Lions Back To School Program The first day of school is a day of new experiences, new friends and new clothes. Unfortunately not all families are able to buy new clothing for that important opening day.

The Apalachin Lions Club, in cooperation with the Endicott KMART has conducted a BACK TO SCHOOL program for the last 22 years. This program furnishes gift certificates to eligible families for help in defraying some of the cost of getting their children

equipped for school.

People living in the Apalachin 13732, Campville 13760, and Little Meadows, PA 18830 zip codes areas can obtain information on eligibility and the application process by calling Nick Rossi at 625-3765 before August 19, 2011. Eligibility for aid will be determined by the Apalachin Lions Club and applicants who qualify will receive a gift certificate prior to the start of the school year.

Fashion Show, Luncheon on Banks of the Susquehanna The Tioga County Chamber of Commerce invites you to attend the 2nd Annual Chamber Fashion Show and Luncheon at 1:00 pm on Sunday, September 11, on the banks of the Susquehanna in the Carriage House at the Pumpelly Estate, 44 Front Street in Owego. NYS Senate Hall of Fame Inductee Joe Ceurter Pays Tribute to Tioga County Korean War Heroes Decorated Korean War Veteran Joe Ceurter of Berkshire, a June 2010 inductee Into New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame, remembers Tioga County's 13 Fallen Heroes of the Korean War. Tioga County's tribute came on the 58th Anniversary of the National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day Wednesday, July 27, at the Korean War Monument at the Tioga County Veterans Memorial in Owego.

Army First Sergeant Ceurter served in both South and North Korea and is the recipient of two Silver Star Medals, two Bronze Stars, and five Purple Hearts.

A moment of silence also recalled the service and sacrifice of 574 deceased Tioga County Korean War Veterans since September 1965 to present.

Among them is Army Lt. Gene Barno of Apalachin buried in Riverside Cemetery-Apalachin. Lt. Barno was wounded twice in October 1953 and received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star.

Wreaths were laid by Mrs. Madeline Barno, widow of Lt. Barno, remembering all Tioga County service personnel and by Ceuter, past VFW Owego Post 1271 Commander, in front of the Korean War Monument.

Honor Guard included members of VFW Post 1371, Tioga County Marine Corp League, and Vietnam Veterans of America. Historic Owego Baptist Church Senior Pastor G. Terry Steenburg gave the invocation and benediction. Master of Ceremonies was Jim Raftis. Live Taps

Three Korean War Army Veterans - Nicholas Kovalchik and Paul Gonzales, both of Endicott, and Sam Osborne of Windsor - recalled their experiences in Korea on Monday, July 27, 1953, the day the armistice ended the three year war and established the demilitarized zone running across the Korean Peninsula.

She recently graduated from Ithaca College with a major in English and a minor in Integrative Health Studies. MAINTENANCE OF EQUIPMENT All of Campville’s apparatus was inspected and serviced and hose testing was done by a reputable company. We are aware that when someone calls 911 “it is the worse day of their life,” and a quick safe response is of the utmost importance.

We have had our share of hot/dry weather this summer, stay hydrated, and use extra precautions to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Also be aware of the very dry conditions out doors.

TRAINING Congratulations to Jacob Sells on his completion of Firefighter 1 Bootcamp.

It was two very hot weather weeks for the camp but all the students persevered.

Squad training this month included our “water rescue” at Gary and Ruth Phelps’ pond. On another evening, firefighters could be seen across the street from the firehouse in the church parking lot setting up water reserve, shuttling water and practicing on nozzle return.

The “young” members were brought to the Vestal training center for live burn scenarios the previous week. We are always busy training on our drill nights keeping everyone up-to-date.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION The Campville ladder truck participated in the July 4th parade in Candor.

2nd Annual Paws For Pets This year, Ashlee Darrow, 11, of Apalachin, again will be collecting pet food and supplies, cleaning supplies, paper towels, bleach, kitty litter, etc. as well as donations for Stray Haven in Waverly, as her way of helping some of the less fortunate pets of Tioga County.

