Taiwanese Banquet 10

[Bando] 辦桌

Background When we start the project, we seek for something in common among the three of us. We found out that all of our grandparents were once a part of the traditional banquet custom. However, the skill and knowledge of banquet didn’t pass down to our generation. We realize this is exactly how custom extinguish, so we decided to do something to help keep this culture thrive. “Da Tsai” has the opposite meaning of street food, which is a group of Taiwanese dish used in traditional banquets, these dishes combine food from different colonial cultures and local ingredients. Hence, they are often displayed in a fancy way to fit the festive occasion, therefore tableware used in banquets comes in special form.

11 To us, the most fascinating part about this custom is the dishes, each dish has different meaning according to different occasion, so we decide to design a collection of modern tableware around those dishes.

Product Introduction Banquet Tableware

12

Tableware items We have seven kinds of tableware commonly used in banquets, each are used for different dishes, as follows: 1. Platter: For most dishes with sauce. 2. Oval Plate: Mainly used to serve a whole fish. 3. Small dish: For side dishes or starters. 4. Water plate: For dishes with thickened sauce. 5. Tureen: For savory soup. 6. Sweet soup bowl: For sweet soups. 7. Buddha’s Delight Tureen: For “Buddha’s Delight Soup”.

1.

Problems After our research on every banquet process, we list out three problems. 1. Difficult to gather the remaining food in deeper tableware. 2. After cleansing, tableware are piled up and stored in trays, they aren't fully dried before the next usage. 3. Heavy tableware containing boiling hot dishes for 10 people, is difficult for waiter to serve.

5.

1. Sloped bottom: The sloped bottom collects soup and food on one side, making it easier to scoop up the remains. Featured in: sweet soup bowl, tureen, Buddha’s Delight Tureen

2. The inner petal shaped bulge on the inside: This feature creates gaps between containers, allowing air flow for the water to evaporate even piled up. Featured in: all items

3. Wave-shaped bottom: Allow waiter to pick up tableware easily, also the heightened bottom isolates the heat. It also create gap between platters when piled up. Featured in: all items

Design Concept

14

The Chinese idiom "Blooming Flowers and full moon makes a reunion" ( 花 好 月 圓 人 團 圓 ) describes the joy of togetherness, which perfectly fits the essential quality of Taiwanese banquet. We therefore developed elements around the idiom, and chose Begonia pattern glass and Taiwanese Butterfly Orchid as the inspiration for a pattern design.

15

16

Pattern Design We separate the pattern of Chinese Begonia glass into two parts, floral and radiation, then transform Taiwan Butterfly Orchid for new pattern design.

On each tableware, we apply a pattern to the surface, using sandblasting technique to remove the glaze. Thus create a unique visual effect that corresponds to the way moonlight goes through the floral pattern glass. On deeper object: water plate, sweet soup bowl, tureen, and Buddha’s delight tureen, the pattern is apply on the outside. On platters: platter, oval platter, and little dish, a pattern combination is put on the upper side.

17

18

Process We aim to create a craft piece that could be mass-produced by local factory. Our first version of design is way too difficult to make, after numerous discussion with the manufacturers, we adjust our product into a more practical version. I gained a lot knowledge about porcelain during throughout participate in every step of production, such that most of the final models were hand made by us. We first 3D-Printed out the prototype, than went for discussion with manufacturers in Yingge city. Mold are made in two ways, via CNC milling machine and tradition plaster craftsman, however some of the models are straight ABS prototype with spray paint. To make the lighting effect we want, we laser cut the cutting sheet to remove certain part of glaze with sandblasting technique. Upcycled Chair Umbrella

22

Taiwan is situated in subtropical area, has one of the highest average rainfall in the world. With rainy weather and burning sunlight in most days, it is safe to say that umbrella is an essential object to most Taiwanese. In addition, this project will be presented on an exhibition of afterain design studio, umbrella perfectly fits the brand spirit of the studio. Therefore I chose umbrella as my object in this upcycled chair project. I found the bone structure of umbrella fascinating, yet the most beautiful part is always covered, only the user can sometimes admire its beauty. When using, umbrella provides a shelter, but the spread bone structure also keep one from another. Hence, my concept is to bring out the beauty by exposing the bone structure, and to draw near one another by making umbrella structure integrate.

