Owego Little League Begins 62nd Season
Owego Little League opened its 62nd season on Saturday, May 4. Parade Marshall John Loftus organized 25 teams for the annual North Avenue to George Street parade. Owego Elementary School (OES) Second Grade students sang "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" and Fourth Grade students sang the National Anthem. OES Second Grade Teacher Suzanne Peacock directed the student/player/singers. Three new flags were presented: an
American flag presented by Owego Elks Exalted Ruler Tim Sayers, a POW/ MIA flag presented by the Vietnam Veterans of America, and a VFW Post 1371 Color Guard. The flags are flying 24 hours a day at the Elks flagpole which was dedicated 46 years ago. Ceremonial first pitches on Nick Raftis Memorial Field opened ASA Girls Softball and Little League. Community leaders were umpires. Fourteen home games were played.
Ribbon Cutting for Kirby Park
A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held on Saturday, May 4, to officially re-open Kirby Park in Nichols. The occasion included a parade, a chicken BBQ, and the opening day of the Nichols Little League. The destruction caused to Kirby Park by Tropical Storm Lee was enormous but, with the hard work and dedication of many Nichols residents, everyone is now able to enjoy one of Nichols'
greatest assets. Over $153,000 has been raised by way of Federal and State funding, local business grants and donations, and community contributions to aid in the restoration efforts. The only outstanding item is the removal and reconstruction of the bandstand. This project is on hold until the remainder of the FEMA funding is received.
