Owego’s Croton Hose #3 Reclaims Central N.Y. Firematic Title Good Luck to all the Golfers at the Dick’s Open

Owego Croton Hose #3 Team. (Left to Right): Scott McGregor, Mike MacNaughton with daughter Emily, Jim Morris, Pat Gavin, Hank Thomas, Tim Gavin. Not since 1994 has Owego’s Croton Hose #3 held the Central New York Firemen’s Association (CNYFA) Hose Race Overall Points title. Affectionately known as the “Flat Rats,” the Company #3 team has watched fellow department companies #1 and #5 bring home several championships in recent years. At the 119th annual CNYFA convention in N.Y. Mills the once dominant Company #3 team from the 1980s and early 1990s regained its old form sweeping to first places in all three races for the title. “All the other teams were saying look out, Owego #3 is on today,” said Jimmy Morris, 2nd Assistant Fire Chief and Company #3 Member. “Everything came together for us.” The Company #3 team recorded first place finishes in the ladder, wye, and straight lay races for a total of 15 points beating seven other teams. The races are timed events where firefighters test their skills. Teams of five members must connect nozzles to

hoses, hoses to hoses, and hoses to the fire hydrant, and knock down targets in the quickest time in the ladder, wye, and straight lay competitions. Hose races improve basic firefighting skills. Area fire departments from 20 counties that comprise the association were invited to the races. Teams from Chenango Bridge, Clayville, McGraw, Oriskany Falls, Owego and Whitesboro competed. Company #3 team members included Jimmy Morris, Mike MacNaughton, Hank Thomas, Scott McGregor, Tim Gavin, and Pat Gavin. The win is especially rewarding for the Company #3 team as Owego continues to recover from the September 2011 flood. The company’s station is located on the “Flats,” located in the northwest end of the Village of Owego that was hit hard by the flood waters. Nearly every home in the area sustained significant flood damage. The team also team practices on Delphine Street on the Flats.

Ti-Ahwaga Community Players 2012 Nicky Award winners Alan Benninger (Best Play), Stacey Jo Oropello (Best Actress), Jane Nichols (Best Supporting Actress) Laura Johnson (Best Director), and Greg Fusare (Best Supporting Actor & Best Vignette). Not present, Francisco Paler-Large (Best Actor). The Ti-Ahwaga Community Player's Nicky Awards were recently announced at the theater group's annual picnic, which was held on July 29 at the Round top Park in Endicott. The winners are chosen each July through ballot by its membership. In the past each member voted for their favorite actors and director from that year's plays. This year they added two categories, "Best Play" and "Best Vignette" to spice things up a bit. This year's plays were "A Christmas Story," "Wait Until Dark," "Rumors," and "Pippin." Normally there are five plays to consider, but this year there were only four because of last year's flood. Jane Nichols took "Best Supporting Actress" with her rib-tickling performance as Claire Ganz in "Rumors," and Greg Fusare took "Best Supporting Actor" with his equally funny performance as Lenny Ganz in "Rumors." Greg Fusare also took the "Best Vignette" category with his amazing monolog "Charlie Brock's Explanation" at the end of Act II in "Rumors."

Stacy Jo Oropello took "Best Actress" with her riveting performance as Susy Hendrix in "Wait Until Dark," and Francisco Paler-Large took "Best Actor" with his breathtaking performance as Leading Player in "Pippin." Laura Johnson took "Best Director" for her superb direction of "Rumors," which also took the "Best Play" category, and both Laura Johnson and producer Alan Benninger accepted that award. It was truly a hilarious play well deserving of the award. The Ti-Ahwaga Performing Arts Center is a beautiful cabaret-style theater at 42 Delphine Street in Owego, where fine wines, beers, soft drinks and snacks are available to enjoy at your table during the show, and there isn't a bad seat in the house. The Ti-Ahwaga Community Players perform five plays each year from October through June. For more information, go to www.tiahwaga.com or call 6872130.

“We’ve Been Fracked”: True Stories from Pennsylvania Citizen journalist Vera Scroggins and entrepreneur Craig Stevens to present in Owego on August 8, at 7:00 pm, at the Owego Free Academy auditorium, 1 Sheldon Guile Boulevard in Owego. Vera Scroggins, a citizen journalist who produces videos for YouTube, Shaleshock Media, and public access cable TV, and Craig Stevens, an entrepreneur, four-time national awardwinning NRA master trainer, and advocate for clean water access as a right, both live in “gasland”—Susquehanna County, PA. On Wednesday, August 8, Tioga County residents will have the chance to hear both share their personal experiences living with and observing the effects of fracking on their own families, their neighbors, and their communities. “I come to speak to New Yorkers so that you won’t go down the same ruin-

ous road as Pennsylvania,” said Stevens. Scroggins’s motivation is similar. “They’re destroying Pennsylvania,” she said. “But it’s not too late for you New Yorkers. You’ve got to stop fracking before it comes, or it will wreck your state, too.” This is a great opportunity for those who say they don’t know enough about fracking to decide whether to sign ban or moratorium petitions in Tioga County towns. “These presenters know because they live with fracking daily,” said Janet Thomas. “We’re fortunate they’re willing to share their firsthand experiences with us.” The events, cosponsored by RAFT, Owego RAFT, the Committee to Preserve the Finger Lakes, and the Coalition to Protect New York, are free and open to the public.