23

Process Challange

24

This chair were meant to be sit by visitors in an exhibition, it needs to be a safe and stable structure. However, the material used as stool legs are abandoned umbrellas, there were only a couple of which were barely enough to withstand pressure, so the challange is to strengthen the structure and find ways to not let the legs split. Design progress as follows, 1. I started from developing different proportions and form, but then find out the hollow bone structure is too weak. 2. My first solution was to try fix the stool legs to one panel, but it became huge visual distraction. 3. Finally, I come up with an idea of welding some umbrella bones to the opposite leg to keep legs from splitting.

1.

2.

3.

The final design is to use the identity color of afterain studio on seating and one of the foot pad. And leave the crisscrossing bone structure black, creating an organized chaotic image.

Making Process 1. Strip umbrella down to hollow structure and thin bones. 2. Cut short the main bone. 3. Meld it to an iron plate. 4. Pour cement in hollow legs to intensify the structure. 5. Pour cement to a mold that fits the wooden seat. 6. Combine structure and seat, complete it with spray. 4.

Follow-up Exhibition & Press

The upcycled chair is a side project of afterain design's exhibition in "Adaptive City". This is my first time making something used in an exhibition, I was nervous about the structure couldn't be strong enough to be sit by visitors for 20 days, but eventually it did. To my surprise, it was featured in a Taiwanese press "Apple Daily" article about this exhibition.

summer workshops at Boisbuchet Benjamin Hubert - Symbiosis

In the summer of 2013, I am honored to be sponsored by XUE XUE foundation to attend a one week design workshop at Domaine de Boisbuchet, France. The workshop titled with Symbiosis, is led by British designer Benjamin Hubert. His studio in London holds the belief of "Materials driven, Process Led, Industrial Design" and he puts the same concept on leading this workshop. Participants are asked to find new ways of combining different materials, and explore the possibility of turning the results on product design.

34

Testing out the materials Banjamine start the workshop asking everyone to list out some random properties. After few rounds of material gathering and small presentation, the attendee pair up as groups and start testing the combinnation of the materials from the property assigned. Our group were assigned the properties "water resistance" and "hard". We found some remaining FREITAG fabrics from last workshop, having the character of both property, and decide to use it as our main material.

35

We want to use the fabric to convey the character of solidarity, at first we tried to use it as joints or as ropes, and finally, we decide to use as mold to create solid, hard objects. We than pour plaster into a FREITAG mold.

The soft texture make the mold capable of creating objects in organic forms, and the texture on the fabric will transfer on to the surface of the object, creating a unique visual effect.

36

Process We decide to use this methods to develop product as its unique surface texture, we start to think about what the final product would be. One of the experiments me made is to cast from a cone shape fabric, with a stick on the narrow side to seal the mold from the rear end. We though this object to be something special, than brainstorm around this object.

37

Vase

Paper Weight

We can use only use the objects provided from the workshop, so we decide not to make a complex mold, by only using simple processing ways. We use ropes to tie the cone shaped mold to create a strangled form. Put in another small cone shaped object from the other end to eal the mold, at the same time create a tiny space, making the object a vase.

The other mold is to sew a softer canvas into a small bag, pour plaster in the bag and to put it on a plain surface, to let it stand on its own and dry out. Therefore the result comes out as something like a small pillow, we take it as paper weight.

38

Outcome The final result is a series of vase in different strangled form, due to the limited time we have and the absence of professional craftsman, we couldn't have the collection in ceramic as we wish. Nevertheless, we have some of the small cones not pull out from the solid plaster, also creating it a highlight on the performance.

39

Different Way to Design During the process, I have no idea what might be our final result, this is so much different from my learning experience, in Taiwan I am usually taught to design for a solution, not knowing the destination is really new concept to me. This experience of design without computer is really refreshing.

FollowUp 40

Inspiration Cutural Shock

In an environment with people from different background all over the world, the differences between thoughts on same project, and the way how ideas integrate, is fascinating and truly inspiring. This experience is mind opening to me, it's like receiving a new map, I discover so much hidden path that I never knew before, it feels amazing knowing there are so many opportunities ahead of me. This experience not only broadly widen my horizons, but also inspire me to pursuit further international experiences like this.

