Food waste happens in almost every household in America. According to Feeding America, the average American family of 4 throws away over $1,600 of produce every year. In NYS, approximately 3.9 million tons of food was discarded over the last year.
All of this is happening at the same time that food insecurities are on the rise. The Tioga Outreach Center operated by Catholic Charities in Tioga receives on average 800 visits per month to the food pantry with the number of new families assisted up 50% from last year. With more individuals facing hunger throughout our county, Food Rescue is a viable answer to help alleviate some of the burdens that our local families are facing.
Food Rescue is the practice of safely collecting edible, prepared foods from restaurants, grocers, and other food establishments, and then distributing it to local hunger relief agencies. Food Rescue simultaneously gets food to those who need it, reduces food waste, and minimizes the amount of toxic emissions from food waste in landfills.
For many years already, local food pantries have partnered with grocery stores to arrange pick up of foods that are close to expiration or sell by dates to then offer to the community.
The next step in Food Rescue is to save prepared foods and food prep waste from landfills. With recent updates to state and local laws and regulations regarding food waste, businesses are now expected to make arrangements to minimize their waste output, including transfer of foods to local pantries and compost to nearby farms. The Community Kitchen in the current Nichols location is fully certified and is the only location in the county initiating the expansion of Food Rescue efforts.
Jo DiFulvio, Program Supervisor, says,
“We are implementing the Tioga FRESH program (Food Resources Everyone Should Have) and have already been working with some local businesses and organizations for the last year to get it up and running.”
Tioga Downs Casino and Resort has been collaborating with CCTT (Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga) to minimize food waste over the last few months. In that time, almost 1,000 pounds of food has been rescued, packaged, and offered to those who visit the food pantry.
CCTT is also working with organizations on composting options. DiFulvio states that as word is getting out, the local nonprofit has been getting calls from several local restaurants looking to participate. “We are fully committed to the development and progress of this program”, states DiFulvio.

Concerts in the Park
This year’s Concerts in the Park began on June 28, and continues through August 20.
The concerts are held in Hickories Park in Owego, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
In the event of inclement weather, the concerts will move to the Owego Elks Lodge.

The Tioga CSD announced its participation in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).
Meals will be provided to all children 18 years and under without charge. Hop Head Brewery originally opened its doors as Sugar Maple Café on July 14, 2018. Established by Aaron and Jenna Fairfield as a family owned and operated café serving quality breakfast and lunch entrées at affordable prices, time and life changes have led to the café evolving into a gastropub. The loyal patronage from Owego and surrounding communities was what made it possible for Aaron and Jenna to remain in business during and after the pandemic of 2020, with the challenges of “to go” orders only, 50% dine-in capacity, and the great mask debate. Once those hurdles were overcome, a bone cancer diagnosis for Jenna in 2022 led to the change from a café to brewery so Aaron could be home to care for the two youngest of their five children in the morning and work in the evening while Jenna remained home recovering. Now that Jenna is well and has been able to return full -time, Hop Head Brewery is a gastropub serving lunch & dinner on Wednesdays & Thursdays, and brunch & dinner on Fridays & Saturdays (see end of article for new hours). The rest of the week is for prep and brewing by Aaron, and family time!
Trivia, live music, and more fun events are sprinkled in throughout the week to add to the atmosphere (like Hop Head Brewery on Facebook for updates). Guests dining inside or outside can enjoy a great meal, house brewed craft beers and ciders, and some NY State wines, ciders, and alcohol. Nonalcoholic beverages are available, too.
On Friday, July 14, Aaron and Jenna will be celebrating their 5 year anniversary with a ribbon cutting ceremony by the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce.
On Saturdya, July 15, Aaron and Jenna will celebrate by having a Hawaiian Luau Pit Style Pig Roast from 12-8pm, at Hop Head Brewery. Roasted pork will be the sole featured entrée that day along with two sides available from a selection of several. The cost is $20 for a meal with a non-alcoholic beverage or $25 with an alcoholic beverage for guests aged 21 years and over. NYS Department of Transportation to abandon their plans to build the Rt 17 Expressway through the wetland. She was successful, and the expressway was built around the wetland. Mrs. Marsi passed away June 10, 2008, at the age of 95. The Apalachin Marsh is owned by the New York State Department of Transportation and is maintained by volunteers from Waterman Center.

Riverow Bookshop Hosts Book Signing - July 15

Wayne Newton to play at Tioga Downs Casino Resort in August
Nichols, NY – Tioga Downs Casino Resort has booked another concert this summer with music legend Wayne Newton set to play on August 31 at 8:00 pm.
Recognized as a global entertainment superstar, Wayne is known for his signature song, “Danke Schoen” and countless top hit singles, including “Daddy, Don’t You Walk So Fast,” “Red Roses for a Blue Lady” and “Years.” To date, Wayne has recorded and released 165 albums.

Blueberry & Book Festival Bake-Off July 22 in Berkshire
The Berkshire Blueberry & Book Festival Bake-Off, a non-professional baking contest, will be held on Saturday, July 22.
All ages are encouraged to join in the fun. There will be four categories: 1) blueberry pies, 2) blueberry muffins & coffee cakes, 3) baked blueberry desserts such as crumbles, crunches, buckles, brown betty, and 4) gluten-free blueberry versions.
This is a non-professional baking contest. Entries will be scored on appearance, texture, taste, and creativity. Winners will be announced at 11:40 and prizes and ribbons will be awarded in each category and division as well as a “best in show” at that time. After the judging, all entries will be sold by the piece.
Registration forms are available at
www.berkshirefreelibrary.org or the Berkshire Free Library at 12519 State Route 38 in Berkshire. There is a $10 fee per item entry, and all forms are due no later than July 12, 2023.
On the day of the festival, baked good entries should be brought to the Berkshire Fire Station on July 22 between 8:15 and 9:00.
The Bake-Off is sponsored by the First Congregational Church of Berkshire, and all profits will benefit the Helping Hands Food Pantry.
Other events taking place that day including blueberry pancake breakfast from 7:00 to 10:00, lots of food, local authors, Dan the Snake Man, Story Laurie, a bouncy house, a dunking booth, book sale, basket raffle, art show, live music, and plenty of vendors.
