“Owego Hose Team places in Onondaga County races.” Team has 1st, 2nd, and two 4th place finishes to bring home $225 purse.

The Owego Hose Team placed 1st, 2nd, and 4th in two races at the Onondaga County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Convention Races held in Minoa, N.Y. on June 4th. The team also was awarded “Farthest Distant Traveled” and “Oldest Apparatus” in the convention parade for a total purse of $225. Eleven teams from the Syracuse area and Owego competed in 8 races that included the equipment race; one man ladder; three man ladder; 5 man ladder; wye race; hose cart race; efficiency race; and bucket brigade. Owego placed 1st the five man ladder, 2nd in the wye, and 4th in the one man ladder and hose cart races. During the hose cart race Owego featured its 1908 Writ and Knox Hose Cart owned

by the Gavin Family. The races are timed events where firefighters test their skills. Team members must connect nozzles to hoses, hoses to hoses, and hoses to the fire hydrant, and knock down targets in the quickest time in the competitions. Hose races improve basic firefighting skills. Team members wore purple shirts reminiscent of the “Goofy Grape,” the hose team vehicle of the 1960s and 1970s. Members included Assistant Chief Jimmy Morris (Company #3), Hank Thomas (Company #3), Andy McDowell (Company #5), Tim Gavin (Mutual Aid Member), and Pat Gavin (Company #3). Coaches David Franz (Company #3) and Moe McDowell (Company #5) assisted the team.

As a part of Owego’s 3rd Friday ArtWalk, the Tioga County Historical Society museum at 110 Front Street will host a jewelry and drawing demonstration on Friday, July 15th, from 68pm. The mother-daughter design team, Andrea Melione and Alyson Melione, of Plumstead Place, will share their work and demonstrate jewelrymaking with copper and brass wire and charcoal drawing. These art forms have a long, rich history that has endured through centuries. Wire jewelry art is believed to have originated over five hundred years ago and consists of

cutting, bending, twisting, and wrapping wire to create unique wearable art pieces. The art of charcoal drawing is even older, as much of the art found in caves was created with charcoal, which is simply burnt wood. We hope you will take time to stop in and enjoy historical art forms and current museum exhibits. Admission is free, though donations are greatly appreciated. TRAINING This month our members reviewed brush fire operations along with the safety issues involved in using a chain saw. Another evening was spent with water rescue operations, going over the hazards involved and operating safely on the water. Squad training consisted of a review of the six month BLS “cme” requirements that the State mandates. WEATHER We have had our share of strange weather catastrophes during the past two months. The winds and rain brought trees and lines down making some roads impassable in the community during our last storm in May. When you drove through the areas the damage was devastating. We have been fortunate

not to have any fatalities and the community has been coping with all the cleanup efforts. Thank you for your cooperation in staying off the roads and staying away from downed power lines. THE SEARCH Campville was one of the departments who helped with the Search and Rescue in Newark Valley. The search ended good with the woman being found safe in the early morning hours and the dog returned home the following day. EAGLE SCOUT Congratulations to Campville apprentice, Jacob Sells, on his Eagle Scout Award. We wish everyone a safe and happy 4th of July.

There is fun for the whole family at Triple Cities Street Rods’ “Cars in the Park”. Although the location had to be changed from Hickories Park, Owego to Field Day Dr. Apalachin NY , there will still be cars, trucks, and cycles of all years and makes to see on July 9 & 10. They’re planning some new activities, including: a tractor demonstration, slow drags, and Saturday Top 10 awards. As always there are food and craft vendors for a variety of tastes. Kids activities include a bounce house, wooden

cars to paint/race, coloring contest, water balloon toss and cake walk. Saturday evening bring a lawn chair, relax, and enjoy the “Dirig Brothers Band” 6 to 10 pm. Sunday the Zoomobile comes and the Chinese auction is open to everyone. All proceeds and donations go to local charities. Come join the fun on July 9-10 at Field Day Dr, Apalachin NY. The 3rd Annual Little Miss Nichols and Little Miss Shine Competition sponsored by the ROKI Community Club of Nichols will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the Nichols United Methodist Church Hall on Main Street. Proceeds from the event will benefit the club and their functions in the town of Nichols and surrounding community. The Little Miss Nichols Competition is not the typical glitz and glamour pageant. In the spirit of the Nichols ROKI, the competition is geared toward promoting town