Hyper-Aged Society Healthy Elderly

In 2025, Taiwan will join other 33 countries to become a hyper-aged society by having 20% of the population over 65 years old. The average age is estimate to reach 48 years old in 2030, the economy system cannot afford all over 65 to retire. With the help of boosting medical technology, we believe whether working or not, there will be more vibrant healthy elderly working in the cities in the near future.

It is estimated in every one out of five people in Taiwan will be over 65 years old in 2025.

45

Aging Bodies Our goal is to create more "cool grannies", by cool we mean confident elderly. Because sometimes due to their physical condition, elderly give up on doing many things, some elder feel discouraged when using the assistive device they are given. So, from feeling embarrased asking others to bring them out, or feeling shamed using elder assist devices, it eventually turn into not doing anything at all.

46

Statistic shows that nowadays in Taiwan, only 1/5 of the elderly commute by personal transportation, while others go by either public transportation, or don't leave the house on their own. Within those who actives, commuting via bicycles surpass all the other transactions by a rate of 8.2%. I believe, with a comprehensive public transportation network developed in the future, biking for short distance commute will be the major way of transportation for the elderly in the future.

Social meaning of going out I list out things elderly in Taiwan enjoyed doing, and have the conclution that no matter what activity they do, they enjoy doing things involved with social activity. 47

One interesting phenomenon in Taiwan is, the elder women are fully dressed when going to traditional markets. That is the place where they meet other elder, and greet with the vandors. So the social purpose of visiting traditional markets is more than just shopping for grocreies. So we chose shopping cart as the design object. And try to clear the obsticles elder face when try going to the markets.

Problems with riding to markets Riding a bike is energy consuming for elderly.

Energy saved in cart can help her ride effortlessly.

Elderly can easily loose balance when riding with things.

Supportive wheel added can help user maintain balance.

48

Concept Cool Grannies is a system including a shopping cart and an mobile app. The shopping cart can be attached to the bike and the wheel generates electricity when riding, the electricity can be saved in the battery inside. The cart is also an eletric motor device, which can be turned on and generate slight motion to help push the bike when needed. Therefore it can create a better riding experience for the elderly.

Making a Virtue of Necessity Aging is not an option, sometimes it isn't great knowing our physical ability has degenerated. However, we don't want the elderly to feel discouraged, with this system the elderly can go out by themselves without worrying not having enough strength to ride long distance, or cannot remember where they park their bike. We think, if we can make every elderly feel confident doing things they want, then everyone can be cool grannies! Furthermore, we hope this design can create a better biking experience, so then not only the elder, but people in all age can benefit from this design, thus creating more eco-friendly society.

Brand Transition 56

How design can change Taiwan

STRAUSS The brand of furniture “STRAUSS was established by YEONG JIN furniture factory, a wooden furniture manufacturer founded in the late 50s. The reason of naming after the Austria musician Johann Strauss, is to imitate his mind of bringing the music for the nobles to the common people. Hence, furnishings of STRAUSS were to be oriented towards every person for all needs, referring to the lifestyles in Taiwan. The brand has an ambition of becoming t h e f i r s t i n t e r n a t i o n a l Ta i w a n e s e furniture brand. However, though they had decades of experience in carpentry skills, the determine factor of enterprise transformation is design. This is the exact reason they came to our lab in NTUT. They want to make good use of the fresh minds of young student designers, as well as our strong research ability, to map out the path of their future development.

57

Workshop Members of our lab went to the headquarter of YEONG JIN in Taichung city, we had a one week workshop on getting a comprehensive understanding on the way this multi-brand company works. I gained humongous knowledge on every manufacturing process of a wooden furniture. Afterwards, we start on some hand-on research on the brand and what we could assist the brand in the future.

Research 1 : 45R Feature During our visits, we found out there's one common feature on their products, is the round edge with the radius of 4.5 centimeter. This feature is caused by the limited manufacturing methods on solid wood, but they instead market it as their brand identity.

58

Research 2 : Curved Plywood Another discovery, is their cost-down solution on replacing solid woods. They use a lot of curved plywood to make their products, for its similarity on wooden texture surface, but as a much cheaper material to use.

59

Research 3 : Product Opportunity Gap We analyze four aspects that might make influence on customers: Business, Society, Ec o n o m y, a n d Te c h n o l o g y. We c ro s s reference the factors and list out the product opportunity gap of the target group for STRAUSS.

