2013 Strawberry Festival to Celebrate 33 Years

Chamber of Commerce Community Award Winners The Tioga County Chamber of Commerce held their annual dinner and silent auction on February 7. This year, the event was held at Tioga Downs Casino for the first time. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of

The Historic Owego Marketplace in downtown Owego announced plans for the upcoming 33rd Annual Strawberry Festival to be held Friday night, 5:30 to 10:30 pm, June 14, and Saturday, June 15, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The festival hosts more than 20,000 guests each year and offers plenty of food and entertainment on every street corner, and up to 200 vendors.

According to Stella Reschke, Tioga County Tourism Director, the festival committee has tried to incorporate new and exciting activities for the festival to attract visitors from all over. “We usually see lots of new faces come in for the festival from all over the Northeast because strawberries are a universally much-loved fruit, and it's just a really fun couple of days.” said Reschke.

The Strawberry Festival will include new and returning features: "Straw Dawgs Strut Their Stuff",

Fireworks over the River, Wine & (new) Beer Tasting Tent, Strawberry Festival Parade, Rubber Ducky Derby, 3rd Friday ArtWalk, Chicken BBQ, 10th Annual Pig Roast, Rock Climbing Wall, 5K Run and 1 Mile Kids' Run, and much more.

Concordia Tour Choir to Perform in Owego

Join us for

St Patrick’s Day Zion Lutheran Church in Owego will host a concert by the Tour Choir from Concordia College in Bronxville, NY, on Thursday, March 7, at 7:00 p.m.

This year's Tour Choir is a choir of 23 students. It is an auditioned, mixedvoice choir which performs music from a wide spectrum of cultures, eras, and styles. They perform annual tours for local church services. Students in the Tour Choir represent a variety of academic disciplines—from education and music to social work and religion—but all share a love of song and use their gifts for the glory of God. The Tour Choir is directed by Dr. Jason Thoms.

The concert is part of the choir's Great Lakes Tour which takes them to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan as well as New York.

The choir chose Lutheran Churches with schools as part of their tour, as the children from the school will also sing in the concert. The children are delighted for the opportunity to sing with a college choir and have been practicing selections from the concert for several months.

Zion will have a dinner for the choir and public starting at 5:00 pm. A light dinner of sandwiches, salads, and fruit will be served until 6:30 pm, with a free-will offering to cover the dinner.

An offering for the college will be taken during the concert.

Vestal Museum Exhibit:

The Mighty Susquehanna: Friend and Foe The Vestal Museum re-opens March 6 with the newly installed exhibit The Mighty Susquehanna: Friend and Foe. The exhibit will examine how the river has shaped Vestal, not only by defining its northern border, but also by attracting original Indian settlements, by providing a pioneer "highway" for the first white settlers to travel, providing residents with recreation and food, and yes, by physically re-shaping our valley through flooding. The exhibit will look at both the history of our river as well as aspects of its natural history.

The exhibit will feature photos from the museum's collection which have never before been publicly exhibited, as well as historic objects from the collection relating to our river. The museum is lucky to have some truly fabulous

mounted riparian animals from Kyle Konecny Taxidermy included in the exhibit, as well as Indian artifacts lent from the Susquehanna River Archeological Center.

There will be a special presentation of award winning PBS documentary The Flood of '35 by Brian Frey, the film's producer, on April 25, at 7:00 pm at the Vestal Library.

The Vestal Museum will hold an Open House with light refreshments on Sunday, March 10 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Regular open hours are Wednesday through Saturday, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The Vestal Museum is located next to Vestal Library, 328 Vestal Parkway East, Vestal. Admission is free.

Krein Earns Eagle Scout David Krein of Apalachin recently earned the Eagle Scout Award. David’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor took place on January 6, 2013, at the Park Terrace Community United Methodist Church (Boy Scout Troop 43’s charter organization).

For his Eagle Scout project, David built a culvert and stone bridge at Brick Pond in Owego (owned and operated by Waterman Conservation Education Center). This culvert and bridge replaced a wooden bridge that was washed away in the flood of 2011.

