Southern Tier Challenger, Vestal Little League Parade for Opening Day
The 2012 season is in full swing at the Southern Tier Challenger League. On Saturday, April 28, Southern Tier Challenger League and Vestal Little League teams gathered at the Vestal Town Hall at 8:45 am for the annual parade at 9:00 am to the fields for the Opening Ceremonies. The Southern Tier Challenger League is a baseball program for children and youth, ages 6-21, who have physical, developmental or intellectual disabilities within the Southern Tier of New York and Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. No disability is too great to keep a child from participating in the sport of baseball in the Southern Tier.
New players were registered on opening day, but additional sign-ups will be taken on Sunday, May 6, in front of Vestal Wal-Mart from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Thanks to sponsors, cost is only $10 per family; however no one is turned away if this is a hardship. A fun year-end picnic will be held in July, where each team member receives a trophy. Live Racing and Derby Fest at Tioga Downs - May 5
Tioga Downs Casino in Nichols will host Derby Fest 5 on Saturday, May 5, celebrating the 138th Kentucky Derby live from Churchill Downs. Also on May 5, Tioga Downs will officially kick -off of the 2012 Live Harness Racing Season. This year Tioga Downs has another reason to have a party, Cinco De Mayo. On top of having Mint Juleps, there will be Margarita's, a Sombrero Hat contest, and the ever popular Kentucky Derby Hat Contest. The day begins with simulcast racing from Churchill Downs starting at 10:30 am. Guests can watch and wager on all the races leading up to the 138th Run for the Roses (post time approximately 6:24pm). Tioga Downs live harness racing season kicks off with a special post-
time of 5:00 pm and will break to air the Kentucky Derby at 6:24pm. Kentucky Derby Fest 5 will be bigger and better than ever with more excitement and entertainment, including seven live performances throughout the day including an authentic Mariachi Band at 4:30 pm, and more. The Derby and Sombrero Hat Contests will be held on the track side apron at 3:00 pm with registration beginning at 2:00 pm. Wear your best Kentucky Derby or Sombrero hat for a chance at a $500 race voucher. Live harness racing will continue following the Kentucky Derby at approximately 7:00 pm, and will end with a spectacular fireworks display. Thank You
The Apalachin Lions thank everyone who helped with the highway cleanup. Usually, they collect 25 to 30 bags of trash, but this time they had 90 bags. The Lions give a special thanks to 13 students plus staff from Ross Corners Christian Academy who picked up trash on Friday, April 20, on Route 434 from BEAM Electronics to the county line. On Saturday, April 21, along with the Lions, there were five nonmembers who joined the highway cleanup. Thanks to all.
LIONS CLUB’S BROOM SALE 2012 May 7 - 10 It’s time again for the Apalachin Lions Club’s Annual Broom Sale. This is their Community Service Fund Raiser, and the money raised is returned to those in need in our community. Each year the Lions Club typically contributes over $25,000 to help local residents. But, this year the Lions are distributing an additional $10,000 or more for flood relief alone. Some of their other projects are scholarships to high school seniors, Special Olympics, highway cleanup, pre-school eye screening, Christmas Baskets, Santa Phones, Easter Egg Hunt, eye exams and glasses, emergency expense assistance, and back-to-school gift certificates. The Apalachin Lions Club is only able to serve the community because the community supports them. Please be generous in your support of their Annual Broom Sale. They will be selling door-to-door in our area over May 7, 8, 9, and 10. The items being sold include brooms, various cleaning brushes and cloths, sponges, CFL light bulbs, grill brushes, and dusters. A complete list of items with pictures and prices appears in this issue of the Community Press on page 13.

Students at Vestal's Clayton Avenue Elementary School in March collected more than $300 in spare change for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Western Broome. Relay For Life of Western Broome will be held May 19 and 20 at Sammon Field in Vestal. This year’s theme is “Wish Upon a Cure.”

Tire, Scrap Metal Cleanup in Town of Owego The Town of Owego will have a tire and scrap metal cleanup at the Owego Town Hall on Friday, May 18, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, and on Saturday, May 19, from 8:30 am to 12:00 Noon. Town of Owego and Village of Owego residential households can participate. Up to eight tires per residential household will be accepted at no charge (up to 19 inches); up to an additional eight tires will be accepted for a fee of $1.00 per tire. Tires on rims will be tak-
en at no charge and will not be included in the eight tire limit. Any tires over 19 inches will count as two tires (up to 4 tires). Additional tires may be dropped off at $2 per tire (up to 4 tires). Clean scrap metal will also be accepted at no charge. Proof of Town of Owego residency is required. The Owego Town Hall is at 2354 Route 434 in Apalachin.