pride and community outreach while giving contestants a chance to shine in the spotlight. Each contestant will be asked to tell the audience why Nichols is such a special place to live. Girls age 8-12 are invited to enter Little Miss Nichols and girls age 4-7 are invited to compete in the Little Miss Shine competition. They must be residents of Nichols to enter. To make the pageant fun and accessible to all, the entry fee is only $25, formal dress is not required and everyone who participates will receive a trophy. Winners will receive a beautiful crown, trophy and sash of office. Their first public appearance will be at the Nichols Old Home Day on Labor Day where they will get to ride in the parade and greet the crowd from the bandstand at Kirby Park as the festivities commence. They may also participate in various service opportunities and make appearances on behalf of the Nichols ROKI throughout the year. Pageant Organizer, Sue Tracy, is the daughter of former Town Board Member Horst Wagner who served with the Nichols ROKI Community Club for many years before he passed away last year. As part of Candor’s Bicentennial Celebration, the Candor Chamber of Commerce is hosting the fashion show of the century, and requests the honor of your presence. Wedding Gowns of Yesterday is a collection of some forty -plus gowns that will be on display, or modeled by high school students, at the Candor Congregational Church, 134 Main Street Candor, on Saturday July 16, starting at 2:00 p.m. Gowns to be presented include wedding gowns, veils, bridesmaid’s gowns, and flower girl dresses that were worn by women living in Candor and the surrounding areas fifty and one -hundred years ago today! Fabric, style of neckline, sleeves, train, and the various veils will be of interest as styles changed over the years with the changing times. Evelyn Hovey Richards of Syracuse and formerly of Candor has loaned the gown of her maternal grandmother, Flora Wilcox. Miss Wilcox wore a two -piece burgundy faille taffeta gown for her marriage to George A. Warn, Dec. 18, 1889; Little York, New York. The jacket has an insert at the bodice of a matching silk print, as do the cuffs on the long sleeves. The skirt has a very intricate array of pleats and shirring. It is interesting to note that Flora Wilcox Warn also wore this dress at her daughter's wedding, Pearl Warn, to Rev. Luke W. Hovey, on March 23, 1918. The Rev. Luke Hovey was Pastor of the Methodist Church in Candor in the 1940 era. Also, on display, a handmade gown of dotted Swiss, for the September 1941 wedding of Clara Robinson to

John Yost at St. Mark's in Candor. The bride was the daughter of Clifton and Louise Ward Robinson. The gown had a sweetheart neckline, bouffant skirt with modified train. The date of the wedding, October 12, 1886. The cream color gown was worn by Mary A. Booth for her marriage to John P. Fiebig in Candor. The Fiebigs lived in the large house across from the present Candor Grange Hall. There will be a Mystery Bride, modeling her own gown from long ago. Veterans Thank OFA Band Director and Marching Band

Veterans thank the OFA Band director Dan Fabricius and the OFA Marching Band for their Memorial Day Parade support. The presentation was scheduled for Memorial Day at the Tioga County Veterans Memorial. But the Thank You plaque needed an icon for the Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. All Star Sports received it after the Memorial Day parade. Memorial Day Chairman Jim Raftis said the veterans wanted the entire band to be present for the special ceremony of thanks and appreciation. So the veterans went

to the OFA Marching Band practice in the OFA parking lot before the Strawberry Festival parade. Glenn A. Warner Post 1371 Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander Angelo Pattitucci presented the Thanks and Appreciation Plaque to OFA Band Director Dan Fabricius, Drummer Keegan Evans and Assistant Band Director Andy Kearney. Back from Iraq, welcome home, SSG Joe Hodges! This message was delivered, loud and clear, by The Phillies an AYAA Little League team, at their June 17th game against The Twins. Nate Hodges, 11 year old son of Joe and Natalie, primarily played at 1st base for The Phillies. SSG Hodges threw out the first pitch of the game and led The Phillies in the post-game handshake while players and coaches of both teams proudly waved the Stars and Stripes! Families and fans joined in a rousing standing ovation.