Ti-Ahwaga Community Players Award Scholarships The Ti-Ahwaga Community Players recently awarded the organization’s annual $100 scholarship for graduating high school seniors to two deserving students, Samuel Ellis and Michael Kane. Both students have been active as actors and volunteer set builders for TiAhwaga productions. Samuel Ellis, 18, graduated from Athens Area High School this year. He will be attending New York University in the fall and majoring in acting. In high school, he was President of Interact Club, Youth Advisory Committee, and Drama Club, a member of National Honors Society, a regular top-10 competitor at the state conference for Future Business Leaders of America, a soloist in Elite Show Choir, Captain of the Scholarship Challenge Team, and Editor-in-chief of the Athens High School Newspaper. He performed in 'Little Shop of Horrors' and 'Pippin' at the Ti-Ahwaga Performing Acts Center and in 23 other productions at the Waverly Storefront Theater, Black Box Theatre, Hangar Theatre, and with the Athens High School Drama Club.

Join us Saturday August 18th 8:30 to 11:30

Michael Kane, 18, graduated from Owego Free Academy this year. He will be attending Finger Lakes Community College in the fall and majoring in Music Recording Technology. In addition to the TiAhwaga scholarship, he received the Owego Free Academy Music Boosters Scholarship, Elizabeth Eddy Ives Accomplished Musician Scholarship, Owego Free Academy Outstanding Singer Award, and the Tioga County Music Educators Association Award. He performed in 'A Christmas Story' and 'Little Shop of Horrors' at the TiAhwaga Performing Arts Center and was an assistant counselor for the 2008 Children’s Summer Theater Workshop. He has also performed in many musicals with the Owego Free Academy and Owego Apalachin Middle School Music Departments and has been in productions at the Narrows Community Theater, NICU's Spoon Theater, and the Endicott Performing Arts Center. Samuel and Michael's involvement with the Ti-Ahwaga Performing Arts Center and their willingness to help out with set construction in the plays they performed in made them easy choices for the awards by the Ti-Ahwaga Community Players' board of directors, who wish them the best of luck in college and beyond and who hope to see them on their stage again.

The Town of Candor is still looking for any pictures of the dam prior to the Tropical Storm Lee flood of September 2011. FEMA is trying to determine the pre disaster condition of the seepage with the current seepage. The dam was repaired in 1997, so any pictures with low water levels after that date would be a great help. As a way of giving back to those who have so heroically served and protected us, all proceeds from the ticket sales for the August 10 Oak Ridge Boys concert at Tioga Downs will be donated to the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group. In addition, Chairman of American Racing and Entertainment Jeff Gural has decided he will now personally donate $10 to the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group for every ticket sold for the concert. So, for every ticket sold, $20 will be donated. Tioga Downs will be continuing their successful annual Summer Concert Series with a concert by the chart-topping group Oak Ridge Boys! Renowned for such great hits as “Elvira”, “American Made” and “Bobbie Sue”, Oak Ridge Boys will take to the stage on Friday, August 10 outside and under the stars at Tioga Downs. Tickets for the 8:00 pm show are available for $10 at the Tioga Downs Casino Gift Shop and all Ticketmaster locations. “Once again, I look forward to our annual concert where all the

ticket sales go to help our veterans here in the twin tiers. Oak Ridge Boys is one of my favorite groups, and in appreciation for all that the veterans in the country have done to keep us safe, I will personally donate $10 for every ticket sold,” Mr. Gural stated. Last year’s Wynonna concert at Tioga Downs raised $40,870 through ticket sales, with Mr. Gural’s $5 match adding another $20,435 to the final amount that was then donated to the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group. Tioga Downs would like to say a further “thank you” to our Vets by holding a Veteran’s Appreciation Day on August 11, featuring a special $6 buffet from 4:00 to 10:00 pm (Veteran’s must have a Military ID and Player’s Club Card). Tioga Downs Casino is open year -round with video gaming machines, simulcast horse racing, restaurants, a sports bar and special entertainment events. It is located along the north side of NY Route 17/ I-86, two miles west of exit 62 in Nichols.