Apalachin Fire Department Chicken BBQ - June 9 The Apalachin Fire Department will host its traditional “Chicken BBQ dinner on Saturday, June 9, beginning at 12:00 Noon at the Firemen's Field Days Grounds at the chicken booth where they served chicken at field days events in past years. The firemen are saddened that their Fireman’s Field Days will not be held this year. Their famous chicken dinners have been prepared by “Mr. Pat” from El Rancho De Paz for many years. He will be assisting on June 9. The traditional dinner includes baked beans, roll and choice of 2 sides:
potatoes, macaroni, or cole slaw for $8.50. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and drinks will also be available at extra charge. Pre-sale tickets are suggested and will be available at the Apalachin Pharmacy or the Vestal Dollar store. Look for your Apalachin Firefighters at the Tioga Terrace Garage sale on May 19. PlayYard Concepts Child Care Center Re-Opens PlayYard Concepts, Inc. a nonprofit child care center at 31 Barton Road in Apalachin has reopened its doors after being flooded during Tropical Storm Lee in September 2011. A portion of the child care center has been re-licensed by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and is operating to provide quality, fulltime child care to children ages 2 to 5 years old. Renovations will continue on the remainder of the building until it is
totally operational. PlayYard Concepts continues to operate their before- and after-school program at the Apalachin Elementary School. They also have a school-age summer program planned. Donations of used toys are being accepted for children ages 2 to 10 years old to replace games and playthings lost in the flood. Tax deductible receipts will be provided. Singer/Guitarist Pizzarelli in Concert in Owego Accomplished singer and guitar player John Pizzarelli will perform at the Ti-Ahwaga Performing Arts Center at 42 Delphine Street in Owego on Saturday, May 5, at 8:00 pm. Pizzarelli tours throughout the United States, Europe and Japan, performing classic pop, jazz and swing, while setting the standard for stylish modern jazz. He has cultivated a winning international career by singing classic standards and late-night ballads, and by playing sublime and inventive guitar. Using greats like Nat "King" Cole and Frank Sinatra and the songs of writers like Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen as touchstones, Pizzarelli is among the prime interpreters of the great American songbook, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing. From the Town of Owego Hickories Park is Open Hickories Park in the Town of Owego re-opened on Monday, April 23, 2012. A community staple in the Town of Owego for years, Hickories Park, which is located along the Susquehanna River, suffered much damage from flooding last year. The park is still undergoing repairs to its electric, sewer, and water systems. These utilities, along with the restrooms, are not currently available. Due to this unavailability, the campground at Hickories Park is closed to all RV and tent camping until further notice.
The Town of Owego Parks department has adopted a Carry In – Carry Out Trash Program. Trash receptacles will no longer be available for use by the general public. Visitors to any Town of Owego park are asked to “carry out” any trash they “carry in”. This approach will help reduce operating costs, improve the appearance of the parks, and help reduce pest related issues such as bees, skunks, and other animals. Please help in keeping your parks clean and safe.

5K Run and Kids' 1 Mile Fun Run at Strawberry Fest in June This year's Strawberry Festival in Owego will feature the 1st Annual "Strawberry Shake" 5K Run/Walk and "The Shortcake" 1 Mile Fun Run for Kids. Both events will take place on Friday, June 15. The Kids' Fun Run, which is for ages 6 to 12, will begin at 5:30 pm. The 5K Run will begin at 6:00 pm. The starting point for both runs is Draper Park on Front Street in Owego. To be guaranteed a free T-shirt for the first 200 registrants, pre-registrations
must be received no later than June 8. Pre-registration fee for the 5K is $15. Pre -registration fee for the Kids' Run is $5. On the day of the events, the fees are $20 for the 5K and $7 for the Kids' Run. All proceeds from both runs will benefit the Tioga County Historical Society and the Gateway Community Park. Lalor Dental Offers Day of Free Dentistry On Saturday, May 5, Lalor Creekside Dental will provide a day of free dental care for those in need. Dear Editor, We are amazed by what we can accomplish when we all put our heads together. At our 3rd Annual St. Baldrick’s event, at The American Legion in Candor, NY, we shaved 65 heads. Even more exciting is the $36,800 (and still counting) our volunteers raised to find cures for childhood cancer! The organizing committee would like to thank everyone who helped make this event a huge success. Reynolds Earns Eagle Scout Award Andrew Reynolds, son of William and Rosemary Reynolds of Apalachin, has earned the Eagle Scout Award, the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers. Andrew will be recognized at a Court of Honor on May 4 at Our Lady of Sorrows. Andrew's Eagle Scout project included designing, constructing and installing six park benches at the Binghamton's Ross Park Zoo, as well as planting perennial gardens and marking the mileage of the walking trails throughout the zoo. Andrew is a senior at Vestal High School, a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, and is active in soccer and track. In the fall, he will attend Marywood University pursuing a major in Architecture.

