News Radio WEBO Hires News & Sports Director

News Radio WEBO has a new voice on the air. The Radigan Broadcasting Group is pleased to announce the hiring of Clint Narramore as News an d Sp o rts Directo r.

Clint comes to the area with experience as a News Reporter and Sports Play-by-Play Announcer. He will be responsible for managing the station’s strong local news and sports presence in the community, as well as reporting on local stories, anchoring the afternoon news, and continuing to provide the area’s most extensive live local sports coverage.

Clint is excited to join the team at News Radio WEBO and says he looks forward to “working and living in such a friendly community with a great hometown feeling.” He is eager to begin broadcasting local high school sports in the Southern Tier, which will start with baseball and softball next month on WEBO. Station owner Dave Radigan will

continue to host the WEBO Morning Show on a permanent basis with Lew Sauerbrey, weekdays from 6 to 9 AM. Clint will begin hosting a live afternoon show, expanding the stations live local presence from 3 to 7 PM on weekday afternoons.

“Clint’s background, work ethic, drive and determination are an excellent addition to the staff,” Radigan says. “We are excited to welcome him aboard, and continue to grow as we move into our 5th year of ownership,” Radigan stated.

Clint, a proud former active Marine, is a Veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He says that since he has moved to the area, he has been welcomed by everyone he has met.

Clint is a graduate of the Ohio Center for Broadcasting where he was awarded for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting. Clint says he is excited to make Owego, and the Southern Tier his home.

Easter Egg Hunt in Apalachin

The Apalachin Lions Club will hold their 56th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 16, starting at 1:00 pm behind the TLC-BOCES School on Pa Ave. The children will hunt for eggs marked with certain numbers.

Children who find the specially marked eggs will win prizes.

Children who do not win a prize will be able to redeem their eggs for a chocolate bunny. The Apalachin Lions Club also will hold an Eye Screening. Tioga County Sheriff Dept will provide free kids ID’s. Rain date is April 23.

Tioga Downs Sixth Season - May 7 - Sept 10 Tioga Downs has announced its sixth racing season for 2011 starting on May 7 and ending on September 10.

There will be 61 days of racing this season. Post time is 6:50 pm on Friday and Saturday with a Sunday post time of 1:30pm except for May 30 and July 4 with a post time of 1:30pm. For a complete listing of race dates and times go to www.TiogaDowns.com

Chicken and Biscuits Dinner to Benefit Youth Programs Well it’s time to get out your bibs and have some chicken and biscuits.

Don’t worry about eating utensils, as we have plenty to go around. The dinner is coming to the Apalachin United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on April 9th. The dinner starts at 4:30 and ends at 6:30. We will serve the same menu as last year, Chicken and Biscuits, mashed pota-

toes, carrots, cole slaw, the usual drinks and dessert. The prices will be, Adults-$7.50, Children 6 to 12$4.00, with children under 6 being free.

The dinner proceeds will be used to support the church’s youth programs such as Sky Lake Camperships, Kingdom Bound, Vacation Bible School, and more.

Vendors Needed for Craft Fair The Owego Rotary Club is sponsoring the “3rd Annual Arts, Antiques and Craft Fair”, Sunday, November 20, from 8-3, at the Elk’s Lodge in Owego. They are currently looking for talented artists and crafts persons as vendors for the craft show.

Also happening that day is the Elk’s Emporium in the lower hall and a chicken BBQ. Applications are available at the Tioga County Council on the Arts vestibule on Front Street in Owego, and you may also contact Janelle Malia, jelmalia@stny.rr.com, for more information.

Craft Fair The United Methodist Women of the Apalachin United Methodist Church, 303 Pennsylvania Avenue, Apalachin, NY will be holding a Spring Craft Fair on April 16, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Crafts of all sorts will be sold by local vendors.

A bake sale will also take place and lunch is available.

OPEN HOUSE Campville Fire Department will be hosting an Open House on Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10. A tour of the station will be available to the public. Applications will be available for anyone wishing to join us. Volunteers are needed for our 24/7 shift, 365 days a year. There are many jobs available and we can find a place for you anywhere in the department. Also, young members, age 16 to 18, are welcome to join as an apprentice. If you are interested in joining our squad, a 16 year old can take the Certified First Responder Class and be-

come part of the ambulance crew. We offer guidance and training to all our volunteers.

TRAINING Members were able to engage in an auto extrication drill at Station 2 this month after the snow had melted and the vehicles became visible. When the weather was not cooperative members performed a drill inside for water supply. Drills help members to review procedures, learn procedures and work as a team.