SSG Hodges, a United States Army Reservist, served eleven months in Iraq and arrived home on June 5, 2011. Joe will return to his job at Lockheed Martin Corporation, Owego, NY in mid-July. The Phillies also give a huge shout out to Mrs. Hodges and to the Hodgesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; three children Nate, Christian and Anna. Hiking for Helping Hands

Hiking for Helping Hands achieves astounding results for the Community Care Network of Nichols On June 11th the town of Nichols was sprinkled with walkers of all ages wearing sky blue t-shirts participating in the 3rd annual Hiking for Helping Hands. Each year the event has grown with the amount of walkers as well as the financial support of their numerous sponsors. Fifteen businesses throughout the town were “check points” where the walkers stopped along their scavenger hunt. With each stop, the walkers learned something about each business. The event was initiated as a way for CCNN to “get out there” so people would know who they were and what services they provided. A side bonus was the money collected from the registered walkers, their individual sponsors, as well as the many business sponsors. The first year saw donations totalling over $2,000 which thrilled the

committee members who organized the “hike”. The second year, they doubled that amount. This year, the event brought in over $6,000! Many thanks go out to the multiple businesses and individuals who donated funds, food & beverage, as well as prizes for the participants. Each registered walker went away with a t-shirt listing all the sponsors of the event, a CCNN water jug, and a door prize for participating. There were also category prizes given to those who went above and beyond to raise money for the hike. Honorary prizes also went out to the youngest walker and the most “mature” walker. The annual hike is customarily held in June. Information for the hike will be posted on the website by April leading up to that hike. low relief carving. During the morning students will learn about designing their piece and carve in the afternoon. Wood blank is provided. Dick is a well know local artisan, living in Candor, with a lifetime of experience in custom woodworking design and construction including; furniture, business signs and gazebo in Candor, the reconstruction of an historic barn for the Newark Valley Historical Society and has lead a boat building class for several generations of families in Clayton, NY. This one of ten programs in a Folk Art Series, designed for the general public and those interested in history and traditional crafts. This program is funded in part by NYS Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, administered locally by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes and hosted by the Newark Valley Historical Society and its Guilds.

Some of the questions most frequently asked at the Tioga County Historical Society Museum include: “What can you tell me about my house?”, “What style is it?”, and “How old is it?” Tioga County is home to many unique and historic homes. There are outstanding examples of more than a dozen styles of nineteenth century American architecture scattered throughout the county’s communities. On Saturday, July 16, 2011, the Tioga County Historical Society, in cooperation with the Tioga County Tourism Office, will host several programs telling the story of local architecture. The morning session, running from 10:15am to 12pm, will feature photos of historic homes, past and present, from throughout the county. Discussions will cover the social reasons behind architectural development, including how politics and religion affected home styles. The program will also cover color and landscape.

The afternoon program, occurring from 1:30 to 3:30pm, will be a walking tour of the residential area of downtown Owego, covering the length of Front Street and much of Main Street. Attendees are on their own for lunch, but are encouraged to visit one of Owego’s historic restaurants. Although advance reservations for the programs are not required, they are preferred in order to have sufficient supplies available. Reservations may be made by calling the Tioga County Tourism Office at 1-800-671-7772. Admission is $12 for adults and $10 for seniors aged 62 and over. You may have noticed newly hung purple triangular boxes in area ash trees. These are Emerald Ash Borer monitoring traps. In addition to the purple being an attractant to the Borer, they are covered in a sticky lure. The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a small green beetle whose larvae feed on the living tissue under the bark. They are non-native and therefore do not have any predators to keep their populations in check. Originating from Asia, this invasive insect was first found around Detroit, Michigan in 2001. Since then, EAB has spread to 15 states and two provinces, killing tens of millions of ash trees. None of our native ash trees are safe. As of 2010, New York has 6 known infestations affecting 7 counties, as well as two infestations just across the border in Canada. The purple traps have been hung by APHIS are for monitoring only,