The Apalachin Fire Department responded to a house fire at 522 Jewett Hill Road in Apalachin just after 3:00 pm on Easter Sunday, April 8. They were assisted by fire departments from Campville, Owego, and South Side. The house was a total loss but no injuries were reported. The fire was started by an electrical problem near a hot tub.

TC Hawks Win Championship

On Saturday, May 19, there will be a Benefit Spaghetti Luncheon and Auction on behalf of well known local artist and sign painter Tim Tarbox. The event will be held at the Owego Elks Lodge at 223 Front Street in Owego beginning at 12:00 Noon. Tim recently returned home from Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City after receiving a heart valve replacement on January 29, 2012. In August 2011, Tim had surgery to repair an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Such major surgeries, back to back, have left Tim unable to practice his craft at this time. He continues to progress toward a hoped for complete recovery. This benefit will allow his many friends, clients and fellow artists to contribute, in a real way, to Tim’s ability to
return to work. The Live Auction will begin at 2:00 pm with Jim Mead as auctioneer. There will also be raffles, door prizes, a bake sale and a 50-50 drawing. Items that have already been donated for the auction include works of art by local artists, themed gift baskets, gift certificates and other surprises. Of special interest will be a new, quality bicycle donated by Babcock Bicycles of Endicott. Contributed works of art are available for viewing at The Black Cat Gallery, 190 Front Street, Owego. April 25, 2012 Dear Editor, Seems some folks still don’t get it! There is “NO AXE TO GRIND” when it comes to the dedicated teachers in the Owego Apalachin School System, period! The taxpayers and those of us who are asking the tough questions of our Board and Administration have the utmost respect for our teachers and seek to preserve their positions and programs for the good of our students. Our goal is zero reductions in teachers and zero reduction in student programs. We believe this is an achievable goal. For the umpteenth time the teachers did not create the fiscal crisis OACSD is in today. Quite to the contrary, our teachers and employees bargaining units recently demonstrated their willingness to be part of the solution by agreeing to wage freezes and give backs. The “TEAM” (those folks) who came up with the intelligent compromise of giving the teachers their negotiated annual increase and then have them vote (agree) to use this year’s increase to offset the spiraling costs of their healthcare was brilliant! Your actions paved the way (if you live here) for you and your neighbors to avoid another increase in your tax levy, saving you tax dollars for years to come. Thank you! Avocado, The Mystery Veggie By Chef Nick Cavataio I have to admit avocado is a fruit that has been a mystery to me. Because of its shape, color, texture and the few times that I tasted it 35 years ago I really never gave this wonderfully nutritional super food a chance. Now after doing a little research I understand it has been my loss. I will certainly be experimenting with an assortment of recipes for this amazingly healthy fruit. Some "experts" might say avocadoes are bad for you because of their calorie and fat content WRONG - Avocadoes are great health booster. • Anti-Inflammatory - Avocadoes have a wonderful blend of healthy characteristics including Vitamins C and D, zinc, selenium, phytosterols, carotenoids and omega-3 fatty acids which all help reduce inflammation. So, let's go for a more steady diet of avocadoes and cut back on the arthritis. • Strengthened Eyesight - Avocadoes, also called "Alligator Pears" because of their color, texture and shape have copious amounts of carotenoids. The more popular superstars in this family of nutrients as we know them are beta-carotene, alpha-carotene and lutein. It's also good to know that as you enjoy eating this fruit, you're giving a healthy boost to your reproductive and immune systems.