Our members drill together once a week.

Campville will be hosting a NYS Water Rescue Ops course on April 30 and May 1. Call the Bureau of Fire to register and join us for training.

Sales Tax Exemption for Clothing and Shoes Assembly Gary Finch has announced that as of April 1, the State of New York once again started exempting its share of sales tax (4%) on clothing and shoes. The exemption will apply to items valued under $55 until April 1, 2012, when it will apply to clothing and shoes under $110.

The exemption was suspended in October of 2010 in an attempt to get

more tax revenue into the state’s coffers, noted Finch.

“This sales tax exemption will provide families a welcome break from the usual taxation that New York imposes on them,” said Finch.

“As summer approaches, this is the perfect opportunity for families to update their wardrobes and get the new clothing and shoes they may need.”

Nearly three-quarters of the Dedicated Fund is spent on functions that have nothing to do with road and bridge repairs.

This bill phases out over five years the use of the Dedicated Fund for non-road and bridge expenses and prohibits it from being used that way in the future.

Tioga Downs is proud to announce that with the opening of live racing in 2011, the condition sheet will reflect a 10% purse increase across the board.

Tioga Downs is proud to announce that they will host a 61 day race meet in 2011 that kicks off on Saturday, May 7, 2011 (Kentucky Derby Day) and continues through Saturday, September 10.

This will mark the sixth year that Tioga Downs opens its doors for the much anticipated race season in Nichols, New York. Tioga will continue with its Friday, Saturday, and Sunday race schedule and will also race on eight Mondays in 2011. The marquee event of the race season at Tioga Downs, the Fifth An-

nual Drivers’ Championship, has been moved back later in the year for 2011 and will now fall on Sunday, August 28.

The Drivers’ Championship will cohighlight one of the biggest race days for the Empire State with the $420,000E Zweig Memorial Trot. Another date to mark on the Tioga Downs’ calendar is Monday, August 1st as Tioga Downs has been given the honor of taking part in the World Drivers’ Championship.

Drivers from all over the world including Australia, Denmark, and New Zealand will compete in a five round Championship on five different tracks on the east coast. Tioga Downs will be the second round of the championship on Monday, August 1st with a post time of 6:00 pm.

“We are looking forward to August 28, as we feel it is going to be one of the biggest race days that we have ever had at Tioga. The Drivers’ Championship paired up with the Zweig is going to be a great day for fans to be in Nichols, New York to watch the sports best drivers and horses compete for a lot of money” said Settlemoir.

Registration for Ages 3-5 At St Patrick School St. Patrick School in Owego has openings for 3-year-olds as well as limited Pre-K openings for ages 4 and 5. The school is located at 309 Front Street in the village of Owego, and serves students of all faiths from ages 3 through fifth grade.

The Weltonville Fire Company recently took possession of a 1998 Ford Ambulance for use as a first response vehicle. This vehicle was donated by Berkshire EMS Inc. to replace a vehicle that was no longer serviceable. Weltonville uses the vehicle for first response EMS, to carry low angle rescue equipment, water rescue, auto extrication and equipment for fire fighter rehab. Being geographically isolated, the Weltonville Fire District (Candor District 2) relies on the First Responders to provide stabilizing EMS care until a transport capable ambulance arrives from another district. The first responders are specially trained firefighters who in addition to participating in fire suppression can also execute rescues, extricate accident victims, and assist the haz mat team in decontamination of victims of a hazardous material incident,

and provide basic life support EMS including CPR and defibrillation. The versatility of these firemen and women is an asset to the community they serve. The training of these firefighters in provided without any additional taxpayer money being spent.

We rely on grants, donations and fundraisers to fund educational activities and for specialized equipment purchases. We currently have 4 EMT level and 4 Certified First Responder level personnel providing service. We are proud to have been able to provide this additional service since 1979 and we greatly appreciate the generosity of our neighboring departments for their assistance.

When the five Girl Scouts in Troop 76 from Whitesville heard about the March 11 earthquake and Tsunami in Japan, they were concerned.

The girls recently represented Japan at a World Thinking Day celebration. As part of their study of traditional Japanese culture, they learned to fold paper cranes. The girls had learned that Japanese Girl Scouts folded and sent thousands of paper cranes to New York to show their goodwill and sympathy after the 9/11 attacks in 2001. The crane, said to live for a thousand years, is symbolic of good luck, hope and world peace.

Therefore the girls decided they wanted to help out and try to do the same for the Girl Scouts in Japan.