David is the son of Mike Krein and Tracy Krein of Apalachin.

The 58th Annual Apalachin Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, March 23, at 1:00 pm, behind the TLC-BOCES School on Pennsylvania Avenue in Apalachin.

The Easter Bunny will be there to cheer on the children as they hunt for the eggs.

There will also be free new digital vision screen for children ages six months to six years, and free kids IDs from the Tioga County Sheriff's

Department. These events will be held inside the TLC-BOCES School from 12:30 to 2:00 pm.

Help the community by bringing a non-perishable food item for the local food pantry.

In case of rain, the Easter Egg Hunt will be held on March 30.

Apalachin Lions Scholarship Program The Apalachin Lions Club 26th Annual Scholarship program will award $1500 in scholarships to deserving students from the class of 2013 who live in the 13732, and 13760, 18830 zip codes. This covers Apalachin, Campville east to the Broome County line, and Little Meadows, PA. The scholarships are awarded to students who have made outstanding contributions in service to their community and school.

One $500 scholarship will be awarded to students who attend Owego Free Academy and Vestal High School, and one $500 scholar-

ship will be awarded to a student who attends either of the following schools: Broome Tioga BOCES, Montrose Junior-Senior High, Seton Catholic Central High School, Ross Corners Christian Academy, and Home Schooling (LEAH).

The distribution of scholarships is based on the relative numbers of students from Apalachin, Campville and Little Meadows attending each of the schools.

Inaugural “Running of the Bears” 5K Benefit Scheduled Vestal High School’s Varsity Club is sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk, “The Running of the Bears,” on Saturday, March 23. All proceeds will benefit the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association.

Race day registration and packet pickup begins at 7:00 am with the race kicking off at 9:00 am. The registration fee is $25 for runners and walkers, and teams of eight or more participants receive a discounted registration of $20 per

person. Pre-register by March 14 to receive a “Running of the Bears” Tshirt.

4-H Robotics Camp in April A Robotics Camp will be held April 1 to April 5, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 840 Upper Front Street in Binghamton.

This camp is open to youth who are 11 to 13 years old. Cost of the camp is $125 and includes lunch and snacks as well as several tours and demonstrations.

Youth will build an autonomous Eco -Bot to complete a mock beach clean-up challenge. Then youth will create and

program several robots using the Lego NXT kits and compete in challenges each day. Friday will host a final Robotics Event where youth will design and program their own creations to compete in one of many challenges.

Business Courses Offered Members of the Little Meadows Rescue Squad held their Christmas banquet in January of this year. A big thank you to the planning committee for an excellent buffet and a job well done.

Awards were presented to those members who have served Little Meadows and surrounding communities for over twenty years. This included official positions as well as credited EMTs. Special plaques and pins were awarded to the following: Allen Chase, Terry Phillips, Jim Maus, and Elton Winskie (twenty-plus years for all).

A special thank you to Ruth Chase who will be retiring as an EMT. Ruth has served the squad for over 25 years and surely will be missed by the people of this community. Ruth held most of the offices involved in running the squad. We all know that feeling of

comfort when you see a familiar face on the ambulance and know their presence makes a difference.

The efforts from these individuals have made the squad an efficiently run volunteer service today.

Thank you to all members who dedicate their time and energy. We appreciate your service to us, the people of Little Meadows, and surrounding Pa. communities.

Avenue Q"Auditions at Ti-Ahwaga " The Ti-Ahwaga Community Players will hold auditions for their upcoming musical production of "Avenue Q" on Tuesday, March 12, and Friday, March 15, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, at the TiAhwaga Performing Arts Center, 42 Delphine Street in Owego.

The production opens on May 31 and runs through June 16. Rehearsals will begin the first week of April.

Parts are available for all voice ranges and for a racially diverse group of actors who are at least 17 or older.

The ribbon was cut by Bill Moon, the

longest-serving manager of the Owego J.J. Newberry’s store. He was assisted

by Bonita Atwell, one of the managers who helped close the store in 1996.