not for control. These traps are hung along commonly used roads, in campgrounds, and around sawmills through a national monitoring program; they are not available to landowners. Right now, we do not know of an EAB infestation in Tioga County or any of our immediate neighboring counties. But, now is the time to make thoughtful decisions about managing woodland, park, yard, and street ash trees. Quick EAB Facts: It attacks only ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) Adult beetles are metallic green and about 1/2-inch long. Adults leave a 1/8” D-shaped exit hole in the bark when they emerge in late spring. Woodpeckers like EAB larvae; heavy woodpecker damage on ash trees may be a sign of infestation.

FFA Tractor Drivers Invited to Pre-Register for 2011 Empire Farm Days Contest Pre-registration for the Thursday, August 11, 2011 FFA Tractor Driving Safety Contest at Empire Farm Days is now open. FFA students will show off their tractor driving skills as part of the Northeast’s largest agricultural trade show . The show runs August 9-11 at the Rodman Lott & Son Farms in Seneca Falls, NY. Contest pre-registration is appreciated and can be emailed to contest cocoordinator Jon Clayson at JClayson@pioneercsd.org. Students may also register by walk-up at 9am for the contest that begins at 9:15am. Students must be in good standing and be wearing their FFA t-shirt. “This competition helps students who are interested in exploring or pursuing career operations in tractor operation develop their safe driving skills. tion teaches students the importance of learning and using safe farm equipment operating skills. Students must complete a written safety exam, a parts identification task, and driving courses: one with a tractor, one with a tractor pulling a 2-wheel wagon and one with a tractor and four-wheel wagon. The top individual earns the right to compete at the Eastern Exposition in Springfield, Mass in September. The 300-acre Empire Farms Days agricultural extravaganza also includes DairyProfit Seminars, live animals, an Equine Center, farm safety and family life displays and activities, 600-plus representatives of agricultural institutions and organizations, GPS-equipped and compact tractor test drives, and chicken, beef and pork BBQ. Sheriff Howard to Seek Re-Election

Tioga County Sheriff Gary W. Howard has officially announced his intention to seek re-election for the Office of Sheriff. Sheriff Howard, age 57, of Owego, began his

career with the Tioga County Sheriffs' Office in 1977, after his honorable discharge from the US Army, were he served as a Military Police Officer. Before being elected as Tioga County Sheriff in 2003, Sheriff Howard worked us a Road Patrol Deputy and Patrol Sergeant. He also served as the supervisor of the Criminal Investigation Division fix twenty years. Sheriff Howard lives in Owego with his wife of 25 years, Deborah, and has two grown children and six grandchildren. He currently serves as a Board Member with the NYS Sheriffs' Institute, and is Vice Chairman of the Tioga Opportunities Board of Directors, and serves on the Leadership Tioga Board of Directors.

Summer Skills Basketball Camp July 25-28 The Newark Valley Summer Skills Basketball Camp for boys and girls going into grades 4-9 starts Monday, July 25 at Newark Valley High School, and runs through Thursday, July 28. The camp includes two sessions: (1) a General Session for all players from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and (2) a Second Session for day-long campers dedicated to the sport from 12-2:30 p.m. A brochure and enrollment form is available at NVBasketball.com. In a fun and energizing atmosphere, the Summer Skills Camp helps players become the skilled competitors they need to be at the next level of the game. Under the direction of high school coaching staff and veteran players, campers learn and drill important offensive and defensive skills neces-

sary for basketball success. In addition to fun and challenging drills, scrimmages and competitions help players apply skills learned each day. The camp emphasizes the importance of having fun in learning the game of basketball, but equally stresses discipline, hard work, and pride. Players get a camp T-shirt, and prizes are awarded daily and at the conclusion of the camp. Pizza lunch is served to campers on Thursday, the last day. The Summer Skills Camp is a product of Newark Valley Basketball Corporation, which supports, promotes, and helps fund the playing of basketball for all levels and genders in our communities.