The policy by Girl Scouts of the USA that prohibits Girl Scouts from raising money for other organizations has been temporarily suspended in order for Girl

Scouts to support the relief efforts. This is why the girls decided that instead of trying to mail 1,000 paper cranes to Japan, they would fold a thousand cranes and sell them for $1 each and send a check, along with a picture of them with the cranes, to Japan.

The Ti-Ahwaga Community Players will present Terrence McNalley’s Tony award winning play "Master Class" on Apr. 8, 9, 10, and Apr. 15, 16, 17, at the Ti-Ahwaga Performing Arts Center, 42 Delphine St., Owego, NY. "Master Class" was inspired by a series of vocal master classes conducted at Juilliard by celebrated soprano Maria Callas in 1971-72.

McNally uses the classes as a starting point for relating the person, soul and core of Callas, whose art, fame, vocal accomplishments, tempestuous rivalries, fall from grace, and ill-fated love affair with Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis are legendary.

Director James Osborne is taking a high-road approach to the production by presenting Callas, who was often referred to as 'La Divina' and considered by many one of the greatest opera divas of the past century, as an emotionally flawed and highly vulnerable individual.

“Each one of the three students that she coaches throughout the show serve to bring out the turmoil and conflict that simmers beneath the larger than life persona that the illustrious artist projects. In flashback, Callas delivers the most revealing and poignant moments in her life that cannot help but

bring the audience to a heartfelt and deeper understanding of this great artist whose life and art were so tragically cut short,” Osborne said.

The production is further enhanced with memorable musical moments by area opera singers and on-screen projections of Callas and her life.

Soprano Andrea Gregori will portray Callas. Her three students will be portrayed by soprano Jana Kucera, tenor Matt Vavalle, and soprano Maria Aimoniotis. Pianist Heather Ingraham will provide accompaniment, and Joe Schmieg will portray a stage hand.

Shows start at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. General admission is $18.

Friday admission for students with ID cards is $10. Sunday admission for seniors 60 and over is $15. Fine wines, beers, soft drinks and snacks are available to enjoy at your table during the show, and there isn't a bad seat in the house.

School Budget Propose Position Cuts The Owego Apalachin School District has presented their proposed budget for 2011-12 school year. They are proposing to eliminate 45 positions. These are in teaching and support staff. Why is it that there are never any proposals to eliminate administration positions? How about the administrators taking a pay cut.

Other places to look at saving money is in the district newspaper (and its staff) that is produced and mailed out at a cost that the taxpayers just can’t afford anymore. The district hasn’t even figured how to mail at an affordable rate, they are still using standard business class instead of non-profit class, costing the taxpayers thousand of dollars extra each year. That’s ok, it’s not their money!

After all the same information could be given to other newspapers in the area

and would be published at no cost to the district. And what about all those buses running around with few or no passengers, let’s save a little gas. Maybe it’s time to change some schedules to merge bus routes, or work with other districts.

Some districts have even gone so far as to create positions for retired politicians, what a waste of taxpayer dollars.

It’s time to cut the fat, give our children what they need, a good education.

After all it’s for the kids.

After years of hearing school officials use the expression “it’s for the kids” I figured out what the mean by that. They mean to say “it’s for the kids to pay for later.” Anyone who has children who are now grown up and are now tax payers, your kids are now paying. Next it will be our grandchildren who will pay.

37th AMBA Blood Screening Event The 37th Annual AMBA Blood Screening Event sponsored by the Susquehanna Chapter, New York State Women , INC. (formerly Owego BPW) will be held May 7 and 14, 2011.

This community project started in the Spring of 1974 when the club held the first AMBA Screening in the Grange Hall on Glenmary Drive. Soon the Grange Hall wasn't able to accommodate the growing participation of the community. The club then moved the event to the Owego Methodist Church and used their Fellowship Hall. As the low cost AMBA screening proved to be great value for the people of the community and continued to grow, it moved to the Owego High School on Elm Street and finally to the Owego Apalachin Elementary School, on Christa Mcauliffe Lane.

The AMBA screening is a valuable tool with results mailed to you and your doctor; blood is drawn by licensed phlebotomists and analyzed by certified lab technicians. Patients are comforted to get back a normal blood work level report or finding abnormalities such as anemia, high blood sugar level, poor kidney and liver function can be identified. Early detection allows for attention to potential illnesses before they become chronic.

The Susquehanna Chapter, New York State Women Inc. would like to thank the community for it’s support for 37 years and your ongoing support. The $5.00 donation that is collected goes into the club’s general fund and is the basis for which the organization can give six High School senior’s in our county a scholarship.

