Antique Automobile Club of America Tioga Region Presidents Welcome Welcome to the 25th annual Tioga Region Antique Automobile Club of America car show. This year we not only celebrate a quarter century of promoting the preservation of our automotive history but also the national organization's 75th anniversary. Tioga Region is one of three AACA Regions in the Southern Tier of New York’s central area, and although we are not the largest of the groups we are still the only one that conducts our show as the national guidelines advise. In our show you will be able to “Walk Through Time” as you walk through the show field. We are proud to have not only cars from all eras of automobile history but also several that have won national awards for their preservation. Tioga Region was chartered in June of 1984 and the following year we hosted our first car show. From then to now we missed only one year here in Owego producing our show. That was the year when The Hickories Park was under water from flooding. We are people from all walks of life who are held together by our common bond of our love for old cars and the history they represent. We welcome new members and wish to remind you that you need not own an antique or collector car to be one of us. The only real requirement is your interest in cars of the past. We meet once a month, usually the third Monday of the month at various locations in and around Owego and Newark Valley. It is a requirement in our charter that members must belong to the national AACA to belong to our region. You will find membership applications for both the national and our region organizations in this book or you may ask any member for further information. We welcomed seven new members in the last eighteen months and would like to see that many or more in the next year. AACA is the worlds largest car club and now boasts more than 60,000 members and over 400 regions and chapters world wide. Our yearly national meeting welcomes members from Europe, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Rim, making us a truly international representation of the history of the automobile.

Join us in the fascinating hobby of the automobile! Bob Klingensmith, President Howard Seymour, Co-Vice President Jerry Adams, Co-Vice President Dick Stocum Secretary Charlie Kuhlman Treasurer 3

2010 Tioga Region Feature Vehicle 1984 Corvette Coupe Owned by: Bob & Lois Holmes In May 1999, we were riding by a local car dealer and spotted two Corvettes for sale. We stopped to look at them--one was a two-tone grey and black and the other was white. Our daughter and son-in-law were with us, so we both took them for a drive. After pondering it over, we decided to purchase the white one. Although we tried to talk our "kids" into purchasing the grey and black Vette, we were not successful! The car at that time was 15 years old and had 53,450 miles on it. It is now 26 years old and has 57, 714 miles! The 1984 Corvette Series Y is the sixth generation Corvette for the 80's and was introduced March 25, 1983, after missing the 1983 model year completely. Quality and production problems had delayed introduction of the new C4 generation so 1983 was passed over ... forty-four 1983 cars were assembled. Some were used to sort out production details while others were assigned to engineering evaluation and crash testing. A few were part of a December 1982 press introduction at Riverside Raceway in California. Forty-three of the 44 1983 C4 Corvettes were destroyed. The one remaining car, number 23 (white), was retired to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green KY where it is now on display. It is still owned byGM. The base 1984 Corvette Coupe had a 350 cu. in. 205 hp engine with automatic transmission and sold for $21,800.00. Model-year production for the 1984 Corvette was 51,547 and our car is number 1,625. The last C4 was produced on June 20, 1996. Car and Driver called the new C4 Corvette ''the most advanced production car on the planet." Motor Trend described it as "the best-handling production car in the world, regardless of price." The new C4 was designed by Jerry Palmer and engineered by David McLellan. The goal was to keep the Corvette identity, which they did. The new car was unmistakably a Corvette. Some of the features included the following: • The four round taillights - a significant Corvette styling cue - were still prominent. • One stylirig cue that disappeared was the "Coke Bottle" effect of the C3 Corvettes. Much of the extra interior room went towards a larger center console. • The T -tops of the C3 generation were replaced by a full

Targa roof for the C4. • The very useful hatchback opening that was first seen on the 1982 Collector Edition Corvette became a part of all C4 Corvettes. • Engine access was improved in 1984 with a "clamshell" hood design that also allowed for suspension and wheel access. • The 1984 engine was essentially the same as installed in the 1982 'Vette. Also carried over from the 1982 engine was the Cross-Fire Injection system, as proudly noted on the air cleaner cover and body side molding. • Initially all C4 Corvettes came with an automatic transmission, the same four speed that was first introduced in 1982. Later in the production run (January 1984) a BorgWarner T-I0 four speed manual transmission was available. • A front grill, which had gradually been disappearing as the Corvette progressed, was gone completely in the C4. Replacing the grill was a set of halogen running lamps, and cornering lamps located behind the front side marker lights were standard. • Note also that the new Corvette had almost a "bumperless" design. • Light weight was a primary engineering goal which was achieved with generous amounts of aluminum in the suspension and chassis parts. • The C4 got a bit more sophisticated with a five link rear suspension versus the three link design of the C2 and C3. At the front suspension, another Corvette first appeared: rack and pinion steering. Standard equipment included an advanced theftprevention system with starterrinterrupt, air conditioning, power windows, digital clock, reclining bucket seats; leather-wrapped tilt/telescope steering wheel, luggage security shade, and side window defogger. Optional equipment found on our Corvette include power driver seat, leather interior, power door locks, remov8rble transparent roof panel, and cruise control. We look forward to driving the Vette on many car tours in the future. Our next venture is Vettes at the Beach car show, which is at Sylvan Beach on Oneida Lake and will host around 400 Corvettes of all makes and years.