Ashlee would like to beat last year’s

record when she delivered a pick up truck full of supplies and $500 in donations. She will be doing this through the month of August. You can either drop off donations at the Terrace in Apalachin, or at 396 Main St. in Apalachin, or call (607)725-3206 to arrange a pick up.

Owego Kiwanis News The summer has started off busy for the Owego Kiwanis. May and June brought scholarship opportunities to students at Candor High School and Owego Free Academy. Candor graduating seniors awarded scholarships were Amanda Kellogg, who received the Kenneth Ward English Award, and Samantha Ahern, who received the Keyclub Leadership Scholarship Award. OFA graduating senior Keegan Evan received the Allan Bishop Scholarship Award. Kiwanis would like to congratulate these outstanding students as well as all area graduating seniors and wish them the best in all future endeavors.

June also brought the Strawberry Festival where Kiwanis sold bottles of water for $1 and those that purchased a water bottle received a chance to win a

$200 gift card to Price Chopper, which Price Chopper graciously donated.

Congratulations to our winner Rachel Adams and many thanks to our Owego Price Chopper! Several donations have also been this summer to various area agencies: Hidy Ochiai Foundation for Japan Disaster Relief, Family Reading Partners in memory of Bill Davis (a long time Kiwana member who will be greatly missed), and Waterman Conservation Center. Kiwanis wishes our community a wonderful rest of summer and looks forward to continuing to support our community and most importantly our youth.

After placing 3rd at the Chenango Valley tournament there were high expectations for the young men to do well in the Susquehanna Valley tournament as well. During the 1st rounds of the tournament the Apalachin All-Stars kept the momentum going and went through the 3 other teams playing some of the best baseball these young men have played.

Seeded 1st in the tournament for the semi-finals they were lined up against a Binghamton East team who wanted to avenge their previous 11-0 loss against the Apalachin All-Stars. Binghamton jumped out to an early 5-0 lead over Apalachin. Apalachin scored 2 runs shortly after that making it a 5-2 ball game going into the bottom of the last inning. Nate Gibson led off with a blistering grounder in the hole and beat it out; a single by Trevor Hoppler kept the pressure on East. Next Logan Smith had an extra base knock to pull Apalachin to within 1. Chad Wright followed that with another extra base hit scoring Logan to tie up the game at 5-5, then East would intentionality walk Chris Riley to set the stage for Hunter Russell. With a 1-1 count Hunter drilled a ball between

short and third for Game Winning Walk Off Hit too cap off a 4 run rally to advance Apalachin to the Championship Game with a 6-5 victory. On Saturday August 23, at 8pm, the stage was set for the Apalachin All-Stars to play under the lights against a strong Conklin AllStar team on Conklin’s home turf.

Apalachin was up to the task and showed great poise under the pressure of a championship game. All the boys would contribute to the offense and pony-up on the defense. Logan Smith battled a tenacious Conklin Line up ready to defend their home field. Logan pitched a great two innings of shutout baseball and Apalachin settle in for 10-0 lead. Conklin would battle for 7 runs over the next 2 innings to make a game of it. In the fourth inning Chris Riley would come in relief of Smith and recorded 6 straight strikeouts to put down the Conklin rally. Colton Van Driesen would record the final out with a pick off of the only base runner Chris allowed. The boys secured an undefeated Tournament record to win the tournament and become the 2011 champions.

Great job by every player on the team.

Ti-Ahwaga Community Players Award Scholarship The Ti-Ahwaga Community Player's board president, Shawn Yetter, awarded to Carli Liguori the Player's annual $100 scholarship to a graduating high school senior. The award was presented at the annual picnic on July 31 at the Campville Commons in Campville.

Carli, 17, recently graduated from Seton Catholic Central High School, where she ranked fifth in her class with an average of 99.21. She will attend Penn State University in the fall majoring in Nutritional Sciences.