• Heart Benefits - Now let's talk about the fat content. Avocados are rich in oleic acid which is a very friendly fatty acid. Research has shown oleic acid is an excellent source for healthier heart. The fat in avocadoes, like olive oil is a good for HDL cholesterol level and at the same time knocks down the LDL levels. • Packed with Protein - We all know beef is a good source of protein and I'll be the first to admit that I occasionally enjoy a medium cut of roasted prime rib with lots of beef broth. The only problem is, beef in general does not digest very well. Along with beans, broccoli, spinach, artichokes and potatoes, avocado is packed with protein. Because of its fiber content avocado is super friendly to the digestive system. Avocado is a great substitute for animal source protein. • Shopping and Preparing - Look for avocadoes that are firm but not hard when holding them. Most of the nutrients in the avocado are just under the skin, carefully cut the skin away from the fruit. As I mention I do not have much experience with this particular super healthy fruit YET. I'm anxious to get started in the trying a variety of avocado recipes and hope you do the same.
United Way Annual Awards The Tioga United Way held its Annual Awards Banquet at Tioga Downs Racing & Entertainment on April 12. Jason Settlemoir, Vice-President of Tioga Downs and the 2012 Tioga United Way Campaign Chairperson, presided at the dinner. Awards were presented to LockheedMartin MS2, Tioga Downs, Tioga State Bank, Visions Federal Credit Union, IBM, Tioga County Employees, and Franziska Racker Centers. Special recognition was give to organizations that provided flood relief support to Tioga United Way as part of the agency’s Flood Relief Fund campaign. Awards for significant financial contributions were presented to Mark Lynch, President of NYSEG and representing NYSEG’s parent company, Iberdrola USA; Jason Settlemoir, VicePresident of Tioga Downs; LockheedMartin MS2; NBT Bank; and Dominion Transmission. Flood relief awards were also given to Brian Secora and Caroline Basso of WSKG for sponsoring a flood relief telethon which raised more than $40,000 for Tioga County
residents. Tom Ehret of Olum’s of Binghamton was recognized for the financial consideration given to Tioga United Way on heaters, dehumidifiers, fans and refrigeration appliances for food pantries during the flood emergency. A Certificate of Appreciation was given to the Caring Quilters Project. Since 2004, they have made more than 5,028 quilts and crocheted blankets and 429 Teddy Bears which Tioga United Way donated to those in need through Tioga Opportunities, A New Hope Center and Riverview Nursing Home. A Certificate of Appreciation award was given to Pucky Huddle Delight Quilt Shop in Candor for their “Flood Tioga with Quilts” project. Pucky Huddle quilters have donated more than 50 quilts to families in need. The winners for individual donations to the Tioga United Way Campaing are Brian Cain from the Tioga County Probation Department who won the $2500 Grand Prize, and Adam Jung of Lockheed Martin who won the $1500 First Prize.

