The 164th Tioga County Fair in Owego kicks off on Tuesday, August 8, at Marvin Park Fairgrounds, 50 W Main Street. Admission gates open at 2:30pm, rides at 4:00pm, and the Painted Pony Championship Rodeo begins at 7:00pm at the grandstand.
Wednesday’s and Friday’s grandstand attraction is the fan favorite demolition derby at 7:00pm both nights. The kids Powerwheels Derby is Friday at 6:00pm.
On Thursday at 7:00pm, for the first time ever its the ATV and Dirt Bike Rodeo. This obstacle course competition is for local ATV and dirt bike riders alike. The Dash for Cash is a barrel race for local horse riders that is also at 7:00pm on Thursday. Winners for all these events will earn cash prizes.
Saturday is full of fun all day with the truck and tractor pulls. The “Out of the Field Farm Stock” pull begins at 1:00pm. The New York Pullers Truck and Tractor pull is at 7:00pm, both events at the grandstand. There is also a truck pull category for stock 4x4s. The public is encouraged to register for any and all of these events, competitions and more.
The Gillette Family Midway is back
with top notch rides and amusement. The not-to-be-missed 4H and FFA projects, competitions and auctions continue all week long at the cattle barn area. The Tioga County Fair arts and crafts area is chock full of competitions for all Tioga County residents. Be sure to check the premium book to discover how to enter your creation. Also included is the Exotic petting zoo, air rifle range, 4H Clover Cafe, numerous vendor displays and more. All inclusive Admission is $15 daily for everyone.

As our local students are in the midst of enjoying their summer breaks, some parents are starting to mentally calculate the necessary cost of back-to-school shopping. Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga (CCTT) in partnership with many other organizations and agencies is stepping up to make sure students have everything they need to be ready for the first day of school.
On Monday, August 21, the nonprofit is hosting their annual Back to School Party for everyone in the community to enjoy. This event will be held on the Tioga Central School campus at 27 Fifth Avenue in Tioga Center, from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 p.m.
Last year, CCTT provided 250 backpacks and thousands of school supplies to our local families. “This year, we are expecting many more families,” says Tioga Outreach Center Coordinator, Patrick Aquilio. “With the unprecedented and steady increase in the requests for our emergency financial services and our food pantry visits, we are estimating at least a 50% increase in the attendance for this event based on these numbers alone.”
School-aged children from Pre-K to high school can pick out a free backpack and any needed school supplies. Matt from Andy & Sons Barbershop and students from the BOCES Cosmetology program will be providing some free haircuts this year. The Tioga
County Sheriff’s Department will be on hand to provide Operation Safe Child IDs. Activities like cornhole, crafts, face painting, and other fun games will be provided as well as information and resources from many local organizations that will be participating.
This year’s Back to School Party is once again sponsored by a generous grant from M&T Bank.
Students must be present to receive a backpack and supplies.
This event is organized and hosted by Catholic Charities. Any student and family from Tioga County is welcome to attend this completely free event.

Owego Hose Team Reclaims CNY and Gavin Elected VP
Owego Hose Team places 1st at annual hose races.
The Owego Hose Team won the coveted Central New York firematic hose racing title at the 129th Annual Central New York Firefighter’s Association (CNYFA) convention held last month in Homer, NY.
The races are timed events where firefighters test their skills. Teams of five members must connect nozzles to hoses, hoses to hoses, and hoses to the fire hydrant, and knock down targets in the quickest time. The team had been practicing for the competition on Delphine Street the past two weeks. The Hose Team led the competition where firefighters test their skills scoring first places in the Ladder, Wye and Straight Lay Races. Team members included Mike MacNaughton, Joe Morabito, TJ Mead, Tim Gavin, and Patrick Gavin. Race times for Owego were as follows:
First (1st) Place Ladder Race - Owego
Hose Team - 14.05 seconds.

Hose Team - 24.15 seconds.

Hose races improve basic firefighting skills.
CNYFA Members also elected Owego Hose Team Captain and 28-year Life Member of Croton Hose Company #3 of the Owego Fire Department, Patrick Gavin, as its First (1st) Vice President. The two-year term puts Gavin in line to be President of the CNYFA in 2025. Gavin was first elected Second (2nd) Vice President in Owego in 2021.
The last time a member from the Owego Fire Department held the Office of President for the organization was 70 years ago when Floyd Angel was elected in 1953. Mr. Angel and Gavin’s grandfather Girard served together as Members of Owego’s Susquehanna Hose Company #1 and worked at the A&P in Owego.
Representing 20 counties comprised of 500 fire departments, CNYFA serves the volunteer fire and emergency medical services of Central New York, through education, legislation and recognition while building camaraderie with its members and partners.

Shady Strong originated in 2019 and was inspired by Robert J. Shady, who was diagnosed with bulbar onset ALS on May 23, 2018, and passed away 18 months later on October 23, 2019, at the age of 75. Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era with the 57th MP Company stationed at West Point. Those in military service are more likely to develop ALS than those in the civilian population. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease after the famous baseball player was diagnosed, is a nervous system disease affecting brain and spinal cord nerve cells. ALS causes loss of muscle control over time, eventually leading to the loss of the ability to move, speak, eat, and breathe. There is no cure for ALS at this time.
