Keene Candidate for County Court Judge Gerald A. Keene, the Tioga County District Attorney, announced his candidacy for the position of Tioga County Judge. The Honorable Vincent Sgueglia will be retiring as county Court Judge at the end of this year. Keene, 56, has been District Attorney since 1999, having been elected to the position in four elections over the past twelve years. He previously held the positions of Assistant District Attorney since 1985 and Assistant Public Defender from 1981 to 1985. In making his announcement Keene said: "I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve the people of my home County for over 30 years, and I look forward with enthusiasm and honor at the opportunity to continue to serve in the capacity of County Court Judge." "Tioga County is my hometown," he continued, "I was born and raised right here in Waverly and there is a special place in my heart for our people." "Being a trial attorney in Tioga County for over 30 years has allowed me to learn not only what is expected of a judge in the courtroom, but also what is important to the people of this County. I plan to bring my experience and strong connection to the community to the position of County Court Judge. The people of Tioga County have been very good to me and I feel a responsibility to serve the County in this very critical position."
Keene is a 1973 graduate of Waverly High School and received his undergraduate degree from Alfred University in 1977. He earned his law degree from Syracuse University College of Law in 1980. He was admitted to the New York Bar in 1981. He and his wife, Betty, live in Waverly and have two sons, Kyle and Alex. Before being elected District Attorney, Keene had his own law office in Waverly where he represented clients in general practice.
No Apalachin Field Days this year But We Still Have the CHICKEN BBQ
STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL 2012 IS ON! It's the 32nd year of the Strawberry Festival, the Southern Tier's granddaddy signature festival, an event filled with entertainment, food, craft artisans, activities, parade, strawberry shortcakes, wine tasting, FUN and everything else strawberries. Let the sun shine, so the strawberries ripen, and a good time will be had by all! The Festival changes each year, but manages to keep its small town country flavor with over 20,000 visitors in attendance. Mark your calendars - June 15 and 16, 2012, in downtown Owego, New York.
June in Apalachin will not be the same this year because there will be no Firemen's Field Days. But at least you can still enjoy the traditional Apalachin Firemen's Chicken Dinner BBQ. The chicken BBQ will be held on Saturday, June 9, starting at 12:00 Noon at the Field Day Grounds in Apalachin.

The dinner includes chicken, baked beans, roll and choice of two sides: potatoes, macaroni, or cole slaw for $8.50. Hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks will also be available at extra charge. Pre-sale tickets are suggested and will be available at the Apalachin Pharmacy or the Vestal Dollar Store.

Students Place Flags at Cemetery
Students from St. Patrick School’s fifth grade recently participated in their traditional Memorial Day placing of the flags at St. Patrick Cemetery. According to St. Patrick School Principal Paula Smith, there are hundreds of flags to be placed in cemeteries each year, and this is just the school’s small way of helping out while showing honor and respect for those that gave so much for our freedom.
In addition to placing the flags at gravesites, the students also prayed and read poems. Mr. Jim Raftis shared his thoughts on Memorial Day, and Gold Star Mother Mrs. Barbara Bilbrey shared with students the medals of her son, Army Spc. Charles Bilbrey Jr, who died in 2007 while serving in Iraq. The service concluded with everyone in attendance singing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” and “God Bless the U.S.A.”

