Vestal Home Central Re-Opens After Last Year’s Fire

SPRING IS IN THE AIR!

The Vestal Home Central has reopened after a long rebuilding process. The property, which is located at 199 Stage Road in Vestal, suffered extensive damage from a fire in February 2020. The fire resulted in a complete loss of the warehouse and its contents, however the retail portion of the store was relatively undamaged thanks to the work of local firefighters. Home Central’s new and improved building boasts a larger warehouse and retail space, in addition to a building material showcase area that will enhance

customers’ shopping experiences. The management team and employees alike are excited to begin serving existing and new customers at their Vestal location once again. “Thank you to the community for your patience and support,” said Kate Whittemore, owner/president of Home Central. To celebrate their revitalized Vestal location, the Home Central team held a grand reopening and ribbon cutting on Friday, April 2. Home Central also has stores in Owego and Candor.

Local Grocery Stores Raise more than 747,360 meals for Food Bank of the Southern Tier during Check Out Hunger

Shoppers throughout the Southern Tier donated more than 747,360 meals to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier during this year’s Check Out Hunger campaign. This is the 27th year that the Food Bank has partnered with local grocery stores for Check Out Hunger. Tops Friendly Markets and Wegmans stores in the Food Bank’s six-county service area, as well as Save-A-Lot in Elmira and Horseheads Jubilee Foods, participated. Check Out Hunger is the Food Bank’s largest community giving campaign. Shoppers donate at the register in

the amounts of $2, $3, $5 or any amount they choose to help provide meals for Southern Tier families. This year’s campaign took place from late January through mid-March. “We are thankful for our amazing grocery partners, the cashiers and their generous customers,” said Natasha Thompson, President & CEO. “Last year was a challenging year for so many, and community fundraisers like Check Out Hunger help ensure that the Food Bank is able to continue to help families across the Southern Tier.” All donations made during Check Out Hunger stay within the community. In the Southern Tier, 1 in 9 people are considered food insecure and may struggle to access affordable, healthy food.

Tioga Downs Casino Resort in Nichols last month donated $100,000 to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. This donation provided 5,000 Easter meals for Southern Tier families. Jeffery Gural, owner of Tioga Downs and Vernon Downs, stated, “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier to give back to our local community. At Tioga Downs Casino Resort, we have an ongoing pledge to support our community and those that live in it, and getting involved with the Food Bank is a great way to make a difference in our neighbors’ lives. My mother grew up in this community, and I know the impact of having a full belly, especially for the Easter holiday.” Natasha Thompson, Food Bank Presi-

dent & CEO stated, “Even after being closed for months, like so many of our partners, Tioga Downs Casino Resort has used creative ways to support our community. Because of their longstanding support of our Turkey Drive, it seemed like a great fit for them to partner with us in providing Easter meals. Especially, after receiving 4,284 ham dinner requests from our agency partners. Their commitment to our friends and neighbors is incredibly inspiring.” “We are grateful for the generosity of Jeff and the Tioga Downs team,” said Renee Spear, Executive Director at Catholic Charities Toompkins/Tioga, “This donation will provide 50 more families with a holiday dinner, that we wouldn’t be able to serve otherwise.” www.foodbankst.org.

With warmer weather upon us, people will be spending more time outdoors. It is important to remember that we are still in the midst of a global pandemic and that our collective efforts as a community can help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Tioga County saw a decline in COVID-19 cases, however, over the course of the last few weeks, those numbers have increased. Chair of the Legislature, Martha Sauerbrey, reminds Tioga County residents of the following guidelines while safely enjoying spring: • Wear a mask and practice social distancing.

• While in public, keep at least a 6 feet distance from others. • Stay home if you’re feeling sick. • Wash your hands often and cover your cough. • Avoid large crowds and poorly ventilated spaces. • Clean and disinfect frequently used surfaces. • Get a vaccine when you are eligible. For more information, go to Tioga County’s Public Health website: https://www.tiogacountyny.com/ programs-agencies/covid19/

The Owego Elks Lodge 1039 is reaching out to community, youth, and business groups inviting them to form teams and join the Elks in a Spring Food Drive Challenge. From April 10 to April 24, teams will collect non-perishable food and monetary donations for points. One point for each dollar donated or food item collected. There will be daily bonus point items during the drive and then on the last day teams will check-in at the Owego Elks Lodge with the items they have collected to see who scored the most points. Winners get a trophy they can display with pride for the year, until next year’s

challenge winner. There will be prizes for adult groups, youth groups, and businesses. By working together, the Elks and the team are stronger and can cover more territory in their collection efforts for Tioga County. Interested organizations can join the challenge by calling the Owego Elks Lodge at (607) 687-1039 or email secretaryowegoelks@gmail.com to get a registration packet.