Carli has been involved in theater for the past nine years, and her debut at Ti-Ahwaga was playing multiple roles in "The Dining Room" when she was just 13 years old. She also played in "Mid-Summer Night's Dream", "Evita" and "City of Angels".

In addition to the Ti-Ahwaga Community Players, Carli has performed at the Endicott Performing Arts Center, SRO Productions, Jan DeAngelo Productions and the Binghamton University Summer Theater Program. Some of her favorite roles have been Maria in "West Side Story", Natalie in "All Shook Up", Bell in "Beauty and the Beast" and Reno Sweeney in "Anything Goes".

Not only can Carli act and sing, but she can dance as well. She has been dancing since the age of 3 and has been on the competition dance team with the Dance Shoppe in Ves-

tal since she was 8 years old. She was recently awarded the NYS Grand Champion award for a duet she performed at the Clemens Center in Elmira. In fact, her interest in nutrition stems from her love of dance. Dancers must stay in shape.

Carli's involvement with the TiAhwaga theater over the years and her willingness to help out with set construction and painting in the plays she has performed in made her an easy choice for the award by the Ti-Ahwaga Community Players board of directors, who wish her the best of luck in college and beyond and who hope to see her on their stage again.

Her teachers and staff at RSD have had the pleasure of watching her develop into a studious young woman who enjoys journal writing. Rebecca works hard and excels in her academic endeavors. When goals are set, she strives to achieve them.

Graduating from RSD as Salutatorian of the Class of 2011, Rebecca plans to attend Broome Community College and major in Computer Security and Forensics.

The Ti-Ahwaga Community Player's annual Nicky Award winners are chosen each July through ballot by its membership. Each member can vote for their favorites from that year's plays. The Nickies are then awarded at the companys' annual picnic, which was held at the Campville Commons in Campville, on July 23.

The Central New York Firemen’s Association (CNYFA) Hose Race Overall Points winner came down to the final race at last Sunday’s 188th annual firefighter convention held in Hamilton, NY. Nine teams from Central New York fire departments including two Owego teams competed for prize monies, trophies, and bragging rights at the firematic events.

Defending Central New York Champions Owego Susquehanna Hose Company #1 was tied with former champions Owego Croton Hose Company #3 heading into the third and final race of the day. Both teams had recorded 1st and 2nd place finishes respectively in the ladder, and wye races for a total of 9 points each. Racing second in the team order the Company #1 team executed a near perfect straight lay race with a time of 19.65 seconds putting the pressure on

Company #3 who raced 4th in the team order. With the championship on the line Company #3 came up short finishing the race in 6th place. Company #1 retained the championship (14 points) with Company #3 (9 points) placing second overall.

Owego Fire Chief Ed Franz who hose raced in the 1950s and 1960s congratulated the teams. “The Owego Hose Teams have a long tradition of winning championships dating back to the 1950s. The department takes great pride in our teams,” said Franz, who also noted the races showcase the department across the state. Company #3 team members were Matt Porcari, Mike MacNaughton, Tom Donovan III, Joe Ward, and Nick Jerzak. The races move north to New York Mills next July where the Owego teams are expected to compete again.

Things Are Looking Up at Zion Lutheran Church & School The congregation at Zion Lutheran Church & School of Owego is pleased to proclaim three new and exciting announcements for the church and school: a new pastor, a new teacher and a new grade.

After a five-year pastoral vacancy, the members and community will be welcoming a new Pastor, Rev. Aaron Schian and his wife, Ruth. Rev. Schian graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, IN, on May 20, 2011, and has accepted his call to serve the congregation of Zion. Originally from Frankenmuth, MI, he graduated summa cum laude from Concordia University, River Forest, IL, with a degree in Theological Languages before entering the seminary. He also studied for half a year at the Westfield House in Cambridge, England. During his third year at seminary, his vicarage assignment led him to New York to serve at three congregations, Zion-Owego, Holy Trinity-Chenango Bridge, and Redeemer-Canastota. The community is invited to witness the installation of Rev. Schian at Zion Lutheran Church on Sunday, August 7, during a 4:00 p.m. service.