Soothing & Practical Furniture

People nowadays are living in a stressful world, as their basic needs are mostly satisďŹ ed, and the majority does not have the urgent need to buy another furniture. However, people do have strong emotional needs, so the product that are appealing to them, are the ones with comforting factors.

The Cute Factor

The character minions are taking over the world with it’s silly-cuteness, I want to portrait the similar proportions, and their simple, yet hilarious expressions and use it on the design of a collection of cabinet.

Using the drawer as face, I then use the different icon on the outside of the drawer, to create a series of family cabinet shelf.

Proposal 2 Corner Collection Illustration Furniture

This proposal is for the other brand under the system of YEONG JIN manufacture, which is a co-brand collaborating with the brand of Jimmy Liao, a well-known illustrator from Taiwan. The goal of this collection is to use the elements from the illustration of Jimmy Liao, create furniture with both essence of the two brand.

The inspiration comes from the book “Smiling Fish”, in which the main character carries the fish as his friend in a fish tank. In the end he release the fish back to the sea. The beauty of their relationship of keep and let-go touches me. The small cabinet is like the fish tank carrying the fish, which can be put on shelves or table, symbolizing the company of fish, and the longer cabinet symbolize the sea. I make the front drawer in waved shape, and use paint technique to put on the fish.

Proposal 3 Peeking Collection

Illustration Furniture 64

This design uses the image from “Thank you, Furry Bunny, for a wonderful Afternoon” In the book there’s a large bunny accompanying the little girl to everywhere. I am inspired by the image the big bunny looking at the girl, as if it is peeking out from the book.

Ready-To-Assemble furniture

I specially make the furniture able to be assembled, to ďŹ t the habits of YEONG JIN furniture factory, and I use the existing mold of curved wood, to make this design even more approachable to produce.

Precious Knowledge In this project, we had frequent discussion with the chairman of the company, and gradually shaped my design to a better version, I have been longing to be involved with the development of Taiwanese furniture industry. This experience opened doors for me to pursue my goal in the future.

Woodwork prototype The first proposal were made into a full scale prototype, and presented to the authorities of STRAUSS. I gained plenty woodwork knowledge in the cooperating process with the craftsman of NTUT. 67

Afterain Design Studio Design Branch

In the summer of 2013, I started my third internship in Afterain design studio. They are a studio based in Taipei, and design mainly livingware and stationary. Afterain design is one of the most well known studio in Taiwan, their product are sold globally, I applied for their internship out of curiosity of the habits of Taiwan design industry, luckily I was offered an position in design branch. The main mission of us interns was to help coordinate their upcoming two exhibitions in fall.

73

Promotional Giveaway Every brand will try their best to drag visitors' attention in an exhibition, but most giveaways is put right away and not being able to display to others. Our design is inspired by sunglasses, something that people would hold up to show others. The hypnotize graphic is to attract others and create a funny look that people would like to take photos of each other and upload to social media. The rope attached so that it can be hung onto visitors' belongings.

74

T-shirt Uniform Every year, the studio will launch a new T-shirt as the uniform for all the public events. Our design took the pronunciation of "naughty" [wánpí], and use its harmonic sound as "beer" [píjiu], to design a rainy beer image, fitting the theme of the exhibition design.

75

Stamps The associates of "Adaptive city" want visitors to collect stamps from every exhibits as a part of promotion. Our design is around the elements of Taipei city, adaptive, cloud. From left to right: 1. Building block : The use of building block is to describe a city is build by all citizens. 2. Cloud Taipei : Taipei is the world design capital in 2016, we hope Taipei could rise up up to the cloud. 3. Rocket Taipei : Taipei could rise up into the space like a rocket.

Final design is to use square column connecting on the cloud, meaning the never ending of an adaptive city,

76

Paper Shopping Bags We want to create an image of interaction between visitors and bags, so the visitors with our bag wil draw attention to others, thus becoming a living commercial. We use the idea of the game "Paper, Scissors, Stones" to design the graphics of shopping bags, when carrying bags, gripping hands are in the same gesture as "stones" in the game. So we put other two gesture "Scissor" and "Paper" on the paper bag to interact with people.
