TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, “My name is Gillian. I have been moved to this neighborhood for more than 3 years. I am a vegetarian. I hate meat. And I can’t even think about people eating animals. Human beings are just too cruel. I had really bad relationships with my roommates before, because I threw up every time when I saw them eating or cooking. They called me freak. I wanted to move out so many times but New York City is just too expensive for me to live alone. Then one day after a big fight with my roommates, I saw this rental post about a property on Twitter said, “We’ve got everything u need. Don’t want neighbors? We can do that. Do want to meet new people? Come here.” It intrigued me so much that I decided to go and take a look. The agent took me to the “apartment building”, then handed me a piece of paper with hash tags. She told me to circle the ones that I like, after that she would show me around. So I did. Then we took the elevator up to the 5th floor and walked through a long corridor where one side of the corridor is a hug wall that was filled with people’s stuff. As we were passing by, I remembered that I was thrilled to find that there is a big room in the wall filled with my favorite vegan cookbooks. Then we stopped at a clean little unit. I walked in. There was one full size bed, a desk, a little shelf, and a private bathroom. The space was walled up with glass and cute curtains were placed on four sides. This was just perfect and I can’t ask for more. BEST REGARDS,

THE NEWCOMER

CITY.REBRAND __

The crisis in urbanism is worsening. The construction of neighborhoods in modern days is in obvious disagreement with established forms of behavior. On one side, in the older settlement of Kuala Lumpur, streets that were used to serve as urban interface for social activities were degenerated by heavy traffics. Leisure activities on the streets were slowly commercialized and denatured by international tourism. And this results in a dismal and sterile ambience in our surroundings, where social relations become impossible. The newly constructed neighborhoods in Malaysia like Cyberjaya and Putrajaya have but tow motifs, which dominate everything: driving by car and generating capital value. Faced with the necessity to develop in rapid pace, blocks of reinforced concrete are being constructed in which great masses of the modern Malaysian are condemned to die of boredom.

Learning from the ethnicity history of Malaysian cities, we’ve came across the conclusion that urban settlements in Malaysia has been defined as culturally contrasted neighborhood by ethnicities. Whereas, this is no longer the case in Malaysian modern cities.

Walkability | Public Realm

There is a phenomenon of unsuccessful shopping complexes in Malaysia. The failure of some complexes is principally due to poor accessibility, insufficient catchment, and unattractive design. The traditional shopping areas in the City Centre have largely been superseded by the emergence of large-scale shopping malls. As a consequence, there is no longer a clearly defined major shopping area or spine within the city centre.

cial and financial center, it is anticipated that more expatriate businessmen will be living in the city and that there will consequently be an increased demand for service apartment. There is very little variety in the type of accommodation on offer to serve the diverse requirement and budgets of foreign and domestic tourists.

Cultural Conservation

Similarly, not many buildings provide pedestrians with proper protection from the sun and rain. Also, major road and rail infrastructure has, effectively divided adjacent areas or neighborhoods that remain physically close but virtually inaccessible to each other.

The project, therefore, is intended to revitalize the streetscapes in modern Malaysian cities by: examining the possibilities that the existing ground offers; breaking the boundaries of the street surface by availing ourselves of new social interventions transforming the existing building facades, public area and infrastructural systems; and creating a lively street life in direct relation to incessantly changing way of behavior. (aka. social media effects) The project will be designed as a vehicle of social inclusiveness addressing different issues of urban scenarios that are currently in an urge of improvement in Malaysian cities, including: shopping, dining, hospitality, landscape and public green space, pedestrian, cultural/historical conservation, city branding and its visual identity. Also borrowing from the experience from Bangsar as well as Cyberjaya regarding city branding and marketing, the experience of this new urban street will also emphasize on creating a series of "instagramable" moments in the city. A catalog of facade and streetscape revitalization for various urban conditions are created as guidelines for future development of Malaysian cities.

OMA’s Master Plan proposal retains some selected Industrial Buildings that become part of the Grid City. The location of this zone along Nanhai Avenue allows the tallest of the preserved structures some visibility from a distance, serving as a visual gateway into the Master Plan from the West. The Zone is composed of three preserved structures; a Silo, a defunct Factory Building and a Loading Platform. Several smaller structures are proposed in order to contribute greater coherence to the existing internationally and locally. In principle, the main function of the district would be to provide gallery and exhibition space for art and other cultural events. The unique spatial characteristics of each of the preserved buildings would be enhanced by Architectural & Programming interventions designed to provide visitors with a contemporary and stimulating experience. A wide range of possibilities for how these interventions could take place have been considered.