The Early Owego Antique Center will be open six days a week (closed Tuesdays), 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Opening with 48 vendors, the Center will continue to grow as more of the 19,000 square feet of newly improved space is taken by sellers.

The Owego Citizens Party has announced their candidates seeking Village of Owego Trustee seats for the March 19 election.

Current Village of Owego 2nd Ward Trustee Jim Legursky and former Village of Owego 3rd Ward Trustee Ann Lockwood will be on the ballot on the Citizens Party line. Dennis Curatolo is a write in candidate for the 1st Ward Trustee seat endorsed by the party.

The candidates bring a wealth of experience to this year’s campaign.

Legursky has served on the Village Board since 2010. Lockwood served as Village Trustee from 2010-2012.

Curatolo is President of Historic Owego Marketplace. All the candidates support more open lines of communication between the board and village as well as efforts to run the village government more like a business. Legursky and Curatolo are small business owners.

Curatolo said, “One of my biggest concerns with the Village of Owego board is the lack of openness to the public. I feel there is a lack of

communication between Owego residents and the Village. There are several instances over the past years when the only time the public is informed, is after the fact.” Added Legursky, “As trustee I have worked towards maximizing village services while keeping taxes down. I believe that during my term in office I have voted in the best interest of the village on all matters brought before the board.”

Lockwood noted the previous Citizens Party majority kept tax increases below 1%.

Campaigning on the theme that the “future is now” for the Village of Owego the candidates cite continued flood recovery and prevention, fiscal responsibility, accountability, “smart growth” economic policies, and support of all volunteerism in the Village as their priorities.

Village of Owego elections are Tuesday, March 19 from Noon till 9:00 pm at Owego Central Fire Station on North Avenue.

Red Cross Recognizes Tioga Downs for Sandy Donation

The American Red Cross Central New York Region last month recognized Tioga Downs Casino and Vernon Downs Casino Hotel Owner Jeff Gural and track patrons for raising more than $200,000 for the Superstorm Sandy relief fund for New York City and Long Island.

A total of $60,440 was raised through a donation drive at the two tracks and

She wants to do it, but her husband, Walter, is dead set against it and Gussie discovers she has stage fright and can't open her mouth in front of a camera. Everybody tries to help her get over it . . . Walter through hypnotism; Bernie, her agent, by threats; and even wacky Gypsy Carmen from next-door casts spells. Just when she thinks she's cured, the taping turns into a comic nightmare concluding an all out food fight that almost ends the show and her marriage.

Cookin' with Gus brings together four unlikely characters in a stew of hijinks and hilarity. Fun for the performers and a great evening for the audience.

Knapp Named to Wilkes Dean's List Catherine Knapp of Vestal was named to the Dean's Honor List for Academic Achievement in the Fall 2012 Semester at Wilkes University in Wilkes -Barre, PA, where she is enrolled in the Doctor of Pharmacy Program.

Catherine is a 2009 graduate of Montrose High School. She is the daughter of Mary Lou Knapp Van Kuren of Vestal and the late Keith Knapp. She is the granddaughter of the late Fred and Mary Brown of Apalachin.

Youth of the Year Finalist New Roots Charter School senior Megan Hall-Ruquet was named a finalist for the 2012 Cortland County Youth of the Year Award and honored at a ceremony in January at the Homer Center for the Arts in Homer.

Megan received a certificate of merit from Senator James L. Seward, a letter from the NYS Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand, and a gift card. Megan was nominated by New Roots staff for her advocacy against bullying and her actions to promote acceptance, inclusion and compassion for all students. Next year, Megan plans to study Communications at Finger Lakes Community College.

Notice Tioga County Residents We have been getting calls from various people with questions concerning your recycling pickup.

Tioga County recycling program has changed as of 2/1/2013. Because of market changes, there will no longer be any curbside pickup of plastic bags.

Exception to the rule- it is ok to put shredded paper out into a plastic bag to contain the paper.

Grocery bags may be returned to most stores, all other plastic bags should be placed in the trash.