Zion members have recently voted to extend their Christian school to include 6th grade this fall. The sixth grade will be taught by Ruth Schian, the pastor’s

wife, who has a B.A. degree in Elementary Education with a Concentration in Religion from Concordia University, River Forest, IL. While at Concordia, Ruth earned a GPA of 4.0, and also studied abroad at Cambridge University, UK. She is a proficient piano and organ player, and her past work experience includes student teaching in Grades K-5 in Chicago’s public and parochial schools, Preschool at Trinity Lutheran in Ithaca, NY, and Grades 2-3 and Language Arts for Grades 2-8 at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Bremen, IN. Sixth grade will be offered at Zion Lutheran School this fall, along with their regular Preschool-5th grade program. The school uses the multi-grade system in Grades K-5, but the 6th grade will be taught as a single grade and give students the additional advantage for individual attention, along with all the many benefits the school provides for their students and families. Tree Planting Program in Nichols The Mayor and Board of Trustees are pleased to announce the successful completion of round one of the Village of Nichols Tree Planting Program.

At one time beautiful oak trees lined Main and River Streets. Sadly, as time marches on, Nichols has lost almost all of those trees. The Village Board is now taking steps to change that.

The Mayor and Trustees raised funds by way of residents and business donations to plant thirteen trees along Main and River Streets. “This is just a start,” stated Trustee Lesley Pelotte. “We plan to add more trees all the way down Main Street and hopefully more along River Street as well.”

Mayor Esther Woods commented, “It feels really great to be able to be proactive instead of reactive for a change.

For the past several years we have been forced to react to situations in our Village such as the well project, new FEMA maps and increased water rates.”

She went on to say, “It feels good to be able to make some positive changes to our community.”

The Board elected to plant Lilac Trees. These trees were selected for several reasons. “A long time Nichols resident once made a comment to me that one of the things he missed most about the Village was the trees. Although we would have loved to put oak trees back in, like there used to be, that was just not possible,” stated Trustee Pelotte. “We have to keep the power and water lines in mind, which limits what we can plant.” The Lilac Trees are great “utility trees” because they do not get too tall and they stay relatively compact. They are also slow growers so more easily manageable for a municipality. “In the late summer they produce fragrant white flowers like the Lilac shrubs most of us are familiar with,” stated Pelotte.

In a collaborative effort, the Community Care Network of Nichols (CCNN) is jumping on board with the Main Street revitalization efforts. CCNN has applied for a Healthy Living Grant which will provide for several benches to be placed along Main Street. The grant request includes a plan to establish a Village Walking Trail that will incorporate benches and signage for distances walked at each location.

CCNN Executive Director Dot Richter stated, “Once we learned of the Village’s intent to beautify the downtown area, we thought it would be a great opportunity to also encourage health living activities. It seemed like a wonderful fit and we are happy to be able to contribute toward the effort.”

Apalachin Lions Install New Officers

Tioga County Stock Holders As taxpayers we are literally stockholders in the Tioga County government business.

Do you know who the County legislator is for your district?

Do you know the general goals he or she has for the county?

Most of the current legislators have served for some time and have voted as a block. We need to learn the reasons for such unanimous policy decisions. Were there ever other possibilities? Why is there never a public printed report on actions?

We voters are responsible for choosing the candidate who will represent our visions for the county. At least we need to CALL 687-8261 THE BOARD OF ELECTIONS to find out just who is your current county district legislator. Finding out their policies is another matter in the closed government environment.

Cap off the evening at the Trout Ponds listening to Sleepyhead from 7:30-9:30 which leads right up to an exciting Fireworks Display after dark.