Civil Air Patrol Cadets Jennifer Elliott (left) and Kasmier Card (right) Civil Air Patrol Cadet Master Sergeant Jennifer Elliott and Cadet Kasmier Card took to the sky on May 12 with Mission Pilots LtCol Larry Brinker and Capt Vince Monticello. Elliott, a home schooled 10th grader and Card, an Owego Apalachin 8th grader learned about aircraft ground handling, preflight and checklist procedures, flight controls and how they work, turns climbs and descents, navigation by pilotage and map reading. These orientation flights are provided to Civil Air Patrol Cadets regularly and at no cost to the cadets. The Cadet Orientation Flight Program introduces youth to general aviation through handson orientation flights in single engine
aircraft and gliders. The program’s motto describes what cadet flying is all about: “Safe, Fun, and Educational.” Civil Air Patrol’s cadet program is truly unique. Using aviation as a cornerstone, youths 12 to 20 years of age progress through a comprehensive program covering leadership, physical fitness, and aerospace education including an opportunity to solo fly an airplane through a flight encampment or academy. Students Prep for Scholarship Race at Tioga Downs Tioga Downs kicked off training for its third annual Scholarship Race on Saturday morning for five local area high school students who will take part in a scholarship harness race on Sunday, June 10. Participants from Binghamton, Chenango Forks, Chenango Valley, Johnson City, and Maine-Endwell High Schools are in the process of learning some of the tricks of the trade from some of the top drivers-trainers at Tioga Downs. Corey Braden, Jason Mac Dougall, Judy Lanpher, Jamie Paquet, and Paul Bernardo have all volunteered their time to assist in helping the high school students get a better understanding of the sport of harness racing and some of the daily care that goes into the horses. The race will take place on Sunday, June 10 at Tioga Downs in between the
live races, which will also feature the $200,00(e) Bettor’s Delight Open Pace and its counterpart the $200,000 Artiscape Pace for open mare pacers. The students will ride in a double seated jog cart with a professional driver-trainer who they have learned from for the past three weeks. Scholarships for the event will be given out in the order of finish of the race, 1st place: $3,000, 2nd place: $2,000, 3rd place: $1,200, 4th place: $800. The sponsors helping support the third annual Scholarship race are the Harness Horse Breeder’s of New York State, Southern Tier Harness Horsemen’s Association, New York Sire Stakes, and Tioga Downs. Local Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Cadets from the Broome Tioga Composite Squadron visited the prestigious West Point Military Academy on Saturday, April 28. Upon arriving they were met by West Point Cadet Captain Angela Smith, a graduate of Vestal High School. Smith is the 4th Regimental Commander, and former Civil Air Patrol Cadet Commander of the Broome Tioga Squadron. Smith took the cadets on a tour of the Military Academy which included a walk along the Hudson River to the place where the Continental Army placed a chain across the river to stop the British from sailing up river. The mounts and a piece of the large chain remain there to this day. The CAP cadets toured the academy barracks, the expansive indoor sports facility, and
residence of the First Captain, the highest ranking cadet at the Military Academy. The CAP cadets had the opportunity to see and learn about the Military Academy's virtual/laser firing weapons training facility. These laser firing training weapons fully simulate the shooting experience, including sound and recoil. "We had a great time! The Cadets were active all day, as were the Officers", said CAP LtCol William Shafer. Walking in the footsteps of Grant, Patton, MacArthur, Arnold, Eisenhower, and the like is sure to leave a lasting impression, an experience the CAP Cadets won't soon forget. There will be four large tents with a variety of items from household, childrens, some furniture, beautiful complete sets of dishes, even some tools for men, lots of costume jewelry everything but clothing.
There will also be raffle baskets donated from local merchants. This is a wonderful way to do onestop shopping and support our troops at the same time. All proceeds are used for postage and to purchase items to send to our deployed troops. To date, the Angels have sent 10 tons of snack and hygiene items to our soldiers in harm's way.

Owego Rotary Helps Food Bank The Food Bank of the Southern Tier announced that a donation was received in the amount of $1,200 from the Owego Rotary. These funds will be used to support the BackPack Program™ in Tioga County. In addition to the monetary donation, the Owego Rotary has been active with volunteering their time by collecting food donations and packing bags of food for the BackPack Program™.
The Food Bank’s BackPack Program™ provides healthy, childfriendly, and easy to prepare foods to children at risk of hunger over weekends and holiday breaks when children do not have access to free or reduced price school meal programs. During the 2010-2011 school year, the program served 19 school districts across the Southern Tier, reaching more than 1,400 children each week.

Avocado Recipes By Nick Cavataio
Avocado and Tortellini Soup 1/2 large onion, minced 3 green onion sliced thin 4 cloves roasted garlic 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 can (14-1/2 oz) diced tomatoes in juice 1 quart chicken broth 3/4 teaspoon dried basil salt & red pepper flakes to taste 1 package (9 oz) refrigerated cheese tortellini 2 ripe avocados, peeled, seeded and cubed Shredded Parmesan cheese, optional In a large skillet, sauté onion and garlic in oil 1 - 2 minutes or until onion is transparent. Place sautéed onion and garlic mixture with tomatoes in juice in a blender and blend for 30 -40 seconds. In a stockpot, combine puree mixture, chicken broth, and seasonings. Bring to a
boil. Add tortellini; return to a boil. Cook for 7 - 9 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally. Ladle hot soup in serving bowl, garnish with avocado and cheese. Serves 4 Prep Time: 20 minutes Italian Kabobs 8 (12-in.) wooden skewers soaked in water 1 lb. (1 in. cubed) marinated skinless, boneless chicken breast – grilled and chilled 3 firm-ripe avocados, halved, seeded and peeled-cut each half into 12 chunks 16 grape or cherry tomatoes 1 (8 ounce package Extra Sharp cheddar cheese) cut in 1 in. cubes 16 – 20 Greek or Kalamata olives 1 red bell pepper cubed, 1-in. pieces 1 yellow bell pepper cubed , 1in. pieces Your favorite Italian dressing Fresh Italian herbs, chopped, optional Thread each skewer with each ingredient, place skewers on a serving tray and mist lightly with your favorite Italian dressing, sprinkle with fresh Italian herbs and serve 1 kabob on a bed of red leaf lettuce. Competitions at Owego Strawberry Festival The Strawberry Festival is offering the following contests: • Strawberry Shake 5k Run/Walk & Strawberry Shortcake One Mile Fun Run Pre-registration for the 5k is $15, Fun Run is $5 and the first 200 registrants receive a t-shirt. A New World Record to be Set The theme of this year’s Festival is “Celebrate!” The strawberries are in season, and we especially have much to celebrate after last year’s record flood. Owego folks and businesses are alive and well! It’s our time to celebrate and share the fun! Help us make history! We’ve made application to the Guinness Book of Records to set a new world record for the “longest Conga line.” This is in cooperation with our local radio station, WEBO and staff, who will have a float at the end of Saturday’s parade. The radio station will be playing songs such as “Celebrate!” by Kool and the Gang, and other upbeat music, and we are asking people to come out of the crowd and JOIN US in assembling a single file Conga line to follow the float throughout the parade route! Let’s Celebrate and Have Some Fun!