Many people are not aware that the only glass that is recyclable curbside is glass jars or glass bottles (clear, green or brown in color); all other glass goes into the trash. No Styrofoam or cardboard with Styrofoam attached to it. Remove Styrofoam before recycling the cardboard.

We have also received some complaints concerning our pickup service; we strive to provide good service. We are now picking most all of our recycling in trucks that look like garbage trucks.

Be assured that we are recycling all of the material picked up. You no longer have to sort your recycling material curbside. The new facility does all the sorting for you, so mix all your recycling together in one container now.

The SUNY Cobleskill Department of Sport & Exercise announced last month

that senior Marten Peterson of Owego and Newark Valley High School, a member of the men’s indoor track & field team has been named the athletic program’s Fighting Tiger Athlete-of-theWeek. This marks the second time this year that Peterson has earned the award.

The senior mid-distance runner was the Fighting Tigers top individual performer at the 2013 New York State College Track Conference (NYSCTC) Indoor Championships hosted by Ithaca College at the Ithaca College Athletics & Events Center in Ithaca. Peterson met the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Indoor Championship Qualifying Standard in the 800-meter run finishing second in a time of 1:56.06 to establish a new program record in the event and earn All -NEAC Team honors.

April Leonard Selected as AHP Travel Award Winner April Leonard, daughter of Bill Leonard and Mary Gleason-Leonard of Owego, is one of three talented students pursuing a career in equine publishing who have earned the opportunity of a lifetime as American Horse Publications (AHP) Travel Award Winners.

The AHP Student Award Contest provides up to three $750 travel awards to attend the 2013 AHP Meet at the Peak Seminar in Colorado Springs, Colorado on June 20-22, 2013. The students will have a chance to meet leading equine publishing professionals and discuss career possibilities during the three days of educational sessions and related activities.

April Leonard, 21, is a senior at Cazenovia College in Cazenovia, New York, where she majors in Equine Business Management. Her first experience with horses was western riding lessons during childhood at El Rancho de Paz in Owego. While in high school and col-

lege, she worked at El Rancho de Paz, caring for a herd of horses and teaching riding lessons. She rode on the western varsity riding team as a freshman at Cazenovia, but broadened her riding skills by taking hunt seat lessons the following three years. During summer 2012, April was an intern for both Sidelines Magazine and the Certified Horsemanship Association’s magazine, The Instructor.

The internships allowed April to hone her interviewing, writing and photography skills. She also had an opportunity to administrate the Sidelines Magazine’s Facebook page and other web pages.

April loves to write as much as she loves horses, so she is excited to find the perfect blend of these two interests. She plans to pursue a career in equine publishing after graduation. Her goal focuses on magazine writing, but working with blogs and social media would also be an interesting aspect of her career.

February 21, 2013 Barbara P. Taylor Canfield, of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away on February 21, 2013. She was 80.

She was the loving wife of Raymond J. Canfield, and beloved mother of Richard, Wesley, Sherrie, Alisa, and Will Taylor. Mrs. Canfield was predeceased by both parents, Richard and Mildred Wiggins of Owego, NY; her first husband, Ralph S. Taylor; and her two oldest sons, Richard and Wesley.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond J. Canfield of Havre de Grace, MD; daughter Sherrie & her husband Scott Ulishney of Bel Air, MD; daughter Alisa and her husband Andre Antoine of Edgewood, MD; son, Will Taylor of Havre de Grace, MD; dear brother Richard R. Pass of Sayre, PA, and sister Sarah and George Hall, of Owego, NY. She was the fond step-mother of Sarah and Allison Canfield, and husbands Nigel Blaum and David Balsden, respectively, of Harrogate, England. She was the grandmother of 16 and greatgrandmother of 6. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Canfield was a graduate of the Owego Free Academy. She served in the U.S. Air Force for almost 2 years. She worked as a teacher’s aid for Havre de Grace Elementary School. Mrs. Canfield was a member of the Bel Air Community Band for 23 years and the Upper Chesapeake Community Band for 20 years. She volunteered for the Lutheran Mission Society. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Havre de Grace,

MD, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher for 60 years and was a Willing Worker. Mrs. Canfield was also the Eastham Family Historian.