Help Clean Up Tioga's Streams The Tioga County Water Coordinating Committee will hold its 12th Annual Stream Cleanup May 12 through May 19. If you are interested in cleaning up your environment or improving your community, register with the Tioga County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD). You can select any stream with the county to cleanup, or one will be assigned to you. Trash bags and gifts will be provided to all participants. Open House at Catholic Charities in Nichols A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and an Open House will be held at the Catholic Charities Tioga Outreach Center on Friday, May 4. Some of the things that are most useful are book, tools, baby and children's items, DVDs, household items, sporting goods, or anything that you may find at a yard sale. The Angels are a group of teens who collect or purchase items to package and send to our troops in harm's way. •Historical Calendars for 2013 Good News! The Little Meadows and Apolacon Township 2013 historical calendars are now on sale. The calendars are full of old pictures of people and places, along with a little history from the area. The calendars also include some old photos from Apalachin. A Prayer Service by Pastor Paul Reed will begin at 7:30 pm. During the hours the sanctuary is open, there will be soft music playing. On the top of each hour,

OA School Budget Dear Editor, Help Wanted: OACSD Registered Residents to vote May 15, 2012. We’ve been trying to make the facts and figures available to the public concerning the OACSD school budget. The budget has been reduced to $40,630,767 down from last year’s approved budget of $41,051,045. We will see a Zero (0) percent tax increase due to additional state aid of $262,044. It’s good to see that the OA BOE realizes it must start living within their means like the rest of us. But don’t be complacent. From here on out it’s going to get tougher and uglier. The OA School District Registered Residents must stay vigilant. Many thanks go to the four (4) OA Board members who voted for the Zero (0) percent tax increase. It’s sad to think that two (2) OA Board members couldn’t find their way clear to vote FOR the Zero (0) tax increase instead of AGAINST. Owego Apalachin residents need relief whether from the flood or otherwise. My opinion is no one could receive enough relief for the flood that devastated so many nor the ever increasing taxes. There will also be a bus proposition on the ballot this year asking for four (4) new buses. It also sounds like there is going to be a bus proposition on the ballot every year asking for four (4) new buses each time. I guess the OA Residents will have to decide whether we need four (4) new buses or not. Please
watch for this on the ballot. If you recall a couple of years ago a separate vote was held for the bus proposal in December. It was stated that the voters obviously didn’t see the bus proposal on the regular ballot because the buses were voted down. Let’s make sure we send a clear message concerning the bus proposal. If the same number of budget voters marks their ballots concerning the bus proposal there won’t be any misunderstanding. Haig McNamee is running for one of the OA School Board seats. Haig’s name will be the second selection on the ballot. Please come out and vote for some fresh perspective and change. We need someone on the OA School Board who is not associated nor benefits from the School system whatsoever. Someone who can be objective and fiscally responsible. It’s time to take back control. Let’s stop “business as usual”. It’s time to elect board members who will see the forest before the trees. Please mark your calendars; show your support and come out and vote on May 15, 2012. Please don’t stay away because you think your vote doesn’t matter, it does. Show that you like the ZERO (0) % tax increase. Show what you think about ordering four (4) new buses. Welcome, Aiden James Reeves! Aiden, son of Aaron and Amanda (Brown) Reeves of Sayre, was born Saturday, April 28, 2012, at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. He is the grandson of Kenneth Reeves of Sayre, Lori Reeves of Endicott, and Fred and Janet Brown of Apalachin.
Reading Program is for the Dogs Who has more than a warm nose and heart? Comet the reading dog has two good listening ears for students at Vestal's Glenwood Elementary who are practicing their reading skills. In February, retired teacher Debora Zarr contacted Principal McSain at Glenwood Elementary and offered to bring in her dog, Comet, for one-on-one reading time with students who would benefit.
So far, the program has been a success according to McSain, who is always looking for opportunities to provide Glenwood students with authentic ways to read, write, listen and speak. She said, “The students can’t wait for their turn to read to Comet, and there is nothing better than a child who is excited about reading.”

Owego Little League Opening Day - May 5 www.eteramz.com/owego Owego Little League (OLL) opens its 61st season on Saturday, May 5, thanks to hundreds of hours by volunteers cleaning up and restoring facilities at Hyde Park after the 2011 flood. Parade Marshall John Loftus launches the parade at 8:30 am from the Temple St. to Hyde Park. Players report between 8 and 8:15. Residents along the parade route are invited to exchange greetings with the players as they march by. Twenty-eight teams - five Tee Ball, seven modified, five American, three National, three Softball American and three Softball American plus two Teener Baseball teams - will be introduced by their Vice Presidents Chris RiegBaseball, Mark Warfle-Softball and Mark Felice-Teener. Welcomes will be extended by Master of Ceremonies Jim Raftis and OLL President Ken Winters. Student/athletes from Owego Elementary and St. Patrick's School will sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" and the National Anthem. They're led by OES Second Grade Teacher Suzanne Peacock. Elks Exalted Ruler Emil Kotaser will present a new American Flag to fly 24-7 with the POW/MIA flag. Both flags will be raised by the VFW/Vietnam Veterans Color Guard. Bag Piper Rich Maloney will play while leading officials from the infield to the Elks flag pole. OLL invites all veterans to surround the flag pole. Veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq will get a special Welcome Home from all in Hyde Park. President Winters will speak from the heart to thank volunteers who did an extraordinary "Spring Cleaning" of the park. Denis McCann coordinated two Work Bee Saturdays. Accomplishments: Back-

Karen Johnson's concession stand which was under five feet of water on 09/08/11 - has been restored and ready to go for the kids and parents. Chefs Dick Franz and John Loftus will cook hamburgs and sausages on the outside grill. The Owego Fire Department will have Chef Lee Dunham do a chicken and pork BBQ to raise funds for the new Firemen's Training Facility. Sixteen games will be played on Opening Day - 5 each at 10:30, 1:00, and 3:30 - and one away at 2:00.