17th Annual Owego Baseball Tournament Champions Owego Little League (OLL) concluded two very successful tournaments in July. Here are the results from Tournament Co-Directors Mike and Elena Beyer: 12B: First Vestal Green; Second West Corners; Third Waverly. 12C: First Northeast Bradford; Second Maine Endwell Gold; Third Vestal Grey. 10U A: First Endicott; Second Vestal. 10U B: Nichols; Second Vestal Grey. 10U C: Owego. Second Endicott. Elsewhere Undefeated Owego 12B won the West Corners Tournament. Owego Minors Softball All Stars won the 2012 Owego Invitational Championship. Owego 12B, 12C and 10C competed in the Maine Endwell Tournament. Thanks Steve Lawrence Sports Columnist Steve Lawrence reflects on OLL's 61st season in the Ithaca Times: "Owego took a devastating hit last September. Their Little League complex was under five feet of water. When the water subsided, the fences were bent over, torn apart and full of leaves and dirt and debris. Tons of topsoil was washed away, the tractor was under water, as it looked as though the League

61st Opening Day would not happen. "Mother Nature took a big swing, but Kenny Winters, who has been around the fields as a player, coach and league official for 55 years, wasn't about to forfeit the game. "Ken and a host of volunteers came up with the $42,000 necessary for the rebuilding, put in hundreds of hours, and once again, the complex is among New York's finest. I played Little League ball with Kenny, and I'm proud to call him a friend. That community is very lucky to have him." Thanks, Steve. OLL thanks all for their extraordinary support to make the 61st regular and tournament seasons a success. A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held on July 27, 2012, at radio station WEBO's new home at 60 North Street in downtown Owego. The event celebrated the 55 Years of broadcasting and community service for News Radio WEBO 1330 AM and 107.9 FM.

From Senator Tom Libous Serving Broome, Tioga and Chenango Counties

55 Years of Hometown Radio News Radio WEBO celebrated over 55 years in broadcasting with local leaders at their new station location in downtown Owego. In the last 5 years, WEBO has survived two major floods, broadcasting vital news and information to victims throughout Tioga County and Northern Pennsylvania. Owner and Station Manager Dave Radigan thanked his staff and his Station Manager and Owner Dave listeners for making WEBO Tioga Radigan (right) receives an official County's hometown station. Senate Proclamation from Senator Libous.

Letter to the Editor July 24, 2012 On July 12th, at the BOE meeting for the OACSD, I made a request for the Board to consider appointing a member of the public (taxpayer) to the committee responsible for negotiating the next salary increase for our teachers. I also recommended they consider, Mr. Haig McNamee, who has made a career of negotiating contracts for multi-national corporations, as that appointee. After six days of hearing nothing regarding my request, I emailed the request to Mr. David Barton, President of the BOE. David’s response (to follow) seems both arrogant and self serving and is hardly the response one would expect from a member of a Board which claims to be watching out for the taxpayers and the children they are charged to educate. David wrote: Mr. Chartrand, The district has put in place an experienced negotiation team for the last several contract negotiation cycles and has every confidence that this same team will be more than capable of achieving the goals that the Board of Ed will set forth. Regarding your comment that Mr. McNamee would serve as a representative of the tax paying public, I will note to you that the tax paying public has duly elected the seven members of the Board, and further-

more, soundly indicated in May's election that Mr. McNamee's services are not desired at this time. In consideration of the above, the Board of Ed rejects your request. Thank you, David Barton It will be interesting and refreshing to see what “goals the Board of Ed will set forth” and once achieved, what increase will be approved. Will these goals help control costs during these difficult economic times? Will these goals afford teachers the same increases in salary and benefits that the taxpaying public is experiencing, or will these goals continue to show increases this agra-rural community cannot afford? I once assumed it was pressure from the Bargaining Units which resulted in the very favorable pay and benefit increases the Bargaining Units received. Now I am told by Mr. Barton that the goals for the negotiations are set by the Board! Without taxpayer representation on the committee we can only wait and see what the BOE delivers. And yes, we can vote again, next May. Will out cost of $19,000 per student increase or decrease under the leadership of Mr. Barton? Tioga Museum Opens First Responders Exhibit The Tioga County Historical Society Museum, located at 110 Front Street in Owego, has opened a special exhibit showcasing the history of Tioga County first responders. The exhibition features a century-old dress parade uniform from Newark Valley, an antique hose cart from Waverly, and a call box from Apalachin. Many photographs, memorabilia, and documents are also on display, as are several gleaming examples of firemen’s trumpets. Another highlight of the exhibit is a set of four lithographed prints, titled ‘The Life of a Fireman,” produced in 1854 by the famous duo Nathaniel Currier and James Ives. The prints are on loan to the museum from Hiawatha Company #4 of the Owego Fire Department. The exhibit honors all Tioga County first responders, but also marks the 150 th

anniversary of the official incorporation of the Owego Fire Department, and the 100th anniversary of the dedication of Owego’s Central Fire Station on North Ave. As part of the celebration, the museum is offering a commemorative local firefighting history booklet. TCHS wishes to thank the Owego, Apalachin, and the Newark Valley Fire Departments and the Newark Valley Historian’s Office for their gracious loans and participation in the exhibit. The exhibit will remain open at the museum until mid October. The Tioga County Historical Society Museum is open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