A viewing was on Monday, February 25, 2013, from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM, at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 South Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD. Funeral services began at noon. Pastor Ron Smith officiated. Interment was held at Harford Memorial Gardens.

Fitness Challenge for Women on March 22 Kick off your winter blues and register now for the Women’s Wicked Winter Challenge. It is an Obstacle Fitness Challenge for Women, held on Friday, March 22, at the Owego Gymnastics and Activity Center, 748 Route 38 in Owego. The event begins at 5:30 pm.

Register individually or as a team with a maximum of 4 members on a team. Everyone goes at their own pace.

The minimum age is 16 and there is no maximum age limit. Obstacle Course Action will work abs, legs, core, and cardio. Equipment such as ropes, beams, bars, trampoline and the 6' deep pit full

of foam block pieces will be used. It will be set up for the beginner to the more advanced. Refreshments and celebration to follow.

Tioga County Council on the Arts has announced a new collaborative art event open to creatives of all ages and skill levels, called artfully SQUARED. Here's how it works: use any medium to make a piece that measures 7" square, donate your artwork to Tioga County Council on the Arts (TCCA), and then come see the exhibition and buy original artwork for your walls.

There is no fee to enter and all pro-

ceeds will benefit the programs at Tioga County Council on the Arts.

All artworks will be exhibited in TCCA's ArtSpace Gallery during the entire month of April and each piece will be available to purchase for $20.

Dear Editor, Village of Owego Elections will be held on March 19. The Rebuild Owego Party has two excellent candidates running for trustee. They are both young newcomers to politics and will bring a fresh outlook to helping govern Owego.

Eric Yetter is running for trustee from Ward 2. Eric serves in the Village Planning Board. He is a social worker who has lived on Erie Street for three years.

He wants to help the village continue with flood recovery and that we are prepared for the changes that gas drill could bring.

Karl Jantz a native of Owego who grew up on McMaster Street. He has bought a flooded house on East Front Street and is renovating it.

Eric and Karl are both interested in fighting housing blight, working on flood recovery and keeping taxes as low as possible.

The Rebuild Owego Party shares these goals. They have worked to remove blighted houses, worked tirelessly on flood mitigation by pursuing buy outs, elevation of homes, working on the County Hazard Mitigation Plan, and a Owego Long Term Community Recovery Plan. They had a budget this fiscal year that had a tax levy 1.2 % lower than the tax levy the previous year.

This was done by working with all trustees in the best interest of the village.

Black Cat Gallery Celebrate 3rd Anniversary The Black Cat Gallery in Owego will celebrate its 3rd anniversary during this month's Third Friday Art Walk on March 15, 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to join Black Cat Gallery in celebrating three years in business, with continued growth, new artists, and constantly changing art and quality crafts.

Music for the Third Friday Art Walk will be JFK, a local group playing a mix of folk, rock and blues with Jim Overhiser, on guitar, Frank Bocek playing his harmonicas, and Kelly Anderson, with her beautiful lyrics.

New artists joining the Black Cat include Nancy McGowan-Vanness, with hand built pottery, baskets, figures and leaf form platters; and Susan Szczotka, a multi-media artist who crafts jewelry with metals and glass. Susan is also a weaver and a potter, creating soft, colorful woven scarves, and Raku pottery vessels in earthy, warm tones.

Women's History in Owego - March 9 The Susquehanna Chapter of New York State Women Inc in conjunction with the Tioga County Historical Society is pleased to invite the public to a special program in honor of Women’s History Month, on Saturday, March 9 starting at 11:00 am at the Tioga County Historical Society Museum 110 Front Street in Owego.

The program will begin with a historical interpretive performer doing a monologue as Belva Lockwood. Belva Lockwood was an Owego resident for three years during the Civil War. As a widowed mother she ran the Female Seminary on Front Street. She went on to be the second woman appointed to the District of Columbia Bar and later the first woman allowed to try cases before the US Supreme Court. Belva was also the first woman to legally run for President of the United States and also the first woman to run for President twice.