Always On Sunday Concert

The Community Care Network of Nichols, a trusted community asset since 1999, provides a central point of connection for neighbors to reach out and help neighbors in need. A private nonprofit organization, incorporated in 2001, CCNN provides social support services, at no cost, including: information and referral, transportation, escort to health care appointments, shopping for or with clients, and friendly visits and phone calls. In its effort to enhance the quality of life for our residents, CCNN also partners with other human service agencies to identify gaps and roadblocks to

Ithaca College professor and organ scholar Dr. Leon W. Couch III will perform a solo recital on Sunday, April 17, at 3:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Union Church, Corner of North Avenue and Temple Street in Owego.

Dr. Couch will present a program of classical works including pieces

by Bach, Pachelbel and Vierne.

Couch’s performance will be enhanced by the Presbyterian Church’s

needed services and works to help bridge them. Recently, CCNN has made the commitment to help serve more of our neighbors. CCNN is working with individuals in the Southside Owego and Tioga Center areas to develop similar programs in these communities. In this year of 2011, as resources continue to shrink and needs multiply, CCNN commits its time and resources to help find creative and cost effective ways to enhance the health of our community members across the lifespan.

Celebrate Strawberries at the Tioga County Historical Society this June The Tioga County Historical Society will be holding their 5th “Artful Berry” exhibit and contest this June and is seeking art entries. In honor of Owego’s Strawberry Festival, the artwork must be strawberry-themed.

All formats are accepted. There is no cost to enter. They encourage participation from every age group and welcome group submissions. Ages 12-18 are eligible to take part in the art contest. The winners will be announced on June 18th during the

Strawberry Festival. Submissions for Artful Berry are due to the museum

by Saturday, May 28. Participation forms are available on the society’s web site www.tiogahistory.org and at the museum on 110 Front Street, Owego, NY 13827.

Senior of the Year Nominations Sought May is Older Americans Month throughout the nation. In keeping with tradition, Tioga Opportunities, Inc., Department of Aging Advisory Council annually honors a Senior Citizen selected from applications submitted by the Community at large. The Advisory Council is accepting applications through FRIDAY, April 15, 2011 and will select a winner, to be honored at a special luncheon on Wednesday, May 18, 2011.

The Tioga County Senior Citizen of the Year Award is given to a Tioga County resident, age 60 or older, who stands out in the community for ongoing devotion of time and talent in a variety of areas. The nominee must receive no remuneration for his or her community service, and he or she does not have to be a member of a senior club or organization. The judges will select the winner solely on the basis of significant and varied contribution to the community at

large. Nomination forms are available by calling 607-687-4120.

Completed nominations should be mailed to: Tioga Opportunities, Inc., Department of Aging, 9 Sheldon Guile Boulevard, Owego, NY 13827, and must include the nominee’s name, address, telephone number, and all community achievements. A biography is appreciated.

Local pianist to perform at Tioga County Historical Society for 3rd Friday Art Walk Local pianist Vanessa LaDue will perform at the Tioga County Historical Society Museum at 110 Front Street, Owego, on April 15, 2011 from 5:30 – 7pm.

Vanessa has performed at a variety of social events in Owego and the Valley (Sayre, Athens, and Waverly). She studied piano under Marcella Chaykosky, was the organist at St. Josephs Church in Athens before its consolidation, and is a current member of the Madrigal Choir of Binghamton. Vanessa also plays the flute and is working on a CD of original music at Platinum Productions in Elmira, NY. Contact Vanessa at nessieizard@hotmail to check her availability.

Vanessa also graced the museum with her holiday selections during the 2010 O Tannenbaum bid night reception.

The Tioga County Historical Society is pleased to have Vanessa return to perform this April. Owego Easter Son-Rise Service!

The First Baptist Church and Abide In The Vine will hold an "Easter Son-Rise Service" at 7 am on Easter Sunday, April 24, at the Owego Treadway Inn, Williamsburg Room.

Good music and worship and devotionals led and presented by a number of Owego churches. Hear the "Easter Trumpets!"

The service is followed by an Easter breakfast buffet at Abide In The Vine Fellowship on Taylor Road. All is free, but an offering will be received.

With the organization skills of: Pat Halstead taking care of food, Patti Reichart, Debb Roberts & Sandy Jordan keeping track of the money, Peggy & Adrienne Matta collecting the raffle donations, Shannon Starkweather for being the lead shaver and organizing the barbers/stylists and Trish Engelhard’s hand in knowing people in the music world to keep the day in beat.