WEBO Radio will lead the Conga line playing the song “Celebrate” and other upbeat music for everyone to follow. • Rubber Ducky Derby The Tioga County Council on the Arts is holding a fun rubber duck race. Purchase your rubber ducks now until right before the race from the Owego Swim Team at Owego Free Academy, 1 Sheldon Guile Blvd., or the Tioga County Council on the Arts, 179 Front Street, Owego. A single duck cost $5, Flock of 5 is $20, and a six quack is $25. First place winner will receive $100, Second and third place each get $50, and fourth-eleventh place wins $25 each. • Coloring Contest Children can enter the Chemung Canal Trust Coloring Contest, free of charge. Age groups are 5 and under, 6-9, and 10-12. Pick up and return coloring sheet at 203 Main St., Owego, by June 14. Owego Duck Derby on June 16 Tioga County Council on the Arts (TCCA) is proud to announce that a new brood of ducklings have hatched and are learning to swim for its Rubber Duck Derby on Saturday, June 16, at 4:00 pm during Owego’s Strawberry Festival. Flock to Owego's Court Street bridge and watch your adopted rubber ducky take a “Swan Dive”. The first ducky to reach the museum wins his adoptive parent $100. The next two duckies win $50 each and the next eight duckies win $25 each.
You may adopt a single duck for $5, a flock of five for $20, or a six quack for $25. Contact TCCA at 687-0785 to adopt your ducks. You can also adopt them with the help of member of the OwegoApalachin Swim Team. Ducks will also be available for adoption at the TCCA booth at 179 Front St. during the Strawberry Festival on June 16. The Duck Derby is a fundraiser for the Owego-Apalachin Swim Team and the Tioga County Council on the Arts.

Leadership Tioga is Recruiting for Fall Classes The Tioga County Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the Leadership Tioga Class for 2013. The kick off for this year's program begins on September 11 with an all-day session at Turkey Trot Acres in Candor. Leadership Tioga develop individuals for future leadership roles in our county. There is a $400 fee for the class (if paid by July 31, $450 after) and an attendance requirement. Leadership Tioga enlists candidates who live and work in Tioga County and are interested in developing their leadership skills and knowledge of community issues, as well as pursuing leadership roles in their community and career. The program consists of half-day sessions with several full day meetings.
Classes are held in various locations in Tioga County to offer participants an opportunity to experience the flavor of the county. Presentations are made on various subjects such as: Education, Human Services, Tourism/Arts and Culture, Agriculture, Volunteerism and “Vision for Tioga County. – Your Leadership Role.” On occasion, Leadership Tioga meets with leadership programs from surrounding counties for combined meetings to network and share ideas. The Skill Building Session helps identify and improve leadership skills. The 2012 Depot Friday Night Series sponsored by the Newark Valley Historical Society will begin on Friday, June 8 and continue for fifteen consecutive Friday evenings at the train depot in Newark Valley: June 8 - “Bats, where have they gone?” Dr. John Hermanson from Cornell University and the College of Veterinary Medicine will discuss the effect the White-nosed Syndrome has had on the local bat population and the potential impact on the local scene. June 15 - Reprise 60s and the fabulous songs of the 1960’s, June 22 - Randy Miritello and “The Horseshoe Lounge Playboys”, a fourpiece “roots” band performing mostly original and traditional material some call Backwood Americana, some Hillbilly dance music.
June 29 - A New Leaf Rick Marsi will present a new (digital) look at nature in the Southern Tier. Programs are free and open to the public and refreshments are available. Doors open at 6:00 pm, and programs usually begin at 7:00 pm. Weather permitting music performances will be on the Depot lawn so bring your chairs. Bring your friends and come spend Friday evenings at the Depot. Enjoy an ice cream sundae or a root beer float while listening to exciting entertainment. Historical Society Receives Award
The authors of the book History of Tioga County Schools are putting together another book and are seeking pre1950s photos of students, teachers, and memorabilia. If you can contribute photos or information, call the Historical Society at 687-2460 or email museum@tiogahistory.org.
This April, Museumwise, the statewide organization of museums, issued special Awards of Commendation to the Tioga County Historical Society (TCHS) and three other New York State museums in recognition of “extraordinary efforts in the wake of last year’s storms”, proving “themselves great champions for their collections’ care and safety.” As Museumwise staff explained, TCHS staff and volunteers’ coordinated response to the disaster inspired funding and support from state and national agencies and leveraged community engagement in their work. Executive Director Kevin Lentz accepted the award on behalf of TCHS during a ceremony in Albany on April 22.
Community Foundation Awards Grant to Museum The Community Foundation for South Central New York recently awarded a grant of up to $14,160 to the Tioga County Historical Society. This funding will cover the expenses of repairing and maintaining the Society’s elevator damaged in the September floods.