All ages welcome for this presentation.

Tioga Downs Announces Employee Promotion

Park in Seneca Falls, NY, will present a PowerPoint talk entitled, "Misconception, Misrepresentation, and Ridicule: Lampooning & Cartooning in the 1850s". It will explore various cartoons from the 1850s and how newspapers and journals used cartoons to either promote or (in most cases) ridicule political parties and social movements. Ranger Malone will explore political cartoons and their relation to the women’s rights movement in the 1850s.

The first program will last about 40 minutes and allow time for questions following the program. Zumbathon to Benefit Porcari/OFD Capt. Matthew Porcari of The Owego Fire Department lost his life on January 21, 2013, during the call of duty. Local Author's Novel is "A Fireman's Dream"

Local Attorney Running for Tioga Co DA

Local attorney Kirk O. Martin last month announced his candidacy for Tioga County District Attorney. Kirk is running as a Republican in this fall’s election. He lives in Waverly and owns and operates a law and real estate office in Owego.

“Tioga County is a place where my roots are deep, and the place I’ve called home all my life,” he said. “The wellbeing and safety of our citizens, who are our families, neighbors and friends, is of utmost importance to me.”

“My great grandfather protected our nation in WWI, my grandfather in WWII, and my father the same in Vietnam. Now I’m ready to do what I can to protect the citizens of Tioga County.

Today I’m announcing my candidacy for District Attorney.”

Kirk was cheered on at his announcement, held at the Owego Treadway Inn, by more than 100 supporters and friends. He was introduced by Tioga County Sheriff Gary Howard.

“As Sheriff, I need a partner in law enforcement who has the guts and fortitude to prosecute and put away criminals,” said Sheriff Howard. “Kirk Martin is the District Attorney that Tioga County needs. He has my full and strong support.”

Kirk received the endorsement of

the Tioga County Law Enforcement Union earlier this week.

Kirk, age 41, is a graduate of Candor High School, Penn State University and Boston College Law School. He has practiced criminal law for 14 years, including six as a Tioga County Assistant District Attorney.

“When it was time to decide where to start my practice, the choice was easy for me. My classmates took high paying jobs in Boston or NYC, but I had a fire in my belly to make a difference,” he added. “There wasn’t any place where I wanted to go more than my home here in Tioga County.”

As an Assistant District Attorney, Kirk made it a priority to aggressively attack the most dangerous criminal activity affecting Tioga County at that time: methamphetamine. He obtained search warrants for law enforcement officers, sometimes assisting at their execution, sought high bail on dealers, coordinated with the U.S. Attorney in joint prosecutions, and made sure those who threatened the community served stiff sentences.

At his announcement, Kirk laid out an ambitious plan to undertake as District Attorney, including his top three priorities: 1. Fighting elder and senior fraud.

“Our seniors deserve to be protected, and I’ll get it done.”

2. Fighting drugs, like bath salts, meth and heroin. “I won’t stand for the deterioration of our morals and our communities.”

3. Standing up for Second Amendment Rights. “The Federal and State Governments have been creeping up on our constitutional rights, and it needs to stop.”

Kirk is running for a four-year term for District Attorney. The office is vacant following former District Attorney Gerald Keene’s election as Tioga County Judge last November.

Rebuild Owego to Host "Meet the Candidates" The Rebuild Owego Party will host a "Meet the Candidate" event on Thursday March 7, at the Calaboose Grill from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Candidates for Trustee for Ward 1 and 2, Karl Jantz and Eric Yetter will be there along with incumbent Rebuild Owego Party members, Mayor Kevin Millar, Trustee Jenny Ceccherelli and Trustee Phoebe Morris. Karl Jantz and Eric Yetter are running for Village of Owego Trustee as Rebuild Owego Party candidates in the March 19 Village Election. Karl Jantz is a lifelong resident of Owego and grew up on McMaster Street. Karl recently bought a house that was flooded on East Front Street and is renovating it. He knows firsthand what flood recovery takes. Karl wants to serve on the Village Board to help others and the village recover.
