A mapping project on Malta’s infrastructural system [waste] + [power] + [water] + [air] explored the intertwining relationship of the undesired environmental issues on the island. The accompanying Crime Investigation Wall is deployed to further delve into the relationship among the local politicians, the two dominant political parties and those major industrial company directors to see how the conflicts and welfare among them affect the infrastructural development in Malta.

From the many cases, Marsa Power Station turned out to be a predominant case for its plenty of pollution problems and political conflicts, despite it has been the main source of electricity for the nation and served the island for the past 61 years until it was officially decommissioned early 2015.

• It was an artillery battery built by Maltese insurgents during the French blockade of 1798-1800. It was located on higher ground.

• The battery was built at the bottom of Jesuit Hill, close to the shoreline. • The battery was small, and consisted of a small masonry parapet with three embrasures, a hardstone gun platform, a sentry room on the left, and a flanking rubble wall on the right. A magazine was also built to the rear of the battery. [Like the other French blockade fortifications, Marsa Battery was dismantled, possibly sometime after 1814. No traces of the battery can be seen today, and the area is now heavily industrialized.]

Mycoremediation is a form of bioremediation, a process that breaks down contaminants using fungi, or more commonly known as mushroom. It is the network of white and fuzzy filaments called mycelium that fruits mushroom. Technically, mycelium produces enzymes that break down long-chained toxins into simpler and less toxic molecules. This technique was founded by an American mycologist, Paul Stamets who has spent nearly 3 decades researching on mushroom. In order to achieve greater results and to obtain a better understanding on mycoremediation, a number of experiments from a simple home growing mushroom kit to more intricate growing process were established. 03

>> By stripping off all the existing entities of the power station and only retaining the skeleton of the turbine hall, a series of intervention was introduced. First, inducing the seawater from the grand harbour to surround the site, a new facade to envelope the building, a series of circulation and a layer of rigs to support the new gadgetry.

>> The skins are composed of a layer of wind veil [with reference to the artist Ned Kahn] on the external facade to imitate the wind movement and keeping the look as minimal as possible. A layer of glazing seals the interior for the machine to operate at an optimal level followed by an internal skin of wind veil.

ABOUT Air pollution has hit an alarming rate in recent times. Birdhouse 2.0 provokes a statement to address this global calamity. Birds, a well known species to man will be the first to fall victim to the depleting air quality. ‘Canaries in a coal mine’ is the best allusion to show how sensitive they are to the poison content in the air. Would birds soon suffer the agony of not living freely in the open environment anymore? That’d mean they are restricted to only spread their wings in a confined territory of a living machine only to preach a glimpse of what their ancestors used to endeavour. Are we, the human race, the contributors to all this catastrophe next in line to suffer the similar consequences?

A nal o g u e | OKTOM AT Using analogue photography, the first exercise was experimented with Lomography Oktomat Film Camera. Within 2.5 seconds, one press on the shutter button results in 8 sequential shots in one 35mm print. Since it was the first time using Oktomat camera, the process is almost aleatoric. The idea was to obtain the results on chance operations. By accident, only 7 prints were obtained from the entire roll of film. Each prints have multiple exposure effects. This resulted in some interesting images.

Time | SPEED Time was recorded during the tracing process on each images. Line qualities, densities and precision were being considered during the exercise. The traced drawings were imported into Illustrator while the recorded time was used in a calculation to generate a digital iteration.

Computation | BLEND OPTIONS A mathematics formula was created to generate a set of number for digital sculpting in Adobe Illustrator. The recorded time was being divided by 8 frames and 2.5 seconds which were the features of the analogue camera used in the first place.

This newly generated number then became the specified distance in the Blend Options. On each images, selected lines/paths were transformed using Blend Options. The gradually distributing lines resulted in a set of 3-dimensional like drawings. The method was again as aleatoric since it was determined by the computation.

001 _ THE PALIMPSEST DRAWING

The palimpsest drawing is a complex mixed-media drawing articulating 6 selected thematic layers of Paphos. The drawing combined, challenged and transcended the conventional architectural regimes of orthographic, axonometric and perspectival representations of space. Various drawing techniques was experimented throughout the project with a combination of different drawing tools. The final idea focused on a 6x4 grid of curated vinyl sleeves.

002 _ THE PALIMPSEST MODEL

One physical object depicting and combining 6 selected thematic layers of Paphos site. Using only vinyl records, a stretch of topographical model was constructed corresponding to the 6x4 grid of vinyl sleeve drawings. The vinyl records were cut, heated, reformed and disposed in the desired configuration along a wooden plinth which made the spine of the model. The triangular pieces represent the buildup region -- shopping mall, residential, uptown; while the fluid piece represents the landscape/terrain/topography - the Fabrica site.

003 _ THE PALIMPSEST FILM

A time-based portrait of the Fabrica site. It was started by creating a storyboard, editing and post-producing a piece of three minutes duration using After Effects. We divided the video into three verses and three choruses. The main focus was to emphasize the contrast between the Fabrica landscape and the surrounding development(shopping mall). Since all images were taken on site using 35mm film, we screened the film showing on each slide. White thick line which was also used in the Palimpsest drawing, run through every frames to distinguish foreground, midground and background.

Building Form + Circulation By creating negative spaces on a solid block following the site boundary, hollow tubes emerge from the main center core as circulation, allowing ‘undetermined’ potential programmes to take place around them.

Programme Configuration Green block and red block are set up as residential and art space respectively. The blocks are configured to suit the surrounding public space and design strategies on site.
