Senator Winnie Yeung, National Executive Vice President Kelvin Lam, Vice President Gilbert Sun

During the talk with Stanley and Stella, I can feel their passion on creating paths for youth to do business and rebuild economies and strengthen the workforce together. They always illustrated that BNI has never been recruiting members, but leaders. “If the boss in business wants the company to grow bigger and bigger, he has to learn how to become a true leader. Successful leaders can often lead followers to the peak and overcome obstacles” they emphasized. I can see from their motto and leadership, Stanley and Stella now have the abilities to influence not only hundreds, but thousands of BNI members, which set us an example of “Empower Leader” which coincidence with one of our JC values and I am looking toward to the partnership with BNI, where we can study and learn from their precious experience in entrepreneur perspective.

As illustrated by JCI 2020 World President Itai Manyere, JCI leaders must guide and empower small businesses to rethink and adapt their business models, so that they can thrive under the pandemic difficulties. JCI Tsuen Wan, as a local organisation of Hong Kong, has taken up a first step to understand the needs of our communities best, and investigate how to help out Hong Kong small-mid cap companies and the unemployed to overcome the future challenges. Next up, we will start to investigate stories with small business owners from BNI members Charles and Eldon behind the pandemic. To be continue~

Children’s Play Rights is JCI Tsuen Wan communities development area flagship projects where it was promoted by the United Nation under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Article 31, signed in 1989. It aims to remind and educate parents the importance of PLAY before it’s too late. Play is essential for children’s development on language, analytical and decision-making skills. In 2020 where it was a challenging year, JCI Tsuen Wan continue to serve the childrens and parents to fight the virus together through the program and aim to expand our “Play right” area.

Interviews with Children’s Play experts During the suspension of class, parents need to take care of children themselves. We interviewed Children’s Play experts, Ms. Yoyo Ng, Mr. Louis Huang, Dr. Winnie Wong and Ms Sofia from UNICEF. These interviews have been shared through Children’s Play Rights Facebook page. And the message of promoting the advantages of “Free Play”, teaching the public how and what is “Free Play” and parental role on “Free Play” has been widely spread.

Children’s Play Rights Questionnaire We cooperated with the Hong Kong Playground Association for a questionnaire which aimed at understanding of Children’s “Free Play” situation in Hong Kong. We circulated the questionnaire online and performed street interviews and received more than 600 replies. With deep analysis from Dr Wan, Hong Kong Playground Association, the results of the interview showed that the mental health of children and adolescents was not ideal during the pandemic. Of whom 25.5% of the respondents were troubled by carrying degrees of anxiety and are worthy of attention. 28

Children’s Play Rights you have say “Laughter Laughter” Competition 遊戲權利您有say之『笑聲笑聲最難忘疫境自由遊戲繽紛齊分享相片徵集比賽』 In the peak of the pandemic where the parents and children were restricted to stay at home for social distance, JCI Tsuen Wan launched a campaign called “Children’s playright Laugher Laugher'', aiming to fight their anxiety off and be smiling all the time. Below are some of the awarded pictures for the campaign.

Fighting the COVID-19” Campaign with elderly In support of underprivileged and elderly under the COVID-19 epidemic, we raised a campaign for mask and antivirus material donations. We were delighted to receive numerous sponsors and donations from our members. We packed 500 masks and prepared 500 alcohol-based hand rubs together. These were donated to Windshield Charitable, Christian Ministry to Visually Impaired Persons, benefiting 20 grassroots families and 20 visually impaired persons in Sham Shui Po and Shek Kip Mei.
